    Wow! This is the best comparative review I've watched for a multi-port USB hub. Absolutely superb port-by-port spec comparison. I was especially impressed with your comparison of how many amps (e.g., 1.5 amps versus 0.9 amps) the USB-C and USB-A ports provide for charging peripherals (i.e., smart phones, smart watches, ear-buds, etc.). You even nuanced that the higher and lower amps merely translates into how fast/slow you want your devices to charge, faster per higher amps or slower per lower amps. I found it frustrating that 99.% of the 50 reviews I watched on multi-port hubs didn't include this port-by-port spec/nuance comparison like yourself. One had to infer this data or do voluminous cross-referencing of spec sheets. So thank you so much for doing this!
    My consumer question is, does the TB3 computer port on the OCW and CD-TSC also connect to and power a non-TB3 laptop? My partner's new Dell has a USB-C TB3 port with the TB-symbol. But my MSI laptop USB C port is confusing: "USB 3.0/ 3.1 Port (Type C) (optional)
    ; USB 3.0/ 3.1, the SuperSpeed(+) USB, delivers the higher interface speeds for connecting various devices, such as storage devices, hard drives, or video cameras, and offers more advantages over high-speed data transferring. The slim and sleek USB Type C connector features reversible plug orientation and cable direction, and supports scalable performance to future-proof solution, including USB 3.x, DisplayPort, PCIe, Audio, and optionally supported Thunderbolt 3."
    This spec sounds like my MSI laptop USB-C port is a USB-C Gen 2 10Gb/s (backward Gen 1 5Gb/s compatible) port, not an authentic TB3 port. Am I wrong? If not, then either the OWC or CD-TS3 would serve my purpose, the latter because of its smaller foot-print but also the OCW because it has a mini-DisplayPort. I read the m-DP is better than a HDMI for a 144Hz monitor?
    What say you sir? And bravo on your comparison review. Thank you so much for making it!

      I'm pretty sure the device is expecting a TB3 connection to the host computer, which it then can split out into all of those other connections. I don't think it is designed for USB. There are similar hubs that can do this with USB 3 so if that's what you need check out those. I think both OWC and CalDigit make USB 3 hubs.

    Thanks! Great job. I did notice a few things. You said that the 3.1 Gen 2 port on the front of the OWC was 8bg/s but the 3.1 Gen two on the back of the ClDigit is 10 bg/s a sec. Why would they be different? Also, you said the CalDigit counts the second audio port to get 15 ports. That's incorrect. It counts the extra USB-c port to get 15. My only other comment is that I think the OWC with experience better cooling due to heat transfer because of it's slimmer design. Also, the heat sink design of the CalDigit box could offset that advantage.

There is no need for any kind of a dock, it can easily handle 3 displays as well as a multitude of other ThunderBolt 2 compatible devices. The OWC Dock is a ThunderBolt 3 dock, not even sure there is a way to really connect it and use it with the MacPro which doesn’t have ThunderBolt 3.

I’m thinking of getting the caldigit to attach to my macbook pro 16”, while also connecting the laptop to my razer core X egpu. Right now the egpu is charging the laptop since it’s capable of 100W charging, but since the caldigit is only capable until 87W so I guess the egpu will take charge of charging when connected to both? I think the extra Thunderbolt 3 port is more significant than the microSD port. There is also a lower-priced hub available from CalDigit.

    • @cwaynefox
      @cwaynefox  4 роки тому

      I assume you meant extra USB C port. It doesn't give you an extra TB port, you have one that has to be used to connect to your Mac, and then you get one on the dock. So you lose one from the Mac to make the connection, and you get it back on the doc. However, it does give you an extra USB-C 3.1 connection so you connect 2 USB C devices without losing the thunderbolt port. So it depends on your needs. Some don't use any USB C devices, but with high capacity USB C SSD's showing up cheap, they will get more popular so that extra port might be handy.. I thought I would use the micro SD slot a lot because my audio recorders use those, but I usually just plug a cable into them and copy them straight out of the device.

    Thanks for this Wayne. I’m about to get the new 16 inch MacBook Pro. I was going to just get the OWC dock. But now I am going to seriously consider the Caldigit .
    My current set up is a trashcan Mac pro desktop, with two OWC Thunderbay 4 boxes attached. One is the older thunderbolt 2-Raid that is used for archiving and backups. The other is the newer thunderbolt 3 -Thunderbay 4- that I use with a T3 to T3 adapter.
    My display is an older NEC PA271 connected with the mini display port to thunderbolt cable.
    Can you think of a way that I would be able to keep my Mac Pro in play and be able to share the display so when I plug the laptop into the dock I can use it with my 27 inch display And when the laptop is not plugged then I can still use the old Mac Pro.?
    I shoot more stills than video and would like to still be able to use the desktop MP for a lot of my Lightroom & Photoshop work so my laptop doesn’t have to stay tied to the desk when I’m home ,unless I’m doing video or things that need the newer software.
    The display only has one mini display port and 2 DVI ports which will not give me full resolution.
    Appreciate your insight if you have any.
    Also trying to figure out how I can share data from the new laptop to offload new jobs and do backups into my existing set up without totally disconnecting the Mac Pro
    I also realize that I may have to just use the laptop as my main machine going forward.

    • @cwaynefox
      @cwaynefox  4 роки тому

      The PA 271 manual shows that it works like my PA 301w, and should have two displayport inputs on the bottom and you can switch between them with the front buttons.. You can even use a USB keyboard and mouse to the display and when switching between computers it will also switch the keyboard and mouse. I do this occasionally with a MacMini that I use for various projects that require an older version of MacOS. This will only handle switching the displays, you can’t have a system where you dynamically switch the entire ThunderBolt chain. That’s why I finally gave up on my 2013 Mac Pro, it was slower than my 2019 MacBook Pro anyway, so it was easier just to use it as my main computer. I pretty much just work at my desk at home, I live alone and don’t really need to sit in another room and work on just the laptop.

    Hi Wayne, Excellent video, but there are some things that are factually incorrect. The 12 Port OWC charges at 60 watts to the host, and not the 85 watts of the TS3 Plus. Although the website does not provide the voltage of the USB Type-A ports on the TS3 Plus their support team advised that it was indeed, 1.5. Which, is identical to both the 12 and 14 Port OWC Dock.

    • @cwaynefox
      @cwaynefox  5 років тому

      Thanks for the clarification, the 12 port specs aren’t listed in the manual or on OWC’s website so I sort of assumed it was the same as the 14 port which does provide 85 watts. As far as the USB ports on the CalDigit, that’s good news that they supply 1.5 watts of power, although some printed verification would be nice. Seems it would be worthwhile for this information to be added to the marketing material. I know the CalDigit doesn’t seem to charge my iPhone as fast as the OWC, so if that’s true not sure what’s up with that. Not really a big deal, don’t think anyone would be basing a decision on the ability to charge a device, although it might make it easier to hook up an external DVD writer.

      @@cwaynefox You're absolutely right about the printed verification for CalDigit, since this is something they can ameliorate right away. @@cwaynefox Yes, but are driven through CalDigit's TS3 Plus. DisplayPort 1.2, and I use the downstream Thunderbolt 3 port as the second display. When you're working with high resolution and high frame rates is when you can see the difference between the the 200+ and the 300 docks. We've tested Cable Matters, Pluggable, Elgato, and others do not have the consistency as CalDigit. They may be great for lower resolutions, but at 4K CalDigit has been the clear winner. There were some hiccups with the Active Display for downstream Thunderbolt 3, but nothing a $10 adapter didn't solve. SPDIF also came in handy when we needed to plug in a receiver. COMPARE CalDigit Element TBT4 Thunderbolt 4 Hub

    • @cwaynefox
      @cwaynefox  3 роки тому

      There is a big difference between the new "hubs" from OWC and CalDigit and these "docks". A dock adds additional ports to your computer, such as audio, video, SD card, HDMI or DisplayPort , USB, etc. What it doesn't add are more ThunderBolt ports. These hubs are focused on adding Thunderbolt ports, typical you gain 2 additional ThunderBolt ports. Thunderbolt 3 / 4 ports also handle USB 3 / 4 as well. These are great for a device like the M1 MacBook Pro, which only has 2 onboard ThunderBolt ports. The down side is you lose a few of the features of the docks, such as SD card slot, audio, HDMI or display port video. The docks are more versatile, but you can always use one of the added TB ports or one of the USB-A ports for most of those functions. I may buy one to review, not sure, as the dock serves my needs better than the hubs.
