So u wiggled that thang back in there? W/ out loosening any extra bolts/parts?if so how ?from what angle? Because if you made it happen from right under the engine bay the same way that bad cv came out from, then thats saying you were only able to that with ease due to the car being lifted. ?

Don't you love it when they skip the most difficult part, and just show the new part in place? "I just wiggled it in place, it's not hard at all."
      Right.

For whatever reason, when I replaced the passenger side shaft on my '05 VW Passat, it was as easy as it is shown on the video for the driver's side. The left (driver's) side is more challenging, especially after I stripped the "triple square" inner splines on one of the bolts. I undid all bolts by hand, and one has to tap the driving bit in straight on with a ball peen hammer to make sure it is pushed in completely. To remove the one with the stripped splines, I used a wide rubber band between the M10 driving bit and the inside of the bolt head to increase the grip. Miraculously, it worked.

You weren't kidding about the cover on the passanger side being such a pain in the butt. I only had 3 fingers with my Allen in order to loosen the cover.

So it isn’t only me. That top bolt is ridiculously hard to reach! Major PITA.

i've had to replace both front axles on my Q5 twice in the past 2 years. anyone else have this issue?
ths first time was because the grease bagan leaking and second was due to cracks (i could hear clicking when i accelerated).

I hear oem boots on the axles are more quality than aftermarket, lubricate your hubs every once in awhile to prevent the rubber boots from cracking

I would have smacked a 12point socket on the lock nut and brute forced it out I dont screw around with that kind of stuff working around the wheel severely impacts the time to replace if your doing the work on the ground and for money

I like to plug the outer cv joint into the hub first and then slide the inner into place

    • @EuropeanAutoRepair

It’s not too bad at all, you can either take the ball joint or inner control arm bolt loose or just pull that heat shield over the top of the inner cv joint, it’s just 3 bolts, the forward most one can be a little fight but if you get the other 2 bolts out and just loosen the forward most heat shield bolt you can sneak it out

Did you use an aftermarket axle bolt or did you do OEM for that one?

    • @EuropeanAutoRepair
      @EuropeanAutoRepair  Рік тому +1

I like to use the OEM bolts rather than the ones that the aftermarket axles sometimes come with, GKN axles come with good bolts

@@EuropeanAutoRepair thanks for the reply. I got some Duralast Axles because was out of stock everywhere I looked but I wasn’t convinced to using that bolt it comes with torqued to the specs since I have no idea if they’re even TTY bolts. I’m guessing you also torqued that bolt down to factory specs with the 180 degree turn and all went fine with the aftermarket axle?

If you are removing that axle with the leaking cv boot you may as well replace both on that axle

    • @EuropeanAutoRepair

It’ll be different, what year is that? Likely you’ll have to just remove axle bolt and 3 nuts on lower ball joint and depending on transmission undo all the inter cv joint bolts or just pry it out of transmission
