- So a lot of people were asking about Amiibo after my Fate of Toys to Life video and, well...
I swear to God I was working on this video before Isabelle was announced.

'but we're not gonna talk about how bad amiibo crossing was'
*spends 5 minutes of a 9 minute video talking about how bad it was*
as a longtime series fan, this was cathartic.
IT BAD
It was 6 minutes
A man of culture I see
True, it could have been made a separate video
"The one character everybody universally HATES"
*Shows Tom Nook instead of Mr. Resetti*
What?
I think because resetti has no amiibo for the game
Yes he does?
Resetti has always been my favorite.
Resetti actually has an Amiibo
You know what? I’m going out right now and buying a Tom Nook amiibo.
I think if amiibo are successful they are so as purely a collectible and not a toy. The ones I own I own purely for the character they are and not the game. Hell I own some for games I don’t own simply cause of how much I love the amiibo or character
True, while me and my friends personally love amiibo festival for playing with the stalk market, I own every single animal crossing amiibo because I simply love animal crossing
I have the Chrom amiibo and I don't have Fire Emblem: Warriors
I bought the Splatoon Amiibo's simply just because they looked nice
I agree, they're supposed to be neat collectibles that have nice features. they succeeded in that aspect, and still sell really well today. heck, i had to preorder my pearl/marina set because i knew so well they were going to be gone day of release.
@@megumicarrot5171 Don't you mean...fresh? :D
>Was decent from first launch
>People realized some figures had limited release
>Scalping arised
>Overstocked during ACAF
>Declined because they have no value and overstuffed shelves for newer waves
>Scalping declined
>BoTW happend
>All Zelda/old amiibo suddenly became rarer
>Nintendo decide to limit stocking again
>Scalping arised
so what you're saying is capitalism ruined amiibo
This is so true it's sad
@@MinePro101 as Winston churchill said "capitalism is the worst system apart from all the other ones"
@@npclucario7005 as winston churchill said, "i'm a shitty genocidal old bitch shithead"
My local Gamestop only has like two amiibos
"only amiibo required game"
*clears throat* amiibo tap
Also Mini Mario & Friends: Amiibo Challenge. Although with both of these you could argue that any amiibo works, whereas Amiibo Festival requires specifically AC amiibos.
to be fair, both games are free so it’s kind of just a bonus for amiibo owners
Amiibo Tap isn't a game. It is and was a glorified commercial for the Virtual Console.
Atsuko Kagari yeah. It was MULTIPLE games, you silly gooses!
And mini Mario and friends amiibos challenge
It’s interesting to see amiibo rise as a toys to life giant, fall due to an over saturation of Animal Crossing, now slowly rising again by focusing more on being a cool collectible figure that gives you small bonuses
Amibo will be back come Smash Ultimate, mark my words...
If the rumors are true, new figures will be utilized to unlock characters.
Boy do I have good news for you guys
Regal99 haha lol they’re not.
Regal99 yep
You called it
3:28 WHOA WHOA WHOA HOLD ON A SEC ARE YOU TRYING TO TELL ME THIS GAME IS TEACHING KIDS THAT YOUR HAPPINESS DEPENDS ON HOW MUCH MONEY YOU HAVE?!
I mean, When you put it that way...
@r_.1_.v._e_r true
Amiibo is not dying. They're making new ones for Smash Ultimate. They are cancelled completely if they are dying
Dying indicates a decline. Amibo can still still be made even if their overall success is on a decline. Complete cancelation is not dying, complete cancelation is death. Dying and death are two every different things.
But they did as far as far as "Toys To Life" goes. They are purely collectables. Plus when stores cannot get rid of old stock they order less and less of new stock until the old stuff gets sold.
Obi-Wan Kenobi the words of a true Jedi Knight.
You can still buy skylanders
Ok Cappy4Smash, if something is dying, it doesn’t mean it is cancled
I feel like with the new smash that Amiibo will pick up traction again. Amiibo have been down but not out, and I’m glad they’re still being made
Its because your not forced to use Amiibo really
How does one bad game mean amiibo failed overall? That makes no sense.
William Duffy Nintendo oversaturated the amiibo market based on that one bad game.
@@epm1012 yeah. Just one game. Aside from that Amiibo are still being produced and sold.
Yeah amiibos still live on and even if they don't have that big Sky landers like game they are still the winner and survivor of toys to life

I can't find Amiibo anymore aside from the Mario Wedding ones....
Tarponpet Secord I can only find Pikachu and like two more I don’t want...
You have to pre order them. They literally don't make it to the shelf.
I only find Lucas, little mac, animal crossing and streetfighter amiibos in my local stores. I got most of my figures by finding them used or ordering them.
Tarponpet Secord Same here. Almost every store I’ve been to doesn’t have them anymore and if they’re some it’s always the Mario Odyssey wedding Amiibo
All I see is animal crossing.
There's only one thing you got horribly wrong in this video Kohdok: You called the animal crossing characters "forgettable." How DARE you. I absolutely love the AC characters but yeah i loved that they went on clearence cause now I could get a full set of AC figures for nothing lol
Nintendo: 'So it's time to make the AC Amiibos. Should we make one of Ankha, the most popular non-essential character in the game? Nah, let's make one of the museum guy!"
Kohdok the difference is that one, you randomly get and most of the time isn’t there with a stock personality and the other is a stable character that appears across the games with a set personality unique to him and him alone
Kohdok you mean Blathers the owl, that essential character in everyone’s town? Yeah, I have no idea who you’re talking about.
Kohdok also, bad timing with the launch of this video. Give it a few months. Smash Ultimate is around the corner.
Blathers has been around since the original, man! Of course they'd make a figure of him. He's great.
The only character you can really use that argument for is Lottie, who was brand new in a not so popular game.
I love amiibo but I understand why it died and amiibo festival really hurt fans trust in Nintendo
Same any store I vist just have animal crossing but I did find a mega man amiibo
Amiibo didn't die though.
Scaredy C I don’t think Amiibo Festival “hurt fans trust in Nintendo”. It was just a boring game.
Also, just you wait. Smash Bros. Ultimate is on the horizon.
I think amiibos are not dead they just lost a few fans but the numbers of fans are still relly high
I play mario party to lose, I specifically avoid all the stars and good paths, but the number of times I’ve won because of the last minute dial that switches all of the stars between 2 players is higher than the number of times I haven’t, I’ve gone from last to first in a second and the player in first shot to last. You cannot say that the winner of Mario Party comes down to who was the best at mini games, it is just chance
besides MP9 and 10, which were great entries
1 year later: THERE STILL MAKING AMIIBO
The thing I learnt from Animal Crossing: Amibo Festival:
"I guess you can buy happiness with money."
I'd still call it a win because at least amiibo still exist and are still selling. Right now, you may not see many or any at Target or Walmart, but I am sure that will change when Smash Ultimate and all of the amiibo for that game come out.
Nintendo really needed some sort of Skylanders/Disney Infinity/Dimensions game that required amiibo where you could group up a bunch of figures for some kind of story or game. The only problem is that Smash exists and it already takes up that crossover title.
which sucks as they could do alot of figures for that game
@@housinengi9512 I know right? Most of these figures are only used once sparingly and never used again. This would make the use of amiibo feel worth while this time.
And the amiibos for Smash just gave you a training partner. Maybe if there was an amiibo game where you tap an amiibo to play as a character for an RPG adventure, I bet that game would revive the toys to life genre.
@@SeanWheeler100 Maybe if they do a Subspace emissary like story that goes with Smash ultimate but gives you bonuses through amiibo? Or you can save your character on it and take it to a friend's game for co-op?
EagleZtoTheGrave Not bonuses through amiibo. You have to tap the amiibo to take control of the character like how in Disney Infinity you have to place a Disney figure on the Disney Infinity base to play as the character. A true competitor to Disney Infinity/Skylanders/LEGO Dimensions should have you play as that figure, not give you bonuses, costumes, etc. I want a Disney Infinity styled Amiibo game! If they could make a game like that, people would have a lot more incentive to buy amiibos for that game.
The reason why amiibos are still relevant and thriving is that they're easy to grab online which is where most people are at (including millennials) doing their weekly shopping instead of at stores. Also because of the amiibo sections growing smaller and smaller not to mention the Animal Crossing, online you are able to grab whatever amiibo you please. They are usually around $15 to $30 depending on Rarity
*ahem* Skyward Sword Link amiibo. Still stuck as an Amazon exclusive that has been sold out for the longest time and still fetches a high price on the secondhand market.
I don't think you understand enough about Amiibo Festival or Amiibo in general. A little embarrassing to be honest, especially with so many assumptions.
Yeah... literally growing money on trees is, in fact, something that you can do in the full Animal Crossing games
Thank you for covering this!
I think another very important thing to note is that even at their absolute best Amiibos don't really do anyting beyond unlocking content. Even in Amiibo Festival they're just glorified controllers; the game comes with an Amiibo and since you can use guest tokens you're basically buying a game exclusive peripheral that you need one of and I can't really use with other games. That's not toys to life. In every other game you tap the Amiibo once and then put it back on your shelf or stuff it in a closet. Compare that to Skylanders where in like the first hour of non-tutorial gameplay I was swapping Skylanders constantly and had to keep them on the portal to continue enjoying the game. I bought Skylanders beyond the starter pack when I bought the main game because I knew it would expand my fun. If I pick up an Amiibo with a game the two events have nothing to do with each other.
I believe there were other factors in this as well. The rarity of Amiibo was a huge driving force in why these sold since everyone went crazy trying to get these things, but not too long before this game was released they were becoming more common. They were also about a year old and the hype was just dying out by this point. The Smash line was definitely the biggest line out there and it was almost done by the time this was released. They likely just wanted to use another big series to get more attention as a replacement but of course that didn't go too well. Good video though.
The re releasing of the smash amiibo will probably be the third wave of amiibo hype. After that I can't tell what will happen after
awesome vid as always
and yet, 1 year later
we still are getting new Smash amiibo and new Shovel Knight amiibo
Wow ur channel has the quality of one with 1 million subs keep it up
I never knew this was happening. I thought they were constantly sold out because every Gamestop I went to in town (3 or 4) never had the figures or cards. They all said that they are never in stock and don't know when they'll get more. I always wanted to collect more but I guess I have to do it online.
Best Amiibo feature: Summoning Wolf Link in Breath of the Wild as a companion with the Wolf Link Amiibo.
Admittedly I want to see amiibo get its own game, I understand the thing of not wanting to end up with another "basically just skylanders" game, but I also admit that I basically want to see exactly that. I was one of the people that was admittedly strung along by skylanders until basically the end, but the idea of going out and fighting against evil using your amiibo sounds AMAZING... Granted the only plot I could really think of for it would basically be world of light.
meanwhile, at alpharads house
But they’re still making them, and with games such as splatoon with rare outfits, botw with exclusive armour and weapons, mario with its moon hunting and coin hunting ones, and even third party games like shovel knight having its fairies, amiibo won’t just slow down! Nintendo isn’t just jumping ship, they’re repairing that ship they blew a hone into with this animal crossing party game. Plus, they’re just nice to look at on a shelf
This is why I only own the bowser and donkey Kong skymiibo hybrids, I originally bought them for the skylander functionality but Hey they work as amiibo so double win
Hmm. First time I've watched any of your videos, but now I'm curious as to your take on the upcoming game with toys-to-life components - Starlink: Battle for Atlas.
They’re still making Amiibos! I can’t wait for that joker amiibo...
I remember I got a Kirby amiibo because my parents couldn't find any others, years later I found out that Kirby became a rare after that.
I can’t find amiibo at any stores anymore they are just flat out not selling them
Just this morning I came up with an idea for a Sonic game involving amiibo:
It would release alongside a Sonic amiibo series, which would be compatible with the game. You would use amiibo and play as that character, and level them up by playing stages. you would also be able to swap out characters during levels, and you would have a special that you could use once your gauge was full. Specials would be different for each character, and by using a Super Sonic/smash bros Sonic amiibo, you would play as Sonic, but you would have a Hyper Sonic special that would be slightly stronger than Sonic's normal special, Super Sonic. I know people say Sonic games haven't been good lately, and I thought this would be a cool idea.
Okay true, they’re not nearly what they once were, but they’re not dying anytime soon.
Amiibos rised, fell, and rised again.
I can't wait to get my octoling amibos for Christmas then my collection of Pearl, Marina and the octos will be complete!
* Smash Ultimate Theme from the Distance getting louder and louder as the Amiibo press the Continue Button instead of Game Over *
I bought/traded all of the animal crossing amiibo cards in hopes of a switch game. So glad I predicted they'd be out of stores & be hard to trade years later! They need a series 6 when the switch game 2019 comes out!
I rarely, if ever, see any Amiibo in stores and those I do see are ones I don't want.
1:47 -- Is that little Markie Zuckerberg?
tbh playing this game is kinda a guilty pleasure cause it’s the only video game my parents like to play and they get really into it (my dad really loves watching stocks lol)
My target doesn’t even sell them anymore... I hope they sell them again when smash comes out because the closest place that carries them is 50 miles away
I didn’t have much of an interest in amiibo until I bought a new 2DS XL. Now I can actually use them, but all of the good ones seem to only be available through eBay. 😕
I got a Nintendo ad before this video....
Amiibo sold well at first because we are familiar with the characters.
Would you like a figure of (insert skylander here), or megaman? Most would chose megaman because you had a chance to grow fond of the character.
At my local BigW and Target, I saw two unopened boxes of Amiibo festival for $25 AUD.
As someone who used to work in a games store, I can say amiibo festival was such a huge flop, our company thought interest in amiibo was dead and stopped stocking them despite the fact it was just the animal crossing ones no one wanted.
For the record actual things which happened:;
We had a BOGOF deal, and even when they where the only options left, and at £5 a pop people would not take a free one.
We had a entire shelf for amiibo festival and it dropped to £2.50 and still no one brought it, and we had to sell it for the amiibo inside not the game itself.
We only sold out because a scalper came, who was tbh v stupid, and brought all the copies, and we normally do a 3 max per customer rule, but we just let him take all 30 copies.
Worst thing is nintendo would not take them back, even if in mint condition, meaning you had to sell them. Im pretty sure theyre a £1 in my old store and they still will never sell.
Rest of the amiibo though? bah hotcakes tbvh, animal crossing is just not destined for amiibo and was better with the cards
what happened was Nintendo was the first to try “let’s make these collectibles not toys” with smash 4 which thrived, then they tried their hand at the actual toys to life concept with amiibo festival. They realized how badly it was received and are going back to the original amiibo concept with BoTW and smash ultimate. Nevertheless, what kept amiibo from declining like the other franchises is that Nintendo as a company realized what the audience wanted and adapted it to their plans making a compromise to both the company and their fans, you can’t call a single game that did badly the decline of a concept that is still ongoing. Thanks for coming to my TEDtalk.
finally, someone here who understands that Amiibo were collectibles and optional
Saw game grumps play this and remembered thinking, when does the gameplay start? I still bought the animal crossing amiibo, for mario maker, and just for the sake of collecting them.
2:58 he predicted the stonks meme
It would be awesome if there was a special toys come to life Nintendo game where every character that got an amiibo was either playable or unlocked content. Like the subspace emissary from brawl maybe
i want a pikachu and wolf link amiibo. but why do they call the wolf link? is link a werewolf?
With the release of SSBU, I’m sure a resurgence in amiibos will happen
I have 9 amiibo’s two of which came from that set because the standard price for an amiibo here is £11 rrp though I have only ever gotten them on promo
Toys R us always had a wall of Amiibo. Nobody stocks amiibo like them.
I hope that the return of Smash Amiibo with Smash Ultimate kind of brings back amiibo.
I wonder if I should grab the Animal Crossing amiibo now since they are so cheap. If they are at 5$ each I could get about 3 for the price of one
I just have some because they look nice
I snagged 3 of them at Five BeLow and the Triple Pack at Best Buy so look there if you wanna hunt the cheap ones down.
With Smash Bros. Ultimate launching, I assume amiibo figures will receive a boost in sales, like they did in 2014. I know I’m gonna buy Snake, Pokemon trainer, Inkling, Simon, etc.
I haven't seen any amiibo at my local Walmart in months.
Couldn't get amiibo in my country and now the only ones that are around are the Animal crossing ones those are still being sold at full price too. was in Germany a month ago saw the splatoon amiibo and passed on them. rather find the amiibo cards much cheaper, portable, and convenient to store.
amiibo was always meant to be an optional choice for playing games. They weren't mandatory for gameplay since Day 1.
So we not going to talk about In Super Smash Bros Ultimate you get to watch two amazing max out level characters fight it out?
Hopefully Smash Ultimate revitalizes the amiibo market. It’s been really frustrating how Nintendo has been mishandling amiibo (especially how rare some of those 30th anniversary Zelda amiibo are)!
i have never seen them in stores
I collect amiibo because they're awesome collectibles. Breath of the Wild used them to farm resources and that was very helpful.
All the stores around me has them, but all the ones no one cares about. I dont even remember when was the last time new stock came in.
New smash makes them toys to life again and I know lots of people who bought amiibos because of it. Sooooo success
AC:AF isn't the only gamě that requires Amiibo, Mini Mario And Friends Amiibo Challenge for the 3ds and Wii U also require them
Where I live the only way to get amiibo is by waiting until EB games finally gets like two amiibo, and their not even good ones too
Amiibo is still going... Amiibo festival may suck, but they are still being made. Sure, they aren’t doing as well as they used to, but they are still being bought by dedicated people! Plus, they were optional. (For most games) Ever seen switch amiibos, yes? Proves my point. Well, not really, but there is still hope for it.
But kohdok what about starlink
You make videos like actual content creators, you def need more subs!
I actually play animal crossing new leaf and I been wanting to get more of the figures and cards but no one in my area is carrying them anymore. It kinda sucks. Guess I know why now that amiibo festival didn't look fun to me so I never bought it.
Smash Ultimate has functionality unknown as of now but it may be the same as it first was. PLUS!!! Isabelle are flying off the shelves now thanks to her being in smash bros ^^
Smash Ultimate may see a resurgence in popularity for a short while (and I can get my damned Corrin Amiibo), seeing some reprints would be nice
They don't have the craze they had still they make great collectibles and they are still making them.
Outside of Amiibo festival, I think an issue with it was inundating the market with so much Animal Crossing media in a short amount of time. I say this as a fan since New Leaf and it is still popular. I just don’t know if it warranted an Amiibo based update 3 years after it’s launch, an Amiibo spinoff on the WiiU, and all of the Amiibo cards and figures. It just felt like they were artificially trying to push the series so hard to me when they could have dispersed that energy more evenly to other franchises.
Know I'm late but amiibo are just figured now tbh and I think everyone is pretty cool with that
I spent hours with amiibo in smash, and it's gonna happen again in December.
Amiibo Festival, money buys happiness.
animal crossing amiibos ended up being kinda rare in my country. it took me over 2 years to collect them all.
okay NO NO the characters that god amiibos ARE NOT FORGETTABLE god DANG like wtf man i love all of the animal crossing characters that god amiibos like this is a good video so far but that point can go away!
its got not god
god is not got
what hurts the most about this game is that it looks gorgeous from an asthetic standpoint
they could have EASILY made a new mainline animal crossing game for the switch.
but, alas....
Amiibo festival was a punch in the gut, in the amiibo and animal crossing timeline.
To be fair, toys to life was basically DRM in physical form
I like them, for me they are like little figurines. And they are of Nintendo characters so that's extra great. I do understand what happened to them but I do hope more come out for certain characters I would love to have them for. Like the upcoming Ridley.
well now we have Smash Bros Ultimate and it seen the amiibo populairity raises again, but only slightly
Have you ever noticed that this guy may be the same dude as Arlo, you know, the Nintendo obsessed puppet
They had Animal crossing amiibo festival at my local EB games and it was less than $5
For me, Nintendo should do a games that contains all the amiibo. They did the bad one for 3ds related to mario band, but they need to create something that contains all the list.
They are re printing all the smash amiibo for smash bros ultimate switch. That over saturation isn't going to help things. Most people that buy these are collectors and if the amiibo are to common they will sell or or stop buying. Not much time after that the end of amiibo will come.
With Smash Bros Ultimate coming out soon, Amiibo could really make a big comeback. They have been getting slightly better since the Switch's launch anyways.
Who is still getting the new smash amiibos?
my local eb games only has 2 spots on a shelf with them XD
