Of course she sounds different from now---she's an old lady now, but if you mean she sounds different from her Atlantic years (1967-1979), I think a couple of things play into that. On Columbia, the voice was the best and freshest it ever was once fully developed---she recorded a live album of gospel songs at age 14, but I don't want to compare her as girl to her singing as a woman. I've also noticed that she recorded a number of songs on Atlantic with her voice husky. Take "Respect" for instance, her biggest hit. Her voice is husky on that record, more so than she would be on other records later during her time at Atlantic. She smoked quite a bit as a young woman, so much so that in the early 80's she lost much of her voice, namely the top of it. She later quit smoking and recovered some of it. This is Aretha when the voice was still undamaged, so she does sound different. This is her voice in premier condition.
This performance was recorded before she hooked up with the right producer and musicians, of course, but you can hear what was about to explode on the R&B scene shortly thereafter ...
I didn't know AF did a version of this song . . . until I found this! It sounds pretty good, but Brenda Holloway did it better. Check out Gladys Knight and The Pips. They covered it too!
Allison forever ♥️ I hate Christmas time because it so reminds me of you and our kids I'm so depressed you don't care at all you dropped off the face of the earth 💔 u know I'm really hurt why do you ignore me all I want is a call like how are you or something God I wish I could just talk to you al I miss my friend 💔 please 🙏 call or come home soon I still feel the same way I did
Both she and Ms. Brenda Holloway did an excellent job on this song.
And Gladys Knight & the Pips ☺️
gladys knight did a great job too. Steve Linwood's version is incredible too.
When she sings "and I'll do wrong for you" it's no joke. Her singing gets to the heart of situations like no other.
that voice 💘
Thank you for a life time of greatness, laughed, cried, danced, sang, no one can touch your soul like Auntie Re!
