Obviously some amateurs are super skilled. We are talking about those fighters who have -30 fights. Or the guys who love training but don't have interest in competing. Work these 3 areas and your skills will POP!
Awesome ...this was clear and well encapsulated for a short video.... for younger fighters, if they are in a gym with coaches who can emphasize and teach these concepts, it's a true find ..
1. Effectively targeting opponent's openings using your eyes during your combos 2. Countering during an opponent's offensive rally 3. Throwing fakes to break an opponent's timing, sus out their counters
Gratitude Gabriel. I'm 72, working martial arts since I was 13 or so. Now, I can't afford a pro gym or an injury but still love to work out on my heavy bag , a mook jung (wooden man) & shadow boxing so really appreciate your advice on how to develop these higher level skills using equipment rather than a sparring session. Take care & I'll be watching.
One drill that helps me with #1 is playing offense vs defense. Essentially a round of sparring where one person is only on offense and the other only defends. The defender gets better at seeing strikes coming in and defending, the attacker improves flow and combo creativity. Got this one from Sean Fagan's channel.
Great drill, I like to layer cake that drill with students. I’ll start by just having someone’s back against the wall and learning to defend strikes In that position and clinch off the wall. Then move on to lead hand and lead leg vs defense but the person on defense is focused on clinching and controlling the opposition. Usually then a round or 2 of offense vs defense just punches. Then finally full defense vs offense
This is a common drill in Thai gyms, especially those that are more Femur style....Defense is the first key to bring elite for those fighters, since many of them are counter style
4:20 oh a tip to make your counters land more often is 1. learn how to use your angles as you throw your shot¡, if you have good enough footwork and can move in angles your counters will land easier. 2. dont be bound by only one direction, sure throw the hook because is amazing, but if you parry then throw a backhand, or hook to the body, the counter can take many forms it can even be a kick, the point is to be flexible in what it can be not always the same.
Great insight! Love the videos. I started training martial arts late in life at 32 the last 2 years but you've helped me improve a lot. Keep up the great work!
Thank you Gabriel. I needed this video. Im getting back into fighting again and was making the exact mistake of trying to perfect my jabs, hooks kicks and crosses. Repetitively doing the same thing. This vid helps me now to take a more holistic approach. Thanks again👍🏻
Good tips for the armatures. Funny how some of the biggest champs like Jones, Paquiao, Floyd in boxing just alone do things most armature coaches would go blue at but is what made their success ironically.
The first point about combos sensitive to context has such a strong parallel in business. Some presenters or salespeople fire off their full combination and talk and talk without ever seeing if there is an opening for their ideas. Is anyone listening? Does anyone care? Is this even interesting? The great speakers probe, measure, target and evaluate the impact. There is a famous study that people who speak for more than 76 seconds or so without pause make much fewer sales. You need to pause and get feedback regularly, not fire off your entire script.
Got another video request for you! You and your brother are very good at fight break downs. I would love to see a series of videos of some of your favorite fights to go back and rewatch
Cant stress the importance of feints, especially at the amateur level. I've been to decent amount of Kickboxing/ Muay Thai events and let me tell you. For every 10 fighters only about 2 utilize feints. The rest committee to every strike they throw. Be the outlier.
I've gotten much better at #1, picking my shots, by using a double end bag and that little head string ball, they teach you to look for a small and moving target, hitting it with precision
Keeping my mind fluid in thought and actually having a thought process while tossing punches has definitely been I wouldn't say a challenge but it's definitely been a hurdle. When I start to spar I do really well for like the forst 2 or 3 rounds, I think what happens is I go from an imaginary fight to working on my punches and combos lmfao. I love striking so I often go from practicing imaginary fight sequence to tossing hooks, upper cuts, jabs, south-paw back to regular to power punches to side hooks to combos lol. I think I'll slow down to 2 rounds stop reset do all over again but I Def can relate to my mind disconnecting from my body and going auto pilot so to speak.
Before I listend i took a minute to think of my 3 that I think amatours lack and first was Feints, second was differenciate on power of shots, and setting traps but i guess Feints is part of setting traps also
Gabriel it's time to make a video about our new champion Chingiz Allazov. I think all the fans would appreciate. The guy fought the best of the best and I have never seen him look bad in the ring. What a masterclass against Superbon holy cow 😱😱 He has very unique style
somthing i always did that was helpful was. use another person that is doing heavy bag when I'm on mine. aka, I throw my strikes on the bag according to whatever the other guy is doing on his bag. along with dodges, blocks and counters. so he is throwing 3 jabs and I weave and throw a body shot if possible(depends on his speed), then he throws a left hook so I block and counter or weave under it and throw a body shot, he changes position so I change position as well, he puts his hands down when he moves so I throw my jabs and other strikes. he throws a straight so I duck and throw body shots, he stops to take a breather so I begin going crazy on my bag, full assault with max speed or power or both. to do this, you definitely need visual with the person on the other bag but it's pretty good. it's like extra safe sparring. and if your reactions are slow at first don't worry you'll get there, just make sure you keep score of how many times the person outpaces you and count it as u taking a shot. if u don't then this method is less useful. IMO of course. :)
Awesome video. I started doing reaction training when hitting the bag, I feel it helps me be more attentive and have so much more variety and fluidity in my strikes. Another thing I feel like a lot of people dont do that actually helps is rythm, to disguise strikes. I no longer just shadow box, I'll put on some music and shadow box, move to the beat so its more unpredictable.
I play a beat in my mind so when I'm in the cage without music I'm fine or sparring if someone can hear the music they can't figure it out. Also I kinda give some thought to how David goggins says not to run with music.. its a dopamine hit while training you won't have fighting My gym blasts music though so I request obscure classical and blank it out, then I shadow box a ton in silence
Can you do a video on how to learn from watching fights? I wanna know what to look for when trying to analyze a fight with the aim of learning something from it Love your channel btw amazing tips day after day
Hey Gabriel, thanks again! I've been getting better and doing a bit of light strength training, but I've realised that my run cage still shows and I've stated getting worried about taking kicks and cracking a rib, is this something I should be afraid of and how should I build muscles in that area?
In my experience light impact in any area helps you develop an iron body. You could have someone put on some shinpads and throw light kicks to the body. Bit by bit you have them go harder. Within 6-12 months you'll be confident in your body conditioning. And yes. You can work on building muscle there as well.
Great tips! If you havent already can you make a video on sparring or fighting pressure fighters? I cant seem to find a good one. Im karate/Tkd guy and sometimes you cant do much since the other will constantly press you the whole time. Any tips would be great! Ty! Love the vids!!
Congratulations Gabriel on the great job you are doing!!! you are a great fighter and my favorite of course!!! i wanted to ask you some things about fighting: do we always keep our hands up in defense? when they attack us forward with punches, make us take steps forward or back? and lastly, at close range, elbow kicks help? I'm waiting for you to answer me if you can, greetings from Greece!!!

do you think that chin ups and diamond push ups are a good exercise for a kickboxer?plus lots of running
hey gabriel what's the negative effect of if i dont compete but only do light sparring?
1. Effectively targeting opponent's openings using your eyes during your combos
2. Countering during an opponent's offensive rally
3. Throwing fakes to break an opponent's timing, sus out their counters

What do you mean ? Also it’s spelled “amateur”.
Can you elaborate some of those things?
@@someboi4903 Probably something like keeping your hands down.

Soo clean. I had no idea what a salt papi was, now I'll never forget! More of this dude's science. That was so reminiscent of ruiz v josh 1

them biceps looking plumper my man
This is something ive observed in dutch kickboxers. They do big volume but they see openings as they come
