Heathers: A Scathing Look At Teenage Life (Retrospective/Video Essay)

  • For this video, I decided to try a different approach. I decided to combine a retrospective and an analysis in one video. Heathers takes the feelings almost all of us go through in high school and amplifies them to almost psychotic proportions. But this is why the film is so appealing. Screenwriter Daniel Waters bitterly and hilariously uses satire to exaggerate the dramas of teen life - including sexuality, bulimia, self esteem issues, social status, and drug use. While intertwining these aspects of teenage life, the central subject of Heathers is teenage suicide. The film seems not to look down on suicide, but in actuality, the film is an expert work of sarcastic satire against suicide.

This film is incredibly clever. It nails an impossible tone being funny, brutal, nuanced and deep.

@violetthewriter Except it was made, then.
Maybe you're not too aware of the vibe at the time. When the movie was made, the premise of upper class white kids killing each other at school was considered so absurd that the movie *had* to be a comedy. A dark comedy, but a comedy. Because mass killings at school were just not a thing that happened before Columbine, it was acceptable as a movie premise only because of how "unbelievable" the idea was. It was producable. Never again. There's no "dark humor" in it now. It's hit too close to hone.

Why don't people think this film wouldn't be made today? Plenty of poignant art pieces criticizing society have come out in recent years. I can understand that certain critiques are frowned upon more than others, but doesn't that go for any era? I'd like to know your thoughts!

You bring up an interesting point. The reason why I stated that this film would never be made today is because of the influx of top ten lists of movies that wouldn’t be made today spreading all over the internet. Among a couple of these lists I saw had Heathers in the top 5. While if the film were made today, it would certainly be frowned upon for sure, Hollywood, as of late, has been known to play it safe in terms of social commentary, especially in teen films, often using either the Mean Girls or Hunger Games template and not doing much unique with it. Even the Heathers TV show had some of the more controversial stuff cut out of it because of that Texas school shooting at the time of its release.

I saw Heathers the day it came out on video since the movie didn't play in any theaters by my house. It was in 1989. I rented it along with True Believer (a great James Woods court thriller). Heathers was an eye opener for me. Never have I heard dialogue like "You're sucha pillow case" or "Fuck me gently with a chainsaw." It was kismet. I loved the character of Jason Dean so much I would entertain my friends with endless impressions of him and Veronica at the Snappy Snack Shack. The film was a big influence in my life, however, it is far from a perfect film. Slater & Ryder were so great in the movie that I wanted more of them together because where the film really loses me is at the break up scene. After that, it's Veronica against JD and that isn't as much fun as the two of them falling in love. The first half of Heathers is so much better than the second half, but that's just my opinion.
They actually wrote a TV show pilot (not the one they made) with an older Veronica returning to town as the mother of a teenager. It happens to be her and JD's kid and the pilot ends with the revelation that JD is alive and well. I actually enjoyed it. For what it was.

i do think the first half is more enjoyable, and it’s more fun to watch them fall in love, but i guess that’s the point. that over time their relationship becomes more toxic due to JD’s behavior and their interactions become harder to watch in a way. i think they wanted the audience to feel the uncomfortableness of someone you love and adore becoming someone you can’t stand through their manipulation of you, and how that leaves you almost scared to be around them like veronica starts to become

Excellent review. The part that stood out the most was how no one really cared about Heather Chandler at her funeral, and no one cared at Martha's failed attempt including that phony hippy teacher. Society is like Heathers. It's relatable. Most of us who are not and never were popular can see how fake everyone is. I was in high school when this came out. Graduated in 1990. Love this movie. 80s had the best movies I swear

The first suicide is kinda a mistake as its more JD not stopping Veronica when she accidently takes the drain cleaner cup that JD had jokingly made. This leads to the later suicides which are real murders. With Kirt & Ram being killed but JD lies kinda saying I lie in German as the name of the bullets. I firstly thought Luger for the name but later rewatches made me go like does he me I lie in German as I speak it a bit so I checked & thus I was right. Just genius writing that adds comedy to the scene if you know German. Also I'd say the movie is a tragic dramatic comedy. with it having some tragedy with the whole movie & there is clearly drama in the comedy. Also I love the dream murder Eskimo is just a perfect joke for it. Like at first it seems real but the dream is fully shown when he kills her & we see an odd funeral. The dream is kinda hinted at by the odd pacing but you may dismiss that. Also the end is just perfection.

Scream Queen 👑 I'd like 2 make my own point here since this is me And Kai's favorite movie (and I was young when I first saw this) I was 11 and wasn't in Highschool yet. But it told me what to look out 4. And no when me and Kai saw this we did not think like parents would "They're making suicide look like Its a cool thing to do." Why am I even bringing that up? Well because we're actually called The Veronica and JD of The Grunge Era. Now before we get into Anymore of that this made it So I didn't want 2 be a Heather, but I wanted 2 be Shannon Doherty (I'm a combo of her and Veronica) Why am I such a bitch? Because I can be.... I still go by that mantra today. 2nd okay this was the 80's it was a different time, and even though it's my favorite movie It's just a movie..... So calm the f🤬ck down! Nobody's gonna watch this and sign a petition to unknowingly blow up the school. It's just a movie! Don't ruin everyone's fun! Me and Kai are called The JD and Veronica of The Grunge Era because they're tragic characters (Veronica happens to be a writer) who fell in love and only started having a good life once they had each other (she decided to take the high road) But remember the last scene in the movie, You could see that she still loved him. And me and Kai had a Very similar story when we 1st Started seeing each other (It's in R Requim 4 a Dream remake, It's in our Memoirs (my movie called My So Called Life) Proving that Love can be tragic sometimes.....but that isn't a bad thing, anymore than this movie was a bad thing..... Mostly people don't like it cause either they don't understand it or because they wanna live in Their Shiny Happy People Crap (REM I Hate that song ,I only liked REM when they started losing their religion..... And I loved movies like Heathers in the 80's. I F🤬 cking Hate Jon Hugh's movies, I never wanted a birthday with 16 candles, or 2 be Pretty in Pink, No I was looking 4 JD in Highschool and it took me a long time to find him, cause I only met Kai 5 years ago, but I definitely got what I wanted when it comes to Kai whether other people like it or not
