As an Esperantist, and someone who has completed the US Army's interrogation course, I'm laughing twice as hard. I will say though that the Army's Agressor Dictionary is a pretty useful esperanta vortaro.
This represents what Esperanto was in that time: the enemy for the capitalist system and the enemy for the communist system too. Communist thought that all the esperantist were secret agents of capitalism and vice versa. Interesting picture! jejeje! :)
I was thinking they did it for practical purposes: it already exists, it's (by design) easy (and therefore fast) to learn, but very few people already know it, so it sounds and effectively is sufficiently foreign to serve the purpose. (Similar to how _The Painted Bird,_ a movie about a Jewish kid trying to survive in a war-torn, violently anti-Semitic Eastern Europe, used Interslavic-that way you don't have to pin your "bad guy" role one country in particular.) Granted, that pronunciation is abominable, so whether it's Esperanto remains an open question.

There is supposed to be a certain way that the words and letters are pronounced, and I believe that they did not learn that properly. Since Esperanto is based on Romance languages, it is supposed to be spoken like one, specifically like Italian.
For example, they mispronounce the plural "j" and say it like the sound of English "j" or "g" like in "giraffe" instead of pronouncing more like a "y" or an "i" like in "hi." So, like something like "kaj" which should be pronounced with the "k" sound with the ending of a sound like the word "eye," so like "k eye" would be pronounced with an English j sound.
