Sometimes I listen to Brenda, Sarah Vaughn and Ella one after another and there's no doubt in my mind, Brenda's voice has no match: is just perfect and sooooo beautiful.
Her records were among the classiest on the Motown label. If there was any problem in promoting her I think it was that her songs were more adult and sophisticated at a time when Motown was hitting it big with pop songs and records that got young people moving and singing along. Brenda was, to my mind, sort of the Dionne Warwicke of Motown. I loved her, but I think most kids gravitated toward songs like "You Can't Hurry Love" and "Dancing in the Streets". They wanted that more up-beat Motown sound, but Brenda's material was like late night candlelight and champagne. Nevertheless, this is one of her great records along with "Every Little Bit Hurts", "When I'm Gone", and "You've Made Me So Very Happy".
Promoting her wasn't the problem. She told Gordy after constant sexual harassment, that she would either be his singer or his mistress but not both. He went to never-say-no Diana Ross instead and Brenda paid the price for her strength.
-I definitely agree that Berry Gordy messed up big time by concentrating on Diana Ross & not Brenda Holloway. But Diana giving it up to Berry just made him overlook a few good ones that should've gotten more famous than they did. & With Brenda around how in the hell did he want Diana?!
@@Savadorason1 because Diana was THIRSTY and powerhungry 🥴🥴🥴 sorry to tell it, some women will do ANYTHING to get next to/up under a powerful man (the boss)
He didn't miss the ball. He knew how good she was. She refused to sleep with him, he went with Diana Ross - who never met a man she wouldn't sleep with - instead, and he punished Brenda's career.
That little sister sho’ knew how to sing her song! True artistry is chiefly a matter of sharp intuition. It is natural though must be cultivated by conscious practice and application of God given talent. She is confident and relaxed so that her gift flows out quite effortlessly. The arrangement is such that her vocals are showcased to the maximum and she literally “floats” above it. I remember listening multiple times to this record when it was released. I could not get enough of the powerful emotional punch of Brenda’s soaring instrument. Wonderful, nostalgic! PWG
Brenda Holloway, noting short of AMAZING talent. She is quite a writer of songs too, You've Made Me So Very Happy is one of her compositions, and even though Blood Sweat and Tears had a bigger success on the charts with it, Brenda's version is one of the most passionate interpretations of any pop song I have ever heard. Flawless!!!!
I wouldn't get too carried away with her writing skills. She was one of four people who composed it. Frank Wilson wrote the music & Brenda & her late sister Patrice with help from Berry Gordy wrote the the lyrics.
These are great clips from AB. Brenda was a kid and what a hottie and cutie she was. I loved her as a kid back then when she was the rage and still love her today.
She's just a tad older than l so in high school, she reigned supreme here kn Chicago. This lovely woman has tslent, poise and aside from Mary Wells, the best voice of all!!
At the time, Motown was not 100% sure of how to build a Superstar. If they had, BRENDA HOLLOWAY WOULD HAVE BEEN THE ONE!!! Dick Clark LOVED LISTENING TO HER.... The Beatles loved her as well, but a bit of improper behavior on the part of others caused her to flee the business... OUR LOSS!!! She was, and IS STILL A WONDERFUL SINGER!!!
-This sweet young honey, may I dare say that, arguably, she was the Whitney Houston of the mid 60s. But she's her own Brenda Holloway! Wherever she is, ,,,,is in 2018, now 71. & IF she's gone, may she rip.
I remember how my neighbors on the left played this song on countless repeats and I did not get tired of listening through the wall. In fact I would place my ear to a glass placed against the wall to hear clearer. This is one of my lasting musical memories from the Motown golden era. A voice that literally caused my young soul to vibrate with unparalleled sonic pleasure. I totally agree that the pursuit of money and ego glorifying greatly diminished the opportunity of so many other richly deserving Motown artists. However, the lasting impact of these neglected talents leaves with those true discerning hearts and ears a likeness akin to what King Solomon recorded as “apples of gold in pictures of silver.” Paul W. Green
According to Mary Wilson's book, Miss Ross had it out with Holloway while on the tour bus during a Dick Clark tour. Miss Ross accused Holloway of stealing her can of hairspray. The fight got so out of hand that the bus driver of the tour bus kicked both Miss Ross and Miss Holloway off the tour bus so they could have it out on the side of the road.
@Marjorie Tillman Unfortunately nature has it set up that way. If you read a book on bees, you will find that there can only be one queen bee..all challengers will get stung to death.
Oooooooo🥰❤️♥️🙋🏽♀️God Bless her, such beauty not only vocally look at her her, her expressions, I'm a women and I'm in love, no not like that, But I do love her🤦🏽♀️
Wow! What a CLASSY little lady! Too bad "you know who" over at Motown couldn't keep his hands to himself...If he had, we would have had a lot more of Brenda.
I sure do miss the 70s and 80s. The music🎶today is not even the same. Sometimes I wish I could find a time machine and go back in time. Life was much easier and everyone enjoyed life! Is this your favorite song?
He really did seem to be enchanted with Brenda Holloway, didn't he?! 😂😂 He had a knack for picking out rare talent. All of that cultivated talent by way of church and the Watts, California Public School music programs. Ya gotta ❤ it.
IN MY OPINION,BRENDA HOLLOWAY AND MARY WELLS WERE THE BEST FEMALE SINGERS AT MOTOWN. SHE CHOSE TO MAINTAIN HER DIGNITY AND NOT SLEEP WITH THE BOSS. UNLIKE THE WOMAN FROM THE BREWSTER PROJECT. ITS OBVIOUS BRENDA HAS THE MAKINGS OF SUPERSTAR. SHE'S BEAUTIFUL,CLASSY,AND HAS GREAT VOICE. I THINK SHE REFUSED TO PLAY THE GAME AND THEREFORE WASN'T PROMOTED. ITS HARD TO BELIEVE, SHE ONLY 18 YEARS OLD IN THIS CLIP. LOOK AT THE WAY SHE CONDUCTS HERSELF IN THIS INTERVIEW. .
I loved the after interview and then... the Beatles giveaways.. Ringo's Comb ??? cool I think you can see my handle..Daytripper...(It can be seen written on the gates to Strawberry Fields and Abbey Road amongst others ) Those days were great and Mr Clark really presented himself gracious to all who visited...thumbs up !
@@jackanthony976 Only because she was tapping Berry Gordon, no other reason. People like Ms Brenda Holloway trump Diana’s talent. In fact, Berry Gordon had Diana Ross study Brenda’s singing so she could practice her phasing.
Just speculation, but how soon do you think Diana Ross had the Motown brass focus the song development and recordings back to her (and her group...) 🤔? Brenda definitely had the better voice.
Word have Dick Clark didnt want the Supremes before Where Did Our Love go sped up The charts in 1964 he wanted Brenda Holloway. Berry Gordy refused unless he took the Supremes as well. Dick gave in. Before the tour was over. The Supremes where headlining. By 1965 The Supremes were No.1 with 5 No1 pop in a row. .and Brenda had fallen far low behind The Supremes Vandellas and Marvelettes. But in 1964 she was High on the totem pole. By the time of this appearance her time had ended and it was all about the Supremes.
According to brenda's interview, she was being groomed to replace Mary Wells after mary left. As a matter of fact, what would you do when I'm gone was originally mary Wells. that is how good Brenda was.
And just imagine.... These same artists were segregated and were not permitted to stay in the same nice , lavish hotels as the man hosting the show. Some of these artists had to get changed in places you wouldn't believe. And had to drive miles just to use a toilet and things of that sort. What a HORROR movie it must have been for them.
He's right her voice is at the top of the list. Mowtown lost their best singer when they lost Brenda. Diane was jealous of Brenda's natural ability, she got in Gordy's ear, and eliminated her biggest threat.
Sometimes I listen to Brenda, Sarah Vaughn and Ella one after another and there's no doubt in my mind, Brenda's voice has no match: is just perfect and sooooo beautiful.

Promoting her wasn't the problem. She told Gordy after constant sexual harassment, that she would either be his singer or his mistress but not both. He went to never-say-no Diana Ross instead and Brenda paid the price for her strength.
No! Personal spite from Gordy for her telling him no.
Wow, the total package. Great voice, stage and screen presence, class act, and she wrote songs too.
She was 19 when she sang this song. Wow what a talented singer and a beautiful woman. Motown could have had another super woman singer. They blew it.
Just as capable as Diana Ross. Classy, smooth. Can you imagine a duet with her and Luther Vandross?
Just a thought, but she had it all...
I'm so in love with this woman's voice and vocal style. She is so beautiful.
I agree
Yes, love Miss Brenda Holloway! Blessed to perform many shows with her!
Her voice and delivery is one of the very best!
She's got a beautiful voice😍
What can be said about a voice this sweet and melodious? More please!
Good god, Berry surely miss the ball on her. What a voice and very pretty. I have my own thoughts on why she got away. Should've been a big star.

That's a very accurate way of putting it, the Dionne Warwick of Motown. Class, style, and enormous talent, all the way.
