🤔 Is "Dance of Eternity" harder than Fracture?! (No.)

- Lots of you people have been asking me to play Dream Theater's "Dance of Eternity" because it's "harder than Fracture" by King Crimson. Well, I haven't played Dance of Eternity in about 20 years and I can still pull it off without a whole lot of practice.
Fracture is much more than a hard piece of music. It's a mindset.
More info: failuretofract...
(No offense meant to John Petrucci, Dream Theater, etc. This piece is pretty awesome and I'm just having fun.)

A little obnoxious for someone that plays both songs incorrectly don't you think?
In my opinion, both songs are hard in their own way, Dance is definitely more demanding on the **technical** aspect, while fracture makes u **think** more about where you are in the song.
Haven't you seen all the people calling me smug and arrogant on the channel? "Obnoxious" is the word my mother used most of my childhood.
Neither song is easy and I'm not great at either of them, but that doesn't mean I can't evaluate the difficulty of one song over another.
@@MakeWeirdMusic Just to clarify, I was not trying to attack you, it was just an honest observation/critisism of your demeanor in the video.
I respect the effort on learning these types of songs, I know they are quite challenging. Unsurprisingly you are bound to get negative feedback when you compare anything to something else, specifically when u try to diminish one of the sides in favor of the other.
Totally disagree. Fracture is way way more difficult technically, it requires more control, more sense of timing and more focus. After all, Dance of is harmonically simpler, consonant and easier to analize and transcribe. Both great tracks tho'... saying that is simpler does not mean "diminishing" one side over another. That is a football supporter kind of attitude in my opinion, good for teenager fans.
Doesn't seem obnoxious to me, just showing a sense of humour. He seems too self-aware to be obnoxious
This is the reason why deaf dumbos shouldn't comment about music without the knowledge of music theory. That sh*t from Bleed is one of the least technical songs. And the number of time signature changes DoE has can cover a complete Bleed album. @@za-music
What a great vid! I love all of the self-referential mistake notes haha; so great to see a balance of humility, knowledge, and pure fun
Thank you Danylo. Hope you’re well.
Haha yes. TDOE is a very complex song, but it's ultimately just a bunch of sections strapped together you just learn and get up to speed, it's very linear. With Fracture for example it can be very tricky to pick it up mid-song.
Absolutely right Boggo
Wow!! You are very talented and very enjoyable to watch!! Thank you
Thanks a lot, David!
People who play guitar but never practice:
"You should try Dream Theater, it's impossible"
Exactly. Thanks Daniel!
How cool that Toyah is holding up your book! I love their TY presence, and try to catch their Sundays. I had heard a lot about this band, but never anything BY the band, until now. Awards to your performance in making it all look so easy. But the linearity is absent in the King's offering. Fripp's level of indefatigable discipline bears some pretty rare and exotic fruit. And you would never guess it by his mild demeanor.
Kudos for finally attaining Fractureality. One huge benefit from any such undertaking is this: No matter what else you do, from this day forward, you can reassure yourself by honestly saying: "At least I am not having to learn Fracture again!"
Thanks, Mr. Woundrous! Very glad you enjoyed it.
And yes, I think about "At least I'm not playing Fracture anymore" pretty often.
Well this begs a bigger question; has John Petrucci ever tried to play Fracture? That would make an interesting video series. Issue a challenge to the greats to play Fracture.
I actually recruited him for our fracture global collaboration video and he couldn’t do it
@@MakeWeirdMusic Wow!
@@MakeWeirdMusic Is that a lie?
@@MakeWeirdMusic Is that a lie?
I think it’s a misinterpretation. John did not have the time. He certainly has the ability
I only know of Dream Theater thanks to LTE; video title is correct and edited note about comparing it to Fracture is also correct (though one could contrast it LOL)
Beautiful vid, and beautiful 7 stringed guitar, yo.
Thank you and thank you Jazio!
Have the people commenting ever tried to play the songs? It takes one attempt to play Fractured to realise it's completely impossible. Dance of Eternity is nowhere close.
We both know the answer to this question.
For instance, Maria Barbieri made a video of her playing fracture and it seems very good, however, she played along with the original recording so it is hard to tell whether she picked every note.
Having tried to learn both songs, I can confidently say that while both are difficult in their own right, Dance of eternity just does not reach Fracture's level of difficulty.
Dance of Eternity might seem to be especially difficult for people who don't play guitar or drums. It's certainly not easy, but it definitely won't kick your ass like Fracture will. Knocked my ego down a peg, that's for sure. I appreciate the sort of stance you've taken with other comments calling you obnoxious for this, saying it how it is. I think anyone who's tried learning both will know that they aren't really comparable.
Thank you, Heather! Really appreciate your thoughtful comment.
This song is not easy but it seems is just a showcase for dexterity, there is nothing in it that would make it memorable; To me it is just a bunch of musical exercises.
Sometimes Berklee students make Berklee music.
I once went to see Stick Men, who were opening for DT.
I didn't last 20 minutes of DT before I had to escape the cheesy wankfest.
Out of all songs that seem like a bunch of exercises strung together, this one is my favorite. It has fun surprises like the bass tapping break with the keyboard response, then the ragtime piano solo and bass solo. And the general attitude of the song is cool. I like both, but can totally see your point.
It’s a super fun song to play with some very fun listening moments. But it’s hardly a melodic track
@@stephencoxbass Yes it is fun, specially if you are a musician, but the average listener would be hard pressed to listen to it more than a couple of times.
I think it's harder to memorize with all the parts stuck together and moving through those time signatures, and it's probably harder on bass than fracture 😂 , but wow! I think it's cool that you addressed this and played it! And your sarcastic faces were hysterical!
Haha thanks for appreciating the humor, Stephen!
Okay, now Close to The Edge?
Oh man. I played that a long time ago too!!
@@MakeWeirdMusic well i´d love to hear it
DoE is just as hard as Fracture. Why? Cause they're both impossible for me!
Great playing Anthony!
LOL thanks Hercules
Pretty fucking incredible you remember this after not playing it for 2 decades lmao (even with the hilarious little fudge parts)
I played it A LOT when I was younger. A friend and I used to play the whole album together. It was a major part of my guitar training.
... Love your expressions... my cat's bouncing off the walls in the meantime ...
Haha some music for relaxing
What a cool axe!
Thanks Sean!
I hope Fripp makes something way harder before he stops making music.
I think that’s what FraKctured was supposed to be.
@@MakeWeirdMusic From what I read, people asked him to play Fracture again, so he wrote FraKctured specifically for New Standard Tuning.
@@tookmyjob KC now plays Fracture (the old one) live. Robert plays it in NST too.
And I have it transcribed in my book! Thanks Den
I flew down to Texas to see the ProjeKCt 3 tour, and had the incredible privilege of sitting near Robert in the empty bar before the Dallas show as he practiced FraKCtured.
It was amazing to hear him go an hour or more, nonstop, making mistakes and beginning again, without a rest.
I love this video Anthony… Somehow I knew that you were familiar with this piece. By the way have you taken a gander at “Trap” by the League of Gentlemen? Fripp’s part there is kind of diabolical as well.
Thank you! I haven’t heard Trap but I’ll look it up
@@MakeWeirdMusic Yes, my hope is that you'll get so excited by it that you'll publish a book of League of Gentlemen transcriptions for us mortals!
I'm starting the work here: soundslice.com/slices/rCNMc
Don't know if I'll finish and I can't promise anything, but this is what I've done so far.
Jaw dropping!!!
Haha thank you
so fun and weird!
love the long island eye rolls!
You know it, buddy!!
Bravo!
Thanks
Gnip Gnop. One for the truly deep Dream Theater dvd fans 😂. Seriously, that was AWESOME 🔥🎸
With all the mistakes for sure
@3:37 now that's a classic ATG face!
Haha indeed. Sorry I missed you on Father’s Day. Hope you had a good trip.
Whoever compares this to fracture has not listened the enough amount of music
😂😂💯
The best part of this video is how much fun you're having playing it, even when you go Full On Idiot Mode. Love seeing big smiles in music.
Thank you. Was genuinely having fun.
Idiot mode is my favorite!
QED. Fracture still kicks everyone' a$$. As you said, a much more linear piece of music. Watching you (and others) try to deal with the sustained pressure and concentration that seems to be required to play Fracture is so different.
Fracture is a mind game and a body game. DoE is a guitar game. More like typing.
@@MakeWeirdMusic I can type!
dance of eternity is harder to learn, fracture is harder to play and perfect
That's a fair statement
Can you play "É Fácil" from Arnaldo Baptista
Never heard of it.
Fracture is much harder, but TDOE sounds harder
That's a good distinction, Pearson.
Yeah No the fans messed up. The dance of eternity is not the hardest song to play for guitar by DT. That title imo goes to either this dying soul, Octavarium, or illumination theory.
I know this bcs i have played the dance of eternity and And attempted other songs
also. Yes Fractured is harder. No doubt about it.
Some of the stuff on train of thought is insane. Like the end of the 2nd track (I think) with all the scale fragments. Reminds me of the crazy quintuplet part of Erotomania. Anyway, I agree with you on all counts.
@@MakeWeirdMusic yes 👌
This guy is just better than us mere mortals
Haha nah
Wow. As a hardcore Frank Zappa fan, I rarely listen to other groups creations but this was really an ear opener if there ever was one... Thank you so much!
So glad you enjoyed it and got that out of this video! I praise your openmindedness.
DoE has nothing on Fracture!
💯. It’s not even close.
Beers!
Beer me a beer, Darrell!
Now do Fracture backwards.
How about just standing backwards? Or sitting upside down? Lol
Out of all of Dream Theater's catalogue, The Dance of Eternity is certainly not the most technical piece. It's rythmicaly complex for sure, but not incredibly technical. If I were to pick a very technically challenging guitar part from a DT song, I think I'll probably pick the solo from 'In The Name of God', or the arpeggios in the opening solo of The Glass Prison (which are supposed to be alternate picked - insane!).
That solo is cool, and I LOVE Glass Prison. Dark Eternal Night is another favorite. I used to be able to play the glass prison arpeggios but I haven’t tried since the album came out.
Ugh
Ugh!
Ever tried playing it clean, no distortion. Distortion is very forgiving ;)
😂🤣 I already hear uncountable mistakes. Don’t make me play it clean!!
@@MakeWeirdMusic Sounded OK to me :)
Distortion is actually super unforgiving. To play a song clean, you just have to be able to play the notes. To play a song distorted, you have to be able to play the notes while muting perfectly. This is why I consider practicing a distorted tune clean an exercise in getting surprised by how sloppy you actually are once you play it with gain
@@TMmodify Great points!
