Should you join the ArtStation Challenge?

- I totally understand if you completely disagree, lord knows I was on the fence for a long time. Just please remember that it doesn't make you an enemy to me or any artist that still uses ArtStation.
My biggest worry driving this decision is that artists are possibly harming their own career prospects. Since AS remains the biggest platform, real artists leaving the site seems to give AI a larger voice as it fills in the gaps. It hurts to see AI performing better on AS than great art posted to Artgram or Cara.
Anyway, it never feels like I've said enough to properly cover a topic with so much nuance, but really I just want to encourage artists to focus on what they enjoy.
Perhaps the real reason I accepted the position is for the catharsis of disqualifying AI entries, but I like to think I'm a little less spiteful than that.
Another important note is that I'm only paid to host for ArtStation. This video is completely separate.
I'm still pretty snowed under with work and this video took a loooong time to edit, but I'm gonna do my best to share a bit more going forward.

thanks, but yeah I largely agree. Problem is I don't see viable alternatives appearing yet. And you're right about AI entries, unfortunately that is gonna be standard for all competitions from now on :/
Sorry but no. I am not gonna try to create something that "AI can not do" just to teach it how to do that. Would be another story if I knew that Artstation protects artists instead of allowing "Trending on Artstation" prop.

@@tck7422 Unfortunatelly you are right. But Artstation seems to be the worst since "Trending on Artstation" is one of the most popular props. Having portfolio on any other platform seems more safe, especially when you combine it with Glaze (AI protection filter)
I deleted my own comment because it had misinformation and it represented rumors as facts. My comment was saying that Artstation was selling training data to Midjourney but the facts are that the founder of Midjourney implied that they have made/were about to make a deal with Artstation about the same thing.

Very well put together video! I believe the core message is useful for most artists to hear. We make art because we can and we love doing it.
It's an uncomfortable and even conflicting atmosphere for artists these days, but the reality is what it is. It's up to the individual to make the decisions that they believe is best for them, and having a "glass half full" as you said is a better mindset to have in the long run.

The video is very well put together; smart, stylish, and funny, like everything you make.
I see where you are coming from and it seems to me that you're being honest and trying to present a complex situation in as fair a way as you can. I agree that, as a working artist, it's certainly easier to shrug off Artstation than if I were looking for work and that these types of contests are outstanding opportunities for up-and-coming artists.
However, when esteemed professionals like yourself join an AS initiative, no matter how intelligently and entertainingly presented your protestations might be, you're still tacitly siding with and supporting a company which has shown itself to be an enemy and exploiter of working artists. I understand you're not making heaps of moolah from this and you do come across as genuinely conflicted, but whether you intend to or not, you are indeed propping AS up as a respectable and valid platform for artists.
People with your visibility should not be participating in this contest in any capacity-if every influential artist cooperated to reject AS and champion its competitors, then AS wouldn't feel so confident in bullying and robbing the artists from whom it already profits immensely.
I really appreciate your thoughts. I agree that somehow getting everyone with a large reach together to enact group action might be a solution, but (not to get too doomer) it feels like we had that chance, and it didn't really result in much. The front page got completely filled with anti AI, plenty of big artists left, but the site remained the biggest for industry artwork. I'm now looking at a situation where our dream didn't come true, and I want artists to make the best of what they have.
I'm also still very open to change my mind. I'll definitely be seeing this challenge through and doing my best to help contestants, but who knows what the future holds.

First I appreciate the amount of thought and care you put into discussing a topic with this much nuance, as well as the editing too, super charming. The one criticism, the only criticism, that I can make is you didn't mention any ways for artists who are entering the competition to protect their work from being scrapped.
It might be a bit late to suggest this, maybe it can be included as sidenote in a next video, but Glaze, the image cloaking program, was recently updated and now it even has a web version, and although it's not a permanent solution it's one of the best ways artists currently have of protecting their work while still showing it. Just thought it would be wise to share that here.
Regardless Tck, thank you for making this, and I'm optimistic as well.
You were inspired by artists, and now you are the inspiration, that's a legacy that never end and that push all artist to be better and better. It's wonderful to see that, thanks for your work and for your dedication!

this is just my pov but I personally think its best to sway the art community to a new website/ new beginning.
For me its less about being intimidated by a/i art and more about how artstation handled the situation
With recent screenshots, it seems they were taking bribes to train users work without their agreement. I rather try to start fresh than to hang onto something that doesnt deserve my trust.
totally understand. I don't regret this decision, but I'm definitely feeling like I need to give the same sort of attention to Art competitions that I can fully get behind.

@@tck7422 I've met some amazing artists / mentors through Artstation, without them I wouldn't have discovered your work for example.
But seeing how things recently played out makes me extremely sad. When the future was very uncertain for artists, I expected
Artstation of all websites to back their creators, but they did the complete opposite.
I'm still hopeful things will take a turn for the better and that we'll find a new place, that we can call home as illustrators.💗

I've definitely been frustrated by the repetitive sexy anime clones on the front page for a while (however well-rendered), but I never knew I could reject the algorithm and look through the likes of my favorite artists! Thanks for the tip, and great video!
Do you think "show your work" would be a valuable requirement in order to sift out the AI junk?
Thank you! I love browsing artist's likes; you start to see the connections between what they like to see and what they like to make.
And yeah the rules require showing your process, but we can also tell from the images themselves.

Well honestly it'd be the same core message as Rich's (though now, I'd rather it wasn't ArtStation-centric).
There is a lot of merit to the 10000 hour rule. My added suggestion is to be very explicit with the style you're aiming for with every piece of art. Find a reference piece that inspires you and do everything you can to match it's quality!
