It is unlikely that this performance could be improved upon. And overlaying that, this telecast was brilliant. We have all seen and heard this work dozens of times, but this telecast made the third movement, especially, very intimate for this viewer. And the audio was also brilliant. Thanks for this.

what a stunning beauty olga is.
While listening to the third movement, I thought what if this was all that survived by Beethoven? It would be considered one of the greatest pieces of music ever written, and thought to be by an anonymous composer of the 19th Century.
I have heard this type of comment before about B's music. Alfred Brendel ( I think) said that if only the middle movement of the 5th sonata (c minor)had survived, Beethoven would still be considered a great composer.

Das Gewandhausorchester und die Chöre sind die besten der Welt für dieses Weltwerk. Herr Gatti ist wohl der eigentliche Grund, dass ich dieses Jahr die schwächste Kunst halte ... Auch Solisten ... das Beste ist der Tenor im Chormann mit Ohrringen und langen Haaren um 1:15:16 Uhr!
Ich bin kein Fan Nelsons, ich vermisse die Begeisterung für das Ding, wie Mr. Chailly zeigte!
Ich verstehe auch nicht, warum das Publikum in den letzten Jahren so schnelle mit Beifallstürme bekommen?? Eine neue Mode zeigt, dass ich weiß es ist schon vorbei??

Jason Bilevitz dicker ich war an dem Abend ja da wenn die satzpausen sind und die sind bei gatti schon recht kurz gehalten da denkst du bei dem ganzen Husten das du mal ganz schnell die Seuchenschutzbehörde anrufen solltest. Aber kein Wunder bei den Privilegierten alten und Oberschichtangehorigen besuchern(die meisten fast schon tot)

Hab den ersten Satz durchgehalten, doch als Gatti dann den 2ten Satz anfing wars für mich aus...
Da hat auch das Orchester wenig Freude mit gehabt.
Kann man nur hoffen, dass Nelsons nächstes Jahr nicht wieder verhindert ist...

Ich würde dem hinzufügen, dass die Solisten (mit Ausnahme von Herrn Goerne) stellenweise zum Davonlaufen waren.
Me gusta mucho esta versión. (El concertino es Andréas Buchaz ( ex Filarmónica de Berlin).

Ich war auch erst erschrocken über die vergleichsweise vielen Fehler und Klapprigkeiten. So etwa die doch wohl eher ungewollten Rubati im ersten Satz. Das behäbige Scherzo und der demgegenüber überschnelle langsame Satz..Aber der Hit ist doch der echte Prestissimo-Schluß à la Furtwängler. Gatti will meistens zuviel und das Resultat ist dann entttäuschender als wenn man das Ganze ohne Proben durchgespielt hätte. Dennoch gibt es immer wieder sehr gut Augenblicke, so dass ich das Durchhören als sehr lohnend empfunden habe.
Herr Goerne klingt ja schrecklich. Dieses wattige Singen ist kaum zu ertragen.
Görne ist toll! Mal eine Alternative zu diesem gepressten Bierhallen-Geknödele, was man sonst zu hören bekommt.
