Beautiful And 17, Great Combination At That Time! This Was A Great Song Ms Brenda Recorded In 1964! Still One Of My Favorite Female Singers Of All-Time!
She is one of my fav singers ever top 5 definitely. They say she's 17 here and there is an innocence but at the same time she comes off extremely mature and polished. Not to mention her voice makes her appear to be older than she is. Nice clip.
Dick Clark deserves so much recognition for showcasing and giving such respect to Black artists in such volatile times! Great performance and interview!! Thanks, Dick Clark! RIP.
@oldbeatpete Yes. He made a very strange comment about her singing.in another AB clip (I'll Always Love You): something like, "You do things to my spine that shouldn't be done."
Dick was such a great guy!! A true Champion in such a troubled time!! Love and miss you Mr. Clark!! You helped bring some peace in many of our lives. Rest in Peace Sir!!
I think this was one of her earliest performances wherein someone else was in charge of her wardrobe and hair (someone old fashioned). Because in subsequent performances you will find Brenda's clothes and hairstyles being VERY FLY. I mean her hair was LAID !! Her style and fashion was ahead of its time.
Well this was also earlier 1960s. 1965 and on is when the timeless looks started. People still dress in styles and ways that originated in the late 1960s and they don’t even realize.
*Ty Stephens* said 8 months ago; "Dick Clark deserves so much recognition for showcasing and giving such respect to Black artists in such volatile times! Great performance and interview!! Only the most well-known Black artists could get on TV until great people like DC came along on TV who were genuinely unbiased when it came to race.
srercrcr No, it doesn't "have to" be brought up, but the comment is appropriate as far as discussing some of Dick Clark's contribution to American culture during that era. I reposted the comment because far too many people have no idea how different things were just a few decades ago. Clark was a good human being and there's nothing wrong with informing those who otherwise wouldn't know that. Think about that.
THE WOMAN WAS/ IS VERY TALENTED. IT IS RUMORED THAT GORDY WOULD NOT KEEP HIS HANDS OFF OF HER, AND THAT THIS WAS THE REASON SHE DID NOT STAY LONG AT MOTOWN. DON'T KNOW IF IT IS TRUE OR NOT. DAMN SHAME IF IT IS.
loveyouall66 , Gordy ripped off many naive young artists, what a slime he is. So likely this was true. In any case she was smart enough to leave early on.
Brenda honestly looks straight out of the Holiness church and that's the issue, she looks like a church girl, like Mahaliah Jackson or something and they made her more glamorous later on. She looked like part of the Gospel group the Caravans....Glad she spiced it up! She's beautiful and talented.
Great song. It's great to see the interview along with the performance. That hair though! That was too many styles combined on one head for my taste. Still a pretty young lady.
Dick Clark was amazing, however, when he relived American Bandstand´s highlights as executive producer in American Dreams, some of these performances DID NOT even look close at what they were back in the times. But still, his legacy will run forever in pop culture.
full package beautiful and can sing her ass off berry shouldve paid attention more to her career she was 100 times more talentive and beautiful than Diana.
She lived in the same 'hood that I did, in Los Angeles. I used to see her in the local Kentucky Fried. Considering that she was a star as well as a stone fox - the phrase, "fine behind," was invented to describe her - she was a very nice, very friendly girl.
Louvain Demps of the Motown in-house background singers, The Andantes is a good friend of mine who had nothing but good things to say about Brenda Holloway. She is one of a very few recording artists that I would like to meet. I would like to see her write her biography; being the first from the West Coast to sign with Motown, I sure she has a story worth hearing.
MOTOWN had a TON Of SOLO ARTISTS Recording for them. The GROUPS Artists were Great, But Those SOLO ARTISTS were Something that made you get up and went out to find their records too. BRENDA HOLLOWAY and SYREETA WRIGHT were Both MOTOWN Ladies Who Passed Away, But Recorded for that WORLD FAMOUS RECORD LABEL:> MOTOWN RECORDS.
That voice WOW !! She signed with Motown early when Motown first started up. Barry Gordon had his eyes on her, tried to hook her but she rejected this advances. Rumor has it that Barry was crazy about her and she wouda been the 1st lady of Motown but she had a man and got tired of Barry & the Motown rift and jumped ship...went back home to L.A. Years later when Diana came along and Barry chose her as Supremes lead singer, Barry pushed Diana ro study and try to emulate Brenda's vocals.
She had a lot of soul for a 17 year old. Great song
She sings like an angel and so effortlessly. I love listening and watching this beautiful lady sing. Thanks for posting.
She's still with us--way dah go Brenda! Haven't heard this one in decades. Great sound.
Give props to Dick Clark and Ed Sullivan for showcasing the many talents if black artists from past decades gone! Much Respect!!!!

Breathtaking performance from Brenda
Seventeen, wow, she's awesome.
Dick Clark deserves so much recognition for showcasing and giving such respect to Black artists in such volatile times! Great performance and interview!! Thanks, Dick Clark! RIP.
He was The Godfather to the young black performers, making many of them a 1st on television.
Recognition for seeing talent.... what a fuckn racists stretch
.
and, as I've mentioned elsewhere, I think he really liked her. Like in 'Really'.
@oldbeatpete

Thats a real singer right here , with beauty and lady like features / voice znd demeanor !
Wow, and all these years that I've loved this wonderful song, I never knew that she was only 17. The things that one learns on You Tube.
It is the best version of the song. I love Brenda. I got the original 1964 LP.
I think this was one of her earliest performances wherein someone else was in charge of her wardrobe and hair (someone old fashioned). VERY TALENTED WOMAN. SHE PERFORMED AND WROTE MUSIC AT A VERY EARLY AGE.
A real CLASSIC SONG! Many people don't know that Brenda Holloway was at one time
an IKETTE with Ike and Tina Turner....
Great song. Sure would like to hear "Love Woke Me Up This Morning" by this talented lady. Many have done the song but hers is the best.
The lovely Brenda,real talent

HAPPY 69TH BIRTHDAY BRENDA HOLLOWAY (JUNE 21, 2015)
FLAWLESS!!!
What a lovely young lady she was. Yes, she did make it. Brenda should have been the Queen of Motown, followed by Mary Wells!!
Diana Ross holds that crown and no one can take it away
I like this song as old as it is.
Great song. It's great to see the interview along with the performance. That hair though! That was too many styles combined on one head for my taste. Still a pretty young lady.
Beautiful voice and an amazing talent-Thank you for this.
As old as this song is,I like this songs
She was 17 years old at this time...And look how poised she is! Imagine today's 17 year old performers...They can be so vulgar.
mrob75 you're so right!
She can belt her songs up to heaven. An American Treasure.
THE MOST BEAUTIFULL SONG EVER... I JUST LOVE IT... THANK YOU SOOOO MUCH FOR SHAREING :)
Gotta love Brenda !!!!!!!
Simplesmente lindo

+scenery77 same here. ;)
Everyone could sing in those days. On key too. NUFF SAID.
Heaven.
Beautiful
I've never seen or heard of her before -- that I can remember. Seems like she should've been the Whitney Houston of her day.
To my baby 🍼 daddy may he rest in peace 😢 love your baby 🍼 mama Annie Diaz 💋 carrion Rodriguez
At a time when artists didn’t have to prance around looking like street walkers. Brenda along with Betty Wright are some of the great lesser knowns.
17. Thank you.
Nice.
yES !!!! EVERY LITTLE BIT HURTS !!!!!!
I heard on the oldies station that she lived on the west coast yet recorded for Motown
She was the first West Coast artist that Motown signed before they relocated to California.
She lived in the same 'hood that I did, in Los Angeles. I used to see her in the local Kentucky Fried. Considering that she was a star as well as a stone fox - the phrase, "fine behind," was invented to describe her - she was a very nice, very friendly girl.

Please make this video playable in the app. :)
1964 that was style
Every Little Bit Hurts is such a great record. I don't think Motown ever topped it, although obviously they had records that were bigger hits.
Brenda Holloway is alive and well in Los Angeles, CA.
never got the credit she deserved.
this is the original version !!!!!
DICK CLARK - WAS SO AWESOME.....HE DID SO MUCH...... FOR MY LIFE..... AND SO MUCH MUSIC I LOVE.......
To my babes Johnny 💞 Rodriguez from your wife Annie 💋 carrion Rodriguez 😢

smh, berry gordy was clearly a pedophile 😡
Pretty giri
Clever woman
Ghee I did think Mary Wells. Violin Flute Bass. She was pretty fine and could dance and sing.
DAMN SHE WAS 17 ON THIS???
that hair style make's her look's old but in 1964 it looked good

XaQaRa EquinoX

All the girls had beehives or beautiful flips!

Yeah, but that wig was hideous, even in '64. And do even start on that dress.
The Clash do a great version Mick Jones sings this song so well
I like country music
Lol did anyone catch listen real close after she finished and was coming to sit down dick Clark was like uh as in he was checking her out
Yeah - I think he kinda dug her, too. Dick Clark was a big help with getting Black music 'out there'.
Malki-tzadik wow never hear any one with that name or Shem right ?
Uncanny phrasing and tone for a seventeen year old. Far beyond her years for poise and presence. PWG
YES! Brenda Holloway was and still is the real deal.
I commented elsewhere here that she would have done well to sing with Otis Redding. Not enough time for Otis. Her phrasing is top tier.
a great singer who sounded too much like mary wells-see when i'm gone
1:33 2:36
Dr Smith you need to get get your ears checked out...I don' t know if you are listening to "Every Little Bit Hurts" By Brenda Holloway
DA Shi---
Would have been a good musical pairing: Brenda Holloway and Otis Redding.
Dark days of Jim Crow
That wig is unfortunate.
