Maangchi thank you Maangchi. I love your spirit and the way of cooking. I love Korean cuisine. But very hard to find te ingredients generally in my country. Most difficult is to know what is used for what. With this video I hope now I can recognise some and can buy and definitely enjoy your recipes 😊 Thank You. :)
maangchi deserves to be awarded by the korean government. perhaps a cultural merit award? because no one just no one is doing it like her bridging korean food and culture with international audience. + she is always a delight to watch and she gives even a beginner cook so much confidence in beginning this journey~! i’ll always be grateful to maangchi because it was through her i dared to prepare my own korean meals~ thank you so much maangchi~~ 💜💜💜💜💜💜💜
For anyone who wishes they could read Korean, you should totally do it! Only takes about an hour to learn all the phonemes, and the letters are constructed like phoneme building blocks. Once you learn, you just practice reading words (even if you don’t know what they mean), so you get better and faster at it. Ear training is also helpful and necessary, since some of the sounds are similar, and might not be distinguishable to your ear, if you haven’t heard much Korean, prior. Being able to read even a little Korean is a useful skill if you want to read packages at H Mart. Obviously, you’ve gotta level up to read more, like the instructions or descriptions and such, but knowing even a little is better than knowing nothing. My friend taught me this one time when we were taking a break from our chemistry homework, and it really did only take about an hour. She did a good job of breaking down the concepts and organizing the info, which probably helped. This was pre-Internet, so I’m sure there are ample free resources online now.

I just spent a few hours at a Korean grocery yesterday! Couldn't buy half the things I wanted because I'm on a low carb diet at least for the next 6.5 weeks until my baby is born so no rice, beans, or noodles and there is a surprising amount of carbs (sugars) in ssamjang and some other Korean sauces. I absolutely LOVE your recipes and videos, I got some premade side dishes just to be quick but they don't taste nearly as good as making them from your recipes!
Thank you SOOO much. Last January and February I was dieing of starvation because I was one of the unfortunate ones who got that deadly flu. My Korean girlfriend made me Vegetarian Kimchi and it was the only food that stayed in my stomach. My friend, Ahmi, would never give me the recipe. Also, I needed to know how to shop in the Korean grocery store. I will have you in my Right Hand as I shop. I just found you on utube last night and have watched nonstop. You are do adorable, so precious to watch, so talented with your life long Love for cooking, but as a Fashion Designer, you are priceless. You style matches you love for others. You have struggled alot as a foreigner in strange countries and it makes everyone so happy you made it to the top. What shocks everyone, I believe, is you are still giving, still loving, still happy, and still wanting to teach others. You are by far the above Ophra when it come to being successful. People can only love you more and more and more. Wow, you're amazing. No matter the age, people just love you because you have a heart filled with true Love♡
My husband is American and I am Chinese. We both love Korean food. I love your website as well. Very detailed on what each ingredient can be used for! Keep up with the good work!
I have a few recipes I want to try to broaden my taste palate, but I don't think I'm going to be a fan of Korean cuisine. Regardless of my personal preferences I could just sit and listen to her all day. She is absolutely delightful and cute. I love to the way she moves her hands sometimes. I love her videos and this one is very helpful.
Love, love, love, and love all your videos! I've watched all of them and learned so much from you! Watching your videos is so calming! Thank you, Maangchi! ❤️
Thank you so very much for all the explanations. I thought since I had lived in Korea several times, but even I learned a lot from watching your shopping videos! God bless you for being so generous to share your knowledge with us! I love all your videos!
I love you, Maangchi! I'm from England and I am married to a Korean guy. I've lived in Korea for over 2 years now Ever since we got married I have used your recipes, and thanks to your website I've enjoyed so many delicious Korean meals and my husband is always impressed! The first recipe I used was your 미역국 recipe, which I made on his birthday. So thank you, you've made me really enjoy cooking in Korea. I was so confused and made so many failed attempts before I found your site.
I love you Maangchi! I recently found you on UA-cam and I was HOOKED!! I have never had Korean food, but I am determined to make some of your recipes because they look so DELICIOUS and Healthy. You are so inspiring to me. I keep telling my friends, family and co-workers about your channel. I watch you everyday...especially when I am having a stressful day. You are so full of life and it makes me SO HAPPY to watch you cook your recipes!! Thank you for sharing your recipes with me and the world!!
I have been struggling to find Asian markets where I live. I am determined to make jjajangmyeon for me and my family and struggle to find black bean paste without having to order it online. Thanks to your readers, I now know of a few local markets I can visit to hopefully get the supplies I need. :D THANK YOU!!!
Jason Sphynx you can probably substitute Chinese black bean paste, many supermarkets stock it (Lee kum kee brand is quite international). Hold the salt and soy sauce, though, it's much saltier than the Korean one.
I went to one of the local Asian markets that had a mix of ingredients from China, Korea, Philippines and Thailand. I found the Korean black bean paste, but it did not say "fermented" on the front and couldn't find any that did. However I added some salt (since it was a bland base paste) and cooked the recipe with noodles the first time - It was good, but strange at the same time. I tried it a second time with rice and WOW, I love it much better than the noodles. But I am from south USA, so we love our rice, haha. Preference of culture and upbringing I suppose. I love noodles too, but it just felt/tasted strange with a stew-like base on them - Still, it was very good. I'll definitely be trying more recipes over time. Also thank you for the suggestion - I will use the Chinese paste if I find it, just to see how it's like. :)
it's always awesome to see how other culinary elements are used in different cultures. i'm ashkenazic so we often use pike, but now i know in addition to gefilte, i can also use it as a pork substitute, which is especially useful. love your channel!
Thank you so much for this video, I used to live in Korea and now that I'm back in my country I want to keep eating Korean food, so this video was helpful. Now I know how to buy ingredients.
I really enjoy your videos! You are very good at teaching the art of Korean cooking....Thank you! You are also so pretty to watch and I love hearing your personal touch and funny comments. My boyfriend and I made Kimchi last weekend based on your Kimchi recipes. We are vegetarian and used Korean chives, scallions, Napa cabbage, your sweet rice porridge, a small amount of salt and sugar and of course...lots of Gochugaru. I had it tonight with my Rice cakes and Korean style stir fry. YUMMY!
@Maangchi I love your videos! They’ve been so helpful in guiding me while I cook some Korean dishes. You’ve really got me into cooking. 💕💕💕 Keep being awesome!
I guess I could never shop in a Korean grocery store, everything seems to be very complicated, even with your help Maangchi! It will take me years to learn all this!! A very different culture, respects!
Thank you so much - you have given me great insight on how to purchase noodles and everything else! I am always confused about the noodles. My family loves the cellophane noodles or glass noodles and now I know what to look for! I am new to your channel and so very happy I found you. Thank you, again!!! ❤️❤️❤️❤️

Wow, thank you so much for this, you have no idea how helpful it is that you have this information for shopping. I get into an Asian market and feel totally lost. So this is a big help. We have just discovered Koren food and have fallen in love with it. We love kimchi and radish kimchi. I can't wait to try to make my own. The store-bought that I've purchased just isn't the same as the restaurant kind. And I love it! Didn't know you should eat it with rice, lol.
