    Because they are in a similar price range, I’ve been getting questions about how these two compare. One is more popular and the other has newer ports.
    Spoiler: It depends on what you use it for, but In most cases for most people, a thunderbolt 4 dock is more flexible and future proof. I’ll show you how to me, the ever reigning Caldigit TS3 Plus is no longer needed. When you can get a future proof dock for a similar price. There are pros and cons to both, but OWC’s thunderbolt dock wins in comparison. Of course this is my opinion from my personal use so it’s out there to consider.
    I’d be happy to keep the TS3 if you can convince me in the comments below.

    Thank you for comparing the two because other youtubers keep promoting Caldigit TS3 Plus like it’s the best. It has so many more legacy ports compared to the newer one.

      Well, it's actual use vs future proofing. My old laptop had a headphone jack that had an integrated optical out...on the front...cute but never used. Didn't even get a suitable toslink adapter before the whole thing got obsolete.
      I wasn't cloning hard drives while copying from cards. Didn't need ethernet access while copying files.
      There are nice usb A 3 ethernet adapters and sd readers, nice usb-c monitors or usb-c to displayport/HDMI adapters.
      I know those are clunky but so are these packs of 2 bricks and 3 wires.
      Barely anyone needs them, they helpn't very much, they are just gadgets that most of us really want to cry "well organized professional!"

    Can you please make a video about NVME m2 SSD via Thunderbolt 3-4 connections speed tests connected: 1) Right into MacBook Pro M1; 2) In MacBook Pro M1 through CalDigit TS3+; 3) In MacBook Pro M1 through OWC Thunderbolt Dock - I can't find any video with this test!)))

      So glad it helped out! 😊 It’s been working great so far. If anything I’ve been needing it less because of the ports of the laptop but I do like to keep my counter clean. Going to test multiple monitors and peripherals soon.

    Great comparison. It would have been useful to see the audio port tested. For example, is there any lag time, especially if recording over another track where sound has to align perfectly.

    • @robertquinonez_
      @robertquinonez_ 2 роки тому +1

      That was not a good comparison, two totally different hubs. It is like comparing a new sports car to an older mini van lol. A good comparison would have been the Thunderbolt 4 ELEMENT HUB by Caldigit.

    • @dushk0
      @dushk0 2 роки тому

      @@robertquinonez_ Yes but the comparison is in no way like that, this Caldigit still seems to be the better made one, just needs more TB out xD. OWC looking like a cheap subsidiary in comparison, better on paper but no better at all.
      If one needs a bunch of TB ports, Caldigit Element hub it is. Can plug a gig or 2.5 ethernet adapter and anything else. Also can use USB A to C plug adapters (the little guys that don't have to be removed), which should work for USB-C drives into A ports.
      I'd just buy a usb-c monitor and a usb A+C sd reader, apple av multiport for travel (or just a cheap spacegrey variety hub/dock for travel and SD card needs).
      Depends on what one needs, it's just that I don't see myself plugging SD cards at least 7 times a day, or hauling an RJ45 cable for travel.
      And finally, 4 thunderbolts on a hub are still gonna give 1 speed...USB 3 might be plenty enough, especially when transferring between 2 external drives back and forth across the 1 connection.

    I really hate that the computer cable is in the front of the OWC. Are you daisy chaining the two of them in your use case since you have both? I have a TS3 Plus but am considering getting the Caldigit Element hub and using it in conjunction with the TS3.

  • @robnowe5464
    @robnowe5464 2 роки тому +2

    Correction: The TS3+ actually charges at 87W (this was accomplished with a firmware update some time ago and any TS3+ you get now should already have that update) so the difference in charging wattage is 90 vs 87 or 3w or ~3.3%.

    Great video. Truly this is where PC's shine. It took me a while when deciding to buy a Mac mini. Coming from PC land, I had to decide on what I could do without. Even though I rarely used certain ports, having them there was always a bonus. I'm already looking at purchasing the Satechi USB-C hub. Apple users have had to deal with this for many years. In the past, Apple designed machines that were more like pc's, with many ports. That changed as Apple worked really hard to distinguish itself from Microsoft and PC manufacturers. It's no wonder so many people were excited to have more ports on the newest M1 laptops. LOL people might not need all the power of the M1 Pro or Max but they are really grateful to have a MacBook Pro with more ports! That is Apple listening to people. The dongle life is ridiculous. But hey, their quarterly profits are doing fine, so whatever they are doing, it's working.

    • @SupertechUSA
      @SupertechUSA  2 роки тому +1

      You can support two displays on the OWC with the new 2021 MacBook Pro (m1 pro or max) because it now supports that. Last year’s m1 did not.

    Besides the PC connection on the front on the OWC, it's dumb that they don't have a fast USB on the front. So you have to reach around the back to plug in a portable drive. Lame!

    The Ethernet speed test is a joke right? Why does someone has a symmetric connection without any knowledge how it works?
    1. You don't meassure WiFi just like you just did. If someone sits next to the router and it is a WiFi 6 router it would beat the shit out of your wired connection. Because it was just ~139 Mbit/s in your test while it seems like you have a bad symmetric 1 Gbit/s connection, I'm sure you are just in a 2.4 GHz Network, or to be more specific IEEE 802.11n, probably with some interferances and other devices active.
    2. Was the wired test with the same cable connected to the same switch/router port? Otherwise it's a useless result. How many other devices where active at this time?
    Next the disk speed tests: It is impossible by physics that a dock with shared connection is faster than directly attached storage as long as it is the same. So the "without Docks" test there has to be faster. Don't know what you messed up there but that result is just impossible.
    Looks like a bad CalDigit ad to me.

    • @JayOhFree
      @JayOhFree 2 роки тому +4

      For the sake of sounding ignorant, but aren't all these tests better because he's in a real world situation? Why would you test a WIFI connection without other devices or interference when you would have things connected on a daily basis? Same thing with ethernet. What would be the point in doing tests in a theoretical anechoic chamber where nothing can interfere when in actuality things are always interfering/devices are connected? The "without docks" test I can't defend though, the internal storage should have been faster.
