    The end result is very nice. I am hoping to set up something similar, would the plants grow well without crushed lava rock? or would it be more beneficial to get some?

    • @Nanoscape

      Thanks! Since I’m not using a filter, the crushed lava rock is crucial. It provides space for beneficial bacteria to grow.

      You don’t need the lava rock but something for bacteria to grow in like sand

      I personally just used some small pea gravel from Lowes, & did about an inch, then 2/3 in of sand for my first big tank build (40 gallon) so far everything is doing real well!

    I love the look of this bowl. I just ordered some pearl weed they’re pretty long and when I planted it in my tank it looks kinda messy. Will it straighten itself out in days like pennywort does or is the messy look permanent? Advice cuz yours look very neat.

      The stems are kind of weak and they need the support from each other to stay straight. You can always trim it and replant the stems and it will grow back stronger! I trimmed and replanted the stems a bunch of times.

    My question is how do you get the water to siphon through that small hose without dunkin’ it in the water like a big siphon?? because there’s no room to dunk it

    What kind of fish did you have in there?

    Pearlweed... I always really liked it too.
    I used to plant it in the ground in my 25 liter aquariums, but is far too high-maintenance for me.
    At some point I switched to Japanese threadwort (blyxa japonica).
    Much less work with it, and looks like a grassy meadow.

      Pearlweed is a magical plant! I love how fast it grows and trimming is kind of relaxing 😅

    Shoulda had the crushed lava rock on top of the aquasoil, capped substrate is the way to go, even with aquasoil.

      @@Nanoscape my question is can I cap the aqua soil with sand?

    • @Nanoscape
      @Nanoscape  10 місяців тому +1

      Ohhh. You can, but it’s not necessary. I prefer to not cap it with anything. Aquasoil is designed so it will sink and be fine as the top layer of your substrate. If you were using soil from your garden, then you’d need to cap it with sand.

    is that big enough for the fish? no shade, just asking. i saw you had medaka rice fish in there, which apparently need a tank size of at least 10g for a small school.

    • @Nanoscape
      @Nanoscape  9 місяців тому +1

      It’s a 4 gallon bowl and the rice fish were raised from eggs like 3 months ago. This isn’t where they will be when they’re fully grown.
