I had a few people with allergies come into our restaurant, they want us to check the boxes that we get delivered, for their specific allergen. I had to tell a woman who told me “are you 100% sure there is no wheat on this, I’ll get a severe reaction” this after asking 5 diff people and going on the ingredient list of company who delivered to us, I got so nervous that I told her “look I cannot 100 percent garantee that there is no wheat added to this clam chowder I would not put my life in the hands of others because there are always errors with ingredients, there is none listed on the box, and 5 other employees said no wheat, but I would not take a chance if I were you” it is so scary that even a little drop can cause this, every time I was asked I would say that I cannot and will not garantee. This is so tragic I’m so so sorry that this happened
Amen! I was the same when I worked in food service. We were not a nut free, dairy free whatever else free establishment. My boss always told employees to make that very clear to customers with allergies. We would do our best but could make no guarantees.
I used to work at a bar that also served a good amount of food. Occasionally, we'd get ppl with severe allergies who'd ask for info. I would tell them "I wouldn't risk it. This is a bar, not a legit restaurant". We couldn't even pass health inspection on the first try so that's already a cause for concern!
As the mum of a son who has life-threatening allergies, I find this heartbreaking and terrifying in equal measure. My heart goes out to this lady and her family. Absolutely tragic.
I have some allergy training, and I don’t think it’s expressed enough just how dangerous milk allergies can be. You hear about nut allergies and allergies to other things that can be really serious, but milk allergies aren’t automatically *up there* with the most serious cases. I will definitely be taking dairy allergies a LOT more seriously from now on.
That's a fantastic idea...i have some really bad allergies and always feel like an "annoying customer" asking them to double and triple check what they have used.
That is a really good idea to possibly avoid such a tragedy like this in the future, but I hope you do realise that by doing this option to ensure your own personal safety it completely eradicates any element of trust you're meant to have in your fellow man, which is really sad by the way😥 I don't believe Hannah and Abi were perhaps as reckless as some may think as both of them would of had to have acknowledged that there was still a level of risk in deciding to eat out, even if they truly thought it was quite low as they were just grabbing cups of hot chocolate☕
As someone who worked in hospitality I was always SO vigilant when it came to allergies. You can never be too careful. I really believe hospitality staff need to be trained more on this as it is so important and can cost a life as we see here. Just awful.
I’m not in hospitality but once at work a coworker practically made fun of me for being nervous about cross contamination knowing that we had people with allergies. People don’t take it seriously.
I agree, I've always worked in hospitality, and I was a manager of a Costa for a few years. Costa is the the most demanding company I've ever worked for, when it comes to company standards. But I refused to employ students after being there a while. They don't care about anything and will always cause you more work. The amount of times I caught people cutting a vegetarian sandwich with the bacon knife. Putting full caffeine coffee in when people had asked for low caffeine. You always do food quality when in hospitality, but I never remember learning about allergies(except for allergies to plasters).
I'm in hospitality. My place of work has a rule where we always ask customers if they have an allergy or if it's just a preference when they ask us to take something out.
Why are people victim blaming here. You don’t know the FULL story of wha happened. This woman has lost her daughter, she does not need people judging. Please show some respect
@@bethgoode1227 exactly, the people arguing in the comments are probably the type of people who wouldn't carry an EpiPen. My mum would stress to my brother to always carry his EpiPen, even though he's never had a bad reaction to something he eaten. (He still doesn't carry) But If it did happen, I kid U not , the 1st thing my mums gonna ask him where his EpiPen was and give him a lecture
well actually if we had robust training for food safety in all establishments, you should be safe I've worked in fast food and in one place they drilled into us hard food safety, and so we all knew and understood
Wouldn't any hv helped? And just wondering if this little girls allergies were so severe, why didn't mom and daughter hv EpiPens on them! I hv family members severely allergic to bees, they don't go anywhere without the epis
@KarlaAnn-if9jm epi is ridiculously expensive, and people can develop more severe reactions to their allergies over time. Something you're only mildly allergic now could suddenly cause you to drop like a fly upon contact in 15 years
Labelling the drinks won’t stop server errors. I always ask for decaf coffee but have been served caffeinated coffee before, despite their being a label on the cup.
In Starbucks I always get decaffeinated, They manage to do it. I know it’s decaffeinated because I don’t get a reaction from it, I feel perfectly fine after drinking it. They also manage with my soy milk thankfully.
I have gluten allergies rye, barbley but just blessed I have nt died eating unwanted foods. but I feel poor girl must have some major autoimmune symptoms and very low .r.i.p
@@coacht1738 It’s not the body! Epi pens have 2 colours, one end is orange and the other is blue! I The blue end is the safety cap which you remove before administering and then you firmly press the orange end in the thigh! And then you must go to hospital still!
I know that people today don’t seem to get this, but it’s entirely possible to hold two emotions at once: 1) that this is a tragedy and 2) that this was largely preventable.
My issue here is why hasn’t costa apologised? I ABSOLUTELY agree that some people working at Costa have a rude attitude when it comes to ordering , this is ABSURD that they have emotional people working there! Costa needs to apologise and she needs to SUE! Its unfair especially i feel like some people serving at costa don’t have a conscientious way of working because if they did, they wouldn’t have made that mistake! Allergies are sudden and random!
I totally agree, Costa need to address this but this was a franchise store. The actual Owner of the store or the company that owns the store needs to apologise. Costa (owned by Coca-Cola) is a different business. In my area, most of the Costas are owned by a company called scoffs, im sure this will be a different franchisee, not scoffs, but they need to be prosecuted and answer the questions as they are in charge of staff training and liable for this
If you have life threatening allergies you cannot eat out. You simply cannot trust that others will care to do the right thing. My condolences for your loss.
I so agree. I've a severe nut allergy. I carry both epipens everywhere. Can't even count how many times I've even been given salad containing nuts. So sorry momma heartbreaking.
@@Summerbunny15 you better remove this insensitive comment or the curse sent to the other commenter will be your portion too. You cannot go around making unsympathetic comments in a tragic matter.
The level of victim blaming in the comment section is bonkers. An investigation confirmed that the proper procedures were not followed. Due to negligence, a child lost their life, and the mother deserves to be compensated. Companies only seem to take notice when their finances are affected, which is why, during the peak of cancel culture, businesses began to prioritize their actions, lest they face closure. Period.
That's the problem - ive worked as a chef for past 20 years. People like telling you they are allergic to anything they dont like. Some we take seriously, most of them, we don't. Sorry not sorry - that's the reality. I work in the seafood restaurant now and I had people coming over to be allergic to oysters and their partners ordered oysters. Or people allergic to tomato, but they wanted tomato relish, they just didnt like sliced tomatoes. My point is - if someone is SO freaking allergic to anything, as a mother, i would NEVER take a chance to put my kid in risk. Just use your brain - do you seriously think people will follow your demends? No! Not in a busy place like Costa, so why would you even try to go there, if you know that your kid is so highly allergic to most things they have there? It's a huge tragedy, but it could have been prevented.
@@Introverted.Bookworm @Introverted.Bookworm I think, I'm nothing more than a human and everyone who ever worked in the busy restaurants etc. tells you the same thing. It's not that someone does things on purpose, but under pressure of time - its easy to make a mistake. That's why if you have a real, severe allergy - you should really avoid eating or drinking out. Or always has your EpiPen ready.
Costa does this all the time, my sister ordered a vegan pumpkin spiced latte as she’s intolerant to milk and they still put cows milk in it. The barrister said it’s classed a vegan as the syrup doesn’t have milk in it … but they still added cows milk?! If you’re allergic, intolerant or a vegan, keep an eye on your drink when they make it as they’ll put any old milk in it regardless of what you ask.
With everyone talking about epipens, you're often not prescribed one until *after* a first anaphylactic shock (this happened to me). This may be why they did not have any.
They had her tested at two where it was revealed she had many allergy’s including cows milk. Nonetheless this is tragic with so many allergies any meds to assist during an attack is mandatory and super vigilance when ordering..Hard to fully monitor when ordering in places where you are not in control. That’s why the epi pen or whatever else she took during an attack needed to be with her at all times. Also ambulance should have been called immediately.May the young lady R.I.P..
It’s like people comment before having all the information. The girl did absolutely have an epipen. Mum admitted she didn’t have it on her that day. The dentist offered her one but she refused.
I'm not blaming her at all but she did say that the pharmacy where they got the medication that they first gave to her daughter that didn't help with reaction, is the same pharmacy that provides them with epipens normally so she was definitely prescribed one. I guess for some reason unfortunately mum did not have one on her at the time, and neither did the pharmacy. Well, not one with the correct dosage anyway.
They didn't have pens with them but where definitely prescribed as she new the dose of the medicine that she didn't have, hence why the pharmacist meds did not work as it was a lesser amount no one is wrong in saying if your given meds for somthing so serious you should be carrying them with you
I have a life threatening allergy to peanuts and for this reason I do not eat from places like this - fast service fast delivery often by people who do not speak fluent English ! It’s just too risky -
I am a parent of a child with life threatening allergies. It took me along time to get over the constant anxiety but u have to let them live. I still get it as even i getting scared those who know his allergy will sabotage him in some way, for a joke, for anything, all sorts go thru ur mind. That said we have to rely alot on others n that leaves alot to be desired. Its very important we stress the allergy our child has. What i dnt understand is why she didnt have her epi pens. My child religiously carries his everywhere n he needs two epi pens. Any help that aids allergies is welcomed. My son uses restaurants that uses sepwrate kicthens for allergies. Ambiguous restaurants like costa my son wouldnt eat in. He panics alot too due to his condition. So sad for this girl n family ❤🙏
@Fredrica2.0 I'm not quite understanding as epipens are issued to those who have anaphylaxis, if there was a shortage they can order from another area thru a docter, why did she need to go to a chemist? Was she not issued epipens? Was it clear she had anaphylaxis? Did the mother follow up prior with medical care being the normal route is specialist allergy clinic...or was this a sudden anaphylaxis attack?
@educational1651 but I still dnt get why the girl had no epipen if she had anaphylaxis 🤦♀️ n why refuse the epipen at the dentist 🤷♀️ n why not go bak to the dentist 🤷♀️ I have so many questions about this situation 🤔 it's a very tragic situation regardless of course
I’m surprised she didn’t have Epi Pens on her 24/7 when I had a severe allergy to MSG my doctor gave me and advised me to carry an Epi Pen on me at all time’s
Especially when ordering items that are usually daily and nut laden with a milk and nut allergy. She ordered soy, but in a busy place cross contamination and mistakes happen. The staff could have misheard, miscommunicated, been tired and grabbed the wrong one, etc. The cocoa also could have been contaminated.
Poor kid RIP. I suffer with chronic alleges and i now how horrible it is. I was advised by the hospital doctors to be careful about everything can start my alleges off.
I don't think they clean equipment that frequently. You can't separate dairy milk from whatever other milk they use. These workers are overworked and have no time to do every little thing you want. If she was that sick, she should have known that eating out is always risky.
@@teoleno4019 so if they could not accommodate the request, they should have said that. It’s that simple. This little girl might have kept her life if the worker advised they could not ensure no allergens would be present in her drink. However this was not due to the equipment being contaminated but the worker not using the correct substitute at all.
It doesn’t matter if a hot chocolate is made with soy milk…chocolate itself contains dairy. Even the hot chocolate powder you buy at the store and can make with water contains dairy. You’re not getting rid of the dairy just because you’re making it with soy milk….dairy is still in it. Why wasn’t this discussed at all? People with a dairy allergy can’t have chocolate….most chocolate is made with dairy…chocolate to make hot chocolate is made with dairy.
It’s the mom’s fault she should only have water, tea, & juice. Strict discipline diet when it comes to allergies. Eating out for her was dangerous and yes chocolate has milk 🤷♀️
Vegan chocolate exists. No , there's cocoa powder and chocolate drink powders , two very different things and it's entirely possible to avoid adding dairy.
@@VSaddictionit's not her fault. She did everything right. You can't dictate that a person can't have certain things. Dairy free and vegan chocolates are so commonly available now that it's hard not being able to get it in the UK. Even in my flat we only have vegan chocolate left, my husband got it for free at work . That's how common vegan chocolate is.
@@MrsElizaMarieand they still mess up orders when ppl say they can’t have dairy, it’s actually ridiculous. Or they only have nut milk alternatives when so many people are allergic to nuts😭
Who would even DRINK HOT CHOCOLATE knowing they are allergic to dairy!? Why even do that?! Makes zero sense. I’m not understanding what else hot chocolate would be made of… unless oat milk.
My 3 year old has a dairy allergy (thankfully not life threatening) but she’s been given dairy at least 3 times at cafes. It’s awful. People don’t take it seriously! Edit: please read my reply below before commenting. Wow people are rude.
My child has a milk allergy too. I wouldn't trust any barista/server to use an alternative milk, even if I asked for it. The likelihood that a person might make a mistake is just too high.
I have been a barista and it's a very stressful, busy job and mistakes are EASILY made. Please don't trust a random young girl with your child's health. It's not ok.
Yeah I get that 100%! I have a cousin who has a mild allergy to peanuts and whenever I’m out with her and I literally say that she has an allergy to peanuts but then she says “no it’s fine. It’s not that bad” but I tell her that even if it’s not that severe or even just mild, it can still give you a reaction and it could get worse at any time so you always have to be careful.
I go to a coffee shop regularly and they always ask me if I have Allergies and make me feel very comfortable about it and that should be the standard, tragic.
Shame on the person who prepared their order, but mistakes and carelessness do happen. If you gave severe allergies you probably shouldn’t be patroning restaurants that are not allergen free. You can’t expect someone else to be responsible for your health. We have to accept that we cannot be entirely inclusive. Horrific tragedy.
I think the person preparing the hot chocolate did this on purpose because she didn’t take this woman serious and we know how people operate today. They’re very spiteful. I would question the person that made the hot chocolate in a police station.
Allergies are becoming more common as it stands. So what's the plan-ban those with allergies from coffee shops altogether? Maybe go the extra mile and forbid them from going on holiday, too? No.The responsibility is on the eatery. I used to work in food service, and let me tell you, I didn’t have a clue about allergens. Instead of brushing off 'careless mistakes,' how about training staff properly and taking allergies seriously?
@@tammiep9628 I think they didn't understand English very well from what I've gathered from this story. But even then, companies should require certificate that the person they're hiring knows an adequate level of the native language to the country they're working in.
NO you cannot. Humans mess up, and therefore, cannot be trusted with certain things (not everything, of course). This is an obvious fact! This mother lost her child, so you are wrong. You can't trust restaurant employees with things like this.
Some of the comments I’ve seen on here are absolutely disgusting, hurtful and judgemental! Don’t you think her mum is punishing herself enoughfor what happened to her daughter, without having to read these comments on top of everything else? As far as I’m concerned the blame lies with the employees of Costa Coffee and no one else! My heart goes out to her mum and the rest of her family.
No it does not. If people take accountability for their own actions and and apportion blame a lot less would happen Everyone here seem to have been negligent in some way. Even though the barista did it perfectly and there was cross contamination, she should have had the epipen in the correct dose. You cannot place your life in someone else's hands. I think it's simple as that.
"And no one else?" That's where you're wrong. You can't entirely put this on a minimum wage barista who works in a busy coffee place where is cross contamination is very likely? You're responsible for your own allergies.
@@ProductiveChi if that wasn’t made clear on the packaging then it is the fault of the company who supplied the drink to her daughter. I think the mum has suffered enough without everyone blaming her for this.
That was my thought. Like he or she probably thought the customer was being extra and disregarded the request. If it was intentional, they will have to live with that. Something so simple was not done and cost a child their life
@@michaela1541 it’s no excuse, but usually these places are understaffed. Sometimes you’ll have 2 people doing the work of 6 and not being paid more, getting breaks etc. So they’re more prone to errors and care less, unfortunately.
Costa is to blame for giving her the drink but the mom made many fatal mistakes too that contributed. You should have immediately called the Ambulance for your daughter. And even when the pharmacy ASKED you if they should call the ambulance you said NO. But before all that you should have had the epipens with you! At all times! The time you spent going to the pharmacy, you could have administered the pen and driven to the hospital to make sure it helped her. In life we have choices and unfortunately you made many of the wrong ones.
People panic in such situations, that’s why they say family members aren’t the best people to make decisions with their loved ones care because they are not thinking rationally ,I’m medically trained but lemme tell you something when my niece had a temperature and her mum was panicking all my medical knowledge left me it’s like I just froze all I could do was hug her . I lost one of my friends due to a similar situation , her family made choices that wouldn’t have been made if they were treating someone else . I can’t explain it but it’s like we are blinded because of that emotional attachment 💔
You should have more sympathy in how you worded it because she could be reading things and you're directing them towards her. She didnt' call the ambulance because she clearly said her daughter always calmed down after using the epipen but that time was different. The ambulance was called regardless after the mother noticed it was more serious. If someone's grieving someone, you don't have to tell them they made so many wrong choices like if you're scolding her. You wouldn't like that if you were her in her shoes. The mother clearly said she's thought what she could've done differently repeatedly but the main one to blame is Costa because the mother made it clear from the beginning that her daughter was allergic. The daughter had drank coffee from there before without a problem so it was the employees fault mainly. The family wouldn't have had to go through any problems if the drink was made accordingly. Another family woud've sued Costa coffee but not all families have the money to go through that and going through a court process while grieving would be emotionally challenging as well. The company could've at least offered an apology or some kind of compensation for being the direct cause her daughter passed but they didn't do anything
I agree. The mom says it happened so fast. Disagree. Daughter going to bathroom, mom following afterwards, Leaving the dentist, running to pharmacy, talking to pharmacist, getting the lower dose epi, denying help to call 911, then calling. Geez I could go on. ALL these things had to be at least 15-20 mins of wasted time.
I am having a hard time understanding why they didn't have an EpiPen on hand at all times and why they allowed their child to eat outside the home! I am on a special diet and I haven't eaten out in years nor do I eat at other people's homes! Did they not have the EpiPen because the manufacturer has drastically overprice the medication, it is expensive? I am sorry for her loss!
I was wondering this as well! Most people (at least here in the U.S) who have severe allergies always carry their own epi pen everywhere they go...Not blaming, just wondering!
@@livingstreams4677 The EpiPen also saves lives. The problems was, the family didn't have one and the pharmacy didn't have the higher dose of EpiPen the daughter needed. I still think that anyone with a high sensitivity to food should not eat out.
They probably aren't even out of secondary school. No one is perfect. Probably this girl shouldn't have gone to a place that also prepared dariy drinks. I once worked for a place that made cattle feed - they refused to make horse feed because of the risk of cross contamination. A herd of cows can be wiped out with some of the stuff they put in cattle feed, and a very small amount. Always always always stay away from the things that you're deathly allergic to!
No shops shouldn't have an epipen like they can't have a glucagon injection (for diabetics hypos) as they're NOT allowed to have these in a first aid kit. Not all stores have trained first aiders working. Not just that it's classed as ABH
No. Even a pharmacy can’t give an epi pen over without a prescription here in Ireland and that resulted in a death a few years ago. As a parent of a child with an allergy, you carry two epi pens with you at all times - one as a back up in case it fails. In school they have two. In creche they have two.
A coffe shop would be completely off the list..esp when u can easily make this stuff at home.. .my granddaughter is allergic to shellfish so that means nobody can eat seafood if shes with us...period.
I agree, I didn't want to say it, as it may seems we blaming the mother but, when you have a child with allergy you don't eat out certain places and certain things. Just my views on it.
Why?? They have alternatives to cater for people with allergies. I have allergies and so does my dad and son, always been catered for. Everyone should be free to get what they asked for.
@LeilaVividSounds I agree, but what I think the OP is saying, is if you're severely allergic to many things, you should never eat out because mistakes and cross contamination can happen. Yes, there are places that cater, but as the other comment said, they mess up, and it only takes that ONE time to mess up, and destroy someone's life forever.
My daughter doesn't want to eat at a place that sells shellfish because any cross contamination will land her in a hospital. This makes sense. Don't go to a place where the thing that can affect/trigger you is being prepared for others.
I'm not trying to be rude in any way but I seriously cannot believe that they did not already carry at least one epi-pen when she has such severe reactions. I'm sorry this happened...this woman's worst nightmare came true and it's just awful. But how could you not have an epi-pen already??? Why would you put yourself in a position to have to drive to the nearest pharmacy and hope that they have one? I can't wrap my head around that. RIP to that poor baby.
I think they are based in the UK and it’s different over there. I read a comment that said over there, you don’t have it prescribed to you until you have a severe episode also just from the pharmacy only having so much also indicates things are not the same as in the States. I’m assuming you are speaking from here as well.
It has an expiration date, besides that they may have already administered one. Whatever the reason, I'm sure there's an explanation. Give them some grace!
Costas fault too, they should give up to date thorough training to all their staff with an emphasis on allergens and food safety. The girl that served them didn’t seem to take it so seriously so the training wasn’t sufficient. The average person probably doesn’t know how serious some allergies can be.
@@caterra-I agree with most of what you said, but I think the average person DOES know how serious allergies can be because they are talked about a lot. Most of us know a person can die from an allergic reaction. But some people think it’s rarer than it is and a lot of people for some reason believe the odds are always in their own favor. Sure, there are people who can die from drinking milk but surely the customer who told them they’re allergic to milk can’t be one of those people. That is how a lot of people think.
This happened to me in Costa too. I asked for non dairy milk and they put milk in it. I'm sorry but it's not be fussy at all. It's called having empathy. It takes two seconds to double check the milk, clean a jug and turn steamer on.
People who have life dangering allergies should never eat anything outside, that's the sad truth. It's not on anyone else but themselves knowing they can die. Poor kid
I wouldn't usually comment but I think its important.. I used to work for Costa Coffee here in Ireland and it had to be one of the most stressful environments I was ever in. The company do not care of the well being of staff members so that poor guy/girl that served was obviously not trained in properly! They employ people that do not want to learn about the importance of these things it took six months before I was trained properly on coffees and that was in a different store not even by my own manager! It has taking for something like this for Costa Coffee to own up to their responsibility! We were told to aim at the kids for the hot chocolates ask do they want marshmallows and cream to rob the poor kids more! Ugh Smh!! My Condolences to this lady 💔❣️
My daughter has severe allergies as well. She also has severe uncontrolled asthma. She’s also allergic to “everything.” That’s the way the doctors describe it…and let me tell you…when the severe reactions happen…they happen fast. It’s very scary. She has to have a friend walk with her every time she leaves the classroom. There’s a plan for her at the school. She also has an EpiPen. Her allergies are so bad, the allergist put her on an adult dose of EpiPen. She’s only 9. The parent should NEVER be blamed. It’s hard for us. We just want our kid to be ok. There needs to be more training in the food services industry. I feel so sorry for this mom.
They must’ve assumed it was lactose intolerance as that’s really common compared to dairy allergy, but they’re VERY different! One gives you stomach pains, one is deadly! Anyone who works with food should know the difference!!
although i am vegan and i asked to look at the allergy sheet as the woman was unsure it says the hot chocolate has powdered milk in it so I'm very confused about how it would have been okay to have it regardless they may have used the right milk, i think its poor advertising on Costas behalf saying that u can have a hot chocolate with milk alternatives but it still having milk powder in the hot chocolate powder.
I'm not sure about Costa, but most of the hot chocolate powders they use in coffee shops already contain milk. I'm also allergic to milk and I avoid hot chocolate for this reason. in the case of this girl a mistake was made with the actual milk used, but I wanted to specify.
My kid has lots of allergies, even to grass and trees. His doctor told me one day it could be mild and the next day he could have his throat shutting up. His doctor told me to be prepared for anything.
Do you all know that you’re commenting for everyone to see and possibly this grieving mother to see??? Why are you all blaming this poor woman rather than having a bit of sympathy. I’m sure she already feels guilty enough. God bless her and her family I can’t imagine the pain ❤❤

Immediately after my kids had the dessert my daughter said mom I feel like my throat is closing it’s dairy in here! My son holding his stomach in pain! No doctors hospitals around we were in Zanzibar East Africa! I had their Epi Pen and Benadryl on hand! I give them high dosage of Benadryl immediately! Eventually my daughter airway open up and my son threw up three times! I’m having anxiety typing this! Some people don’t realize the seriousness of these allergies! Watching your kids going through that is very traumatic! I have been praying for the family! I can’t imagine! My fear has worsened 😩😢😢😢😢😢
Oh my god this is just so tragic, not only is it absolutely horrible that the Costa worker didn’t make the order correct especially after being told her daughter has a severe allergy, but the fact the pharmacy didn’t have enough dosage as well is just sad. She just kept getting let down by people. Im so so sorry for her loss, may Hannah rest in peace she was taken way too soon. I truly hope action gets taken and that this doesn’t happen again. Sending my thoughts and prayers to her family ❤️😔
Yeah that caught me as being really bad also because as well as Costa being held to account for their part in this poor girl's death, that pharmacy should definitely be investigated as well. I understand a pharmacy can't be able to deal with something as serious as a gunshot wound for instance, but they definitely should have the necessary supplies for people who have serious conditions or illnesses like diabetes medicine and the full dose of AAI's for allergies all on hand. So I really do hope they're looked into and if it's found they should have been able to have done a lot more for Hannah then there should be penalties imposed for failing to help her properly.
when she said the daughter had a severe allergy she should have said she cant guarantee its free from the allergen. I know thats what I would have said. Im not taking responsibility for someone else with that serious of a condition when the allergen is literally all over the work area.
You're correct that she kept getting let down by people. Starting with her mother. She was irresponsible and negligent by not having her medication with her.

As a family with allergies and intolerances, this is absolutely our worst nightmare. NEVER trust someone else with your life, ALWAYS carry your epipen if you are prescribed one. Personally, as i only have a dairy intolerance and not an allergy, i do sometimes have a soya drink from costa. I ALWAYS WATCH THEM put the correct milk in, twice ive caught them using the wrong milk. Will some food and drink establishments learn from this? Sadly not, because they will employ staff that dont give a toss. I have questions..do dental practices not hold drugs similar to epipen? Did this family not have theirs with them? Why would you risk getting food or beverage with such a plethora or allergies, if you dont have your epipen on you? Surely the cross contamination alone would induce a reaction for someone with an allergy so severe? I know we all want to enjoy what everyone else does, i get it, ive been there, but us it really worth the risk? Tragic, avoidable death, poor child.
Thank you for sharing this horrible experience. As a child I had a very nasty allergic reaction to milk and was always severely ill; doctors advised my mother to not give me milk and sent a letter to my local Church of England school; a dinner lady physically locked my head in her arms and forced my mouth open and poured milk into my mouth. I was violently ill and almost died. She lost her job. Never ever trust school dinner ladies.
All Dental practices have epi pens and are trained to deal with allergic reactions. She should have told a member of staff in the dentist and they would have a duty to administer care! Epi pen used and ambulance called immediately! RIP 🕊
I read in another post that the dentist offered an epi pen but the mother declined to use it. She left her daughter in the dentist by herself while she went somewhere else, that’s why the daughter called her mobile: mother had to come back then they went to the pharmacy.
That's I thought, when I heard the story, it seemed strange that a dentist would not be able to offer some form of medical care , for someone having such a severe allergic reaction why didn't the dentist/or receptionist call the ambulance as soon, as the daughter became unwell, and the mother asked for help for such a life threatening event plus can a pharmacy administrator medication, such as a epi pen in an emergency?
@AlicesonHarvey did you hear when the mum said she told the person not to call the ambulance as she thought her daughter was going to be okay after taking the medicine she collected from the pharmacy.
I really feel for her. BUT.. .. the moment she said it's OK just give her a minute she usually calms down, you took all responsibility and you can tell your lawyer to go home because it's a wrap
No. She ordered a specific drink. That it what killed her not give her a minute. She said that after the m😊edicine was administered in which someone called 911 anyway.
@@basicallyv9873 "give her a minute" is what did it pal. You don't get bit by a snake and take your time with an antidote and say... "give her a minute"
Yes she does need to be compensated she ordered her drink without milk they still put milk in the hot cocoa it was supposed to be soya milk. The barista made a big big mistake And for all the mothers out there that have allergies or children that have allergies make sure you have a EpiPen on you at all times😊
I have intolerances and the number of mistakes I’ve encountered is shocking, awareness is so patchy, if I had a true allergy I don’t think I’d ever eat out, it’s too risky. Staff often take your request as ‘fussiness’ or a choice, so don’t take it serious, cross contamination is a thing when they are busy. I can see how there could so easily be mistakes with coffee in a busy place where there is a line of drinks being made. Best stick to small coffee shops where you can get individual attention and make sure you have definitely been heard. A sticker or flag on the food or drink would help as it does give you the reassurance that they have heard you. Always have epipen with you if you have these issues too as you never know what could happen. Sadly too many have already lost their life like this
I always double check my order and wait till they’ve confirmed back to me that it’s the correct order with the correct milk. Then i take a sip and wait a bit😭
It’s very easy to say this not having been through it yourself. People react differently under stress, I’m sure the mother wishes she could go back in time and do that rather than go to the pharmacy.
I'm surprised there was no Epipen at the dentist. I'm sad her mom didn't have one. I'm beyond shocked the pharmacy didn't have the appropriate dosage. My intention is not meant to point a finger at the mom but as a parent you have the responsibility to prepare for the worst when your child has allergies especially when eating out. This is truly a tragedy and I feel for the mother.
the mom made a massive error in judgment no doubt . i dont understand why ppl wanna play games with allergies . if that was my child no chance im allowing them to eat in any shop that has 1 drop of milk in any of their food
I read they did have an epipen at the dentist and offered it but the mom wanted a specific substance/medicine and she decided to take the girl to the chemists instead. Unfortunately they didn't have it in stock so time was wasted unnecessarily.
This is so horrible to watch, and so sad… My little girl has a severe nut allergy and I always carry 2 epipens with us at all times I never leave home without them. I don’t understand why they didn’t have any 😢
Someone else said because sometimes you don't get one until AFTER your first major anaphylectic episode. Hopefully you understand now, and you don't feel like you need to backhand blame the mother for not having an EpiPen on her at the time. 😒🙄
It doesn’t make sense tho as she said in the video that her daughter also had a severe allergy to some nuts etc… as soon as your child has a reaction to any food the nhs are pretty good at testing and giving out the correct medication. She also said that she went to the pharmacy that she uses to collect her daughters allergy medicine? And they had it and home so I’m unsure why she would carry this? I carry around a bottle of antihistamines and 2 epipens. My daughter did not have to have a bad reaction either to get her epipens at the hospital… they could tell just by tearing.
@@fOX6Dtake them & that gp to court, allergies can change! I’ve got a severe nut allergy & my allergies change sometimes it’s severe to MEGA severe! Either stay at the same GP or change, don’t risk it
@@brokenseer2778 Exactly - the fact is with anaphylaxis shock you have minutes & an EpiPen basically saves your life& gives time for the paramedics to arrive. It helps peace of mind when you have allergies
This is so sad. My son has life threatening allergies but he carries his own emergency kit with EpiPens in everywhere he goes. I am surprised this was not the case here, however if she had not had a previous anaphylactic reaction her dr may not have thought she needed it. People without allergies find it hard to believe that food causes death in some poor people but allergies are on the rise and are very serious 😢
And that's another thing that I thought of when I was hearing this as well. I've got no idea why that was as it could have been carried very easily in one of their bags but I guess it might be about living free from your health condition and not letting it weigh you down, and so then to bring a AAI would just remind Hannah that she had a serious health condition for life. Also they may have decided to have trust that the hot chocolates they ordered would have been prepared the way that they had requested. But you've got to hope for the best, but l plan for the worst.
No shame to anyone but if my child had such severe alergic reactions ,I would not let them eat or drink anything I haven't prepared, and I would definitely carry an epi pen with me at all times .my condolences to the family .
You should have stopped at But. She went to the same coffee shop each time and did her due diligence to stay consistence. The person that didn’t stay consistent was the person that made the hot chocolate as she was rolling her eyes. Now she has a 13 year olds death on her hands.
@@margaretcampbell4828 There is a lot of “would have’s” from people who have never been in the same situation in the state of shock. Miss Batista should have paid attention to the order rather than rolling her eyes in frustration from the frustrated mother
As someone with allergies myself, you know immediately when you have a reaction. People do not understand how scary it is. Praying for this mother and family.
im not trying to victim blame, but why didnt the girl have her own epipens on her, you're meant to carry them at all times and she wouldve had her correct prescribed dose, and maybe it wouldve helped her enough to get to hospital
It’s absolutely tragic and again I’m not victim blaming,HOWEVER if my child was SO allergic to dairy milk I wouldn’t be taking her for a hot chocolate to Costa !!! …. Not all obviously but some of these assistants in these large chains just couldn’t give a 💩
Because as the mum says, she took a Cetirizine, which usually helps. The Cetirizine is like an epi-pen for me. It helps with my allergies, I’ve never thought it could get worse than usual, but now I’m going to get an epi-pen because it’s not worth the risk. I never thought I’d need an epi-pen, like this family, but hearing how her’s got really bad really quickly, I can see how it could happen.
@@hannahrandall-lewis7201 but after they realised it wasnt helping, they were scrambling for an epipen and they only had a 150mg when she needs 500mg. if she had her one it couldve been admisnistered sooner. I think they also said she needs/has 4 epipens. If someone is prescribed an epipen you are meant to carry around with you incase you need it. if you have diabetes, what use is having insulin at home and you're out at nandos.
'Not victim blaming but'.. Because she'd never had a severe reaction before, all of her previous reactions had been relatively mild and were managed with antihistamines. She's coming on national TV to raise awareness of this to hopefully prevent more deaths. I'm sure the mother thinks about this every day of her life, no need to kick her whilst she is down. She's trying to raise awareness to help other people!
This is so frustrating to watch. I deal with this with my child and you suffer through the eye rolls and complete ignoring when asked to be careful due to allergies. I hold my breath with every meal. I prepare 90% of her food at home but as a teenager, she is not always going to be with me. A number of people equate this to a lactose intolerance which is completely not it! Parents of children with allergies, keep your Epi or Auvi with you at all times. The injection only gives you enough time to call 911.
My heart goes out to this Mama, I only read the description and watched a few seconds and it's overwhelming. Costa are not accepting culpability due to the legal ramifications and I expect also carrying out an internal investigation. In a case such as this I would have hoped ethics, having a moral compass and taking accountability regardless of an investigation, reputational damage and financial repercussions would have had more currency. I have never heard of someone having such a severe reaction to dairy, I think as a society we should have more information, potentially this leaves an unknown percentage at risk and a society that is uninformed, with businesses needing to prioritise the implementation of mitigations.
Costa does not care and I know this because there's so many other people who have said Costa has messed up and given them dairy including myself. It's clearly their problem and a problem with their training so therefore they don't want to admit responsibility. It's too much work for them.
@HaTer-xs8sh BECAUSE COSTA MADE THE MISTAKE! If Costa didn't make the mistake, then the girl wouldn't have needed medication. The problem stated with Costa
shame on the mother ordering something from a place she knows also serves the allergen and prepares it in the same area. Dont put that burden on the poor workers.

@@ashleymorgan-kp7um agreed. The mother was offered medical help and she refused. Don't take someone to a coffee shop who is allergic to milk and Not Carry An Epipen. Also CALL 911 AND GET MEDICAL HELP.
Realistically more than the majority of the staff/job applicants are never gonna be able to get it right or really apply what they've learned in the test into active duty serving customers that do have serious health conditions. And all Costa and all other companies are doing is trying to transform the role of a barista into some sort of healthcare assistant and that's not what these people signed up for. So for all the ones that are managing to excel through the test, the very first time, the things they've learned still may not stick as it's not what they're cut out for period.
I worked in hospitality for 15 years. And its still only online training for severe allergys. I think every restaurant, cafe etc should have epi pens in the medical box and staff trained to administer the pen and also extensive training for allergys, in the same way hospital staff would be trained. The amount of times in my time in hospitality I have seen mistakes happen which could cause a severe reaction to someone with allergys is unbelievable.
This is so sad! Please don’t blame the mum, it’s not her fault😭😭💔 - My little cousin has the same allergy and it’s so scary😭 and My other cousin who is also called Hannah🥹 is a few a days older than me, not long was her birthday when she passed away last year December from peanut allergy, (eating a kebab) - She always made sure that her allergy was mentioned before ordering food from shops! The Epi pen didn’t work and along with that not sure if it was a heart attack or asthma attack! But it led her to be put in an induced coma! I find out the day before my birthday and then had to visit my cousin in ICU the day after my birthday to say goodbye! Nothing could be done 😭💔
It is her fault. Hot chocolate on way to the dentist with a dairy allergy as well. Not carrying an epipen. Refusing the one she was offered at the dentist. The mum is almost entirely to blame.
I'm in the US. My friend is allergic to some things. She was told to carry her epi pen and if she starts to have a reaction or use the pen to call 911 (ambulance). I belive if she goes out for coffee she has to make sure they clean properly. This should not have happen to this family.

They had her tested at two where it was revealed she had many allergy’s including cows milk. Nonetheless this is tragic with so many allergies any meds to assist during an attack is mandatory and super vigilance when ordering..Hard to fully monitor when ordering in places where you are not in control. The staff could have misheard, miscommunicated, been tired and grabbed the wrong one, etc. The cocoa also could have been contaminated.

Sounds like the coffee worker didn't like being asked to do something, and to spite her, deliberately used dairy milk instead of soya milk.
Exactly! And because they were both black, the coffee worker probably showed contempt towards them for supposedly being so "demanding and entitled."
I believe this too. Now blood is on her hands.
Yes. First thought that came to mind when I heard the mom tell the story
@malstarrainbow yeah oat milk, almond, soy, water. At the end of the day, it's on the coffee shop for not making the proper drink.

My 3 year old has a dairy allergy (thankfully not life threatening) but she’s been given dairy at least 3 times at cafes. It’s awful. People don’t take it seriously!
Edit: please read my reply below before commenting. Wow people are rude.
It’s not serious, until it is… don’t feel bad about kicking up a fuss. You’re not being a Karen.
Serious question: why take a chance of inducing a reaction by ordering in places where cross contamination is always possible?

No it does not. If people take accountability for their own actions and and apportion blame a lot less would happen
Everyone here seem to have been negligent in some way. Even though the barista did it perfectly and there was cross contamination, she should have had the epipen in the correct dose. You cannot place your life in someone else's hands. I think it's simple as that.
Makes me sick
"And no one else?" That's where you're wrong. You can't entirely put this on a minimum wage barista who works in a busy coffee place where is cross contamination is very likely? You're responsible for your own allergies.

Exactly. She was offered medical help for her child and she refused.

@@caterra-I agree with most of what you said, but I think the average person DOES know how serious allergies can be because they are talked about a lot.

I read in another post that the dentist offered an epi pen but the mother declined to use it. She left her daughter in the dentist by herself while she went somewhere else, that’s why the daughter called her mobile: mother had to come back then they went to the pharmacy.
That's I thought, when I heard the story, it seemed strange that a dentist would not be able to offer some form of medical care , for someone having such a severe allergic reaction
why didn't the dentist/or receptionist call the ambulance as soon, as the daughter became unwell, and the mother asked for help for such a life threatening event

Testing
What I don't understand is I have my own EpiPen because I have allergies. Why didn't this family have their own EpiPen???
My son has a bad nut allergy but the gp refuses to prescribe one as they say it’s not severe enough.
@@fOX6D Oh dear - doesn't sound very fair- it'll make you all worry more - I'm sorry to hear that - I had to go to an allergy clinic for mine....
My son has a nut allergy and hasn’t been prescribed an epi pen. If it’s been managed without the use of one, why would they prescribed it?
Agreed 🙏 sadly x
You should have stopped at But.
She went to the same coffee shop each time and did her due diligence to stay consistence. The person that didn’t stay consistent was the person that made the hot chocolate as she was rolling her eyes. Now she has a 13 year olds death on her hands.
I agree. If my child had allergies to food and drink I would prepare all their food and drink. I would not be taking chances.
Definitely!
It’s absolutely tragic and again I’m not victim blaming,HOWEVER if my child was SO allergic to dairy milk
I wouldn’t be taking her for a hot chocolate to Costa !!!
You need 2 epipens on you at all times
This is just terribly heart breaking 😢
Why are you blaming the cafe? Surely the MOTHER should be carrying her daughter's LIFE SAVING MEDICATION.
@HaTer-xs8sh BECAUSE COSTA MADE THE MISTAKE! If Costa didn't make the mistake, then the girl wouldn't have needed medication. The problem stated with Costa
Shame on the shop and the person who made and served this child. I hope the mum escalates this until justices is served.
shame on the mother ordering something from a place she knows also serves the allergen and prepares it in the same area. Dont put that burden on the poor workers.
@ashleymorgan-kp7um smh, you sound ridiculous. By your logic, we should shame deceased MVA victims because they got in a car knowing they could get in an accident and die. We should shame all victims because they woke up and left their homes knowing crime exists.
@@ashleymorgan-kp7um agreed. The mother was offered medical help and she refused. Don't take someone to a coffee shop who is allergic to milk and Not Carry An Epipen. Also CALL 911 AND GET MEDICAL HELP.
@@Youmightknow111 well, in the U.K. dialling 911 does nothing. 999 is our emergency number.

That should be something the food places should have on hand..everyone, restaurant pubs, snack shops etc.
@@stainedglass8401exactly! 😥
If you have to take the allergy test 20 times you're in the wrong job. There should be a cut off point for something so important.
That’s a very painful experience so sorry 😔 😢
It is her fault. Hot chocolate on way to the dentist with a dairy allergy as well. Not carrying an epipen. Refusing the one she was offered at the dentist. The mum is almost entirely to blame.

I'm in the US. My friend is allergic to some things. She was told to carry her epi pen and if she starts to have a reaction or use the pen to call 911 (ambulance). I belive if she goes out for coffee she has to make sure they clean properly. This should not have happen to this family.
Poor woman, may she find some peace.
Rip Sweetheart! Costa should have ensured it was completly dairy free, hence why we have the 14 allergens and allergy awareness training for a reason. 😢
My dad has Anaplayxis to wasp stings he has an auto injector, I'm first aid trained and It's trained me to also deliver an auto injector just encase.
Such a sad story and so avoidable, as someone with allergies and with a brother with a severe nut allergy I'm always scared to take him places in case staff mess up our order :(
I don’t get why you would order anything other than water or Soda from a restaurant if you are allergic to dairy. 😒 0:10

I will never understand feeling safe if I had an allergy, it comes from my kitchen only. Eating out, NO!
Stop victim shaming. There is oat milk, soy milk. They are not dairy. The problem is irresponsible workers that cross contaminate.

It is very sad but if you have severe allergies you must always carry the Epi Pen and Medication on you. You can not trust other people to be as diligent as you are.
