True, while me and my friends personally love amiibo festival for playing with the stalk market, I own every single animal crossing amiibo because I simply love animal crossing
I agree, they're supposed to be neat collectibles that have nice features. they succeeded in that aspect, and still sell really well today. heck, i had to preorder my pearl/marina set because i knew so well they were going to be gone day of release.

It’s interesting to see amiibo rise as a toys to life giant, fall due to an over saturation of Animal Crossing, now slowly rising again by focusing more on being a cool collectible figure that gives you small bonuses
Also Mini Mario & Friends: Amiibo Challenge. Although with both of these you could argue that any amiibo works, whereas Amiibo Festival requires specifically AC amiibos.
Dying indicates a decline. Amibo can still still be made even if their overall success is on a decline. Complete cancelation is not dying, complete cancelation is death. Dying and death are two every different things.
But they did as far as far as "Toys To Life" goes. They are purely collectables. Plus when stores cannot get rid of old stock they order less and less of new stock until the old stuff gets sold.
I only find Lucas, little mac, animal crossing and streetfighter amiibos in my local stores. I got most of my figures by finding them used or ordering them.
There's only one thing you got horribly wrong in this video Kohdok: You called the animal crossing characters "forgettable." How DARE you. I absolutely love the AC characters but yeah i loved that they went on clearence cause now I could get a full set of AC figures for nothing lol
Nintendo: 'So it's time to make the AC Amiibos. Should we make one of Ankha, the most popular non-essential character in the game? Nah, let's make one of the museum guy!"
Kohdok the difference is that one, you randomly get and most of the time isn’t there with a stock personality and the other is a stable character that appears across the games with a set personality unique to him and him alone
Blathers has been around since the original, man! Of course they'd make a figure of him. He's great. The only character you can really use that argument for is Lottie, who was brand new in a not so popular game.
I play mario party to lose, I specifically avoid all the stars and good paths, but the number of times I’ve won because of the last minute dial that switches all of the stars between 2 players is higher than the number of times I haven’t, I’ve gone from last to first in a second and the player in first shot to last. You cannot say that the winner of Mario Party comes down to who was the best at mini games, it is just chance
I'd still call it a win because at least amiibo still exist and are still selling. Right now, you may not see many or any at Target or Walmart, but I am sure that will change when Smash Ultimate and all of the amiibo for that game come out.
Nintendo really needed some sort of Skylanders/Disney Infinity/Dimensions game that required amiibo where you could group up a bunch of figures for some kind of story or game. The only problem is that Smash exists and it already takes up that crossover title.
@@housinengi9512 I know right? Most of these figures are only used once sparingly and never used again. This would make the use of amiibo feel worth while this time.
And the amiibos for Smash just gave you a training partner. Maybe if there was an amiibo game where you tap an amiibo to play as a character for an RPG adventure, I bet that game would revive the toys to life genre.
@@SeanWheeler100 Maybe if they do a Subspace emissary like story that goes with Smash ultimate but gives you bonuses through amiibo? Or you can save your character on it and take it to a friend's game for co-op?
EagleZtoTheGrave Not bonuses through amiibo. You have to tap the amiibo to take control of the character like how in Disney Infinity you have to place a Disney figure on the Disney Infinity base to play as the character. A true competitor to Disney Infinity/Skylanders/LEGO Dimensions should have you play as that figure, not give you bonuses, costumes, etc. I want a Disney Infinity styled Amiibo game! If they could make a game like that, people would have a lot more incentive to buy amiibos for that game.
This is why I only own the bowser and donkey Kong skymiibo hybrids, I originally bought them for the skylander functionality but Hey they work as amiibo so double win
I never knew this was happening. I thought they were constantly sold out because every Gamestop I went to in town (3 or 4) never had the figures or cards. They all said that they are never in stock and don't know when they'll get more. I always wanted to collect more but I guess I have to do it online.
I believe there were other factors in this as well. The rarity of Amiibo was a huge driving force in why these sold since everyone went crazy trying to get these things, but not too long before this game was released they were becoming more common. They were also about a year old and the hype was just dying out by this point. The Smash line was definitely the biggest line out there and it was almost done by the time this was released. They likely just wanted to use another big series to get more attention as a replacement but of course that didn't go too well. Good video though.
I think another very important thing to note is that even at their absolute best Amiibos don't really do anyting beyond unlocking content. Even in Amiibo Festival they're just glorified controllers; the game comes with an Amiibo and since you can use guest tokens you're basically buying a game exclusive peripheral that you need one of and I can't really use with other games. That's not toys to life. In every other game you tap the Amiibo once and then put it back on your shelf or stuff it in a closet. Compare that to Skylanders where in like the first hour of non-tutorial gameplay I was swapping Skylanders constantly and had to keep them on the portal to continue enjoying the game. I bought Skylanders beyond the starter pack when I bought the main game because I knew it would expand my fun. If I pick up an Amiibo with a game the two events have nothing to do with each other.
I don't think you understand enough about Amiibo Festival or Amiibo in general. A little embarrassing to be honest, especially with so many assumptions.
But they’re still making them, and with games such as splatoon with rare outfits, botw with exclusive armour and weapons, mario with its moon hunting and coin hunting ones, and even third party games like shovel knight having its fairies, amiibo won’t just slow down! Nintendo isn’t just jumping ship, they’re repairing that ship they blew a hone into with this animal crossing party game. Plus, they’re just nice to look at on a shelf
I have 9 amiibo’s two of which came from that set because the standard price for an amiibo here is £11 rrp though I have only ever gotten them on promo
Just this morning I came up with an idea for a Sonic game involving amiibo: It would release alongside a Sonic amiibo series, which would be compatible with the game. You would use amiibo and play as that character, and level them up by playing stages. you would also be able to swap out characters during levels, and you would have a special that you could use once your gauge was full. Specials would be different for each character, and by using a Super Sonic/smash bros Sonic amiibo, you would play as Sonic, but you would have a Hyper Sonic special that would be slightly stronger than Sonic's normal special, Super Sonic. I know people say Sonic games haven't been good lately, and I thought this would be a cool idea.
As someone who used to work in a games store, I can say amiibo festival was such a huge flop, our company thought interest in amiibo was dead and stopped stocking them despite the fact it was just the animal crossing ones no one wanted. For the record actual things which happened:; We had a BOGOF deal, and even when they where the only options left, and at £5 a pop people would not take a free one. We had a entire shelf for amiibo festival and it dropped to £2.50 and still no one brought it, and we had to sell it for the amiibo inside not the game itself. We only sold out because a scalper came, who was tbh v stupid, and brought all the copies, and we normally do a 3 max per customer rule, but we just let him take all 30 copies. Worst thing is nintendo would not take them back, even if in mint condition, meaning you had to sell them. Im pretty sure theyre a £1 in my old store and they still will never sell. Rest of the amiibo though? bah hotcakes tbvh, animal crossing is just not destined for amiibo and was better with the cards
Hopefully Smash Ultimate revitalizes the amiibo market. It’s been really frustrating how Nintendo has been mishandling amiibo (especially how rare some of those 30th anniversary Zelda amiibo are)!

Admittedly I want to see amiibo get its own game, I understand the thing of not wanting to end up with another "basically just skylanders" game, but I also admit that I basically want to see exactly that. I was one of the people that was admittedly strung along by skylanders until basically the end, but the idea of going out and fighting against evil using your amiibo sounds AMAZING... Granted the only plot I could really think of for it would basically be world of light.

what hurts the most about this game is that it looks gorgeous from an asthetic standpoint they could have EASILY made a new mainline animal crossing game for the switch. but, alas....
what happened was Nintendo was the first to try “let’s make these collectibles not toys” with smash 4 which thrived, then they tried their hand at the actual toys to life concept with amiibo festival. They realized how badly it was received and are going back to the original amiibo concept with BoTW and smash ultimate. Nevertheless, what kept amiibo from declining like the other franchises is that Nintendo as a company realized what the audience wanted and adapted it to their plans making a compromise to both the company and their fans, you can’t call a single game that did badly the decline of a concept that is still ongoing. Thanks for coming to my TEDtalk.
I didn’t have much of an interest in amiibo until I bought a new 2DS XL. Now I can actually use them, but all of the good ones seem to only be available through eBay. 😕
Outside of Amiibo festival, I think an issue with it was inundating the market with so much Animal Crossing media in a short amount of time. I say this as a fan since New Leaf and it is still popular. I just don’t know if it warranted an Amiibo based update 3 years after it’s launch, an Amiibo spinoff on the WiiU, and all of the Amiibo cards and figures. It just felt like they were artificially trying to push the series so hard to me when they could have dispersed that energy more evenly to other franchises.
With Smash Bros. Ultimate launching, I assume amiibo figures will receive a boost in sales, like they did in 2014. I know I’m gonna buy Snake, Pokemon trainer, Inkling, Simon, etc.
Amiibo is still going... Amiibo festival may suck, but they are still being made. Sure, they aren’t doing as well as they used to, but they are still being bought by dedicated people! Plus, they were optional. (For most games) Ever seen switch amiibos, yes? Proves my point. Well, not really, but there is still hope for it.
Smash Ultimate has functionality unknown as of now but it may be the same as it first was. PLUS!!! Isabelle are flying off the shelves now thanks to her being in smash bros ^^
I bought/traded all of the animal crossing amiibo cards in hopes of a switch game. So glad I predicted they'd be out of stores & be hard to trade years later! They need a series 6 when the switch game 2019 comes out!
Amiibo have survived because now Nintendo know the audience for it, they know the amount of people who want to collect them all or just want the smash ones and they know that isn't children, its collectors who want figures of these iconic characters and so they don't really have to many in stores as most collectors will order it online. Personally, I don't really care about the in game content at this point thats just a plus. Skylanders had boring characters no one cared about, Disney Infinity and Lego Dimensions didn't care about the niche market that Nintendo now caters to and whilst in terms of functionality they're the worst, but they've outlived the rest. P.s. Lets see what happens with starlink
Starlink flopped The others are basically dead Amiibo has some traction again, and again, they were NEVER like the others, even with Smash, it was always more of a collectable figure than a required thing
It would be awesome if there was a special toys come to life Nintendo game where every character that got an amiibo was either playable or unlocked content. Like the subspace emissary from brawl maybe
Saw game grumps play this and remembered thinking, when does the gameplay start? I still bought the animal crossing amiibo, for mario maker, and just for the sake of collecting them.
Me and my mum were talking about how Nintendo overstocking animal crossing amiibo was killing amiibo, and how it wasn't fair for non animal crossing lovers to see 90% animal crossing amiibos. ( I went to target and wanted to get a fire emblem amiibo, but all they had was animal crossing and waluigi.)
Amiibo sold well at first because we are familiar with the characters. Would you like a figure of (insert skylander here), or megaman? Most would chose megaman because you had a chance to grow fond of the character.
If there were more cheap almost free games that needed amiibo to play (like a loyalty reward of some kind) or if they did more things in games, then yes....Ammibos are still viable. He's right, ACap was NOT the best way to handle it as it was a $60 game that required them, and even more if you wanted Variaty. Its like a toy w/o batteries...you remember that feeling?...anyone? Maybe when New Smash comes out we can set resurgence of these, and who knows? Maybe new amibo modles? (I mean they already had alt designs for Robin, Rob, and Corrine to name a few)
With Smash Bros Ultimate coming out soon, Amiibo could really make a big comeback. They have been getting slightly better since the Switch's launch anyways.
Why it’s dying is from Nintendo tbh. They’ve only been stocking the most seen ones. Another blame is to the people who sell them like target or GameStop, they stopped stocking as much. Probably when SM5SH comes out, it’s probably gonna change. Hopefully.

I didn’t have much of an interest in amiibo until I bought a new 2DS XL. Now I can actually use them, but all of the good ones seem to only be available through eBay. 😕
amiibo was always meant to be an optional choice for playing games. They weren't mandatory for gameplay since Day 1.
Amiibo Festival, money buys happiness.
With Smash Bros. Ultimate launching, I assume amiibo figures will receive a boost in sales, like they did in 2014. I know I’m gonna buy Snake, Pokemon trainer, Inkling, Simon, etc.
Toys R us always had a wall of Amiibo. Nobody stocks amiibo like them.
They’re still making Amiibos! I can’t wait for that joker amiibo...
Amiibo festival was a punch in the gut, in the amiibo and animal crossing timeline.
AC:AF isn't the only gamě that requires Amiibo, Mini Mario And Friends Amiibo Challenge for the 3ds and Wii U also require them
Where I live the only way to get amiibo is by waiting until EB games finally gets like two amiibo, and their not even good ones too
Smash Ultimate has functionality unknown as of now but it may be the same as it first was.
Except for smash ultimate which brings the freaking character to life for you to train.
To be fair, toys to life was basically DRM in physical form
I can't wait to get my octoling amibos for Christmas then my collection of Pearl, Marina and the octos will be complete!
Starlink flopped
The others are basically dead
Amiibo has some traction again, and again, they were NEVER like the others, even with Smash, it was always more of a collectable figure than a required thing
It would be awesome if there was a special toys come to life Nintendo game where every character that got an amiibo was either playable or unlocked content. Like the subspace emissary from brawl maybe
With the release of SSBU, I’m sure a resurgence in amiibos will happen
I wonder if I should grab the Animal Crossing amiibo now since they are so cheap. If they are at 5$ each I could get about 3 for the price of one
I just have some because they look nice
I snagged 3 of them at Five BeLow and the Triple Pack at Best Buy so look there if you wanna hunt the cheap ones down.
Nintendo could get away with an all-amiibo-inclusive game across all platforms. If they started the base game at $5 then it would sell like crazy
“There is still ambo”
No. Amiibo are definitely making a comeback now that there are new Smash ones.
Amiibo sold well at first because we are familiar with the characters.
Would you like a figure of (insert skylander here), or megaman? Most would chose megaman because you had a chance to grow fond of the character.
One word,
Smash ultimate.
Edit: i just realised wtf
well now we have Smash Bros Ultimate and it seen the amiibo populairity raises again, but only slightly
No ones gonna say my chibi robo amiibo is bad
Yo Im proud that I got my wedding bowser before they disappear
They had Animal crossing amiibo festival at my local EB games and it was less than $5
With Smash Bros Ultimate coming out soon, Amiibo could really make a big comeback. They have been getting slightly better since the Switch's launch anyways.
I've originally read: The FATTEST AMIIBO)
All the stores around me has them, but all the ones no one cares about. I dont even remember when was the last time new stock came in.
Have you ever noticed that this guy may be the same dude as Arlo, you know, the Nintendo obsessed puppet
animal crossing amiibos ended up being kinda rare in my country. it took me over 2 years to collect them all.
My Walmart doesn't even sell amiibo anymore
Why it’s dying is from Nintendo tbh. They’ve only been stocking the most seen ones. Another blame is to the people who sell them like target or GameStop, they stopped stocking as much. Probably when SM5SH comes out, it’s probably gonna change. Hopefully.
Mario party 10 has the amiibo party game mode where you need an amiibo to play
I find it hilarious how Arin a man who is only one tier above DarksidePhil in terms of being fucking god awfully bad at video games despite being a Let's Player ends up winning what is essentially a Mario Party clone (a bad one at that) thru bullshit and RNG
