Spelt is a type of wheat. I suggest finding some clay and making a cooking pot and some bowls (important - you need a bowl to eat out of a pot); cooking meals in the pot gives you substantially more nutrition than raw veg/grain or roasted meat. Bread is a bit far down the tech tree, but with a pot you can make porridge out of grain (and optional berries).
I just bought the game too and discovering in a very similar (hilarious?) way... No spoilers... If you have time it's beneficial to cut the branches off the tree before cutting it down. You'll get stacks of sticks to support future building. Yes... Find clay! It changes everything... the map can help you here once your figure out the coloration... Food consumption is higher when something is in your left hand... Good luck with the garden party...
That weird hole in the air is a rift; they spawn and despawn randomly every couple of days, just stay away from them. You can eventually prevent them from spawning near your house by lighting up the area thouroughly, but that isn't really an option in the early game.
A tip / warning: there's crop rotation thing in VS meaning different plants need different nutrients in the soil and they drain from it what they need. You may want to separate your crops by nutrients category otherwise they may grow super slow.
Lit torches can be extinguished by throwing them into water if you really want, but you don't need to extinguish them; they will last forever in your inventory or a chest, the timer only starts when you place them (and it resets if you pick them up). Note that placed torches need to be protected from rain.
You're quickly becoming one of my fav UA-camrs ❤ I hopped on your live today for a sec but hopped off because I didn't want any spoilers 😅 I love this series! Can't wait for more.
It is possible to craft a box trap that will catch small live animals, but they need to be baited with fruit, veg, or grain, which makes them more useful for catching livestock for your farm than for catching animals to eat. There are strategies to passively catch animals for meat, let me know if you want spoilers. :)

i suggest making a choke point to defend yourself against rifts, eventually they will spawn way more than 1 per night.
