In this video I discuss these important but not often talked about anchoring concepts.
Mantus sent me their swivel and their chain hook.
Update: I really like their hook but it simply won't fit over my roller so I'll be using another one. I do really like their swivel and it will be installed on Temptress

10 years ago while cruising down the east coast I lost my ground tackle on a submerged wreck I didn’t know was there. Stuck in an expensive marina I called Mantus to order a new anchor and explained my situation hoping to get it shipped quick. They had already closed up the shop and were on the road driving headed to a boat show for the weekend. They turned around and drove back to the shop to get a anchor shipped out to me. Mantus does have really good gear that they spend alot of time and money designing but because they went out of their way to help me out there will never be anything but Mantus ground tackle on any of my boats!
As always great information. I read other people’s comments and I would point out Clark has made videos on about everything on a sailboat. Lithium really is new tech vital to cruising today. Thinking out of the box using 30yrs of experience is why I watch and love this channel. Real world applications in a practical way to understand.

Just had my swivel break on me. Setup is a 40kg Rocna with 12mm chain and now a simple 12mm shackle. No more swivel for us. Luckily we were able to recover the anchor, but its the second swivel we saw break in one yesr. First from a pontoon neighbour, and now ours.... the less moving parts the better in my opinion.

I don't understand the use of swivels for this application.
If just anchoring for a short period, surly the chain is quite capable of absorbing a few rotations?
Why would one wish to incorporate more points of failure? And the galvanic corrosion of stainless steel vs galvanized chain.
I bet it wasn't a Mantus.
If you turn the Teflon roll around you can get way better tension on what you are wrapping. Probably don't need tension in that application, but it is a game changer on threads.
Well timed Clark. I inherited a Plough when I bought the boat last Autumn (Fall to you) with a very heavily corraded shackle (instantly replaced!), a 3.5m chain and some good anchor plat rope (not secured at the bitter end!). I need much more chain and I do not trust a plough.
btw, what you called a cotter pin I know as a split pin, a cotter being solid.
I have a 30lb Mantus Anchor for my 30 ft. boat. It is the size recommended for my boat by Mantus. Other UA-camrs have recommended a 50lb. Anchor, but it's just too expensive.
I also noticed Clark that you have a pair of port and starboard solar panels on your bow. This is a very cool way to save space on deck.
There is a UA-camr Sailing Tritea who is sailing an Alberg 30 around the world who has a pair of panels outboard his cockpit. This saves space. I copied his idea and installed a pair of Renogy 200-watt rigid panels there. They flip from horizontal to vertical to get out of the way when we are sailing. The hardest part was finding the mounting hardware, which was only available. 2 places in the U.S.😮
If you look at old videos you will see I used to mount panels on the aft rails like you do. I did that for like 20 years before I built the arch.
The bow was a place for the aft panels when anchored to avoid shadow from the awning. After the arch I moved the old panels forward permanently, figuring if they fail they fail. Works... But I out more modern smaller panels up there now

The other thing about a snubber or bridal is that it lowers the point at which the chain is being pulled by the boat by wind or waves, thereby effectively increasing the apparent scope.
Not I'm my case as the two rollers are at the same level but if you mount it to the lower bob stay, yes absolutely
I love my Mantus anchors, swivels and chain claw! In my opinion, nothing better on the market. And to your point, I absolutely love that I can unbolt and detach the roll bar, as it allows me to fit them into a lazarette when not in use.
When will you be back in Luperon? I was interested a year or so ago (whenever it was, I don’t remember) when you put the video about a DC air con. I’d love to see it in person, as I don’t want to run my generator every night in order to use the AC Dometic unit.
They are for sale again through MarineDCAC.com. If you want to see one in Luperon ask Michael on Ollie or Brock as they both have one running. Besides it's better to get opinions from a guy not selling them.

I was hoping to see you anchor with the Mantus swivel. I bought along with my Mantus anchor, and as you show, it's an impressive piece of engineering. Unfortunately, I've had to put it back into the box because it is too wide to fit over the roller - it won't squeeze between the forestay and the outside cheek of the roller. So I am currently using a Korg swivel, but will upgrade when I can afford to replace my roller. Shame.
Yes the mantus chain hook was too wide for my roller (as I reported in the description). I'll be using another one.
We love our Rocna we use the mantis swivel though and we love how that works with our anchor. The only thing I don’t like about is the seizing wire needs replacing every 6 months. I’d prefer cotter pin or some other way to secure it.
I understand from friends that the early ones didn't come with a pin. Maybe you could get a pin through Mantus?
We actually replaced our Rocna with the Mantus. Been very happy with the switch. The Rocna is good, but the Mantus has performed better, never fails to set even with very short scope. The Rocna failed to set a couple times. We have not tried the brand new Rocna.

Safety Wire pliers
Just getting into boating, and after much research went with the Mantus M1, that allows you to take it all apart and stow when not in use ( no windless on my RIB ). Coupled to 10’ of 5/16” stainless steel chain, followed by 100’ of 3/8” solid braided nylon ). Used all SS hardware with blue lock tight and SS security wire. Still trying to figure out a recover system for WHEN this anchor gets stuck. I’ve thought about the zip ties, but they too will fail at the wrong time. Perhaps a small floating anchor ball, attached to recovery hole on the anchor ?? Any feedback greatly appreciated 😁
Don't sweat the anchor getting stuck. Anchor in a good bottom and it just doesn't happen.
I have a 70 lb. Spade anchor on a 28' Cheoy Lee Offshore sloop. The backup is a 45 lb Spade. I'm in Miami, Florida and it's hurricane season.
Clark. Impressive swivel from Mantus. Besides your mention and its articulation ability. Would you incorporate it in your anchor system?

I'm anchored off the Miami Yacht Club, front line coastal. My location is not considered a hurricane hole, your's more so.

Hi Clark. I really like Mantus and Rocna Anchors tbh, and Im in line with your approval of Oversizing. As I have Said before though, I really worry that their Grip is too solid to Fsil, when those occasions crop up wher NOT Failing, will Capsize your boat and lose it ? The one Anchor That I know will Fail when Failure is needed - otherwise they are as good anchors as Mantus and Rocna in my honest Opinion - is the Also Suitably Oversized Genuine Lewmar Delta Anchor, which Ihave never had a problem setting. When myboatgot hit by an extremely Powerful Tornado, it pushing the Anchor out siceways, saved the Boat, whem water was almost flowing into the cockpit on the Port side. A Very Scary Moment . 🤔Bob. 😞❤

@@EmilyAndClark Normally I didn't either, but experiencing being in a really powerful Tornado Storm really drove it into me, that and Anchor refusing to Budge can be Really Bad News indeed, and I got lucky. Oversizing them does seem to make a very worthwhile difference though, especially on the end of all Chain. How's things in Luperon ? It's definitely on my Bucket List to Visit. Best Wishes. Make sure you put out more chain say six scope or more so you have little chance of the boat pulling it taunt

It was about time to move on from Lithium Batteries. Battery forensics, battery charging, battery values. I don't know if you realize just how much time and episodes you have devoted just to batteries. In a boating channel I think we would like more variety. There is a whole lot more to sailing than just batteries. I think your audience would appreciate you moving on to the other aspects of sailing and boating.

only extremely recently in my honest opinion due to the very newest BMS, and the Condtruction per battery able to cope with 100 amp charge and discharge rates - which imho should NEVER be reached per battery - have Lifepo4 batteries , become a worthwhiletion for Battery Banks - at last Li Time and Power Queen batteries are now able - if treated right - to achieve worthwhile Service Life Levels. If People like Clark were not giving the battery testing Co erage needed, how the hell would you know what to get, or how to set them up properly if you Live Aboard, if it wasn't for people like Clark doing Outstanding Work ? 🤔 Bob. PS. Can you imagine the amount of time I have had to put in,before being able to Recommend Li Time and Power Queen Batteties, without getting Sponsorship from either of them - and I haven't even needed to even buy any of their batteries yet - and my Bank 1 batteries are going to continue being really high quality 4500 recharge Cycle AGM Batteries, Housebank 2 will be Lifepo4, and they'll help to maximise the AGM Batteries Service Life - possibly to 30 plus years barring lightning strikes. If you are Live Aboard, this is the stuff that Really Matters, believe it or not. Bob. 👍❤️
@brownnoise357 thanks. I have seemed to make some headway towards getting the cheap suppliers to do a bit better job. You only see the videos but I am influencing on their end for a better product in the future.

PS. When I get my next Boat, I'll probably do an occasional Free Blog with Hints, Tips and infrequent Test Results on things I deem to be worth Testing. This may include video footage of how professionals Tackle jobs and their reasoning. This approach, because I am disabled, and I'm no longer able to do the work myself. This is an opportunity for really good skilled workers, able to demonstrate their worth whil I am able to pay them to do it. I'll be starting withna terrific Bostyard, which did an Outstanding job with my last Sailboat, and though we didn't have enough time to do CopperCoat Anti Fouling, I have every confidence in them being able to apply it properly. As it was, they did Pettit Trinidad Pro Hard Antifouling for me, and did a first class job. I'll get Peter the owner to sort out someone local to do the video Record, and keep my ugly mug out of sight due to the risk of cracking expensive display s Reefs.
