  • Ryan speaks with Arnold Schwarzenegger on how to be useful while we still have the time, the mental, physical and psychological benefits to nurturing the mind and body, keys moments during his bodybuilding career, running for governor and more..
Arnold Schwarzenegger is an Austrian and American actor, businessman, filmmaker, former politician, and former professional bodybuilder best known for his roles in high-profile action movies. He served as the 38th governor of California from 2003 to 2011 and was among Time magazine’s 100 most influential people in the world in 2004 and 2007.
Be Useful: Seven Tools For Life is written with Arnold Schwarzenegger’s uniquely earnest, blunt, powerful voice. It takes readers on an inspirational tour through his toolkit for a meaningful life. Arnold shows us how to put those tools to work, in service of whatever fulfilling future we can dream up for ourselves. He brings his insights to vivid life with compelling personal stories, life-changing successes and life-threatening failures alike-some of them famous, some told here for the first time.

The number of people in here that are angry about one thing this man said, among all the awesome things he’s done, really shows you don’t really want to follow stoic philosophy. You just want to play around and not change.

Also, I Marcus Aurelius would ask, “Can I change Arnold?” No, I cannot. I can take from him though the positivity, genuine or not, and preach it in my own life. By doing that, I can control what I can change- my own positive outlook on life.

It also shows a lack of actual engagement in philosophy. These people clearly haven’t thought about “freedom” as a concept for very long or why we have laws.

It takes years to build a reputation but it can be ruined in an instant. It’s ironic that he fled Austria for freedom but then goes to make that statement. Think about that.

That the 'Good' Terminator is falling apart. That he is truly living within a community, hiding his true nature. You have touched on this in movies before but it would be interesting to go further on it. A action movie but one that could possibly give you, Arnold, an a Academic Award.

To all you people mentioning Arnold saying “screw your freedom”, you must realise your point is absurdly silly and shows a real lack of engagement in philosophy (which I assume you want to engage in if you’re interested in Stoicism).
To lay things out, what I’ve seen said is that you think “freedom” is this ultimate good, yet providing ultimate freedom necessarily can entail the denial of somebody else’s freedom. If you think laws are a good idea, you necessarily also acknowledge that freedom must be constrained in certain ways to allow for a functional society. What Arnold said was a simple way of making that point - that the people who decry “freedom” as a reason to endanger the lives of others are inherently amoral. They go against what it means to live in a society.

People’s concerns needed to be taken seriously and not ridiculed or dismissed. In a democratic society people should be able to refuse medical procedures/medicines. If you disagree, convince people.
