Spent 13 years in Fairbanks AK working for an Air Taxi operation, we had one DC-3, 7 Navajo's, 4 Beech 99's and two King Air 200's, the 99's and King Airs all had belly pods. Many of the villages we flew to had gravel strips. At this stage of the game Im sure somebody makes rock deflectors for the main gear on the Kodiak, just like the Cessna Caravan, without those, rocks will quickly destroy the deice boots on the horizontal stabs. But what we discovered is that the rocks coming off the nose gear will destroy the front of the belly pods, we didn't have the technical ability to do it but everybody agreed that if somebody could actually vulcanize some rubber onto the front of the belly pods, that would be the ultimate solution . If theres a rotating beacon on the bottom of the belly pod like our aircraft had, you'll also have to fabricate and install an extruded wire mesh cage around that beacon, to keep the rocks from taking it out. Routinely operating aircraft from gravel strips is a learning process, just thought I would share a couple things I learned while working in AK, just in case Kodiak wanted to go after that market.
Sold!!! Now that’s an airplane I would buy!!! The Kodiak is a rugged, functional, practical, and ultimately among the safest aircraft for any Part 121 operation out there. Thanks very much for your thorough review!!!
Do you have the Kodiak 100? Notwithstanding, have you the capacity to convert the interior for patient transport. + stretcher and rollers (removable) + Oxygen + Bridge cradles for CPAT and ECG
John Fitzpatrick The Kodiak can be configured in multiple seat configurations (2-10). In PNG we utilize the Med-Pac Air Ambulance system which has internal O2 tank and can be configured for air and suction. The ceiling and sides of the passenger/cargo area have holders for cargo straps and/or D-rings for hanging saline bags, etc. Multiple oxygen ports in the passenger/cargo area for passengers and/or medical staff. With the MedPac mounted to the right side of the aircraft you can still install one seat aft of the Med-Pac and 3-4 along the left hand side. We also have a mount for equipment to monitor heart rate and 02 saturation for the patient.
Excellent presentation you sold me & I wasn’t even in the market. Low stall speed, short take off, rugged landing gear, cargo pod, versatile interior, this plane is amazing.
I’m very privileged to have been the lead engineer on the Kodiak as I designed this aircraft from the ground up. I hope you enjoy my life’s work! I also stayed at a Holiday Inn last night.
It was a privilege for me to do the initial powerplant installation design. Fond memories of starting in Priest River before moving to Sandpoint. Very pleased to see it finished.

Flew these in northern Canada as a Canadian out of my IFR flight school. Perfect aircraft for off strip landings. Bullet proof, great in very cold weather . Love these birds. Time for a “kode500” plus version. Single engine but 20 feet longer. Always needed 1000 pounds more of payload for mining gear. The pt6 was fabulous. Stalling it was ALMOST, to impossible, even in a severe shake . I Think the “ kode” I flew for 400 hours had the regular tire type. The large tire model option looks versatile and awesome. Does Kodiak plan to compete with the new Cessna courier twin ? . Looks like a larger Twin Otter. Kodiak did well at 70-80 kts circles in valleys. Range was always short in the north where we needed6-7 hours at cruise with out stopping What is the range now? Terrific airplane.
Introduced to this aircraft through MSFS. And it really can do everything, can't it. I love the power of the thing. I mean the power means it does require A LOT of trim, but it really is the definitive turboprop, I think. Longer range ones like the PC-12 or say the TBM don't have the versatility of this thing.
I like the Pilatus PC-12 also! However it is kinda Apples-Oranges. It would not do as well as the Kodiak on real nasty airstrips. The PC-12 Can however operate from less than good airstrips and it goes a lot faster! I have always liked the PC-6, however the Kodiak edges it out of top place!

I believe this plane is a late arrival compare with the PC12 and Caravan, What can this plane do that the other two cannot. Choosing the PT-6 is a no brainer, this engine is quieter than the straight through types, they hogged 70% of the small turbine market and they feel they have the right to be the dead beat when it came to adding modern automation to the engine. They were about 2 decades behind everyone adding FADEC, auto throttle, one button start etc.despite they have a parent company that did much of the R and D work. finally they were kicked off their butt by GE a new competitor on the horizon. Isaiah Lali....”more cheaper” huh....remind me never to fly with you. As a pilot myself I only fly with competent and intelligent people. And yes....please post a video of your caravan because there’s a 95% chance your full of shit.
“Every one of our Kodiak’s have a leather wrapped yoke. And so it’s a very safe airplane” LOL. At the beginning you mention, no other airplane is made for the bush. Quest doesn’t acknowledge that the Cessna Caravan is a bush plane?
The Kodiak edges both the Caravan and Pilatus Porter out for the job it was made for. The Caravan can carry more people which is one of its advantages. The Kodiak can land with a typical load on shorter nastier airstrips and has a shorter wing which helps.
I have to ask now. Why do turboproppers always start their engines with to proppeller in Feather stand? Feather is smart when you are actually flying. But when stationary it is the most absolutely the most resistance. I think pilots are not the stupidest of the bunch. So there must be a good reason for it. Please tell me!
@@ErikJohnston I have got too construct an answer from your reaction . The kodiak 100 has, so I see during your walk around, the propellers feathered. So I guess that you say it’s a P&W engine? But: why do they feather them at all, and why start them that way.. why not turn the propeller 90 degrees? Then no resistance.
@@OlavBergman Pratt & Whitney engines feather upon shut down because they lose oil pressure then. Oil pressure is what controlled many aircraft engines propellers pitch. Garrett props have locks in them I believe. I’m not an A&P but I bet there are videos in UA-cam better explaining that function
Thanks! I’ve been looking for an answer to my question on youtube. No succes :-) It might be, from your extra information (Thanks!!) , that when the engine shuts off during flight, by accident, resulting in no more oil pressure, then all you want is a feathered prop!! Maybe thats why its designed to set like that during shut down. But I must say, while starting, It always looks like a whip cream beater.

Only DRACO beats the Pilatus PC-6 tail dragger! However the Kodiak beats them both for the job it was meant to do. The PC-6 is vary good! The Kodiak is just a bit better from all directions for the job!
I'm getting a Cessna Grand Caravan 208 B, it's more cheaper, spacious, economical and practical.
The kodiak is more expensive but does have the same qualities of a 208 but it has the luxury of a private jet
Post a vid when you get it pls.
Isaiah Lali....”more cheaper” huh....remind me never to fly with you. As a pilot myself I only fly with competent and intelligent people. And yes....please post a video of your caravan because there’s a 95% chance your full of shit.
@@specforged5651 he's from a different country and American English is not his first language. Lighten up.
@@specforged5651 you're full of shit, not your.
I think it is a Ford 350 for 2 million
Damn, I'd make a fine camper out of this plane.
“Every one of our Kodiak’s have a leather wrapped yoke. And so it’s a very safe airplane” LOL. At the beginning you mention, no other airplane is made for the bush. Quest doesn’t acknowledge that the Cessna Caravan is a bush plane?
Or pilatus porter???
The Kodiak edges both the Caravan and Pilatus Porter out for the job it was made for. The Caravan can carry more people which is one of its advantages. The Kodiak can land with a typical load on shorter nastier airstrips and has a shorter wing which helps.
I have to ask now. Why do turboproppers always start their engines with to proppeller in Feather stand? Feather is smart when you are actually flying. But when stationary it is the most absolutely the most resistance. I think pilots are not the stupidest of the bunch. So there must be a good reason for it. Please tell me!
Garrett engines don’t feather upon shut down. The P&W engines do.
@@OlavBergman
Pratt & Whitney engines feather upon shut down because they lose oil pressure then. Oil pressure is what controlled many aircraft engines propellers pitch. Garrett props have locks in them I believe. I’m not an A&P but I bet there are videos in UA-cam better explaining that function
Thanks! I’ve been looking for an answer to my question on youtube. No succes :-)
It might be, from your extra information (Thanks!!) , that when the engine shuts off during flight, by accident, resulting in no more oil pressure, then all you want is a feathered prop!! Maybe thats why its designed to set like that during shut down.
But I must say, while starting, It always looks like a whip cream beater.
Any chance to increase GW to 7500 pounds?
