  • Air Filtration & Respirators are a very important part of Spray Painting and before attempting any kind of paint work you must understand the health risks especially when using 2 pack paints with a highly harmful ingredient in the hardeners called isocyanates known to cause cancer, fully air fed respirators are a great way to supply yourself with breathable air and greatly reducing any exposure to the chemicals but to get the compressed air to a breathable quality it must go through a good air filtration system so I will show you the setup I have in my workshop. If you aren't completely sure the air quality is good enough to breathe then don't breathe it, just use a good quality cartridge filter mask with charcoal & Particle filters make sure it's a nice fit and you will be protected enough to spray 2k paints.

    I'm a military aircraft painter, and I have to say that Gunman is by far the best i have seen here. It is hard to find any info on my tradecraft, but this guy does it all. Thank you!

    Love your videos, I'm switching my position from prep to painting now and I have been learning a lot from your videos. Picked up 3 guns based on your review.
    Thank you The Gunman!

    good to see this , safety is most important, how many people I see painting in their sheds with no safety gear , is unreal

    Thanks for sharing. I don't paint much, but I wear a 3M 6800 full-face mask with 3M 60921 cartridges, coveralls, and nitrile gloves when I do paint; I personally don't trust the half-masks. 3M claims that the 60921 cartridges filter out isocyanates, but they have a relatively limited lifespan when exposed to isocyanates.

    Thanks for showing us this video.
    At least I know how auto painters do their paint jobs.
    The paint garage I know don't seem to have the implementation as you do.

    I got a Wen filtration system coming tomorrow but was gonna use it for when painting but now today I saw someone commented back to me and told me it was only for particles but paint dust is a particle in the air. Got it from Amazon though so if it don't work for me will have to return the item then.

    Hey Gunny,
    Maybe they were older videos im not sure, but ive seen your spraying in a booth with shorts on and sometimes i think a tank top or just a tshirt without anything but a half mask respirator. Did you change to a safer system because of the risk or what?

  • @tanker242

    Could scuba approved hoses be used since they are approved for breathing? The big companies are gouging the market on breathing quality hoses because people usually use them for business uses.

    Of course, chemical adsorbent is required like activated charcoal, depending on the chemical hazards.
    I do know that some chemical filters don't filter out things like ammonia or chlorine, so please do some risk assessment.

    Hey Guman, loving your vid's and I appreciate the hard work you put into them, many thanks.
    Sorta safety related so here's my question:
    Do you have a vid or do you have any thoughts on iso free 2k paint? I've sprayed plenty of acrylic laquer over the years on bikes, surfboards and cars as it's the easier/safer alternative but would love to use a safe-er 2k system given I don't have a professional spray booth etc. I do however have an isolated place and large shed to spray in so would normal 2k be ok?
    If you have any other suggestions regarding a safer paint system that's like a 2k suitable for the automotive diy-er that would be great, cheers.

    What would you recommend for light paint work compressor size? Psi? Does it have to be a 230 V compressor? Any name brands you can suggest? Thanks again for a great video GM

    What product would you use to clean a polycarbonate visor if any 2k stuff gets onto it, but not wanting any of the visor damaged from the cleaning solution,
    I know when you have a glass visor you dont have to worry about a cleaning product so much, as they wont damage the glass

    Thanks for your advice.
    Are isocyanates only being used in 2K paints? Is it true the hardeners to mix with bondo or other fillers don't contain isocyanates, but MEKP instead?
    Can 2 K paint particles from a car that gets sanded, get into your blood throught the skin pores? Is a carcoal paint mask sufficient for protecting yourself against these particles?

      You can use most compressors, as long as you have the correct filters, email my mate Chris at info@spraygunsdirect.co.uk and let him know I sent you, they should be able to help, they have the best and cheapest air filters for breathing, Ani is the brand, they should also be able to point you in the right direction with what size compressor will be required.

    Hi gunman, really need your help, I want a mask as my eyes are hurting whilst painting. I've tried goggles with a half mask but not working. I've been looking at the sandstrom sr200 on eBay and I can see them for around 100 pound but without any filters, I can't seem to work out what filters I need for it to use it without the airfed attachment. There is a very limited availability of filters on eBay and can't find any anywhere really. Is it the p100 filter that I need? Can't find them anywhere. What sort of money are the filters and how often do you need to change them? Cheers. Tom. United Kingdom

    I think Weaponsandstuff93 did say half-masks or respirators with filters alone, are not suitable for babies, as they do not have the capacity to breathe through them.
    A positive pressure system is required.
    I know this is out of context for this video.
    I am talking about if infants and children needs respiratory protection from biological or chemical threats. That kind of context.

    hey gunman a lot of people been telling me that i should not connect my mask to the regular compressor and instead get a separate fresh air pump? or is the 3 stage filter is enough to filter all the chemicals produced by the compressor? compressot usially gets full of rusty water. so thats my concern.

    • @TheGunmanChannel
      @TheGunmanChannel  7 років тому

      +Diego Higa if that's the case approach with caution I would definitely be getting an air dryer for an added layer of protection

    Hello. What filter would you suggest for a DIY guy? I don't need it to give me breathable air, I just don't want to get "holes" or fish eyes in my clear coat. (It happens occasionally right now, with a basic, cheap filter) I'm pretty sure it's caused by air contamination. Is a 5 micron filter enoguh or do I need something better? I'd need something affordable that still works fine since I can't afford "pro" stuff. Thanks!

    you shouldnt be using a piston driven air compressor to breath with..... they produce carbon dioxide.....

    • @TheGunmanChannel
      @TheGunmanChannel  9 років тому

      fordaez True, but if I don't then the do gooders tell me off for not wearing an air fed mask not realizing that its most likely more toxic than using cartridges.

    • @Veikra
      @Veikra 9 років тому +3

      fordaez piston driven? It's not a piston internal combustion engine , it's an electric motor driving a piston pump. How does it create carbon dioxide in the air ?

    • @fordaez
      @fordaez 9 років тому +1

      Veikra an overheated piston type air compressor can produce CO. www.airbestpractices.com/industries/medical/supplied-air-respiratory-protection

    • @Veikra
      @Veikra 9 років тому +1

      Read that, must get pretty hot in order to make the oil fumes up and combine into CO. They don't say what they consider overheating. Fortunaly, this compressor is as big as mine and sure wont overheat feeding a paint gun. I'd still rather use a mask, less stuff in the way that can get caught in the car, and no oil fumes in my air
