I absolutely had to talk about the Finn situation going around right now and provide my own perspective/opinions about it. What're your thoughts on all of this?! @@TheMetalTempestYT yeah just because it’s “ legal “ doesn’t make it morally right. Like stay in your age bracket as best as possible. Don’t go after someone you yourself could be the father of
I think you’re just a dork who can’t get women so you’re mad, no one in a happy relationship cares about “age gaps” Cry more, your voice matches the opinion
Totally hate him and his channel JM. I'm Gen X and his take on anything is fucking embarrassing. He knows fuck all about bands other than his own ego driven bullshit. He's a conman. Good riddance.
I feel like he always had this attitude that metalheads are dumbasses who either don't understand marketing and fall for it naively, or purposefully avoid it (framing it as a bad thing) and that popular bands inherently must have something better going on than lesser known bands purely because they knew how to market themselves.
oh absolutely. like the way he talked down to black metal fans so often on his channel or shit down the throats of modern metalcore enjoyers really showed me that he had this air of superiority to him and i was never a big fan of it. haha
Always rubbed me the wrong way that he gave that vibe specially from a guy proclaiming himself to be 'Punk' but basically never acknowledged any of the Punk DIY/Anarchist ethos at all and instead basically admitting he considered it just marketing on top of regular music.
@@TheMetalTempestYT Yeah, I know the black metal fanbase is a bit of a shitshow and filled with some of the most miserable ghouls to exist but Jesus christ dude for somebody who never shuts tf up about being a punk in the 90s he never seems to have any respect for underground music.
I believe in the interview he actually said musicians are fucking stupid because the only way they can make money is by having people go to their shows. And he called his own fans dumbasses too.
The one good thing about this while FRAUD MCFAKEY fallout is I'm finding a lot of new music/rock/metal/punk channels I might want to subscribe to now instead.
He was a 90s hardcore kid. It's not shocking that he really didnt like nu metal and was only talking about most of the awful bands he covered for the money. Stuff like Earth Crisis or Snapcase wouldn't get the same views as a Korn video
One thing that always rubbed me the wrong way about him was that he would hint at any genre or band that's been around for more than a couple years old being "dated" or "over". Like, just because something is old therefore it should be forgotten about, and everyone should be talking about the next big thing right here, right now. Another thing would be him telling bands to stop being bands and just become SoundCloud rappers because it's the quickest way to boost Spotify numbers.
Luckily persons like me are the opposite and use the tube for some kind of conservation of old and / or rare music. Hundreds of my uploaded punk / metal songs would be never been heard by anyone if i wouldn't had uplaoded them or if they would get deleted.
@@advancedhell42069 It was all for money... that dude was not a gamer at all. He often dumped on the kids he grew up with that went to the arcade all day...
I remember years ago he went out of his way not to be disrespectful. Kind of ironic as time went on. He became a miserable dude when people started calling him out for his taste in women. I truly think that was the start of his downfall
Yeah clearly. But even then, he'd rag on modern hardcore and punk-adjacent bands because they weren't "good enough" so he had a bit of that elitist sprinkled in LOL
He didn't like Punk or Hardcore Punk. Not the original stuff from the 70s and 80s. There were many times he would say it was before his time and wasn't even interested in those bands, when he wasn't insulting them. He was into that 90s 'chugga' ' chugga' 'chugga' guitar sound stuff that was called "hardcore" where the guys wore shorts and baggy shirts with baseball caps. That off-shoot of second wave of straightedge bands singing about vague topics of being holier than thou and personal politics.
I argued with him when he talked $hit about Henry Rollins. Anyone who claims to like punk and metal but disrespects Black Flag and early Rollins Band is a fraud imo.
“If I can reach my financial goals talking about something I have no interest in, just think of how I can help you build your channel about things you’re passionate about” is what a lot of his recent statement feel like. I watched most of his main channel videos in the background without paying attention but I genuinely dug his 2nd channel vids. The tier lists and such were a good watch. I rarely agreed with his picks, but there were some really funny moments in those. That said, his last active 6 months was a swift downfall attitude wise. It wasn’t “talking smack” it was straight up “talking shit”
Yeah, I know a lot of his secondary stuff was pretty fun. And he clearly had a knack for commentary. FULLY agree with the last part. It just started feeling incredibly messy and just...mean-spirited as opposed to any sort of genuine thoughts and discussion. It's just nasty.
Honestly, I don't believe there's anything of value that he can teach about building a channel that is worth paying him money. The basics are the same for everyone: 1. Regular release schedule. 2. Focus on thumbnails and provocative video titles. 3. Make extreme value judgements in your videos (things are the "best" or the "worst," not merely "good" or "ok") to drive comments, likes, and dislikes. 4. Engage with the comments in an effort to increase replies and further engagement. 5. Cut up videos to re-release in short form to increase the number of uploads and potential impressions. 6. Engage in cross-platform usage (Twitter, TikTok, Instagram, etc.). After that, it's about whether or no the content creator is charismatic enough to get people to want to stick around and if they have the capacity to speak on camera in a fashion that is interesting and engaging. The most important thing is to be picked up by the algorithm. It doesn't matter how good your actual content is if nobody ever sees it, so learning to work the algorithm is the most important thing for new creators trying to make it big, and learning how to do this can be gotten from a Google search.
I actually enjoyed his content for a few years even though my opinion of him lessened over time a bit, it's gonna make it hard to go back and rewatch his content now though after the way he talked about his fans and viewers
I really wish people would bring up his shady history in working with clothing brands, like the Asian "factories" for Abercrombie & Finch that he allegedly supervised. (imo "factories" is doing some Schwarzenegger-levels of heavy lifting there)
I'm not a metalhead by any stretch, but a lot of his opinions on the genre really rubbed me the wrong way. I found them to be very close-minded and disrespectful toward the newer generation. It was almost like he was foreshadowing his cynical exit his entire UA-cam career. I wouldn't be shocked if Finn's LinkedIn consulting plans went belly-up and he decided to come crawling back to the UA-cam grift in the future
There's a good chance she was 16 or 17. A few youtubers are on their performative outrage BS because they're an age gap relationship which is not wrong in any way if it's two adults, and totally ignoring the CRIME which is that he was grooming her online when she was UNDERAGE and in HIGH SCHOOL. If you look at the timeline it suggests they spoke online at least during her senior year of high school then Finn *magically* moves to Seattle after she graduates and they immediately start dating when she turns 18. That's grooming. THAT'S THE CRIME. This is just like the Diddy case where half these youtubers are mocking him for being in age gap relationships (which isn't a crime) and being gay (not a crime), but totally ignoring the fact he was trafficking minors across the country and r*ping people.
lmfao his take on eyehategod was so shit, “if you actually relate to these guys theres something wrong with you, you should seek therapy” buddy its just music take it easy
@ yeah there’s a number of reviewers that make their bank on negativity. I see their grinning faces in thumbnails and I’m like “damn they’re paying their electric bill with this one!”
dude was a 90s punk/hardcore guy who talked way over his head. i enjoyed some of his stuff, but groaned when he talked about stuff like nu metal, black metal, etc. that he wasn't into. dude looks like the poster boy for 90s victory records
Dude listened to a couple seconds of the song "Power For Power" by Swans, Said it just sounds like Sonic Youth and that he didn't need to listen to anymore..
I enjoyed his content here and there for a while, but after a certain point something just kinda turned me off and I couldn’t really tell what it was at the time. He just seemed so obnoxiously judgmental about anything that he didn’t understand or wasn’t into. I also always found it odd that he would call certain people “terrible people” or “pieces of shit,” yet he was totally cool with defending and looking at the positives/ ignoring the problematic behaviors of people like Ronnie Radke and Blair White. Idk, he just seemed very inconsistent with how he displayed his values and morals.
I was never a fan of his, well, because he has unpopular opinions... And because of his unpopular opinions I have been watching him. Was it a hate watch I don't know... Definitely didn't like his personality but liked the themes I guess.
A late 20s to 18 age gap is not only legal, it's perfectly normal. The compatability of two people who are adults is entirely dependent on their personalities. Do you know anything about their private life? I'm ten years older than my wife. Am I a creep? We have a great life and love each other. We met when I was 30. I think if you protest too much about these kinds of things, it might mean you might be trying very hard to distance yourself from your own preferences (which might be something to actually worry about).
I don’t think it’s the part where they were both adults that people were being critical of. It’s the part where he was working on this particular person well in advance and literally waited until exactly 18 to pounce. The brash obviousness of it is what comes across as gross more than anything. IMO at least.
@twall91 So he understood the illegality, the inappropriateness, and stigma of being _with_ a person underage, respected the law, and as far as anyone knows did nothing intimate, and further _waited_ until she became an adult, and then she willingly became his partner? Omg, what a monster. I mean ffs, if anything, if she loses interest or he treats her poorly and they break up, she'll still be relatively young, but with a greater degree of experience perhaps than her peers. That'll hold true even if they stay together. Women, even younger women, like men older than them, but they rarely talk about it. Women in fact are very tight-lipped about what they _really_ like and actually want. Female social capital is reputation and it is carefully guarded. You'd be pretty freaked out by what women actually think about men, relationships, sex etc.
Finn was a biiiig inspirational source for me creating my channel. Particularly his format, editing, and story outlining. The negativity in his later video really did suck tho; it did start to feel like the passion was lost and he was “going through the motions” for the ad revenue. From a marketing perspective he makes a lot of good points, but I think his “core” passion got lost along the way. This whole situation kinda reminds me of the Hey Arnold episode where Arnold meets his favorite author to do a school report on her, but she turns out to be a miserable old hag who despised her own work. Arnold still liked the books tho and still did his report saying she was his favorite author, despite her being a cunt. Eventually the author realizes the nuance of Arnold’s inspiration from her and by the end of the episode we hear her writing again. Idk if Finn will ever be back though.
That's honestly so fair! I really did appreciate a lot of what he did in terms of putting some bands on people's radars and he clearly had a lot going for him on his channel. I cannot say he ever inspired me too terribly much as it's never been the vibe i've went for--but I can respect the hustle he had and just how much he put in for so many people. I'm happy to hear that you took influence from him, though! Something good came outta him in the end, huh? haha! i'll have to check your channel out.
@@TheMetalTempestYTexactly man I respected the hell out of his hustle! It was the trigger I needed to get my creative shit going haha. Nice work on this video btw man; I usually stray away from “drama” stuff like this but you offered a very fresh perspective and I respect you for it. Appreciate you man!
I'm so glad you brought up the constant pompousness and negativity, because that stuff is exactly what repelled me from his channel over time. I got into his main channel around 2019 or so through his video essays, and I initially enjoyed those videos... but as soon as I discovered his second (self-titled) channel, in which he was constantly shitting on his own fanbase for not sharing his own opinions, I started getting a really gross vibe from him and his work; and it seems like his most recent interview has pretty much confirmed his lack of passion for what he does, as well as what he really thinks of his fans
Finns "problems with punk" video is still one of my favorite videos and really eye-opening to me and definitwly influenced how i view life lol, his live channel was always better and more personal and just funner. That age gap shit is funky tho im glad i never financially supported him
Agreed he said it so many times that he didn’t want to keep making the same video over and over anymore he was pretty clearly burnt out on it the burning the bridge behind him when he left was something I didn’t see coming though
His diatribe on Tom MacDonald, at a time when I agreed with his premise, still felt like he was riding rumors, gossip, and second hand info instead of forming his own opinion or listening to Tom himself.
In 2020 is when I fully became a fan of Finn because he named dropped If I Die First in one of his videos which is a very important band to me and because of that band I later discovered SeeYouSpaceCowboy with their split which they have become my favorite band. So I had always appreciated Finn’s support for everyone in If I Die First and SYSC, and supporting the SoundCloud/Emo rap scene as I found out overtime how a lot of those artist have a similar background/story to that of someone like Sonny Moore. With that being said, it’s all the more disappointing after watching that interview with Jesea Lee because like I know why he quit but he chose the worst possible ways to say and convey all of his reasons for quitting. I feel like I wasted my time by subscribing to him.
Wasted your time is a perfect way to encapsulate it. I think the recency bias may hurt some people's perspective because of course he had some value and the content he created meant something to people. But it's obviously a sting SO badly when you figure out the creator you watched just didn't care nearly as much about what you did as you'd thought. :/ but yes, really appreciated his love of SYSC. Has that going for him, at least.
Personally speaking, i still like a lot his older videos and second channel videos, and I still agree with some his music opinions but I can understand a lot people don’t like him and his content. It’s also really disappointing to see his lack of passion in his newer uploads because his newer uploads feel so hollow and soulless
Exactly! The ending is what I felt so much. Even as someone who didn't even watch him as a diehard or anything close to it, I cannot imagine what regular viewers would've felt when it started to feel so put-on and ... intentional? I don't know how else to word that, lol.
Finn never understood that music is art... nothing more nothing less... The fact he based a bands "success" off of the money they generated is rather pathetic... The absolute best Black metal or Doom metal band is never going to be as big as Metallica... Buddy just never understood that!
I haven't watched his vids in a while. But from what I remember of his vid ye he's caustic af. And he never exactly made it a secret that he was struggling with the motivation to keep going, or that he was actually more interested in pop and marketing. His vuds were still pretty entertaining for a while. The age gap thing is pretty messed up though. Thanks for the balanced commentary. ❤
For a second I thought you were gonna say he started dating someone in their teens just recently (don't really follow too many things in the metal community any more due to studies consuming most of my time, so correct me if I got this wrong), but in my opinion, if they were both adults when they got together then it isn't too bad. Still a little icky, but not nearly as bad as I was expecting it to be. Edit: Would love to see a video on something like "[Insert genre] in metal". For instance, Evanescence used Mozart's "Lacrimosa" in one of their songs, which incorporated classical music into metal.
Use to enjoy Finns videos until he had Phil Labonte on one of his videos despite him (hating on a lot of my favorite styles of music). Phil started going on about how the democrats was infiltrated by communist and Alex Jones is a cool person. Finn gave zero push back and was just nodding along. Really rubbed me the wrong way. Like I can deal with a creator being right wing/conservative, but once you start spreading misinformation and lies, I am done with you. Later found out his wife makes anti woke content, everything started to make sense.
Yeah the first time I heard him tacitly endorse right wing values was the last time I had one of his videos on in the background. Im not cool with right wing ideology at all, let alone him spewing it and calling himself punk rock.
i used to like finn he got me into more unknown bands back then like animosity, v.o.d, vise versa and genres like powerviolence or easycore in his earlier years as a content creator. he clearly likes music loool, but he kinda chose to lolcow himself out of being on youtube which is ehhh
also put me off later on when he started blabbering on marketing more often which nothing wrong with it but the direction of the channel at that point felt lowkie lazily researched videos at that point
Shame that this guy was the first UA-camr I watch that got me into punk, metal and alternative music/culture. I watched his videos almost all the time before seeing through his bullshit and finding better UA-camrs who talked about the same things but better
And that's obviously such a bad thing, when you really adore a UA-camr because they are an introduction to stuff so don't feel bad. In the modern era of people coming out as shitty people with platforms, it's not uncommon at all and it's just a sad truth. I am sorry to hear all that, though--been there done that. :(

I do hope that more deserving channels like yours get a boost from this. I think the real tragedy is how much traffic he probably drove away from better, more passionate creators. Hopefully his leaving fixes that issue
I'm 46, and I agree with what was said in this video. He did come off as arrogant, know-it-all and superious. Glad he got found out in the end, even if it was him that outed himself. I don't believe originally it was for the money. If it was, you'd chose a higher earning subject.
Never could stand him nor his stuck up attitude. These revelations make me feel so vindicated. Guess he should change his name to The Capitalistic Punk Rock Psyop.
He made the mistake of only talking about music via a business lens. This isn't sports like F1 or football, where money is key to providing success. And when you disagree with him, he and his wife always became defensive.
I hated his content from the start. Even when he talked about the whole DIY punk scene bullshit he praised and i think that THAT is what he did like in the past, the whole punk scene around where he comes from and talking about that. When he made metal videos i instantly became the biggest basher of what he did. He would take Lars Ulrich saying "if Robert was around when cliff was alive, we might have never had Cliff Burton as our bassplayer" and ramp it up x 100! This guy MADE drama. The age gap shit cant bother me, if its legal its legal, 18 and 29 is as okay as 48 and 59 to me. Hell my wife is just a year younger than me but i would'nt give 2 shits of she was 10 years younger than me. It is what it is, if you love someone truly, its fine with me, as long as you havent done illegal shit.
I Have to say I will get flak for saying this. I discovered Finn back in 2020 and Loved his videos because back then they were actually fun at least IMO. The ones where he doesn't talk about the "popular bands" he didn't like. His videos put me on bands that make my taste today like Emmure and Easycore. Then he started streaming and uploading to his second channel with more fun content than his main channel. Not only that but during a few times on his streams he gave great advice on life and goals that really helped me. As he switched his videos to focus on "popular and legacy bands" I noticed how the quality of his videos and his mood started to tank and figured that he is going to hit the block at some point. Listen I don't agree with some of his music take opinions just like a lot of you do. (I poke fun at him making fun of invent animate). I think listening to different perspectives is important. With Finn I always try to learn something from him and apply it to my thinking process. I don't want to blame Jesea Lee or anything But I'm willing to bet if he didn't upload that clip of Finn, we would not be having this conversation now. It's Funny that videos on this subject have more views than the podcast itself. I think at this point people need to just ignore it and move on. Regardless of what you think about his relationship with his wife, he's a father now. So let that be. That's it
I honestly really appreciate this take, brutal--thank you for it. I think it's important to look at different sides and perspectives of it. And fully agree with practically all of it, honestly. I think people can accept different opinions from their creators you enjoy. and honestly i think if you're watching a music discussion based challenge you practically have to to some degree! I think it's very murky and hard to define especially since there are some really complex things at work here just overall. :] but thank you so much for your PoV!
@@Brutal_Cabrera I agree with a lot of this. I still stand by his older videos and his second channel videos and he really me appreciate genres that I didn’t like that much such as: Pop. Rap and country. Also I’ve discovered so many great bands from his main channel and his second channel.
I'm with you and I feel more or less pretty similar to how you feel about the situation. I think people are being waaayyyy too sensitive about this whole thing, honestly. Would it have been better/cooler if he actually had a true passion for it? Sure. But how many people out there truly LOVE what they do for a living? Priority #1 is finding a way to support yourself and your family, by whatever (legal) means necessary. If you actually ENJOY your job, that's just icing on the cake and a nice bonus. How many of these people criticizing him, work in the service industry and interact with rude customers who they can't stand, but smile to their face anyway, because that's their JOB?!? A whole lot, I bet. Does that mean they all should get a bunch of hate for being fake posers? Plus, he made A LOT of comments in his videos that, if you read between the lines, really make all of this not-very-surprising at all. You could see this coming. He was obviously getting burnt out, and he openly talked ALL THE TIME about how he would rather cover different bands/topics, but Nu-metal or whatever else got the most views and hits in the algorithm. Lastly--so many people are talking about how smug and arrogant he was when he would "talk shit" about certain bands or whatever, but idk, that never bothered me, even if he was talking about someone/something who I really liked, because I always took it as he was only half-serious, but also half-joking, and just trying be kinda funny when he would talk about Black Metal or whatever else he would poke fun at. I just really think people are being too sensitive about all of this.
@idiot_city5444 no it would actually be gross if a 40 year old was into a 16 year old, 20 means you’re an adult, there’s nothing wrong with a 20 year old dating a 30 year old in my opinion
As fan of Finn, I seen this coming a mile a way. He completely lost passion ages ago, but I think most of his reason for leaving just has to do with all the hate he got and him just not being able to deal with it. His opinions on music were pretty frustrating at times. He seemed to use popularity as a metric to judge if an artist was objectively good or not, but if an artist was popular with the wrong groups of people, he would write them off. Anyways, i wish him the best. Hope he's happy on the path he's chosen
I always hated how whenever he would talk about or describe a band he always makes up sexual scenarios and use them as analogies which was disgusting as expected.
hindsight being 20/20 his demeanor with how he talked about things makes way more sense now. also, about your point with him being stuck in the past and not providing much about new bands and comparing them to old bands, it probably all came down to there being more to research and say about old bands via Google and Wikipedia etc.
I guess I feel a weird sense of redemption because I always found the guy super arrogant and judgemental. The thing that actually pisses me off the most was that it was all a cynical grift, and it worked.
There was a time where I actually liked Finn Mckenty, mainly because he covered bands that I didn't see get covered much with this type of video like Hatebreed, Primus or some Christian metal bands like Living Sacrifice. The thing that made me stop watching him was his attitude towards stuff like Power Metal. You can dislike Power Metal, but it felt like he didn't give the genre any positives. It also bothered me when he accused Tommy Victor of Prong being a racist with weak evidence. I am sure someone like him wouldn't be allowed to play in Ministry (an extremely left band) if he was a racist.
There is nothing wrong with having a personal opinion, which often is impacted by past experience or nostalgia as long as this is make clear. Trying to present it as objective truth is wrong in this case. It is not that hard to make fact check and present facts as facts, rumors as rumors and your opinion as well but opinion from definition is subjective. That is a general statement, as many content creators talking about many different things fell into the trap when they mix things up.
What's hilarious about this is I actually made an entire video about if music can be objective recently, so that's really funny and ironic/poetic. Fully agree with this.
He was never thet big of a channel. He didn't even get 1 mil subs and I think thats part of why he quit. His channel came to a standstill and he began to realize it wasnt gonna grow anymore. So he got bitter, saying he never cared about music
Couldn't stand him. He incorrectly used a musical term on YT and I told him about it, and his response was, "You must be popular at parties." It's under his Architects Animals video for all to see. All the spats we got in on his IG show how much of a petty loser he is.
Love the guy! Either talking about rock music, or being blunt about his business. Great sense of humor, too. His personal motivations don't concern me in the least.
I love how there are people actively farming UA-cam, like asmon etc, and yet everyone has a problem with Finn when he was always open about giving his audience what they wanted despite his disinterest.
1. He obviously loves music and in that interview he is doing the "asshole breaking-up" act of pretending to never be into it. 2. He's been completely honest in his videos about wanting to make videos teaching marketing and business, but the music drama is what gets the views and he wasn't feeling it. 3. He did market himself perfectly to get tons of views, followers, and notoriety. Even though it became the ire of his circle of fans. 4. I hope he does what he wants and makes videos about business marketing. That actually seems very interesting and he has proof that he was majorly successful doing it. I never subbed to his channels. I think he had another one dedicated to his Twitch videos. However, I would watch the ones that had to do with bands I did enjoy. Now that he has a family, taking care of them is top priority and manufacturing netrage may just be a closed chapter in his life.
I lost respect for Finn after his video on Japanese bands, dismissing an entire country's music scene as a worse version of American bands, calling visual kei a japanese knock-off of hair metal, saying everyone who likes them has a fetish for asian people (very funny coming from him lmao), he just came across to me in that video as someone who enjoyed bathing in his ignorance and had no interest in exploring new music or at the very least properly researching the stuff he was talking about. Then there was the accusations of transphobia because of the content his wife posted on her channel, and his response to that was to have blaire white on his channel... Yeah nah theres just no coming back from that in my books.
I have no idea what any of this is about but I looked into his channel just now and I've only seen two videos of his a while back, one about Mr Bungle and one about Primus. These were watched along with other channels' videos about the same bands when I was curious about them. I don't have anything to say about the guy or his channel because I don't remember but I can say the thumbnails he used and the titles of the videos were definitely a turn off.
started watching the PRMBA off an on around 4 years ago. i always totally loved his videoes back then OR i was like "This guy just relentlessly hates ska? why does he think i should hate it, too?" i didn't watch him at all for about a year but started watching again when i found his 2nd channel which was...self-titled, for lack of a better way of putting it? either way, i liked more of his content on that channel and that was when i became a paid Twitch sub to him for about 6 months. never missed a stream unless i was at work and i enjoyed the Twitch streams, mostly talking to other people in the chat about our mutual love for emo, punk, metal, and ska. met a lot of cool people on those streams. he would ask us for audience requests pretty often but any time i asked him to play a new song from metal bands i like, he would spend 20 or 30 seconds telling me directly about why he wasn't going to review a metal vid and would then say "Okay...anyone want me to react to a new song that is NOT METAL?" ....i mean i was paying this dude to talk and he would just crap all over my recommendations and requests. i stuck with it, chalking it up to "that's just his personality" and i thought he was just a troll but a funny and entertaining one. after seeing that recent interview, i wish i could get my money back. i only lost maybe $50 to him all said and done but i could have bought a new video game or ordered a few delicious pizzas with that money. the fact that he is completely ungrateful for all the interactions he had with his fans and the money he received from us has put a bad taste in my mouth. it's a bummer. i went and found some OLD vids of him from when he was going under the monicker "Sargent D" and you can tell that he actually, really DID enjoy music. namely hardcore, punk, and metal. sucks that he became such a grifter over time. honestly, i think he's depressed and i feel bad for him but i'm also gonna be more careful about who i pay for subs to. at the end of the day, i'm just a little let-down. it's like losing a friend. it sucks! thanks for reading my SUPER long comment if you made it this far. good vid.
I tried his channel. I liked the idea of being able to watch a video on a band i was unfamiliar with and learn about some of the music. He never really talked about their songs and after the videos i am still left wondering where to go to begin to learn about this band as what he said was vacuous.
I feel like Finn made the ultimate play. He made content that was intentionally bad or misguiding as ragebait, and once you were hooked into a video, he would spew his opinions, but you couldn’t bring yourself to leave the videos. He made money off of all of this, which is about the only thing that matters to him. He knew what he was doing by intentionally making others mad. In a way, it’s genius
Honestly I'm happy he's gone. I can't stand creatives who only do it for the money. Nothing wrong with wanting to make money from your creative pursuits, but you gotta do it cause you love it...that's what will keep you going. Finn never had that.
I remember one time he made a comment basically saying "Why does Metallica bother making new music when they can just coast by making money as they are" or something to that effect. Kinda grossed me out a bit. Like am I gonna claim Metallica doesn't care about money? No obviously not but for a band that could easily just coast off past hits it's obvious they are making new music cause they want to (whether you love or hate their newer stuff is a whole other can of worms) but he came off like couldn't comprehend people just wanting to make art because they want to and not without financial gain which struck me as kinda lame.
Honestly, I never understood how he achieved the level of popularity he received. Literally none of his videos added any value. He talked a lot about bands and songs and musicians, but it was painfully clear that he really didn't know anything about _music._ You mention the "smug arrogance" that he had, and that was something that turned me off, too. But the reason it turned me off is because it was so obvious that he only had a wikipedia level understanding of the music he talked about. I honestly doubt he spent any meaningful amount of time listening to any of the music. He never gave the impression that he had more than an elementary school level understanding of music, composition, or performance. Even his documentary-style videos were completely inferior to the products made by channels like Trash Theory or the Dean of Rock. He was just a dude spouting his opinion as if his feelings about something had some sort of inherent value that was superior to other opinions. I would love someone who was a fan of his to explain what, specifically, it was about him that made him worth following.
Oh yeah! It just felt like he was basing it solely off of a Wikipedia search for about five minutes and somehow finding a way to drag that out for 15 minutes long LMAO
@@TheMetalTempestYT If you like good music documentaries, check out the channel Trash Theory. IMO, he has the most well researched music documentaries on UA-cam (though there might be someone better out there I haven't come across yet). Like, he just released a 40-minute long video discussing the origin and development of The Cure's song "Disintegration" from the 1989 album of the same name. He has a 50-minute video discussing the origin and development of Industrial music prior to Nine Inch Nails. All the videos include clips of songs by bands he references so you can hear the sound he's discussing for yourself. He includes citations for interviews with the people he's quoting. His stuff is great.
He liked music and he still does, he made videos he liked and people down voted them, it hurt his ego. So now he says he never liked music, it’s like when Charlie from Willy wonka didn’t get a gold ticket in his chocolate bar and said it would have probably make the chocolate taste bad.
I liked a lot of his videos, especially his vast collection of Nu Metal content. His tier lists were funny sometimes, and I liked some of his opinions, but now it’s weird. None of those opinions are really his, his icebergs are a list of Wikipedia articles, and it’s just so clearly out of a lack of passion now
He is a case of "only the squeaky wheel gets the grease." He moaned and nagged alot and that got him views out of confirmation or just hate views. End of the day he got his dubloons.
I was slowly losing interest in him and then he disappeared for the most part, then he admitted that he was a poser basically. It was easy to see it coming.
My wife sent me one of his videos years ago. Never watched it, I saw the name of the channel and roasted the shit out of her for watching something called the "Punk Rock MBA".
It’s confirmed he was 34 when she was 18 dating. It’s not confirmed when they started “talking “ so grooming allegations are just here until he clears the story but as we see you tucked tail and ran. I’m convinced his last interview was a cynical take to deviate people away from those allegations.
He was a 90s hardcore kid that really only liked that, terrible modern rap and pop country. He talked about nu metal because that was what got the most views. He really had no knowledge of music outside of victory records and bad rap. His views on post punk, and "indie" (stuff that was in the punk scene back in the day like Sonic Youth) were just ridiculous.
I think I clicked on, maybe 2-3 of his videos over the years? And left within a couple minutes? Dude always just seemed… off, to me. Everything makes so much sense now. I’m glad the information came out and we can all publicly know he was a turd the entire time. Good riddance, man. Any alternative scene will appreciate the absence lol
Former Finn McKenty Patreon subscriber here. I can confirm that he had the nerve to call us "some djenty... band" (our stuff was much closer to 2000s era metalcore just with 9-string guitars and now 10-string guitars). /srs
I just remember becoming painfully bored with his videos because they were clearly just him reading off Wikipedia pages, which of course he admitted to later
His problem was that he decided to cater more to the audience that the algorithm sent him. People gave him slack, saying he preferred emo rap and pop music to more current heavy music. He had a better argument for that than covering bands or engaging with fan bases he didn't like. He should have stuck to his guns and was like I hate nu-metal and butt rock culture instead of catering to it.
I honestly don’t give a shit what he actually listened to but the anger, smugness & bitterness in him sounds to me like a jilted ex-boyfriend “I NEVER LOVED HER ANYWAY!” There’s something more going on here with him.
I absolutely had to talk about the Finn situation going around right now and provide my own perspective/opinions about it. What're your thoughts on all of this?!

Funny how Italian food is incredibly simple and easy to make and people act so impressed when you can make your own sauces and pasta
You're being kind. He's the French only food critic.
He was a 90s hardcore kid. It's not shocking that he really didnt like nu metal and was only talking about most of the awful bands he covered for the money. Stuff like Earth Crisis or Snapcase wouldn't get the same views as a Korn video
He even hates punk
@@CNYKnifeNut Of coarse, the food critic from Ratatouille.
It's coming from a guy who calls himself Punk Rock MBA yet hates Fugazi.
AND that's when I stop watching his videos completely! And that was back in 2021, that's when I knew he was a poser lol
I definitely got that vibe from him too, thinking of his pop-punk video in particular
He purely only cares about money and judges success solely on the profitability of an enterprise.
Luckily persons like me are the opposite and use the tube for some kind of conservation of old and / or rare music. Hundreds of my uploaded punk / metal songs would be never been heard by anyone if i wouldn't had uplaoded them or if they would get deleted.

This is why Finn complained about gatekeepers and elitists, because we see people like Finn and we knew he is full of shit.

He obviously liked punk and hardcore, and then pretended to like other genres for the cash.

The basics are the same for everyone:
He could have just kept the second channel and done reaction content to keep the money flowing... but no he had to go scorched earth...
I always found it funny that someone who branded themselves as punk would take sponsorships or corporate ad rev
I mean, it's literally in his name haha. he alwayssss hyperfocused on that!

Just don't ask him how old his wife was when they met.
literally lol.

That was his marketing angle.
I didn't really like his main channel but his live channel was a mainstay in my rotation. Also love your channel
Can't say I tuned in too much to that! And thank you so much, glad to hear you enjoy it and so happy to have you here! :D

Absolutely, that makes a ton of sense. Honestly wasn't aware of that but it tracks. He painted himself into a corner big time, unfortunately

Somebody name dropping something you like shouldn't make you automatically like that person, lol...
@ the vibe i get from his newer videos is “FINE! I’LL Do it but I’m ONLY Doing It!! To pay rent this mouth”
There were people who called this years ago. I didn't necessarily buy it. But looking back. It all makes sense now.
Definitely showed that the people who abuse it or don't enjoy it will always have some sort of judgment on them, tbf.
Another stupid hipster, hated gatekeeping but acted like his opinion was the be all end all
Like that rancid is the only true ska punk band
exactly--he contradicted himself more often than i think he even realizes
Well… I married my first husband and we had a 16 year age gap. Started dating him when I was 20 and we married when I was 23.
Those sorts of things aren't too bad, imo. I've been in age gap relationships similar, haha. i don't think most people care mucha bout those :]
You married a 7-year-old boy?!!
36 yo going after a 20 yo...? Yeah, thats not creepy at all
@idiot_city5444 not really, being 20 years old isn’t a child, it would actually be creepy if a 40 year old was into 16 year olds
I always hated how whenever he would talk about or describe a band he always makes up sexual scenarios and use them as analogies which was disgusting as expected.
lord I completely forgot about this shit lmao
9:11 "I never had many stakes in him to begin with", in a video about Finn McKenty sucking his fans dry... this can't be a coincidence
hindsight being 20/20 his demeanor with how he talked about things makes way more sense now. also, about your point with him being stuck in the past and not providing much about new bands and comparing them to old bands, it probably all came down to there being more to research and say about old bands via Google and Wikipedia etc.
I guess I feel a weird sense of redemption because I always found the guy super arrogant and judgemental. The thing that actually pisses me off the most was that it was all a cynical grift, and it worked.
I couldn't agree more. Very arrogant guy. Mister know-it-all.
7:39 💯exactly. Just because it’s something is legal doesn’t make it icky.
Ex: Slavery and segregation was legal at one point
Couldn't stand him.
He incorrectly used a musical term on YT and I told him about it, and his response was, "You must be popular at parties."
It's under his Architects Animals video for all to see. All the spats we got in on his IG show how much of a petty loser he is.
Love the guy! Either talking about rock music, or being blunt about his business. Great sense of humor, too. His personal motivations don't concern me in the least.
Wait somebody who claimed to like punk rock was inAuthentic? OMG! THAT'S NOT BEEN A CLICHE OF THE SCENE SINCE BEFORE IT STARTED!
LOL
Yeah nah theres just no coming back from that in my books.
the vkei video was so weird. why couldn't he just admit he misunderstood a genre?
I have no idea what any of this is about but I looked into his channel just now and I've only seen two videos of his a while back, one about Mr Bungle and one about Primus. These were watched along with other channels' videos about the same bands when I was curious about them. I don't have anything to say about the guy or his channel because I don't remember but I can say the thumbnails he used and the titles of the videos were definitely a turn off.
started watching the PRMBA off an on around 4 years ago. i always totally loved his videoes back then OR i was like "This guy just relentlessly hates ska? why does he think i should hate it, too?" i didn't watch him at all for about a year but started watching again when i found his 2nd channel which was...self-titled, for lack of a better way of putting it? either way, i liked more of his content on that channel and that was when i became a paid Twitch sub to him for about 6 months. never missed a stream unless i was at work and i enjoyed the Twitch streams, mostly talking to other people in the chat about our mutual love for emo, punk, metal, and ska. met a lot of cool people on those streams. he would ask us for audience requests pretty often but any time i asked him to play a new song from metal bands i like, he would spend 20 or 30 seconds telling me directly about why he wasn't going to review a metal vid and would then say "Okay...anyone want me to react to a new song that is NOT METAL?" ....i mean i was paying this dude to talk and he would just crap all over my recommendations and requests. i stuck with it, chalking it up to "that's just his personality" and i thought he was just a troll but a funny and entertaining one. after seeing that recent interview, i wish i could get my money back. i only lost maybe $50 to him all said and done but i could have bought a new video game or ordered a few delicious pizzas with that money. the fact that he is completely ungrateful for all the interactions he had with his fans and the money he received from us has put a bad taste in my mouth. it's a bummer. i went and found some OLD vids of him from when he was going under the monicker "Sargent D" and you can tell that he actually, really DID enjoy music. namely hardcore, punk, and metal. sucks that he became such a grifter over time. honestly, i think he's depressed and i feel bad for him but i'm also gonna be more careful about who i pay for subs to. at the end of the day, i'm just a little let-down. it's like losing a friend. it sucks! thanks for reading my SUPER long comment if you made it this far. good vid.
It would appear that Ken Tamplin has just missed out on the "Music Villain of 2024" award.
Been hearing a whole lotta shit about him lately, holy shit.
Yeah it's fucking bad unfortunately lmao. just really sad
It is what it is. But one good thing is that I was introduced to King 810 through his "Most Hated Bands" series.
@@RazorSaysRawr LMAO, you got that going for you, for sure!
Honestly I'm happy he's gone. I can't stand creatives who only do it for the money. Nothing wrong with wanting to make money from your creative pursuits, but you gotta do it cause you love it...that's what will keep you going. Finn never had that.
for sure! the rope will get thin or you'll just be miserable doing it so, pick that poison. Passion reigns supreme
McCunty has always been trash
McKenty is the Shartimus of music. Manipulating his fake fandom to make money. All the while hating his own fan base.
Honestly, I never understood how he achieved the level of popularity he received. Literally none of his videos added any value. He talked a lot about bands and songs and musicians, but it was painfully clear that he really didn't know anything about _music._
You mention the "smug arrogance" that he had, and that was something that turned me off, too.
I've said this man is a "poser" for years, glad to have him gone.
We all got called poser by a guy who doesn't even like music
Literally LMAO
He liked music and he still does, he made videos he liked and people down voted them, it hurt his ego. So now he says he never liked music, it’s like when Charlie from Willy wonka didn’t get a gold ticket in his chocolate bar and said it would have probably make the chocolate taste bad.
I think it was the fact that he read too much of the comments that it made him bitter not liking what he made
Honestly, that's valid lmao. at the end of the day if you have thin skin or are sensitive to criticism overtime, it'll weigh on you.
End of the day he got his dubloons.
yup! never liked people that'll criticize things to high heavens and then get pissed the second it's back lmao
LMFAOO, good on you!
Good riddance to that lame. I knew he was a reactionary and a poseur from day one.
