  • In today's video I drew and colored three different apples using three different kinds of colored pencils, Polychromos, Schpirerr Farben, and Caran D'Ache.
    I tried to make them as similar as possible. It was very interesting how the different sets had different varieties of colors, so I had to get a little creative to try and get the colors to look as similar as possible.

    Lovely. I began coloring with prisma premier, then went to Caran D'ache Pablos and recently have been working with polychromos. I find that I reach for a combination of the three depending on my project. This was an excellent comparison!

      Amy Remillard thank you! It was interesting to use all three for the same picture in sequence. I was really able to tell the nuance -y differences between them.

    Dea, Great apple tutorial !! Would it possible for you to do a tutorial on some florals? I have found that most coloring books have a lot of flowers in them and it would most helpful to learn how to color them. In your opinion are the Pablos worth the eye-watering cost of these pencils? What pencil would you say are comparable to these Pablo colored pencils?

    It's a joy to watch you color:) thank you... Just purchased the Farben pencils from amazon because of all the nice reviews and to go along with the prismas that already have in stash. Really wanted the polychromos but they are a little spendy for my abilities. So wish me luck and looking forward to your videos.....

    No need for the white pen. It takes something away from the drawings.

      I might agree with you! Nice thing about those gel pens is that you can remove it. I thought so after I did the first--then wanted the continuity.

    I think out of all three drawings the one done with thePolychromos by Faber Castell is the prettiest. The colors look more natural than any of the others. I bought the Polyvhromos a couple of weeks ago and I just love them. I prefer them to any others.

    I have the S Farben set, well worth $26 bucks....One negative is once you run out of a color that's it...there is no option to buy one pencil at a time, set only....From all the research on here I think Polychromos are superior with thicker lead and can buy one at a time, no breakage....I think I will get a 24 set of Polychromos and colors I do not have - will use from the Farben set.

    • @DeaLenihan
      @DeaLenihan  6 років тому +2

      I have to agree. I think the Polys are one of the best out there, and happily we can get replacements. I love the Prisms too, despite the negative press.

    Colour light vastness is what really matters for a final design for me. But I would love to own the three sets. The Faber castles are so jolly expensive for rough work and designing. I would love to have the cars D'Ache for sure too! I am now to drawing and colouring as I have only done illumination for calligraphy with my Faber Castells.

    Just found your video scrolling through UA-cam because I just ordered the SF pencils, I must say after watching your beautiful coloring I am even more excited! 20:05 - The best way I've heard Faber-Castell described is that they're a "silky smooth" rather than a "creamy soft" (a la Prismacolors). But one thing that can be said about Caran D'ache is that they formulate their products so that all the colors are consistent throughout all their various sets. And the "feel" is also made to be consistent. Reds are typically the softest pigments, but Yellows are usually made with harder materials, so Caran D'ache has to add harder binders to their Reds and softer waxes to their Yellows in order for them to be evenly matched. That's why they feel sturdier.
    They do this so that there's no guesswork about how each pencil might vary in performance, you'll never have to worry about adjusting your pressure. It'll remain consistently the same, giving you (what they claim) an overall better experience while coloring. Another unique thing about Caran D'ache (specifically their Pablos) is that they can be used on any paper. I've had issues with Prismacolor not going on certain surfaces. Derwent pencils also need a specific tooth to latch unto.
    So I guess it depends on what's important to the user, as they figure out their own particular art style and usage patterns. I know for some people who are more easily fatigued or who have arthritis, soft or silky lay-down is important to their experience. Others who prefer detailed work or who don't like how fast creamy pencils whittle down & waste, prefer a harder long-lasting point. To each, their own.

    • @DeaLenihan
      @DeaLenihan  3 роки тому +1

      Thank you so much for that info! Silky soft is a great way to describe it, and I love those pencils. They are currently my favorite pencils… Meaning the Polys… But I recently purchased a Luminance white and kind of fell in love with it, so I’ve been considering investing in the larger set

    • @YourMajesty143
      @YourMajesty143 3 роки тому

      @@DeaLenihan - Yes, they're a quality investment, their silkiness is exactly why I love using them. In fact, I love all the artist brands, but for different reasons. I love Prisma for blending, but Polychromos are my go-to bc they layer better and I don't have to sharpen them as much, so there are no interruptions while I'm in the zone painting with pencils. I love Derwent for their innovative prowess, the Inktense are incredibly vibrant but require heavier paper. I love Caran D'ache for their pigments, quality, product consistency, and eco-consciousness. I have Brutfuner on their way in the mail as an affordable option -- bc I want to stretch out my investment in the Faber-Castells -- but now I'm wondering if I should've gotten Schirperr Farben instead. I keep hearing them compared as an alternative to Polychromos. Maybe I'll get their 150 set in the near future. Did they seem comparable enough to you in their smoothness?

    • @TheBibliophilePuzzler
      @TheBibliophilePuzzler 6 років тому +1

      I’d say at this point, Dea, that the Schpirerr Farben are my favorites of the three, not that they are better, just easier for me to use, I do have the full sets of both the Polys and the Pablos, but don’t have enough experience as of yet with layering. I can’t always do well with the Pablos...very hard to use, in fact. The Polychromos are great, but hard for me to layer.

    Dear Dea , I am asking you to choose which picture do u like the best .Please give me your opinion and the reason(s) why and maybe number these three apples in order of preference. I will give you my choice. Schpirerr Farben first then the Caran..as second but that is just my thoughts on this, but as you are able to see the three first hand I am very interested in hearing from you.. Thankyou.

    • @DeaLenihan
      @DeaLenihan  6 років тому +3

      I think the Schpirerr Farben pic came out the best, then the Polychromos...but I was thinking it over and wondered if the fact that the first one was the most interesting to do because it was with new pencils that I was unfamiliar with and I was being a bit more careful. Also by the third one I was not as perky as I was during the first go round. This was a very interesting test and I learned SO much. ox

    Wanted to get a start on the apple in your small drawing you did along with the Castle Art Pencil swatch you provided, so came and watched this one for the first time. Was hoping to to get the colors you used for the apple you did with the S.F. Pencils as that is the main brand I'm using on the picture (along with a small amount of Crayola) ....hmmm....guess what? When they came out with names for these pencils, they also apparently changed the numbers on them because I don't have any of those numbers on mine. Oh well...just have to choose my own colors! 😊

    Nice juicy apples. I have some Karismacolour from some years ago which I love and would probably opt for Faber Castell as replacements. On the question of price do you know if the dearer ones last longer and even out cost a bit?

    • @DeaLenihan
      @DeaLenihan  6 років тому +1

      music Faber? Interesting question. I know the core is a bit wider and harder, and they do hold a point very well. I am assuming here but the combo of those two qualities make me think they would last longer since they would need to be sharpened less often.

      I watched a video series which compared how long different pencil brands would last! I've always wondered as it can be an expensive medium- the vid I saw compared the Polychromos (1 pencil covered about 45 pages), with prismacolor premier whonly covered 4pages with about 46 sharpenings!! They are very soft and small so one would expect the prismas wouldn't last long. But impressed with how much can get from the polychromos! Saving my pennies! :)

    • @MeganMcCar
      @MeganMcCar 6 років тому +1

      +Megan McCarthy The size of the pages fully covered by a colour pencil were about A4 size btw. May also differ between pencils in the same range. Hopefully I can find the video series again. Really helps one's decision if on a budget, though I do love the 'buttery' feeling of prismas. But definitely want to try the polychromos, as have Derwent artists range and Coloursoft-no experience with oil-based pencils. Great comparison vid btw- new subscriber :)
