Love the ten minute format
New subscriber, love your work. Thanks Peter.
+CGwerx Thanks!
I’m so glad I came across your videos! I am refacing my kitchen cabinets and wanted your opinion on the options I have to make paint grade shaker style doors; options being:
1. adding 1/4 MDF to the top of 1/2 MDF to replicate rails and styles as you show in this video (#007)
2. loose tenon method like you did in video #001 (MDF)
3. CNC out the middle of MDF and insert a panel from the back
4. Traditional rails and styles out of maple with a bevel like Rockler’s 2pc bit set provides. Ideally I want the bevel, but if it’s going to cause a ton of extra work with not much benefit besides cosmetics...I’m ok passing it up.
I have basic woodworking tools (table saw, router, etc) and am also ok buying what I need to do the best job, since I’ll have the tools forever and still save making my own doors.
Thank you for your help! Subscribed and looking forward to going through your other videos.
-Ed
Hi Wd and thanks! My preference is for loose tenons - groove the stiles along their length, and the rails around 3 sides then glue them together with loose tennis made from the panel material. Just made 4 doors that way today; still the easiest method of construction I’ve come across in ~20 years of doing this for a living. 👍👍
Thank you : )
Was hoping to see you fit it in, and see how it looks. Looks great tho, nice wood work :)
Thanks. You know it’s Part 1 of 2, right??
No I didn't know that...Haha. will check it out. Thanks :)
So nice
Thanks!
Great work! I love watching you work, even though I despise MDF! I see you use it a lot... what are the main reasons for choosing MDF over solid wood or ply? All the best, Dan
+Build Something Thanks! I make bespoke/fitted furniture from whatever people want. If it's a painted finish then MDF just takes paint better than ply. In ~17 years nobody's asked me to make anything in solid wood. 👍
Peter Millard I’m continuing to time-travel and your use of MDF is foreign to me too, but it’s growing on me. At work we use a lot of melamine, and the more I work with it the more I have to spend time in my own shop with real wood! I don’t know how you stand the dust but then again, I don’t have a Festool vac or tools. Fun build. Scott
nice tip on the hinges
+joseph woodhouse Thanks! 👍
Im up to Episode #007 :-)
Hi Peter,
Love your videos, great content as usual!
Just wondering where you bought that brush you used to paint the detailing / inner edges of the mock panelling (5:37 if it helps!). Thank you
Also, been waiting for months for you to post your mobile bench build video since you mentioned it in your 'Benchdogs' video but no sign of anything unless I missed it...
Thanks! It's called a Sash Brush - made specifically with sash windows in mind, but useful for all kinds of things. 👍Sash Brush set - amzn.to/2X3takA. And no, haven't done the bench build yet, been too busy with the day job.🤷♂️
I've really enjoyed your videos, thank you so much. I'm curious as to the thickness of the ply used for the top that you screw the piano hinge into, is it 18mm? I have a similar project on the go but I've made the top with 12mm ply (I'm learning!), do you think this would be too thin to mount a piano hinge without splitting the wood? I'm tempted to make the top again with 18mm. Once again thank you for producing such clear videos.
Thanks! Yes, the top was 18mm; I think you’ll struggle to get a decent fixing in 12mm tbh; is it possible to add a 6mm skin to it?
Hi great video as always I’m planning on building myself a dining nook and was looking at building it in a similar way to your window seat my question is what size thickness are you using as I’m not sure what size thickness to use to support weight of 2 grown adults the size is 1130mm x 400mm and I’m going to build 2 and put them together.
Any import will be great thanks in advance
Thanks! 18mm was fine for this, it’ll be fine for yours too 👍👍
Peter Millard brilliant thank you for your fast reply really appreciated
hi peter, i am in the middle of a huuuuge millard binge, and i cant thank you enough for what you are doing for me, question in this video... what would you have done if you had correctly measured for the lid, given that there was a gap needed to the left hand side, but when it opens its almost flush with the wall? i personally think the way it looks in the video is better than if it were taken into consideration at the start.... do you follow? if you had noticed the irregularities of the walls at the start, i imagine that gap down the left of the lid, would have been the same at the front as the rear... hope i made sense here. thanks
Wow, old vid! If I'd known about the walls at the start I would have made the lid with a join in it that lay over the edges of the carcass, with the ends fixed to the carcass and scribed to the wall on each side. That way you'd have plenty of clearance. 👍
I roller MRMDF too, do you find the sponge roller pads OK, or do you use the really short hair gloss rolls?
I use high density foam rollers, makes a huge difference. I go into a bit more detail in my ‘Painting & finishing’ series 👍
Peter Millard ace, not got to them yet!😂😂
Hi Peter a fan from México 🇲🇽 here! Hola!!
Your videos are amazing, question; what tool do you use to make the dominoes holes? And I see that you use little pieces of MDF to fill those hole, are they the ones beef cut by that tool? And last question, what’s the name of that tool, thank you and have a great day
Thank you! The domino is a tool made by Festool; it’s the only machine that makes mortises for that shape of loose tenon, though you can do something similar with a jig and router - I make a jig for exactly that purpose, should be available directly below this video, or at 10minute.shop. 👍
Really enjoyed this video. What is the name of that little bit you used to drill the pilot holes for your hinge screws? Looked like some kind of springy drill bit?
Jack Morris Thanks! It's a self-centering hinge bit - widely available, mine are just a cheap set, work early well 👍
Wow can you do this for my place ? I live in toronto
M seriously looking for someone to do this project and no luck yet
Please let me know 😃
Love it! Do you sell your work?
Thanks! Haha, yes, I’m a carpenter and cabinetmaker in West London - selling my work is how I make a living 👍👍
Hi peter just wanted to thank you for all your great content on UA-cam as well as answering my question regarding the dining nook just joined patreon to add a cup off coffee with cream a month on me a small token to say thank you
Thanks Jason! That’s really generous of you, and very much appreciated!
Hi Peter. Can you tell me the spec of the piano hinge?
Hi Sue. No, sorry - it’s just regular piano hinge, nothing special. 👍
Is there a certain type of MDF you would suggest for this? About to have a crack at it in a couple of weeks!
MR or Moisture Resistant MDF has been my preference for a long long time. Much better quality board for not much more money. 👍👍
@@10MinuteWorkshop Thanks! I'll be backing a crack at a coat / shoe hallway unit. Little intimidating but would like it to fit flush, will have to study how to do these joints and perhaps put a router on the christmas list.
Hi Peter! Can you tell me the wood you used for the sides and bottom? Was it mdf or plywood? Also, what thickness? We're building something like this for our camper. Thanks so much!
It was all 18mm MR MDF. 👍
Thank you! Beautiful work!
What type of screws are you using for mdf to mdf with no pre-drilling? Are you worried about "spilt-out"? The Domino device looks amazing. And thanks for mentioning "MR mdf", never knew it existed.
Hi. Old vid! I use Spax M-cut screws, but I always pre-drill; MR MDF has a much harder core than regular MDF, and is less prone to splitting. 👍
@@10MinuteWorkshop How response can you be 👍 I just discovered your channel which looks good! 🇨🇦
Thanks! And welcome! I’ve done ~421 videos since this one, so hopefully you’ll find something of interest! 😆👍👍
What size F clamps are they? 🤔 can't seem to find anything over a 600mm that doesn't cost an arm and a leg.
Alex Morley I think they're about 900mm - I'll check when I'm back in the workshop tomorrow. They're just really cheap ones off eBay. 👍
Peter Millard that is so weird, I am watching one of your videos as your reply came through. 😱😂
About 90% through all the videos on your channel. My wife is not impressed. 😂😂😂😂
Alex Morley Spooky! 😱 😬 Will check in the am and let you know 👍
Great tip for the piano hinge screws. I would have put them all in, closed it and said bo**ocks.
Haha, thanks! Yeah, learned that one the hard way! 👍👍
@@10MinuteWorkshop I thought you may have done haha. Really enjoy your videos just subscribed. Thanks
@@rich3633 Thanks, and welcome! Lots of back-catalogue to go through, enjoy! 👍
I don't think I could use clamps that long, I would keep walking into the unused end sticking out. Brilliant video tho
+robert gearey Thanks! 👍
Spax make a piano hinge screw! You will end up using them all over!
Hi Peter,
I've just noticed on your video that you've applied glue on a painted edge of your mdf @3:00 ua-cam.com/video/kYm2PpcZZKY/v-deo.html.
I've seen a few times that people have said not to glue on a painted surface as it would not take to the glued edge, better direct to wood.
Are there any differences in strength painted v untouched side?
Cheers
Martin
Thank you for your videos!
Hi Martin. Old vid, but yes, I generally apply glue to a painted surface, only if a/ I can abrade the surface first before applying glue, and b/ if I’m also using some kind of mechanical fixings eg screws, nails, dominos, biscuits, dowels, tenso or clamex fixings. I find I t’s simply easier to paint the whole panel then scuff up the face where the edge abutts, than it is to ‘paint around’ the area; I did plenty that way, before I thought it through for myself, but since changing to my way of working I’ve noticed zero difference in the strength of the joint. HTH, Peter
Hi Peter, thank you for your reply, much appreciated.
Have you given up spraying your own now? 😀😀
..And you don't even know where the camera is located on your iPhone.
Either that, or you haven't bothered to find out.
For your information this makes the film intensely irritating and virtually unwatchable.
But - nice try mate.
😂😂 “unwatchable” - 40-odd thousand peeps would disagree, poppet. Listen, you’re welcome to an opinion - or better still make a vid of your own and show me how it’s done - but if you want to criticise my video technique, try doing it on something current instead of a couple of years old, ‘cos you just look like a bit of a plonker when you do that 👍👍
Peter Millard “Plonker”. That’s a new one for me, but without even knowing the definition I can imagine it based on the comment you are applying it too!
