  • As technology evolves rapidly, the European Union finds itself at the forefront of shaping regulations to govern artificial intelligence (AI) and its impact on society. Dragos Tudorache, a key EU legislator on the recently adopted AI Act, believes Europe's AI journey is just beginning.
Watch a video where he explains what is next, the achievements of this term, and what to expect from the new European Parliament after the European elections in June.
"The EU must now prepare for the implementation phase, which involves establishing an EU office to handle powerful AI models and national authorities to manage day-to-day applications. This process is not just about compliance but also about fostering interoperability and collaboration on a global scale," - he underlines. Tudorache adds that with emerging governance structures in the US, UK, and Japan, the EU's role in harmonizing systems and engaging with the scientific and industrial communities is of paramount importance.
He says that the mandate has been pivotal in addressing the evolving digital landscape, with regulations like the Digital Markets Act (DMA) and the Digital Services Act (DSA) aiming to bring order to the digital economy. Tudorache mentions the Data Governance Act and the Data Act and that they recognize the central role of data in AI-driven economies, setting guardrails to guide its responsible development.
"Implementing this body of law is the next crucial step, requiring coherent and harmonious execution to ensure its benefits reach both companies and citizens," - he says. According to the MEP, as technology increasingly influences economic and geopolitical dynamics, collaboration is urgently needed, particularly in areas like security and defense. However, this mandate coincides with significant political events, underscoring the challenge of maintaining a global outlook amidst potential isolationist tendencies.
Despite these challenges, Tudorache underscores the EU's duty to lead by example in regulating and developing technology. By embracing an outward-looking approach and assuming a prominent role on the world stage, the EU can positively shape the future of technology and society.
"As we embark on this journey, it is clear that the next mandate holds immense importance. It is not just about implementing rules but also about shaping the trajectory of technology and its impact on humanity" - he predicts. Tudorache says that with careful navigation and collective effort, the EU can chart a course toward a future where technology catalyzes growth and progress.
He believes that the EU stands at a pivotal juncture, poised to shape the future of AI regulation and innovation. The right vision and determination can pave the way for a digital future that benefits all.
