I really like the novel "Indoors Micael" and "Outdoors Micael" shtick! Well done video and great images!!
I use this setup plus 52mm of extension tubes. I made my own flocking for the tubes to prevent contrast lost and light spots, which I've found to be a problem when using a lot of m43 tubes. This gets me enough magnification for slime molds.
Thanks Micael for update.
Good idea and wonderful results! Something I can have a go at
Beautiful shots.
The Olympus 30mm and the Raynox 250 is what I use. It's a really good combination.
Fin kombination som ger dig ett bra resultat och är mera affordable :)
I love indoors outrs micael
Nice setup! Do you think if I also can add Raynox DCR 250 to my setup? (Canon EF-S 60mm Macro and M50.) It would be good to try once.
Yes, would work well I think. You would probably also get around 1.65x magnification.
Would be interesting to compare the adapter against cropping and then up-res with Adobe and/or Topaz tools. Sometimes these inexpensive filters cost so much resolution they the up-res options are as good or better.
I would definitely say that you get more resolution with this setup than with only the lens. The difference is clear, as the raynox is so perfectly sharp. AI tools would be a layer on top of that, but the better the input, the better the end result.
An added extension tube would likely give you 2x magnification, but at further loss of working distance and a the need to add a notch of flash power.
I have used a teleconverter, then extension tubes, for high magnification shots.
Yeah. But I feel 1.65x is enough for pretty much all my shooting needs.
Interesting idea. I should try the same with my Fuji 80mm macro lens I think! (I'll need to check if it works with the 62mm filter ring size of that lens). And perhaps add an extension ring for a bit more magnification too.
About SD cards, the 300MB/s is the read-speed. That doesn't say anything about the (sustained) write-speed. The "V90" marking says more about sustained write speeds.
The fastest writing SD cards are, to my knowledge, the Sony G Tough cards which can write up to 299MB/s. They're quite a bit more expensive though!
Ah that was sloppy of me not to check the write speed haha. But I checked now and the write speed of my new card is 260 mbps, up from 90 mbps on my old one. So should be a big difference hopefully.
@@MicaelWidell Yes, that should certainly make a big difference in speed! That is a very respectable write speed.

Yes I think you are right. Thanks Ian!
Hey Micael, new binger to your channel here. Really want to swap out my A7III that i got when i wanted to start doing events but quickly found that it isn't my thing, so long story short i want to swap to the OM-1 for niche hobby photography (macro, wildlife, astro), the cheap lenses and great reach on this powerful sensor. Quick question though that i can't seem to find a straight answer to: does the in camera macro stacking work correctly with third party flashes? On my sony i use a Godox V860 which i totally love and thought of getting the same for oly, but have no idea if it will work with that feature
Plus any other tips you or anyone else has about this switch idea, feel free to shoot me a reply
Yes the auto stacking works great with other flashes. I have tried it with a Godox v350 for Olympus, and with various Meike flashes made for Canon - works perfectly.
Where would Outdoors Micael be without Indoors Micael to help out? Teamwork, people! BTW - I think that's an Eyed Ladybird (Anatis ocellata)
Thank you :)
7:33 Looks a lot like the Asian lady beetles I have in my backyard except the spots on mine don't have that "bleached out" look around them. Everything else is VERY similar, down to the m shaped pattern they have over their heads. They seem to be smaller than the regular, deep red ladybugs I'd seen before. Haven't seen any of those in too many years now :(
Looks like a nice setup, A lot smaller than what I'm currently using lol
Yes it is nice. Still not sure whether this or my Sony+Laowa setup is my favorite though. Will have to use this one a couple more weeks to make up my mind.
@@MicaelWidell I know you wouldn’t like my setup lmao.
How did you find the new card? Was there a noticeable improvement in focus stacking time?
The improvement is that the camera spends less time afterward writing data. So you are free to go on taking more photos. So it’s a nice upgrade.
In terms of cropping on smaller sensors, have you tried the 40 MP APS-C Fuji sensor for macrophotography? Under good light, which you're going to have with a flash, it produces some ridiculously detailed images and the X-T5 is pretty small and light. Haven't tried it, but I'd imagine that makes for a pretty great macro setup, though I do see the advantages with Olympus' in camera stacking.
I tried Fuji for a while, but there are so many frustrations for me with that system, so I’m not going to use it again for macro photography.
@@MicaelWidell really? 😮
In terms of autofocus I'd completely understand that, but for macro?
As I said, there are quite a few frustrations for me with Fuji. Autofocus is not even a major one. Their files don't work well with lightroom, they feel cheap and plasticky, the buttons aren't that nice, the configuration is messy, my favorite flash does not work with Fuji, the grip is really bad. I could go on and on :) Simply not for me. But if you use fuji and love it, great for you. If you want to hear me talk more about it I do in this video: ua-cam.com/video/RSOtCdOA020/v-deo.html
@@MicaelWidell nah I wasn't trying to get a justification from you, was just kind of surprised. If you don't like Fuji, that's of course fine. 😁
I was also surprised that I didn’t like Fuji :) I really thought I would
Autofocus is better in 90mm F 3.5 and quality too. I have both. I think 90mm Zuiko is the best macro lens in the world market. You can see that cropping. The second il Laowa 50 for micro 4/3, better than Zuiko 60. Let's try! And try the 90mm with 1.4 duolicator! Outstanding!
Hello I have just watched your great video and have the Olympus 60mm f2.8 Macro and want to get the Raynox DCR 250 but can't find a converter anywhere as they all seem to be for 52mm. any ideas where I can get it
Google "Raynox DCR-250 Olympus 60mm step up ring" to find the right step up ring
@@MicaelWidell thanks
@@MicaelWidell Thank you Micael . I ordered Raynox from Photospecialist and adapter from Amazon!
Interesting. The working distance of the 60mm is less than the 90mm, plus its then shortened by using the diopter on the front.
What if you used a 2x teleconverter at the back of the 60mm - would the lens work with a teleconvertor? If not then you could use a short macro extension tube in between them to accomodate the telecoverters optics. You would loose 2 stops of light but that would mean that it would be f5.6 fully open, and you still have the flash adding in the extra light..
As the teleconvertor works after the lens it doesn't effect the lenses minimum working distance much (possible a little because of the extension tube). I guess that there may be a small loss in quality because of the extra glass in the way.
I don't have either lens nor a raynox or teleconvertor so I have no way to test this.
P.S. using the raynox in the front would also change the ability to focus at infinity, with infinity probably producing something like 1:2, whilst a teleconvertor would still allow infinity focus as it alters the image circle after the lens and in a different way to extention tubes.
Do you use focus stacking on camera or PC? how many photos? and what settings?
In this video I did in camera stacking with a distance of 6. The rest of the settings you see in each photo. For some stacks I redid them in Helicon on my computer.
I think the consensus is that professional programs are better than in-camera stacking, but in most cases the in-camera stack is good enough.
@@torkelstenqvist1279 Yes of course the results are the same or better with a computer, but the convenience of in-body stacking is a gamechanger for me. Also, when the in-body stack succeeds that is a hint to me that the stack is good enough to easily re-do in the computer. Earlier, a lot of work for me was trying to go through all the photos and find stackable series - now the camera does a lot for that work for me.
Have you tried ai upscale, I've had great results with my Olympus camera using the same combo, minutes the raynox
Haven’t tried it. I’m a bit hesitant, as I want my photos to be real photos. With AI you are kind of crossing the line into manipulation
@@MicaelWidell there is also this digital tc mode as explained by Andy Rouse ua-cam.com/video/hXtjBhpZCkI/v-deo.html
Are you using a 46-43mm step down ring to put the dcr-250 on the lens?
Correct

Would a 60mm Macro + Teleconverter (either 1.4x or 2x) work on a Macro lens, or does the teleconverter remove the macro capability and just turn the lens into a telephoto lens?
It works if the lens is compatible. I know that you can use TC with the Olympus 90mm lens. What happens is that the focal length doubles while the minimum focusing distance stays the same, resulting in double maximum magnification.

To be honest that's not really a poor man's setup but it is much cheaper than the Olympus 90mm. Extension tubes, reverse ring and vintage macro lenses then you're talking a poor mans setup :) Nice video all the same.

Is it already so hot in Sweden that you can get outside with just a t-shirt on?
Yes winter turned into summer very quickly with no spring in between. Right now it is 23 degrees Celsius here
@@MicaelWidell Nice to know since I'll be in Stockholm next week for a conference :) I live in northern Italy and it has been quite cold and rainy for this time of year until now. By the way, thank you as usual for the plain and useful stuff you're posting. Not many macro channels share your direct and simple approach these days and most of them tend to overcomplicate things and just make you feel like you need more gear just to get some results. Which is simply not true, as you've already proven many times on this channel. The only thing I'm really missing with my current gear is actually automated focus stacking, which hope to get sooner on later on Sony cameras too (I think they added that on their latest models but I won't be upgrading for some years yet). Have a nice day!
Thank you for the kind words. Looks like the weather will be a bit more unstable next week though, so be sure to pack a jacket 😄
@@MicaelWidell For sure ;)
Anatis ocellata, eyed ladybug
Hi,isnt that the "new" ladybug for Sweden that recently got branded as an invasive species,it threatens the normal ladybugs,i think it is that one you found actually
Not sure
Invasive ladybug species??
People identified it as Anatis ocellata
In terms of rounding, 1.65X is much closer to 1.5X than 2X.
That is correct. Not sure what you want to say though?
