Just received Sonnet Solo 10G Thunderbolt 3 to 10Gb Base-T Ethernet Adapter and it works out of the box with the OWC Hub giving my M1 MacBook Pro a 10Gb network connection.
Nice
I just brought the CalDigit TS3 dock for my MacBook Pro. Can’t wait to test it out
That looks great as well
I’ve got one and it works great.
5 ports. Of the 4 USB-C ports, one connects to the computer, and one replaces the port on the computer that you are connecting to the OWC hub. Is it worth the money to add two whole USB-C ports (plus one USB-A port)?
The port for pc or laptop on the front of the OWC is for laptops obviously....To connect ...you don't wanna do that at the back every day and time.
great review . i really have to wonder what OWC was thinking , putting the computer port on the front . that alone would push me towards the Belkin hub .
Yes it is strange
Good review thanks. I'll be getting the 11 port OWC I think. Has everything I need and seems to have very good speeds.
Thanks
Nice one, thanks David. On a M1 Macbook Pro, can you connect 2 monitors using either of these two hubs? (DisplayLink?)
You need a display link adapter or hub for that.
Looks nice, I just got the Caldigit TS3 Plus, I did look at the OWC as well, however, the Caldigit has a Toslink port which I wanted so that was a deciding factor. I just tested my 5 year old Samsung T1 and I got 280 write and 340 read connected through the Caldigit. I have a T7 coming tomorrow. So with my new iMac arriving New Years eve, Christmas came late for me this year but it was worth the wait!
How exciting
I have an OWC Thunderbolt 3 Dock that works fine but from my research the Caldigits are more reliable and consistent.
A question regarding the OWC Thunderbolt hub: Does it ABSOLUTELY HAVE to be connected to the Mac Mini via the front TB port for the hub to function properly? I won't need the power delivery, so if I could use one of the ports on the back to connect to the Mini, that'd be ideal. Thank you!
It has to be the front
very clear review i am still not sure what hub to buy i think i opt for the Belkin since that is available right now and offers everything i really need for my daily routine and hobby ..
Thanks for watching
Great stuff as usual. Thanks for showing that the speeds were no better through the hub versus directly to the M1 mini. I was curious about this specifically, that maybe the USB 3.1 gen 2 speed would max out better on the hubs than the M1 mini. As you point out, even the T5 is plenty fast and it's not much to worry about in real usage. Waiting for my M1 mini and already have a T5 and T7 to use for editing. I don't think I'll need a hub for a while but still great to see your reviews of them!
Thanks
lol T5's/T7's and any Sandisk SSD's are slow as heck on M1 Macs. You need an external 40gb/s Thunderbolt 3 SSD enclosure with something like a Samsung 980 Evo Pro to get speed write and read speeds of over 1800 to 2000 mb/s.
for some reason, M1 Macbooks or Minis are not able to get full speed of USB 3.2. Your PC could get over 1000 MB/s from a T7, but your M1 Mac will only get like 550 mb/s to 700 mb/s.
Thanks for this! It’s interesting how my t7 ssd actually performs slightly better on the Owc thunderbolt dock better than my m1 MacBook Pro. The black magic test showed opposite results 😆 🤷♂️. Are you getting similar performance?
Mine is about the same with or without the hub.
I have the larger OWC. I like it, but the port to computer, on the front, makes little sense to me. Maybe the are trying to eliminate potential confusion with the other USB-C ports? I suppose this works well for laptop users. But, for my MacMini the cable sticking out up front going to the back of the MacMini is cumbersome and ugly.
Yes it is strange at the front

Problem with the M1 macs (I own one btw) is that none of the display (monitor) calibrators work. Nada. I had to manually match a photo on my monitor to the same on my iPhone (where most of my photos are viewed).
It will come soon
Spider calibrators works. they say on there web site when calibrating monitors for the time it will not display the name of the monitor and that is true but it Will calibrate
Hi, you just mentioned that you're using the pegasus 2, I just bought the Mac mini M1 and I'm not capable to discover the my Pegasus R4 with the original Apple Thunderbotl 3 to thunderbolt 2 dongle, would you please share how you managed to make your Pegasus work?
I got t thunderbolt 2 to 3 adaptor from apple and you need the latest driver for the Pegasus which is now m1 compatible
Should check out the Caldigit element hub, more ports for about the same money
Thanks
My Mac Mini comes Tuesday I need something but the one you just received is not available via the link you provided yet?
Correct, the first batch sold out and more will be shipping next month.
Yes you need to preorder
I want to connect my wife’s windows work laptop to our 2019 21 inch iMac but ..... they don’t have any thunderbolt connections just two lightning ones.... they say these models don’t have the display abilities like pre 2014 machines had. Will this then give us thunderbolt connection allowing window laptop to use iMac as bigger screen
I don’t think it would work it needs thunderbolt 4
Great video! Thank you!
You had me at, "Guhdday Everyone!"
Lol
Hi sir! I have the m1 Mac mini and using a usb 3.0 hub seems to interfere with my wireless mouse. Do you think this will have that same issue?
Yes it probably will
I only want to confirm dose it support two 4k 60hz display
I believe so.but not with the m1 macs.
Can you run multiple display with the own hub on the m1 MacBook Pro
No you can only run one extra the mini has hdmi as well so can run 2
You can run an extra monitor but you have to use an active (make sure that is active) DisplayPort adapter to connect the monitor and install the controller app. I had two monitors running off of a MacBook Air hooked up to a CalDigit hub. This is the one I used - www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01C6HBJOA/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o08_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
By chance have you got the 16gb mac mini or the 8 gb ?
The 16
@@DavidOastler Have you noticed any difference in swap file usage ?
Yes it’s used it less often
This said, there are more devices with Thunderbolt that may want to use these hubs than just M1 users. And there will be more and more over the years.
Look, I'm not opposed against Apple, but I like people to be inclusive: these are Thunderbolt hubs for devices with Thunderbolt.
And don't give me the: "this video is from almost two years ago" comment. A little foresight goes along way.
Nice
looks good..
If I had a dollar every time you said 'and things like that' ;)
NO DISPLAYLINK on BOTH - all these docks are trash
