I'm guessing they did it cause it's now "Why I no longer use Custom Android ROMs" I think they are a MUST for POCO or Xiaomi, or any Chinese phone that comes with million apps preinstalled (and still have nuances even after debloated stock ROM)
8:25 that is the main issue for a lot of us - we grew old, and settle for stuff that's good enough that lets us do what we need, or have enough money to buy new things we want. I used to be a rooting and Stock Android fan, now I just settle with a Samsung A-series phone and be done with it.
This. I used to customize everything with my computer or phone when I was younger. Now I just leave it all at default. Change stuff a bit from time to time but nothing major. It becomes to much of hassle to customize your device especially when it’s time to replace it. That’s what i appreciate about iphones, it’s decent looking, no need for major customization. And more importantly continuity and familiarity.
@@neilfordan the good thing is that modern devices are generally better about keeping and exporting your settings and preferences. Outside of banking and encrypted chat backups, didn't even need to re-login for most stuff when I switched from A14 to A55. On the other side, Linux's xdg folders make it so easy to backup and restore most of your stuff, be it manually, with an app, or with chezmoi or nix home-manager. It's really is just Windows that remains annoying for me.
I was a flashholic. Can't even name those rom. It all started from my Samsung galaxy tab 2 later OG Oneplus one. I used to change roms almost every 2 days. I had a free time then. Now I have job and can't put so much effort I backup, restore, fixing bugs. Also I'm from India and we depend on online payments and root is big nono for them. Yes I can do safety check but where's the time. I guess I'm grown. Do I miss those days? Yes, absolutely. I wish I can go back and get those free time to tinkering
Nope.. UPI apps work with no issues if you configure it correctly, Or better, many roms/kernels now come with KSU support, which is by far the closest to root permission on Linux, and raise no issues, and 0 setup needed.
@@SreejithKSGupta Thing is, back then phones weren't that integrated to our everyday lives. So tinkering with a daily driver didn't affect much. Now the smartphone is literally an extension of you, so tinkering, even if it works has a larger risk involved. 2:21 I mean, you could just use Universal Android Debloater. Or even just manually get rid of it using ADB or ya know, disabling the apps 6:40 people usually use CRs because their phone can't update anymore. Me personally, I just used customroms so I could get the latest Android version. I used a OneUI port on my Note 9 so I don't lose the stock camera quality, and everything else that is good about OneUI. Honestly, I kinda miss the Bixby button. Because you could mod it into a pause and play button
2014-15 was the best time for it. Nowadays, manufacturers have locked down their hardware so far down. I see it as a form of tyranny. If you try these things now, you have a higher chance of not getting it done, and highly risk it getting bricked even if you follow exact instructions
Basically because Google Pixel exists, we who got used to stock vanilla android don't have many options to go to. And Google Pixel phones offer little in value in other countries where they are either not supported or super expensive. And no it's not dead because for us who use affordable chinese phones, custom roms provide a lot of value
Debloating the stock ROM on Android is quite easy with ADB commands, so I think debloating shouldn't really be the main reason why are going through all that "hassle" of flashing custom ROM unless you want to degoogle you phone and use it without google services.
I was thinking of installing hyperOS to my redmi note10 pro but found lineageOS it made my note 10 pro really fast and responsive I don't think I want hyperOS anymore
I used to use Android Kitkat custom rom on my Galaxy S duos back in the day, which was running Touchwiz based on Android 4.2. It's waaay smoother and snappier than the official rom.
I recently sat down for 8 hours learning how to install custom ROMs and setting up Magisk Hide on my phone. The learning curve is indeed steep, but it's imo well worth the result. My OP7P was stuck on a broken version of Android 12. And ROMs has basically resurrected my phone. It's now faster and smoother than ever with the latest security patches being delivered OTA. And having learned how to install ROMs it only took me 45 minutes to switch from LineageOS to crDroid, which is awesome. Having options of what features you want on your system is awesome. There are indeed the occasional bugs, but the official OxygenOS updates from OP had even more bugs. Other than the steep learning curve in the beginning, I honestly see no problems with custom ROMs. I get more security updates than ever and my phone is much faster
i mainly use pixels only to run CalyxOS due to it using microG instead of the Google play services for more privacy and still a functional phone, the bootloader is re-lockable and also does it pass safetynet with Calyx, also does it get the pixel security updates.
Tried CalyxOS once but found that scanning qr codes for my banking apps was completely broken in microg, gave up at that point. Like the idea but end of the day I still have to use my phone.
Didn't you know that you can simply uninstall the pre-installed apps that you can't seem to uninstall with ADB? The device doesn't need to be rooted, you just need to connect it to the computer, have USB debugging enabled, go into the adb shell and run e.g. "pm uninstall --user 0 com.android.chrome" (this would uninstall Chrome but it works for all apps).
They are not completely uninstalled tho. They are just being removed from the app drawer but they still take up space. It’s essentially the same as if you‘d disable an app. After a phone reset those "uninstalled" apps are back.
@@20NBA01 they are uninstalled from the apps but the apks still hidden in the OSes, that why if you reset it will installed it back. the only real fix was, extract the OS and find the apks remove it combine it back which is pain in the arse.
Nah, you have it all backwards and wrong. It's not because people want customization. What they want is privacy. That's the main point of custom OS's. And if you want to dive more into that to see why, watch the recent clip *"Why the iPhone 16 Should Scare You Shitless"* by Rob Braxman and get your education upgrade for free.
Most are just simple normies with a 'I have nothing to hide' attitude. Pretty hard to get through their thick skull, but I have to keep trying as they're also part of the problem of becoming slowly a 1984 society.
I've started making android apps, they're going smoothly for now. I'm still testing but they're super simple, useful and everything is stored locally. Which means people have full control over the apps!
I had a custom rom on my early Sony phones, then LG g4, g6 and my current G8 is stock. I dont wanna go through the hassle again for a custom Rom to crash once a week like the previous phones.
iam using a used samsung s9 since 2020 with lineage os and had no stability issues at all. no resets, no app crashes. iam having android 13 now, and getting about 2 times a month ota updates. isnt that crazy with this rly old phone from 2018? the one plus 6 that i bought used was even able to run native linux. but thats not rly stable and usable, so i will get android 14 on it and sell it to some other user, which probably can use it even longer. this oneplus 6 is also from 2018 and very powerfull.
There's gonna be a time where most apps would implement strong play integrity to ban custom roms and rooting, or play integrity fix would ran out of device fingerprints to spoof and bypass apps
I still remember my first Android phone. In 2012, I installed a custom rom because the official rom had so many bugs. With a custom rom, my phone was more stable. Now I'm using a Pixel 8
Just recently revived two old phones of my parents, that jumped from Android 10 to 14. They are now great backup phones for us, so that if our fail, we can wait for repair or are not forced to rush and buy a new one.
Even though most phones have everything you need on the oem rom, I still find it enjoyable to install an os that wasn't made by the company that manufactured the phone. I just wish Samsung just didn't remove oem unlocking from their u.s. models.
You are too wrong sir....I think you are absolutely having very less experience presently on custom roms! Buy a Xiaomi and Experience custom rom...And there are a lot of Fantastic seamless experience 🙌❤️
I installed crDroid on the Pixel 5 and there are zero bugs. It took quite a bit of effort to get everything working, but it was totally worth it. I've had this phone for years and never wanted to bother with rooting because like you, I was happy with the OS, but now I have it all running I would never go back to stock Android.
also uninstalling (or disabling except if you mount system RW and manually delete the folder) it's very easy with a single adb command alternativly just use universal android debloater
Stock is fiiiine but having software updates several years after the manufacturer stops supporting it is very nice. Honestly updating is not a problem, if you're running an officially supported rom and some people do have OTAs in their roms even if they are not official. On my Oneplus 7 pro, I press update in settings, and then go into Magisk and press "flash to second slot" to not lose root, restart and its updated. One more step than stock but I won't need to buy a new phone to get Android 15 when it comes out. Also with root, I can automatically backup my entire app data to google drive with Swift backup, so now I dont have to worry if I lose my phone or it breaks, which isnt going to happen every day but it did happen once when my essential ph1 got shattered to bits and it was so nice to just restore my backup when i got my oneplus 7. I didnt have to login to all my apps again and I had all my data right there.
I feel like part of the appeal for custom ROMs still is getting rid of unremovable system bloat (LG's phones came to mind) or that have questionable software update support. If you bought a non-Google branded phone, you could put a custom ROM on it and get close to stock Android (Setting aside LineageOS's customizations). My problem with most Android phones until Google announced they'd do their own in-house SOCs and support them for 6-8 years (So about on-par with Apple), is that you had to sign a legal waiver forfeiting a warranty to even flash a custom ROM to get security updates (Cough cough, Motorola) and to use a recent version of Android, either because the phone manufacturer was too lazy to support a device (A motorola phone I bought instead of using a recent version of Android, used an older version with a hacky gesture navigation implementation) or because Qualcomm wouldn't let them. Part of that is the reason why I refuse to buy a flagship phone with a Qualcomm SOC. Switched from an iPhone 13 to a Pixel Fold after a few years of using Apple and being annoyed by a lot of restrictions and design choices, and outside of gaming performance, I'm already happier with the Pixel than any of the Androids ($150-300) I've had.
I just buy used. Currently using a $70 2018 Xperia that looks new. Looking to buy a S8 next as main backup . It would be a downgrade but still really want a Samsung flagship even he it's old.
I was too that guy in 2014-2017, once I got out into the real world I would much rather have a boring phone that works rather than a customizable phone that might leave me stranded because I didn't tweak it properly
6:06 idk if that was your case and if that's a feature from Android or Samsung, (i own a samsung) there is an option that periodically reboots the phone for optimization purposes (so it says), which for me were a pain cause the reboots were happening all the time while i was connected with hotspot to just get disconnected and have to wait like an idiot for it to reboot. I had no clue that this option existed and though that maybe my phone was crashing for no reason cause sure thing it wasn't overheating
The information in this video is shallow as a Custom rom allows you several feature like installing custom kernal, UI tweaks, spoofing android, get OTA updates, get updates faster than OEM's, reviving 7-10 year old phones. Custom roms are not about popularity or cool features, they're about usability
Samsung has most of those features in the beginning of the video like customizing the power button and changing the location of the clock, and turning on the flashlight with the power button
Using crDroid based on android 14 in my POCO F1, The phone was launched in 2018 and it's running same version of Android as my latest phone. Battery life is great and not having unnecessary google apps makes the phone run quite well.
I'm currently on a quest to de-google my life and installing a custom ROM is a big part of it as you can't get rid of Google Play Services, which you haven't mentioned. It's not only a huge privacy issue (do not confuse this term with security) as it pings your location every couple of seconds (yes, even if GPS, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are all off) and sends that data to Google BUT it also drains your battery like crazy.
I have been using a custom rom since 2014 as a daily driver. Even when i buy a phone, i change to a custom rom within a few days. Bootloader unlocking takes few days. That's all the time i need to switch to custom rom.
I used to be a huge custom android fan but i grew old and tired.. Just settled for a Samsung Galaxy S22 series for productivity, then Apple for social media needs.
I always saw them more of an option to give old device new life than to mod new ones. I mean, if you want to tweak your home screen, a custom launcher does the job. If you want to tweak quick settings, status bar and hardware buttons - well, don't buy a Pixel, lol.

And I hate to have so many options, that's why I love AOSP Android, specially LineageOS, which I can't use as my main phone basically doesn't have custom rom development unfortunately, and GSIs are not a option in my opinion, not for daily use at least 😅😅
As long as the vast majority of users don't have the tools nor the knownledge to customize even the last bit of the Android firmware, there's no way to prevent bloatware on any device.
I'm using a Moto G1 running Android 10 and that phone still rocks. Kinda crazy really how fluidy it is. And I guess that is the only time that it makes sense; to revive old phones that won't get updates anymore. Who knows 7 years from now I try something on my S20FE. But for now even my Moto G5S is still too new to be really worth it the possible amount of bugs and issues.
Launchers break recents animation if you use them without root, they've been broken since like android 10. Stable roms can still easily be found, I use Derpfest daily on my Xperia 1 V. As far as secrurity updates do, just don't install outdated roms ! Actually since you can keep updating your phone even when the manufacturers abandons it you get security updates for longer (and updates in general) Also my rom supports seemless update with a single button press, just like on stock roms, with just a reboot afterwards. It's all possible !
I'm glad windows on android devices was mentionned, that's still the coolest thing ever. I tried it on OnePlus 6, Poco X3 pro, and I still have a Xiaomi pad 5 that I use windows on for school On a tablet it's very nice, since you get to have a 120Hz touch screen and really good speaker, good battery life. I feel like every device should be open so that things like this are possible
Here's a lesson from this video: For thoese of you that like custom ROMS, look for any that follows your expectations & make sure atleast it's stil supported by the Custom ROM's developer & add extra features that come from 3rd-party Apps & APKs (that require root, no root or either one option if possible) or if any of you don't like any custom ROM, you just (probably) enjoy using your Android device's stock ROM & if you want to make your device's stock ROM better by adding extra features that you will use, consider downloading any 3rd-party app & APK (that requires root, no root or either 1 option if possible). So in short, choose wisley :)
As a person who prefers a ROM that has 0 bloatware. Well custom roms is always my bet especially on older phones. The best skins in my opinion out there is Samsung One UI and LG UX. I dont like the skins that looked like iOS because i am not a iOS fanboy lol. Maybe if those skins didnt came with bloatware or advertisments then i dont need the custom ROM. Heck yeah bloatware actually ruined the performance but the wort thing is ads everywhere. Thats why custom roms in my opinion runs smoother as always. Typing this using my LG V20 with a Custom ROM (Lighthouse OS) while the LightHouseOS stopped getting updates from its devs but many apps still support android 11 i just disliked Android 12 and newer due to its UI for most reasons. I actually compared it with the Stock OS and surprises the Custom OS runs smoother and faster on this device. It feels like its new again lol.
I have custom rom for my Realme 6 and have a better performance for daily or gaming. Before i do custom rom, i used the original one that's Realme Ui 2 and have many issues for daily usage and gaming. Such as lack for multitasking, nothing smooth for move apps to another apps, and smoetimes stuttering for gaming. Nowadyas, i decided to to some custom rom, now i use Arrow OS android 12 is just way smoother than the original one. Have a better performance, smoother for multitasking, and many customisation.
Although I haven't changed anything on my primary phone, I did however install pixel OS on my old phone from 2016. It has Android 14 with January security patch while my primary is on Android 12 march 23 security patch
Here is one thing i hate about custom roms. Each and every one of them supports limited number of smartphones so many aren't officially supported. Models supported are mostly flagships and premium and realisticaly 80% of people can't afford those.
Listen my story: I bought a new phone in 2020 called redmi note 11 pro, i researched a lot, one of my friends had note 10 pro and it was fine and also it was really good deal in my location. It was fine, it had miui13 it was beautiful, setting app was great , etc... Some annoying bugs was exists, first the volte didn't work i guss its my model that dont support it, The 3rd party services that i enable for apps stops randomly and i need to re enable them. Also that f*cking 10 sec slow down when you do something sensetive to phone is wild. Im programmer i know what im doing!!!! I said ok. Around 6 month later miui14 released it was also nice i upgraded to it, but all of the sudden there was a f*cking bug that if i reset my phone i stucks in boot, i needed to hard reset it multiple times to get it up and running. I looked at every article in web and i couldn't find a valid solution. I also said ok fine trust the process. Thay fixed it 5 month ago in new miui 14 update. I said ok im done i never update this phone it's in stable version and everything is fine, so i disabled updates and it was fine since last week. It randomly decided to update to hyperOS, Whyyyyyyy Bro whyyyy Its literally apple Its disgusting I hate using its top panel My old top panel layout is gone i was so used to it in last 2 years. Now also network issues come in. It don't go over 30Mb/s in WiFi. Like i get adsl speed on fiber optic 1Gb/s network :////// Why you idiots (Xiaomi) release such a shitty os and Force update it to anyone. Im just backing up my stuffs asap To choose what to do: 1. Reset factory to MIUI 13 2. Custom rom
The reason why phone companies don't update the old phone to newer feature updates that is supposed to be intended only for newer phones is because when an old phone whose capabilities only reached maximum at android 10 only and you introduce it to android 15 or 14 the phone will be unstable in cases of battery / performance etc. It won't be able to synch in with the new features because it's not designed to be. I myself have been using CR DROID a not very popular custom rom the phone I'm using can go on beyond android 14 but I chose a type of cr droid rom wherein android 10 will be its maxed-out update. It's true that I don't have / receive latest security patch but who needs those security patch if you know yourself where to find the right security apps and patches your mainframe board if you know what I'm talking about if not then it's fine because many android users nowadays think they already know deep if they successfully rooted a phone. No, you just scratch the tip of the iceberg. Anyway, the point is you don't need to be dependent on patches PROVIDED by the AUTHOR OF THOSE CUSTOM ROMS because all custom roms have the same security patches mostly google play store or google patches etc. I'm using this custom rom now for almost 2 decades now with no bugs and whatsoever PLUS it is very secured thanks to self-maintenance. You'll be shocked what my phone is lmao. By the way not being rude but your title is misleading, you say its done now in the end or middle of your video you love them lmao.
Been away from changing roms for years not until my old trusty redmi note 8 became really slow. decided to change it and now my old redmi is snappy again

8:25 that is the main issue for a lot of us - we grew old, and settle for stuff that's good enough that lets us do what we need, or have enough money to buy new things we want.
I used to be a rooting and Stock Android fan, now I just settle with a Samsung A-series phone and be done with it.
Sad but true
Nope.. UPI apps work with no issues if you configure it correctly,
Or better, many roms/kernels now come with KSU support, which is by far the closest to root permission on Linux, and raise no issues, and 0 setup needed.
@@SreejithKSGupta Thing is, back then phones weren't that integrated to our everyday lives. So tinkering with a daily driver didn't affect much. Now the smartphone is literally an extension of you, so tinkering, even if it works has a larger risk involved.

Yikes!
I'm running my 4th Galaxy Note 9 on Android oreo 8.1. Nothing happened. Up to date browser with ads blocked and nothing "exploded".
Also I use window7 for nostalgia with dns settings to block all the ads and bad sites again I'm not getting hacked or viruses.
The only bad thing about custom roms it that you know your device is gonna random reboot at some point.
Bro clearly never used MIUI before
i mainly use pixels only to run CalyxOS due to it using microG instead of the Google play services for more privacy and still a functional phone, the bootloader is re-lockable and also does it pass safetynet with Calyx, also does it get the pixel security updates.

Nah, you have it all backwards and wrong. It's not because people want customization. What they want is privacy. That's the main point of custom OS's.
Some of the features mentioned in the beginning like battery icon styles were available in MiUI and are still available in HyperOS.
There's gonna be a time where most apps would implement strong play integrity to ban custom roms and rooting, or play integrity fix would ran out of device fingerprints to spoof and bypass apps

You forgot to mention it takes up less storage space in the system category when you don’t have all that bloat
Even though most phones have everything you need on the oem rom, I still find it enjoyable to install an os that wasn't made by the company that manufactured the phone. I just wish Samsung just didn't remove oem unlocking from their u.s. models.
That's not true, I'm now using CrDroid and I have no Play Integrity problems.

I installed crDroid on the Pixel 5 and there are zero bugs. It took quite a bit of effort to get everything working, but it was totally worth it. I've had this phone for years and never wanted to bother with rooting because like you, I was happy with the OS, but now I have it all running I would never go back to stock Android.

exactly!!! i use this method as well and its really easy, instead of rooting your phone and install a whole os.
Looking to buy a S8 next as main backup
. It would be a downgrade but still really want a Samsung flagship even he it's old.
Bought a phone and installed custom ROM in less than three months
Right, so how much money were you paid by the OEMs?
Sounds like a google shill.
LineageOS and other custom rom are perfect for older phones. For newer phones, it's perfect for security.
Good official custom rooms usually only has 1 or 2 minor bugs if any.

It's not only a huge privacy issue (do not confuse this term with security) as it pings your location every couple of seconds (yes, even if GPS, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are all off) and sends that data to Google BUT it also drains your battery like crazy.

the problem with rooting is you have to unlock your bootloader, unless you run grapheneOS on a pixel phone.

The reason i don't use cusrom anymore is because mostly cusroms are so few, especially on certain phone. I used Samsung s21 fe there are so few of roms, then some brand just don't share their source code
