The Indiana Harbor Belt, U-4 0-8-0 was a three-cylinder steam locomotive with a Franklin auxiliary engine (booster) on the lead truck of the tender. The "Harbor" had three of them and they were built by Alco's Brooks works at Dunkirk, NY in February 1927. They were the heaviest and most powerful 0-8-0 switchers ever built and were retired starting about 1950. I had one of those Rivarossi IHB 0-8-0s as a kid in the 1960s. Thanks for sharing!

😊the tender drive version was the last version built of the 0-8-0. There were two other versions a veticle motor mount in the engine and a horizontal motor mount with a geared down motor in the engine. None were great runners as far as slow speed running but always looked the part of a really powerful loco

Very nice work getting her complete again! The plastic frames were a (short lived) transition phase in Rivarossi production between the standard cataloged IHB 0-8-0s and the Zamac ones. The majority of these were created with the intent of testing the plastic's tensile strength, and by my estimates, probably did not last for over a couple months. The plastic turned out to be very good in strength, and that was standardized in all IHB 0-8-0s that followed with the new drive system.

Pretty interesting that the 0-8-0 has some hidden features up its sleeve.

Very nice locomotive, Daniel. It's always good to keep a spare on hand for parts. Funny, when this came up in the list, just under it was the same locomotive Harrison worked on a year ago for Dawson, and it looks like that one may have had the plastic tender frame. Harrison also has the Indiana Harbor Belt RR 0-8-0 of his own. Maybe it's the one you're looking for?
    Thanks for sharing. 👍👍👍

Dan, In 1957 Lionel started in HO using all Rivarossi engines and cars including a 2-8-0 consolidation with motor in the tender, it had a zamac frame that deteriorates and is very hard to find a good one today, These Rivarossi trains were in orange Lionel boxes and most of the trains had a small encircled L to identify them as Lionel, In 1958 Lionel went to Athearn for their HO

Hi Dan, I recently salvaged an 0-8-0 with the "booster bogie" tender. It's missing the front pilot and smoke box face. I've seen the face for sale but not the pilot. I've looked at some exploded diagrams online and it seems some frames had the pilot as a part of the chassis in one big piece. My version seems to have it fitted separately. Any tips on where to find parts? Am I better off buying another cheap 0-8-0 to salvage parts from?

I suggest a parts loco, that way you can Frankenstein the two together and use the best parts from both to make one very clean example. I’ve done this a lot of times in the past and it’s always yielded good results. Good luck with the project!

@@dirtydanstrains1414 Thanks, Dan! That does seem to be the more economical solution.
