    This the only video for dock reviews where the youtuber was actually somebody I'd want to talk to. Thanks for the review. :)

    Ethernet is not working consistently on M1 mac. It does not get recognised on startup. Owc knows about it, but provides no fix for it and advertise the dock as fully compatible with M1 macs

    I was thinking about using this with a NAS for video editing because of the 10Gbe connection. 500MB/sec isn’t exactly screaming for that use. Wd you mind sharing some details about your NAS setup as to RAM and nvme cache?

    Another interesting video. Will look out for the next one, which hopefully will have 96W power for the 16" Macbook Pro and the CF Express slot - if we get that on the Canon EOS R5 :-)

    I have this dock, and it does have a list of issues. The fan is a big flaw: it is noisy. For editing video, audio, voice overs - this is extremely annoying. If I turn it off, the device gets hot. I think the main reason to buy this dock is to use the 10GbE network connection, and edit media files directly on a NAS. Which is kind of very hindered with the fan. And there are some other issues, like it needs a driver for the LAN card on Windows, USB devices connect and disconnet, the dock needs repeated plug-unplug to make the devices turn on, keyboard and mouse erratic depending on which port they are connected... My feeling they wanted too much to cram into this doc, and it couldn't really handle all of it.

      Just curious: are using the dock in a Windows environment? I saw another complaint about the Windows driver elsewhere.

    I just got the OWC TB 3 - 14 port. everything works but the 2nd TB port won't connect to my G-Drive which is a deal breaker. It connects like 1/20 attempts. Do you suspect this upgrade may be compatible with more devices across the board? I have the G-Raid TB 3 desktop drive. Thank you! great video!

    Also you mentioned at end about seeing how it holds up. It's now been 6 months since you posted vid, how has it held up? Lastly, I'm looking for dock for Samsung notebook 9 pro not macbook. It has thunderbolt3, do you see any reason why this wouldn't be a good dock for that? I noticed most people relate these to macbooks. Thanks, you're very informative!!

      It’s been fine and I haven’t had any problems with it. I’ve ran it in silent mode the entire time and while it’s a little warm with no fan it’s working just fine for me. There are a couple other alternatives if you don’t need 10 gigabit Ethernet. OWC makes another model and I believe caldigit also has one with just regular gigabit.

    Can someone tell me why nobody makes a dock with more than 2 Thunderbolt 3 ports? They all only have 2 ports, and one of those is to connect to the computer, so there's only one left. Who needs more USB 2 or 3 ports? Or LAN? Why doesn't someone make a Thunderbolt 3 dock with 4or 5 ports like they make multiple USB port docks? Thanks in advance for your help!

    • @jeffw991

      Thunderbolt 3 does not support "hub" architecture, which is necessary for multiple (>2) ports on one device. Everything is point-to-point, which is why Thunderbolt devices are always daisy-chained. In theory, every Thunderbolt 3 device should have two ports, one in and one out.
      In practice, much of what gets plugged into Thunderbolt 3 ports is USB Type C, which doesn't support daisy chaining, or Thunderbolt 3 devices that consume power. A Thunderbolt 3 device that consumes power must always be at the end of the line; they only have one port to guarantee that's the case.
      So it is indeed a heck of a bummer.
      Thunderbolt 4 (finally!) supports multi-port hubs, and OWC already makes such a hub, if you happen to have a Thunderbolt 4 host device to use it with. (Hint: you do not.*)
      *As of today. Maybe future readers will. But even the new M1 Macs which were widely reported to have it only have USB 4, which is compatible with Thunderbolt 3, not Thunderbolt 4. Because that makes good logical sense and is not in any way confusing! (/sarcasm)

    Hey dude, great video. Just one question, I'm in the market for a dock like this but I'm worried that it'll ruin my laptop battery having power plugged into it all day everday. Is it fine to have it plugged in all the time? For reference, I have the surface laptop 3.

    • @Kushari
      @Kushari 4 роки тому

      You'd want to keep the battery between 20-80%. Might be a bit of a chore, but will keep the longevity of the battery. Now if you do charge it up to 100%, just drain it a bit without leaving it to rest at 90-100%. It's OK to let the charge build up, but don't leave it for long periods of time too empty (20% or lower) or too full (90-100%).

    我买过这个Dock性能不好,万兆瓶颈有点大。这个玩意发热也挺大。雷电三盛行,但是通过雷电扩展显示器,再同时扩展各类数据接口就会因为剩余带宽量小,而受到严重影响。这个扩展坞上市很长时间,因为销量不佳,只好售价提高很多。买过这个扩展坞就知道这个不是一个新产品,因为电源接口都不常规,虽然这不代表什么。电子产品遵循买新不买旧,买旧除非性价比极高,像矿渣NAS之类的

    Great video. I have a HP Omen 17" laptop with one Thunderbolt 3 connection. I wonder if I connect this unit to my laptop TH3 would my Professional Audio interface from Universal Audio with Thunderbolt 3 work once I plug into this unit. You mentioned different wattage for each port. I am not sure if this plays a role in operation of the Audio interface?

    I have an 2014 apple 27 iMac with a Thunderbolt 2 Port - I have a Crucial X8 portable SSD which enable speeds up to 1050 MB/s --- Can I insert into the Dock and then output into my Thunderbolt 2 port on my Mac without loss of transfer speed?

    • @SuprUsrStan
      @SuprUsrStan  4 роки тому

      The specs claim that the USB ports are 3.1 gen 1. The crucial x8 appears to be a usb 3.1 gen 2 product. 5gbps be 10gbps. You would be capped at a theoretical 625mb/s on usb3.1 gen 1.
