Tariffs during the first Trump administration caused major issues for steel purchases with my local family-owned hardware store (competitor to big names). The existing steel vendors had to move to US steel, which did not have the supply to meet demand. Many of the customers complained that they couldn't finish their projects when steel was unavailable, and that the prices had jumped way too much. Ironically, the major customers were people who wanted him to do this.
Did they learn? Like, we can laugh at people fucking around and finding out all we want, but they have to actually put cause and effect together for that to actually make things better in the future.

That's all well and good, but the anti-trans amendment to the NDAA hits too close to home for me. No, I'm not a trans youth of a service member, but it is the wedge in the door that will let the next congress say "Even the Dems voted for blocking it for youth. Tariffs during the first Trump administration caused major issues for steel purchases with my local family-owned hardware store (competitor to big names). The existing steel vendors had to move to US steel, which did not have the supply to meet demand.
Many of the customers complained that they couldn't finish their projects when steel was unavailable, and that the prices had jumped way too much.
Ironically, the major customers were people who wanted him to do this.
Did they learn? Like, we can laugh at people fucking around and finding out all we want, but they have to actually put cause and effect together for that to actually make things better in the future.

We had notice before St. Helens blew. No doubt those of us who prepare and pay attention will have sufficient warning before Rainier blows too.
While I don't live out that way, I've been in eyeshot of (and actually on) Rainier before - it's gorgeous out there, and Rainier was so friggen humongous even from SeaTac that it almost felt unreal. Again, I've never spent more than maybe a month in its sightline, maybe that feeling changes with more time.
Unfortunately, I don't have anywhere near the same 'unreal' feeling re next few years, and that's the part that causes me genuine fear.

Democrats should stand up for trans rights, climate change, etc when it comes up.
But if they have the opportunity to protect MAGA folks from their own stupidity... hell no.
They should. However, I do believe the GOP will keep throwing around a Sophie's Choice dilemma at the other party, this time around. With so many powers under their control, they'll do some pretty mean stuff when a budget is on the line. They'll likely take it to the line where the decision is to save one of those, but at the cost of the entire shutdown to happen, the economy to fall, and everybody suffers quite quickly. It would be pretty bad.
Now maybe, the clear thing is in order to protect that, to allow the GOP to do the awful thing, have a bunch of us out of work (I'll likely be part of the people not receiving a paycheck, just that quickly) And note that they'd have to do an immense amount of work and cheating to not get completely decimated in the Midterms. That's all well and good, but the anti-trans amendment to the NDAA hits too close to home for me. No, I'm not a trans youth of a service member, but it is the wedge in the door that will let the next congress say "Even the Dems voted for blocking it for youth. We need to block trans healthcare for everyone."
My parents are servicemembers. I'm trans. My representative voted for this. This isn't strategy, it's betrayal.

At this point I've lost all faith in the Dems and their support of trans people. They have left us out to dry to many times and I fully believe if they felt they could dump trans people from the national platform, Dems would have already thrown us in the river before the ink was dry.
The Democratic Party legitimized Republican bigotry and propaganda with this choice. The decision not only to vote in favor of a transphobic bill, but to actively prevent any attempts to demand the transphobic verbiage be removed from the bill, sent a clear message to both Republican fascists and Democratic voters: “we’re willing to be collaborators.”

I understand this, but at the same time the folks in Washington won't be the ones suffering under these disastrous policies. As a disabled person dependent on Social Security who also lives in a red state, I'm genuinely terrified of the economic uncertainty going forward. I hate that some many ignorant people decided they were informed enough to vote and decided to vote for a candidate solele because he was screaming the loudest and validated their hateful beliefs. I hate this entire situation, I just hope the Democrats take the right lesson from this and build the party back stronger and quit pushing further to the right, it won't help them any to do so. The old guard needs to retire and leave the younger people to take up the mantle and fix their mistakes.
I'm sorry that you didn't vote for this and you will suffer more than those in Congress. Let's be honest though, the Dems are just the other side of the same coin, the majority are bought and sold too. We need REAL Progressive politicians and policies. People who don't take money from corporations is the only way out of this - money out of politics is the only way.

Yeah, I just wish we were acknowledged more in these hopeful speeches. We're likely the first to be ended from these policies so the whole "we'll be fine and get through like we always have" just feels tone deaf. SO many people will not make it through, just as SO many people did not make it through all those other times.

Im on SSI, Food Stamps, Medicaid, HEAP, STAR, I had a fairly nice old age ahead with Harris, I'll be one of the pieces they pick up after trump is done with me. "They've made worm's meat of me!" (Mercutio). Drafting a letter to my reps, big whoop. I'm in a blue state, but they cant support me without federal money, too.
Nothing the Dems can build that could stop 77 million people from being dedicated to being stupid.

I know what you mean but, as Belle said, more Dems push back, the more Trump will cast them as "the problem" and make everything that goes wrong their fault. He'll do that anyway, but it will be a little harder to sell if they can say "What? What did we do?"
