Carlos Monzon: Monument To A Monster

- Carlos Monzon was arguably the greatest middleweight to ever live and went unbeaten for over a decade. He was made a national hero by a nation desperately in need of one. But his personal life was just as violent as his title defenses.

"Nino fought his heart out, Carlos never had one so he took it" BARS LOL
I checked his record. Monzon had a total of 100 fights of which 3 of those were points losses with 9 draws and 1 no contest. He removed any controversy by avenging all of them either by decision or ko. Remarkable!
Richard Harrison
He clearly lost to Emile Griffith in that rematch.
@@jessiejames2937 Crap .
@@jessiejames2937 You're kidding, right? Griffith won 2-3 rounds off Monzon in their rematch. No way did he come even close to winning.
It's also important to note that his 3 losses were at a very early stage of his career and against below average opponents. He also avenged all of those defeats.
We could say that he was virtually undefeatable
while those 3 loses came at the beginning of his professional career
IMPRESSIVE!!!!!
"The ref was more lenient than the Tower of Pisa" got a good chuckle out of me.
'Benvenuti fought his heart out for the fans; Monzon never had one in the first place.' Oh come on, that's way too good. Monzon had the same background and ring mentality as Roberto Duran. Hungry and hateful. RFGA, Ph.D.
He's got some amazing one liners
Most boxers have a mean side to them, that is displayed when they fight, but they also tend to exaggerate it, talk tough, and play up to an image,, but with Monzon it was 100 percent genuine. He seemed possessed of a cold, relentless , heartless fury in the ring.
And outside which I'm afraid made him a phycho
@@patprr1756 True.
That Benevuti he beat twice slapped he’s ass at a weigh in Monzon told him in front of everyone that tonight he will kill him in the ring
Difference with him is he meant it he could walk as good as he talked
Indeed, he was a psycho. Many people here in Argentina have covered his life throughout his career and proved he was a very dangerous man. For instance, he was very violent with his partners and hit all of them. We're talking about women who couldn't defend themselves against him
Unlike Roberto Duran who atleast was good outside despite being an larty animal, carlos,he did some good things but his evil things are real.
My boxing teacher was Monzons sparring partner and friend, I can see the style that I learned from him. All about the jab and countering, not many combination, it's a profound sticking to the basics and precision over volume. My teacher had a broken jaw which he considered a "gift" from Carlos. Sadly he was a monster outside the ring. Amazing video. Cheers from Argentina.
That’s a cool story man. Bet your teacher was a hoss himself.
Very pure fighter. Natural instincts, wrinkles to his game. Checks all boxes: jab counter punch, footwork, defence. Power toughness, smarts.
I grew up reading about the great Carlos Monzon from The Ring magazine, as a teenager back in the early 1980s.
UA-cam didn't exist during that period. Watching this video gives me the proper perspective on this boxing genius and assassin!
What an incredible talent, and destroyer!
This man is one of the greatest fighters that I've ever seen!
What a tragic story towards the end of his life.
@nat turner
You're sadly mistaken! I've been a student of the sport for the majority of my life, and upon studying this footage, I think that this dude had phenomenal skills as a fighter!
His punching power was deadly!
I agree that Hagler would have beaten him, however, Hagler was exceptional.
There's a reason why Monzon was considered an all-time legend by the Bible of boxing called: The Ring magazine.
By the way, no one is above getting their asses kicked! Man, woman, or child, for that matter.
And Monzon was a warrior that stepped in the ring and caused major damage to plenty of men!
I don't condone the physical abuse of anybody or anything personally.
And of course, murder is completely wrong. Monzon will pay for that.
@nat turner
Don't take my word for it.
Read some books written by the experts and fighters!
@nat turner
I like the name Nat Turner by the way.
I'm Haitian American, my heroes are Toussaint Louverture and Jean-Jacques Dessalines.
First of all, I wouldn't refer to any MAN that would put on a pair of gloves, and step into the ring and battle like a true gladiator, as a bum!
Show some respect. That shit takes fuckin' heart!
Fine. Listening to experts is beneath you. I believe that you can learn from these teachers of the game. I'm just a student and observer of the sport.
Monzon knocked out the great Hall of Famer, Jose Napoles. An incredible boxer/ puncher. That's very impressive, if you want talk about credible opponents to have on your resume.
Carlos Monzon is in the HALL OF FAME and is considered one of the best in the history of the sport by RING MAGAZINE.
I agree that Roy Jones Jr. Could have beaten him as well. So would Suger Ray Robinson.
However, I'll never forget when I underestimated Roberto Duran in 1980 against Suger Ray Leonard.
Duran won! And I became his fan after.
@nat turner
Yo, Nat!
I'm not gonna front, the Black man is God in the Ring period!
Back in the early 20th century, the establishment banned Black men from fighting white men for the world championships because they feared us.
Growing up in the 1970s thru the 1990s,
We ruled in EVERY weight class that we fought in.
Today, it's shameful and disappointing to see how that dominance has changed.
There still are a few future Hall of Fame
Candidates fighting today, but Deontay Wilder was a huge embarrassment!
This Tyson Fury dude would have been another Gerry Cooney back in the 80s and 90s!
@nat turner The montreal version of Duran was a beast. Only man to beat Sugar Ray in his prime as far as I can remember. It was also a stupid decision made by Leonard to brawl with Duran. But it was a very close fight (except for the first five rounds or so, they were kind off Duran‘s rounds)
One of the most infamous men in boxing and one of the most beloved depending on who you ask. Dude was crazy
The greatest middle we of all time
This is a bar!
I don't judge people for their sins. I'm not God. But what I will say is, I will always consider Carlos Monzón to be the greatest boxer of all times.
infamous for fools. The people who love boxing respect him as a great champion

Carlos Monzon’s right hand was one of the best in middleweight history.
An incredible fighter whose nickname described not only his boxing, but arguably his entire life... 'Escopeta'... Shotgun.
Well said man a few shells were in a escopeta shotgun.. And oh my god...
There was a picture of Monzon holding a ACTUAL ESCOPETA SHOTGUN and aiming it towards a poster promoting Monzon vs Benvenuti and Monzon was aiming at benevenuti in the fght poster....
It really seems that Monzon will kill inring for the sport.
One of the greatest middleweights of all time
Carlos is the prime example of when to separate "the art from the artist"
So is Edwin Valero
I've been saying this phrase for years. Absolutely right. You can appreciate the art without lovin the artist
@B45 I think Tyson has grown a lot (unless you talk about Fury)
@B45 It is true that he is a bit controversial. The reason why I like Mike Tyson is his brutal honesty (and the fact that he isn‘t the same person that he was 20 or 30 years ago). His life stories will always be fascinating and something to learn from. I believe that he has learned from his lessons. He isn‘t Jesus but I think you get the point
@B45 yea Mike Tyson certainly grew up, he said it himself that he was very stupid before and regrets many things he did in his past.
What an awesome episode.
Very well done.
This channel is fantastic.
My grandfather said Carlos Monzon was the greatest MW but my dad and all my uncles say Marvin Hagler was the greatest MW and before I forget me and my brother and cousins all think Bernard Hopkins is the the greatest MW so yea things get testy at family functions lol
That would of been the dream match up
and all of them say the truth!
Hagler would of grounded his ass down and knocked him out cold 🥶. B-Hop would of took him to school on technique before putting him away late
Monzon NEVER let a welterweight who NEVER had a single MW fight and who had only fought ONCE in 5 years take him the distance. That, was a disgrace to middleweights everywhere. Oh sure we can argue all day if Leonard won or not. But Larry Merchant said it best, right during the middle of the fight between Hagler&Leonard when he said: "Leonard is winning this fight because he is not losing it". Bingo. Monzon defended his title against a welterweight once, only he was the current welterweight champ Jose Napoles, not some guy who'd retired 5 years earlier. Monzon did what a great middleweight is suppose to do to a welterweight. Out in Seven. I think Monzon had early dinner reservations or something that night.
A lot of peoples dream match. Hagler wins it imo. My dream matchup is Hagler vs GGG
The greatest middle weight in history
No way. Overrated like sh*t.
Absolutely phenomenal video. Thank you as always for your consistency and what you do for boxing and it’s long history.
One of my favorite Middleweight Boxers
Him, Harry Greb, Marvelous Hagler & Sugar Ray Robinson
Best middleweight ever. Unfortunately, he didn't get the exposure in the US which he should having fought mostly in Europe and Argentina . Had he fought in the US he would be universally recognised as the best middleweight ever.
Wow! 🤩Thank you for your massive effort.
Monzon was made of oak. It was impossible to hurt him. The guy barely needed to train, and being a heavy smoker, had the stamina to fight 20 rounds with anybody. Thou he was violent with his women (let's face it: he never dated anyone with an inch of brain, most of his GF were just plain dumb good looking faces, and Monzon was a guy with no social skills, if you mess up with him, you better get a life insurance), he was extremely respectful of those who helped him, and you can see he respected a lot his coach, because he was an A+ student in the ring, doing exactly as he was trained and told in order to win his fights.
All boxers who faced him, admitted his weakest punch made you shake like if a train hit you in the face. Monzon was so strong, he didn't needed to throw 20 punches to cause damage, just by hitting you 3 or 4 times per round, it felt like a waterfall of punches on your face. One of his fellow countrymen admitted he quit a fight because after a couple of rounds Monzon was literally breaking his skull apart just with pure jabs, he felt a power cross would have sent him to the grave. It literally felt you were punching a wall made of bricks who kept falling on you.
The guy was a surgeon. He throws 10 punches, 9 will connect, and out of those, 5 will cause serious damage, so imagine how it felt to face him. You thrown all you got, barely caused any damage on him, and then he shakes your whole basement with 3 punches.....
As for why Monzons fist were so freaking hard as MW... He had literal manos de piedra in his gloves after medicating them because they were brittle af.... And after that he was freaking unstoppable..
Or that what was the medias open secret about monzons power.
We can never truly know about it..
Carlos Monzon, a tough as nails champion who had no real weaknesses in his game. 4th on my list of greatest middleweight's all time. The person? That was well covered throughout this video. Moving on...
These fighter's matter, the bout's matter, their stories matter. The thought and effort that goes into these videos is obvious each time. Thanks Rhythm Boxing, and keep at it💪
Ripped. Chain smoker but always in shape
Howd he lose to 2 South American tomato cans?
@@TheBoxingRealmu clearly don't know shit about boxing, he has 100 bouts, he lost very few of those, but losses happen, that's what we call an "upset"
This narrator is perfect for this type of documentary
Thank you for the Christmas gift my man. Well appreciated 🙏
I heard several people who knew him, including one of the greatest TV personalities of Argentina who had an affair with him (Susana Gimenez) to say he was gentle and quiet until he began drinking. He got vicious when he was drunk. Not an excuse anyway but it shows what an addiction can do to a person and those around him.
Susana ??????👎👎👎
Alcholol and Brain damage DONT MIX WELL AT ALL!! Like holy crap why didnt anyone tell him to defeat his demons...
Alcohol, Indians, Warpath, it's not a rumor...
First Locche and now Monzon, i just want to say thank you sr, for show boxers from my country to the world, especially the ones that time make their names forgotten, but not their legacy though. Monzon life was signed by violence, and with violence it ended, an all great champion, yet a horrible man in many other ways.
Just in time for Christmas and a guaranteed instant classic.
Yo lo conoci cuando tenia 12 años, hasta el dia de hoy recuerdo su imagen...impactante !!
"A monster in real life an assassin in the ring" best definitión of him.
Here's a good piece of advice, before judging other, look at yourself in the mirror. Unless you are God.
@@Augalv The law found him guilty of murdering his wife, how does that look like to you? so i'm not judging, not my job, great boxer, as an argentine i admired him he was one of the best, but he was a killer, so tell me, are you in favor of killing a person in real life? take a look at your mirror.

I love Nino kicking the towel out of the ring like that takes it back.
Carlos has a underrated Shovel Hook/Uppercuts very versatile with them
My favourit MW - smart, crafty, powerful, rangy, accurate, iron-chinned and incredibly durable - he had one of the best jab/cross right combination in history . My 1st choice at 160 - I think he should be in every serious top 3
Carlos monzon él mejor boxeador del mundo de Argentina
Great overview and summation of Monzon sir! Purely from an in-ring talent and place in boxing history perspective there is no denying the man. He used his elite talent, deep personal drive, and insane passion to accomplish a truly great career in the ring and carve a prominent and utterly indelible place in boxing history for himself. That said though, his personality and character traits (which were undeniably a part of what made him special as a fighter) led to him making decisions and taking actions outside of the ring that make him impossible to support overall as a human being. You certainly have to give the man his due as a fighter, but it's completely wrong to remember him as anything other than a real life villain overall.
Thankfully the nation of Argentina has a whole list of great and historically significant champions to lift up and remember in a positive light. Battle tested two division champion and near ageless ironman Omar Narvaez, the insanely gifted Sergio Martinez, one of the great characters and utterly unique talents in boxing history Niccolino Locche, and the immortal legend and first Argentine world champion Pascual Perez all come immediately to mind!

Victor galindez....
Victor Emilio Galindez ? Eduardo Lausse ? .. One of the Greatest Light Heavy Weight ever , and One of the Best MiddleWeight Challenger from the 1950's ( Kid Gavilan and Gene Fullmer included in his record )
@B45 Monzon did beat solid local opposition in Argentina though : Jorge Fernandez who did fought Griffith , and Andres Selpa who fought Bob Foster and beat Eduardo Lausse ( who was a very strong Middleweight Challenger durung the 1950's as he beat both Kid Gavilan and Gene Fullmer ) ... you cannot beat Andres Selpa who was a very strong Journeyman if you are not very solid ... Monzon did beat very good opposition in his country before being given the chance at a title shot, he had more fights than Hagler in order to obtain a chance if i am not mistaken, avenged his only 3 losses and beat solid opposition once at the Top .. Monzon did with what his Era had to offer him and he did beat them multiple times with 100 bouts in total .. Carlos deserves way more recognition and respect. He did destroy Napoles the way a Bigger man should : nobody forced Napoles to move up : he was a natural WW while Monzol was big fir his Era ( nowadays he would not, you have guys such as the Charlo Brothers at 160 lb and 154lb ! And years ago someone like Hurd was fighting at 154lb .. do not forget Monzon did not do rehydratation clause either ... )
His personal life aside Monzon was pound for pound one of the greatest fighters to ever lace on a pair of gloves. He's on the list with Roberto Duran, Salvador Sanchez, Julio Cesar Chavez, Mohammad Ali, Sugar Ray Leonard, Thomas Hearns, Marvin Hagler, to name a few of the best ever.
Great video, thank you so much for your outstanding work! I love to hear about boxers I haven't heard of, and such an accomplished (n yep, mean) one
Another example of a woman being attracted to a known violent man and then people are going to act shocked this happened and put no blame on the poor choice she made to date a known violent man
MONZON was a monster in and out of the ring
He was an ATG and a legend 100 fights 3 losses and an 88 fight unbeaten streak
14 successful defences of his undisputed MW title in about 6yrs
i trully believe only 2 other boxers in MW history may have beaten him
SRR & HAGLER & thats only a maybe he has the record for successful defences in the MW division ever but outside the boxing ring he was also a monster he couldnt seperate the 2
He's is so underrated. It's unbelievable that modern day boxers, retro boxers, news outlets, or even Joe Rogan has never even spoken about him, or very little at most.
14:09 man full on went in for a kiss with the ref like it was him who decided the fight lmao
" More volatile than a Molotov ".....this narrator is great.
There’s no denying Monzon talent in the ring-very intelligent, accurate, durable,-pretty much unbeatable during his reign. It’s unfortunate that he was such a savage outside the ring too.
it always amazes me how he is never mentioned in the same league as Hagler,Leonard,Hearns, jones etc, alot of people point out that he never holds his hands up,hes gangly and awkward but hey he never lost,
Interesting to think how he’d have done against them.
Suspect he’d have given Leonard all sorts of problems, like Hearns did, but would have brought it home.
Hearns himself would have been curious. I think it was Emmanuel Stewart who said, the guys who gave Hearns trouble were the brawlers. Might his style have played to Hearns’ strength?
Against Hagler, that would have been very interesting… I suspect that Marvin’s condition and iron chin might have been enough
Although a horrible man, can't deny his boxing ability. Loved this video, and some of the funny sayings, thanks.
This is educational history in the making for me, bcuz alot of these boxers I didn't know anything about.

Carlos never lost the title in the ring.
It's a shame Hagler and Monzon didn't peak at the same time, that would have been a hell of a fight.
Shades of Lamotta vs Robinson except its Upgraded with more technique and talent than ever before.
Hagler was too green when Monzon was winding down. Monzon had a open contract in 77 few middleweights wanted that smoke . Valdez Who fought at welterweight and middleweight and is one of greatest fighters took his last fight one for books! This was thier second fight. Valdez would go on to win undisputed middleweight title after Monzon retired. Valdez was one of greatest fighters in his own right coming in at 27 all time. For a comparison Roy Jones was 17. A lot of great middleweights the deepest division in all land so much fighters like hearns and Leonard are not ranked in top 50 why? They didn’t have enough fights at middleweight Valdez was ranked highly at both welterweight and middleweight. He was simply one of best fighters. But Carlos was the top middleweight and ended his career on a 81 fight undefeated streak that spanned years 1966-1977. Retired as champion.
You are right. If Monzón was five years younger and Hagler five years older. We probably missed the Fight of the Year in 1980.
Dentro al ring il re l'imperatore il faraone lo zar era lui Carlos Monzon
Carlos suffers from chronic injuries to the bones of his hands and had to fight in this way with his fragile or injured bones, due to the calcium deficiency caused since his childhood by suffering from rickets and malnutrition. And I correct that he not only had our Argentine people as bearers of his gift, but also Nino Benvenutti and Emilie Griffith himself.
Henry armstrong next!!

Hagler would have been too green Valdez us a top 49 middleweight of all time and a top ten welterweight all time Valdez is a two time middleweight champion he also won title Monzon retired with. Remember both hagler and germs were far too young to have fought. When Monzon had an open contract in 77 hearns was 17 hagler axfewxyearscoldercmonzon would have killed both of them. *Fun story about Monzón:
His trainer actually knew him from a bar alot of boxers, construction workers and sailors went to, basicly people beat the ever loving sht out of each other on a daily basis, and one night Monzón lost some money playing a card game called "truco" or trick...and i guess he wasn´t too happy about it bcause acording to his trainer he beat the guy that took his money, and his 2 friends...at the same time...after seeying this he was like "yeah i think he could be a great boxer" and i mean lets be honest, Monzón´s style was simple, medium guard, relaxed, one two simple combinations, but the thing is if he catches you with that right hand, he can do some DAMAGE...
* When he fought "mantequilla" Napoles from Cuba, the great Anjelo Dundee called the fight off saying and i quote "kid, he´s trying to kill you..."
* A trully violent, big and strong human being...unfortunate combination.
Nino Benvenutti lo dijo ...si no puedo ganarle yo , nadie podrá ! estaba en lo cierto .

He got 11 years for killing a person. That’s terrible. It seems like no one held him accountable for his actions from the beginning.

The narrator seems hell bent on demonizing Monzon throughout, issuing such absurd comments as Monzon's "dictatorial reign" as Middleweight champion (9:14). In what way could he possibly have been a "dictator" as a boxing champion? He also mischaracterizes several fights -- e.g., Monzon was not "on the floor" in Valdez II, but dropped down and stopped his fall with both gloves, rising instantly after an absolute bomb from the hard-punching Rodrigo. Nor was the unanimous decision in any doubt, and Carlos had been talking about retirement for several years, intending a bigger career in the movies.
The narrator's non-stop trashing results in a crude caricature of a figure far more complicated than is being presented. Monzon grew up dirt-poor, quit school early due to economic hardship in his family, and was a street-fighter in an overwhelmingly "machismo" culture. His chain-smoking, alcoholism, and drug use are in all likelihood indicators of self-medication for a deeply troubled and possibly "wounded" personality. He had indigenous ancestry -- from the Mocovi or moqoit nomad group of the Guaycuru peoples -- and probably experienced the racism typical of the time and place. Largely illiterate, Carlos navigated life with the only resources he could count on: physical force and fearlessness. Did he murder his second wife in a fit of drunken rage, yes. Does he have a record of physical violence and domestic abuse, yes (though it might be worth noting that at least he didn't act like a savage "monster" and murder his first wife after she deliberately shot him the leg in 1973). But was he a man devoid of any human good or decency, as the "monster" label stigmatizes? How many of us here watching this video could honestly say that they would have lived lives less troubled and violent had they been dealt the same hand of cards that Fate bestowed upon Carlos Roque Monzón, on the 7th of August, 1942?
