    For those saying to use a USB to 12V cigarette adapter, best check them out. What I saw is they only work on some USB systems, and they only put out 20 watts. That's under 2 amps at 12V...compared to a cigarette plug that puts out 10 to 15 amps. A lot of devices aren't going to come close to running on that USB adapter.

I have a 12,000 pound winch on front with ARB bumper, I’ve put this truck through its paces chained it pulled with it, this was my work truck. Love this truck. It’s never let me down. I think you guys nailed the quiet part and the gas/diesel part. I own a 2020 with a diesel and don't tow often but when I do I tow long distances, I think half my mileage is towing even though it is likely only 2% of my trips. Distances and the diesel are much quieter for 1200 miles of highway, the gas engine will race at a much higher RPM and is not that enjoyable. Now if I only towed short distances locally I would buy the gas engine in a heartbeat.

The GMs do ride and drive a lot better and the IFS is so much nicer and if you are not off roading a lot that is the way to go. Great video.

      You're spot on about buying the truck you need. I'm a diesel tech and people ask me why my pickup isn't a diesel. It's because I don't have a use for it. In almost 30 years with that truck, I doubt I have pulled a trailer 30 times.
      But I was fueling my Jetta the other day and dude asked why put a diesel in a small car. Fuel economy. But with the current problems and the way gas engines are getting the same FE as my Jetta, it's just not worth it.

    I liked your front diff & brake discussion. I bought my first 3/4 ton 4x4 in 1978. Of course it had an open differential in the front. In an effort to get closer to a true 4x4 I put a Detroit automotive True Trac in the front. It had a 3.5:1 torque bias. A gear type limited slip that sent 3.5 times the torque to the wheel that was not slipping.

    There's always things to do differently but I totally agree about the plugs. My 2015 Silverado has 3 12v socket plugs & 3 USB plugs. And 1 120v plug in. I even added 2 more USB's (for a total of 5) And I use ALL of them.
    "Your" Silverado is equipped amazingly & I'd love to have that trim level. But in today's world, even a bare bones work model truck needs a good mixture of round 12v sockets & USB.

    For a lot of years Ford had really long leaf springs on the F250 4x4 line up of trucks. These trucks rode especially smooth, in town, highway and yes off road. Bump steer was a tiny bit of an issue. Chevy and Dodge ran a much shorter set of leaf springs which made for a very harsh ride.
    There was a local suspension shop here, and I was able to spend some time with them one day, before I understood long leaf springs, nor had I driven a long leaf spring pick up before then. I worked for a Bus Mfg and it was suggested that I talk with this local company that had a strong reputation in the industry. The Stone Brothers worked on passenger vehicles up to Heavy Hauler rigs.
    The bus mfg was looking at using air ride on the bus and I was to look at all types of suspensions and do a presentation. In the end the company went with front leaf and rear air.
    In the meantime I got a big lesson in leaf spring design and use, along with Shackles a very key component. So, I am a huge fan of long leaf suspension, even for Off Road, even though they do require more maintenance.

    I gotta tell you, Casey, my driving skills went to crap during the lockdowns. I drove OTR, for gawd's sake! Okay, that was decades ago. I drove 7-ton fuel tankers in the Army - which seems like a safe thing to do. I've driven cars and trucks cross country on multiple occasions, and I've braved traffic in large cities on a regular basis. Tulsa, OKC, Dallas/Ft Worth, New Orleans, Orlando, Tampa, Evil DC, Philly, Los Angeles, San Diego, Portland, OR, Denver - I've driven some miles.
    Coming out of the lock downs, I've nearly lost my ability to back up, make turns without scraping rubber - it's pathetic. I can't even go to the dump's convenience center and park in frontwards and stay between the lines.

    Casey, I have a 2024 3500 Silverado with upfitter switches. It was a $150 factory or dealer installed upgrade I had them add. It comes prewired for strobe lights too. The wires are in your third brake light wire loom already prewired to the #5 upfitter switch. Other UA-cam videos show how to find these if you want to install strobe lights on your Silverado. Probably also has other hidden features I haven't discovered yet. Enjoyed your real-life review of this truck!

    • @charlesb4267
      @charlesb4267 8 місяців тому

      Depending on your trim level ( is yours the new style interior ? ) I gather that the switch assembly is installed in the face of the lower dash below the infotainment centre, however the switch harness is not installed from the switches or at least from the cab into the engine compartment, that the harness is bagged up and thrown into the cab ?. That is what I have been lead to believe and wondered if that was your finding as well assuming you had it ordered from the factory. The other item you mentioned about the wiring for a strobe light, is that in all trucks or is that only part of the snow plow prep package as their is a comment about that on the GM website when looking at the snow plow prep package that also includes the stiffer front torsion bars which not everyone might want as I expect that would degrade the ride a bit if the truck never had a winch or snow plow added. In any event you probably can shed some light on it, if you have the plow prep and what if anything the dealer had to do in order to power up those switches.

    • @gregorystewart9523
      @gregorystewart9523 8 місяців тому +1

      @@charlesb4267 Yes, I have the LTZ trim package with the new style interior. And it is true that you need to finish the installation yourself. The switch assembly was installed from the factory, but I had to hook up the switch harness. That was disappointing, but the dealer gave me all the instructions on how to hook it up. However, I couldn't figure out what switch #5 was for. Learned on a UA-cam video that the 5th switch was prewired for a strobe light and that you gained access to wires either through the headliner or by removing the 3rd brake light assembly. You could also tap into that wire under the dash if you wanted to use it for something else. I don't have the plow prep package, so I just assumed that this strobe light wire is preinstalled on all trim levels. The upfitter switches work great though.

    • @charlesb4267
      @charlesb4267 8 місяців тому

      @@gregorystewart9523 Thank you for the answers and insight. So hooking up that harness, that must be quite something as don't various items have to be pulled apart on the dash or console to route the harness through the firewall, and once through it is there something special wired on the under hood fuse box to plug into or is this a stand alone harness with its own relays and fuses that connect to a power stud point and ground on or near the engine fuse box?. It seems finding information on how its set up to work is slim to none as any GM factory info I have come across online talks about the older upfitter switch kit that came with its own knee plate I will call it ( by your left knee at the bottom of the dash ). Good to know they ran a wire to the third brake light area and not only if one ordered the plow package. I wonder then if once the harness was installed that one of those switches could be used to power up a 12 volt socket although where to mount the socket would be the next issue. It would be nice if they put the option of ordering that on their website, how did you even know it existed to go about ordering that option through the dealer ?

      @gregorystewart9523 8 місяців тому +2

      @@charlesb4267 I ordered the truck last fall and don't remember for sure how I saw you could order the upfitter switches. I may have just saw it listed as an option when building my truck. I'm a fairly good mechanic and enjoy working on vehicles, so having to hook everything up wasn't that hard for me. It was more of an irritation that they didn't complete the installation at the factory. Yes, the upfitter switches could easily power a 12 volt socket. The harness comes with the relays already installed, and a fuse block. Everything just plugs in. The hardest thing is getting the wiring harness through the firewall. The hole and grommet are already there, the difficult part is reaching it if you're not very flexible. They definitely could have made it easier, but now that it is all hooked up, I am completely satisfied with it. Finding the right UA-cam videos helped a lot.

Very odd why GM is handling it this way and then in some cases its the dealership that gets the work to install it and charge back the customer, I came across one comment from a Canadian on a forum ( I am in Canada ) that his dealership was going to charge him 4 hours labour at around 200.00 an hour and I am guessing once one has gone through the motions and know the moves it won't take near that long.

    You hit on some pretty key factors when it comes to buying a new truck today. I had not bought a new truck since 2004 and that was a Chevy Z71 1500 that I let go in 2009 to buy my grandpa’s 2004 Ram with the 5.9 Cummins. I ran that truck for just over 12 years as our primary tow vehicle. We tow a 12,000 lb 5th wheel so nothing crazy. The old 5.9 pulled it wonderfully. But as you said, these new diesels and their emissions and extremely high price tags make you think about what is really necessary. More power but at a very high price and cost of ownership in comparison to the new Ford 7.3 gas engine. I ordered a 2022 F350 with the 3:73 gears and the FX4 in an XLT trim, crew cab and a short box. It’s a pretty basic truck with cloth interior compared to all these high trim levels available today. In the end though, the 7.3 gas with the 10 speed is just as capable of towing my 5th wheel 5 or 6 times a year for a lot less up front and much lower cost of maintenance. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t have a problem with owing a diesel, just not for me right now. Maybe if I ever get to retire and we full time RV for a few years, then a diesel may pay for itself in fuel savings. Oh and the 2022 F350 XLT has (2) 12 volt outlets accessible in the front seat as well as (1) in the back seat along with 110 v receptacles and USB A & C and it cost about $25,000 less than your Chevy test truck LOL. One thing you said around the 35:00 minute mark, you mentioned it turned sharp, I had a new 1978 Chevy heavy 1/2 ton (that's how they advertised it, 6200 GVW), that needed a half acre, that's how it felt to turn around, in northern Michigan on US 131 between South Boardman and Kalkaska, that road at that time was a wide 2 lane road with a gravel shoulder on each side, if I pulled the outside tire to the outside edge of the gravel at a stop, then turned the wheel left to it's lock, that vehicle could not turn around so it could go the direction that it just came from without driving off the edge of the gravel on the other side. Also that was a standard cab, not extended nor crew, but it was the eight foot box.

    To funny Casey! I have a 2021 GMC 3500HD, 6.6L gas, it has two 12V accessory ports and the Upfitter switch's that were an option. You are correct, I also hate when they remove little things like the accessory ports. I also very much dislike the lack of interior lighting since they went LED, you need a flashlight if you drop something on the floor at night. (Maybe they fixed that on the 2024 🙄.) Love your honest reviews!

    i find it so weird Chevy didn't have 12volt outlets and no blank switches for off-road light and other add ons

      Chevy has a kit to install Upfitter switches it replaces the dash panel under the steering wheel and gives you 6 switches. It is a dealer installed option only and cannot be installed at the factory. Nice thing about it is it can be installed in any truck any time and you don’t have to order it with them like you do with ram or fords

    A very comprehensive and detailed review. I'm sure that's what Chevy was looking for. You probably sold a few trucks for them.

    Casey good review on it, especially explaining why you would get gas version not diesel for a lighter duty use. Most of the diesel pickups where I live have been screwed up by the owners making them obnoxiously loud, sagging rear and other useless stuff. to the point the truck wouldn’t be able to be used as a truck.

    I give a huge thumbs up to chevy on the light test. Is commercial trucks tractor-trailers. The one thing the light test does not do is the turn signals. Just because the 4 ways work does not mean the left and right boy like they are supposed to. When I pre drop a tractor-trailer I walk around twice to check all the way. I have found turn signals wired backwards wired together.

    Too many comments to go through so sorry if it's already been mentioned but upfitter switches are a $150.00 option on Chevys website. I believe they are either dealer or self installed. Nice review of a very nice truck!
