Just like to make a few corrections for you, as a Cumbria resident.
The town of Windermere isn’t on ‘Lake Windermere’ it’s actually a couple miles away...
‘Lake Windermere’ is actually called Windermere as it is a mere not a lake...
The deepest ‘lake’ in the lakes is actually Wastwater (it’s 240-odd feet deep)...
And the only lake in The Lake District is actually Bassenthwaite Lake.
Windermere is however, the longest ‘lake’ in the Lake District.
All the being said, I do enjoy your videos, keep it up!!

  • @DarrenRobinsonofearth
    @DarrenRobinsonofearth 9 років тому +4

Very nice work, and nice to see my home county presented so well. One correction, the lake is simply called "Windermere", as "mere" means "lake" - it comes from old Norse, "windy lake". There is one body of water in the Lake District with the word "lake" in its name, and that is Bassenthwaite Lake, in the north-west. Everything else is a mere, water or tarn - the small lake at the northern end of the pass is Brotherswater.

I’m riding the Kirkstone Pass in a few weeks for the first time, so really enjoyed your video, thank you. Glad to see you took it at a nice, steady pace. No need for heroics, as you say, enjoy the scenery and let the sports bike riders with their balls of steel overtake if they want to!

Wow such an good, informative video. I lived in Coniston (about 7 miles from Kirkstone Pass ) for 25 years and seeing this just brings all the memories of this lovely area. During this time I had a Yamaha Fs1E (50cc) which struggled up the pass on many occasion !! I was 16 when I managed to get a pint and chicken and chips in the basket at the Inn.................
Thank you for recording this, and then spending time with the editing.
I see there is a Yorkshire Dales Video (where I have also lived for the last 30 years)
    On to that now.

Another great video, albeit an older one. I'm picking my way through the ones I fancy watching first before viewing the rest, and due to the current weather and time of year, I thought I'd watch this one to improve my mood and lessen the January blues!! Anyway, we spend New Year in a little village called Far Sawrey, near Hawkshead and we came home via the Kirkstone Pass on the 2nd January, and were disappointed to find the Inn looking very much closed, as in properly closed and not just for the day. Very sad if that's the case, and happening to far too many of these lovely authentic pubs.

Fantastic run - We obviously ride very similar - just a suggestion if your up in Scotland. The A84 up past Lochearnhead onwards to the turn off to Killin on the A827. The smiddy on the corner is a great lunch. Follow A827 up to Kenmore and Aberfeldy then turning on the A826 to Milton onwards on the A822 through Newton and back down to the A85 near Crief. Great road, fantastic views. Did it on my Harley a few weeks ago and it was great.

Looking on from Bowness, Behind the main island, and between the little ones, rest the ashes of my parents in lake Windermere.. It was the best time of their life when they lived there (I was born in Ulverston, where my parents lived). WIndermere was also my mother's favorite lake. My father was one of the scuba crew in 1967 in search of remains of Campbell in Coniston water.
I've done all the passes in the lakes, and Hardknott in particular, multiple times on my Honda Transalp. I NEVER need first gear other than pulling away, but the switchbacks on Hardknott are the only ones making me actually need first gear while riding. Love to belt up them, with the front wheel just skimming over the road :)

Have my three week old Triumph tiger explorer sat in the garage, have had torrential rain most of today and a powercut, so I also missed the F1 from Spa, this has at least given me a bit of a biking fix and thoughts of trips to look forward too.
Guessing you're still really enjoying the GS, any thoughts now your further into your relationship would be interesting.
Ride safe and thanks for sharing the excellent video.

I know you only briefly mentioned it, but I have been there when it was proper snowy. I'm talking 2-3 feet of snow. The field by the inn is really good for sledging so we took my dads Kia sorento and I can tell you that that was the first (and probably only) time he used all the fancy 4x4 gizmos.

I don't know if anyone else has already corrected you, but the only lake in the Lake District is actually Bassenthwaite Lake.
Windermere is a mere - hence the name.
They are mostly meres and waters up there, only 1 actual 'lake', but I think it has the highest proportion of inland water compared to land - but I'll have to check that after work :)

I drove that pass (in a car)about a month ago after all the rain. It was like a river and pretty heavily damaged. There was large gravel and what I assume was aggregate from building the road that had been washed onto the road surface. Also, isn't it Lake Bassenthwaite that's a lake and Windermere is a mere?

    • @TheMissendenFlyer

Lake Windermere is just called Windermere, it's a common mistake. There are only a few lakes in the Lake District that have Lake in their name, more usually Water, Mere or Tarn. Bassenthwaite Lake is probably one of the only lakes in the Lake District to have lake in the name . Interestingly, or not, although Windermere is England's deepest lake the mere part in Windermere means a body of water that is wide but shallow for it's size. The name mere comes from the Old English meaning "sea lake", but Windermere is a fresh water lake. Figure that one out.

I know what you mean about being careful on these roads. And the uppy n downy continuum. Big lake, Lake Tahoe! Remember being on there in a powerboat and after an hour of whizzing around, struggling to find the place where I'd hired it from at the lakeside. Doesn't sound possible but it was. Of course, no radar, ILS, ADF or GPS to help. Stayed in Tahoe City. A nice, if a little spooky, kinda place. :-) As you say parts of it looks very similar.

The Deepest lake in England is Wass water, Windermere is the longest. Loch Ness is the deepest 'lake' in the UK

+JLO Staff Well I struggle but my eyesight isn't very good, you can get round it by using the GPS as an instrument binnacle (part of the reason I love the NAV V) - certainly not a significant enough issue to be a deal breaker in my view. Best to try one and see how you get on??

stayed at a campsite on the road last night, had a good drive around, didn't realise it was the same spot on this video till was riding about. Also went down the 'struggle' into windermere. That was an experience haha.

+TheMissendenFlyer very much so, haha. Was just popping to windermere for petrol and the gps took me down it and I was little prepared for the road, and the wandering sheep.

The lake is not Britains largest or deepest, suggest you look to loch morar as the deepest, lomand has a bigger surface area. Loch Ness holds more water than all the lakes in England and Wales combined. It is England's largest though. Try the bike roads up in Scotland, though I'm not sure they are better than this.

Driving around in France bikers wave at each other, then again being on the opposite side of the road means we don't have to let go of the throttle to do so ;)

Yes we had to find a hotel, ended up in Killington lake services where they have a premier Inn. The Scenery in your vid was a bit better than when we were there as the weather was a bit iffy.
