Congratulations on discovering pottery! Shame about the forest fire.... let that be a lesson to you to clear the area more thoroughly next time! :D Crock pots are for storing meals that you have made in the cooking pot, so you will want to make a cooking pot or two, and at least one bowl (required for eating meals). You might also want to look into the clay storage vessel; they help preserve food and have more storage space than the reed chests. Light prevents rift and drifter spawning in the lit-up area, but does not prevent drifters that have spawned in dark areas from tracking towards you. So torches/lanterns work best in combination with walls or fences.
impressed the ruins only contained a single bony soil, there's usually more soil, and/or something else. but you can process the soil for useful loot. as you transition to more reliable foods, consider planting the cat tail roots, so you have easy access to them. ngl i smiled when you got giddy at stuff catching fire. you should try and think of it less as a game, and try to figure how you'd do it in real life. you can use lit torches to light things too, for example.
1.most things are ground storable, experiment! 2.if you're in need of reeds, replant some instead of cooking it all. 3.There are a lot of nice building blocks you could make from raw materials like, Hay, dirt, excess clay.

Congratulations on finding clay. I hope you found the "duplicate layer" mode for clay forming. It makes crafting much faster.
even islands need fences, hares can swim
So much clay 😮
