Great review, man. Your personality always shines thru in these videos. Kudos to you.
I really appreciate that bro! Means so much
Those are literally some of the sharpest looking photos I have ever seen
Size matters, if I can get quality with a smaller size I’m in.
Thanks for explaining what focus breathing is! A lot of other reviewers mentioned it but I had no idea what it meant!
I just picked up the Sony 35mm 1.4GM for under a grand brand new from the store! Can't wait to test it out.
Sony GM 35mm f1.4 - Damn good lens!
Cool video shooting! The perfect lens!
Your intro's are always amazing!
Again, as always, an incredible review love the colours love the video love the music... great job Dan & the review I was waiting for...
Appreciate that Huu!!!
You got a very nice and talented model in this video! GJ Lindsey!
Nice video Dan, I really liked your review!
I say first of all, composition grading and bokeh is A+
as for for effort and music A++ 😁👏
wow that's quiet an opening 💪 great video, thank you
Thanks so much!!!
I would love to get a hands on this baby! Thanks for the video.
The review I've been looking for. Well done!
Thanks for the review love your videos. Very informative.
Wow, incredible work. Well done.
Appreciate that!
Lovely lens 👌 I filmed a whole short film only with this lens - would love to hear your thoughts.
85mm & 35mm is the only lens you need for my thoughts 😊
In the defense of the lens in video making, as long as you don’t have super close obstacles when recording, the video will be okay, but great lens for recording video and works better in lower light.
i ditched the 50mm f1.4 years ago and fell in love with the 35mm f1.4 lens
Yep, most of my life is spent on a 35!
@@learningcameras im either 35mm or on the 135gm lol
Was just gonna ask if i should snatch up one of these and retire my 50mm
Just let your soul glo, just let it shine thru!
That tracking focus shift is kinda of bummer...
so do you recommend 1.8 over 1.4 for video? thanks
If you want a true 35mm, I use the 1.8 way more. But since I made this video, Sony adopted focus breathing compensation to most new cameras so with that feature, this lens now works really well for video, it just ends up being about a 40mm+ lens when that setting is enabled and 45mm when you ALSO add enhanced stabilization. So I like this lens now for video, but it's really almost a 50mm lens when you add all the crops
wicked vid, whats the tune at the start, really nice and chill
Wish they come out with a GM 50mm as well.
ME TOO! I need that 50mm F1.2
YES PLEASE, think it's possible 50mmGM will keep 67mm filter thread? 🙏
Yep, they definitely need a new 50
Already out 50mm 1.2 GM
Your wish was granted.
Great video with all that important information. Well done! The Zeiss Distagon 35mm F1.4 and the Sony 85mm GM are going also to F16 only. That's ok.
I don't know of any f1.4 lens that goes to f22.
great lens
Bought this lens a day ago, question. When AF is ON do you feel a focus vibration when focusing super far to super close? Its dead silent when focusing didn't do any vibration that my hands felt only when focusing super far then super close i felt focus vibration.
So yes. The lens has horrible focus breathing so going from far to super close is moving some major lens elements I guess
Sponsored by Soul Glo! Damn dude, you're drippin'!!!
Lol... best comment
Thanks Mate for such detailed comparison review, i am comparing Sony 35gm and Sony 35 1.8 ,If I am a video maker and don’t really mind focus breathing issue. Wondering the video images quality gonna make any noticeable difference on FX3 ‘s 4K 10bit ? Consider the resolution is very low on 4K. My key consideration is image quality on video.
Hey! So I don't think you will notice a difference in sharpness between the 2. Potentially the differences in bokeh will be noticeable if you shoot super wide apertures. The focus system is also faster on the GM but again, the original 35mm is so fast you would have to really be pushing the limits to notice. I think the new 35mm GM is great but if you are primarily shooting video, it's harder to justify
@@learningcameras Thanks for the idea Dan, if the difference on image quality is hardly noticeable. I would go with 35 1.8 consider it’s only one third of the GM price. I would like to buy GM if its any better on video image quality though, but I feel like GM is maybe more for photography.
Sooo, if one has already the 24mm f1/4 GM - 24-70mm f2/8 GM and 85mm f1/4 GM, in your opinion, one of them has to depart for the 35mm ?
The 24...I'd pick between the 35 and 24mm
Do you mean 24-70 gm2.8 has to depart?
@@reynaldocasas8887 24-70 stay..U only had to choose 1 prime, 24 or 35
Hey dan,
So for video/photo, because of the focus breathing issue
Is it safe to say, save the money and go for the sony 35mm 1.8, given its not that different in image quality?
Maybe. I think getting the 1.8 and using the extra money somewhere else wouldn't be bad. The GM is an upgrade for sure but not night and day
Love your review Dan! If you could only choose one, would it be the 24m 1.4 gm or 35mm 1.4 gm for video?
Thanks so much! I use a 35mm way more. A 24mm is just too wide for me for most of my shoots and then not wide enough when I actually want a wide angle lens for things like interiors/vlogging...things like that. I'd definitely go 35
@@dswatson83 Thanks Daniel! You made my decision towards the 35 alot easier! Cheers and keep up the with the awesome content!
haha kind of funny now that they announced 50mm 1.2 at 9:22
What was the music you used in the beginning of the video?
great video. what filter are you using on the front of the lens during the intro?
Thanks! These are the filters that I use...mostly just for video though: bhpho.to/3gREA6f
i am mostly filming inside my 35 sq living room, do you think 24mm 1.4. or 35mm would suit better?
At least the 24mm 1.4 or 20mm 1.8. The 35mm will be too tight.
I see you are using the PolarPro ND filter, and it looks like you stepped up the ring size. Which step up ring did you use? It almost looks like it doubles as a lens hood.
So yeah, I tend to use 82mm for most of my filters so I'll buy whatever step up ring is needed. Ideally I would like to own 2 sets of filters for 82mm and 67mm so everything 67 and smaller gets the 67mm and everything 72mm and larger gets the 82mm but that gets expensive lol
@@dswatson83 Thanks for the fast reply! I was wondering if you could say which ring specifically. Yours looks to extend forward a bit, and kind of fan out rather than just step up and out to accommodate the large 82mm. It's hard to tell from the video but yours appears to fan out and forward a bit and I feel like it almost offers a lens hood kind of effect as well. Might just be the way it looks in the video tohugh
cool video
hey Dan, how do you manage your prime lens? whats your choice for the sony system? the focal lenth of 20, 24 and 35 are super close!
So I use a 35mm lens and 50mm lens the most for general shooting. Works for just about anything and it just depends on how far away I want to be from my subject as to which I'll pick. I don't often use a 24mm just because it's too wide for people and not wide enough if I want that wide angle look. I'll use a 20mm occasionally if I either need more in the shot or want a wide angle look
@@learningcameras Sounds like a great choice, appreciate it!!!
How is the 35mm a “great portrait lens”? Seems a bit counterintuitive when you consider the amount of distortion they usually have. Is this GM version any different?
I don't find a 35mm has much distortion unless you are REALLY close. We use a 35mm for more environmental portraits so the subject is never all that close. For anything super close I would definitely use something like an 85mm or at least a 50mm but we shoot quite a bit of more environmental portraits
@@learningcameras Ah! Makes sense. Thanks, Dan!
Would love to see a side by side comparison of the 35 1.8 vs 35 1.4. I've used the 35 1.8 before and really loved everything about it, size and weight included. Just at the time needed something wider. Now I'm in the market for a 35 to replace my 55 1.8 that I hate.
What's wrong with the 55mm 1.8? I heard that's a great light lens.
@@kifley19 It sucks. AF is dodgy, chromatic aberration is awful, sunflaring is awful, my most unfavorite lens without a doubt.
@@GarrettGreenwald I heard about the CA issue before and that sucks unfortunately. You should check out the Sigma 65mm F2.
@@kifley19 Yeah I've seen a couple reviews of it, looks like a really nice lens. I have a Samyang 85mm 1.4 though, would be difficult to justify having a 65mm also. I like a small compact prime for street photography, which is why I'm looking for a 35mm right now.
@@kifley19the lens doesn’t suck at all, either this guy doesn’t know what he’s talking about or he has a lemon. Mine has very minimal CA, it’s extremely sharp and the AF works great. Always take these comments with a grain of salt as a lot of times people don’t know how to use their af and think it’s the lens. The 55 1.8 is a great lens and everyone loves it. It’s just a little pricey. I’ve had mine since 2017 and it works great.
Buenas Dan. ¿Qué me recomendas?
Buy a a7iii
Hej Dan I am in a dilema, I want to buy a 35 for my sony 7Iv but if I use it in 60fps I will be a 52 ish, Should I buy the 24?
Yep, if you plan on shooting often in 4k60, get the 24mm. Plus if you use the "active" stabilization, that crops in a bit too. And you can still run the camera in 4k24 in an APSC crop mode with great quality so even if you want that 35mm focal length in 24p, you still can do it. Plus this 24mm is amazing and on sale! bhpho.to/3H2eoRj
@@learningcameras thank you so much, I am in such a big dilema hehe I have zoom apsc 17 70, and I have a budget to get one BIG BOY LENS, 24 gm, 35 gm, 35-150 (I dont mind the weight) or make the effort fort for a good 24 70, but my dilema is that I shoot with sony 7Iv and now also my FX30. I am 85% solo shooter with vision of having a second shooter in the future. Only if you have the time can you give me a quick idea?
@@ZamoraChristian If you shoot quite a bit on a tripod, the 35-150 is amazing. But if it's more handheld/gimbal, I'd look at a 35mm or a 24mm if you like the wider look. I personally prefer to shoot tighter so I'm more likely to go 35 personally
@@learningcameras Hello Dan I am super gratfull with your answer, I have actually bought the 35 OMG you were right I AM IN LOVE
You probably won't even see this but I have a question. Would this lens be too close of a shot for a distance of arms length or even a metre ?
Depends on what you are shooting but typically a person for example would need to be 1-2 meters away for this to be a good lens. Anything arms length would typically be 24mm or wider
@@learningcameras thank you very much, that’s exactly what I needed to know. I was stuck between the 24mm and 35mm GM.
I though that was Stevie from Schiits Creek in the thumbnail
LOL! Omg yes!
Good morning, if I understand correctly, can you see focus breathing a lot in the video, so much so that it is not recommended? I have the 35 f / 1.8 and I am undecided whether to invest a large sum if it will bring me problems with the video. Bye from Italy
So you would see it the most when shooting things close to you but if you were doing say a rack focus from something about 1ft away from the camera to something further away, it would be very noticeable. It can be a little distracting at worst but it certainly isn't a deal breaker
@@learningcameras Thank you so much
no eyecup + no hotshoe cover = real pro
Hahaha...means our cameras get used and beat up rather than spending the month polished in a bag
I’m so torn between this and 24mm
I personally use a 35mm more but I would just throw on a 24-70mm or kit zoom for the day, go out and shoot and see if you prefer shooting wide at 24 or if you end up wanting to zoom in a bit in which case buy the 35
If only using it for video, and the subject is tracked by autofocus only about 6-8 feet away from the camera, is the lens breathing severe enough to call it a deal breaker?
Probably not. The closer the subject is to the lens, the more noticeable it is. Inside the 6ft mark is where it becomes noticeable and anything closing in on a few feet might be a deal breaker
@@learningcameras Thanks for the insight man, and I appreciate your work. I suppose if I'm worried about breathing, the 24mm is on par with this optically, but without the breathing I gather?
@@KZLR Yeah, I don't remember seeing as much breathing on the 24mm and it is a great lens. It does have a bit of interesting flare characteristics but I don't mind flare. Otherwise the 24mm is amazing. It's also on sale but only till the end of today! bhpho.to/3pAbkDv
its too soon to say that love this lens!!! but its ok, little bit of enthusiasm don't hurt anyone!!! keep up!!
ok my curiosity is getting the better over my manners.
your hair looking wet is really throwing away my concentration for the content of the video lol
I ordered one months ago. Sony, where is the lens?!
Does anyone know what day it’s released?
Preorders are live and it should ship in 2 weeks: bhpho.to/3tgAARM
Where did you shoot your test footage for this lens?
North Orlando not far from where I live
@@learningcameras I also live in Orlando. I’m looking to do a photo shoot at a park like that one.
I ended up picking up a Sigma 35mm F2 more affordable lol or else’s I would of bought the GM Sony 35
Did you put the 35mm on a drone??
No...although I do see Sony has a new drone coming out that will hold an A7 so maybe soon! Those were just some establishing shots with the Evo 2 Pro I just reviewed
Nice lens, but it is too expensive for me.
what do you think aboutn focus breathing on this lens? 34 gm/ for video
It's definitely worse than other lenses including the Sony 35mm F1.8G but it's really only noticeable at close focus distances so only if you have an object within about 3ft of the lens. For things further away, it's not really a problem
@@learningcameras for a talking head and interviews, could this be a problem?
@@Kuliginvitalik No, not really. It's only if you are doing focus pulls or if someone is maybe walking towards the camera where you see the shift enough to care. If you are not shifting focus dramatically, you won't see the breathing
@@learningcameras Is the picture quality much different between GM 35 1.4 and Sony 35 1.8?
@@Kuliginvitalik The 1.4 is a bit better towards the edges especially but for video you won't really notice too much. If you were shooting photos more, I'd be more likely to spend the extra for the GM
What filter is that?
This one bhpho.to/3c0PvJo
i guess sony forgot to send me this lens to review too... again:(
The FE 35mm F1.8 is not a G lens unless you have an unannounced future product.
So not upgrading? I'm trying to decide
Looks like a nice lens...but really. 3x the price of the 1.8? Is it 3x better? No. Is it twice as good? Hmmm no. Ridiculous price just because it's got a red G on it.
It's less than double the 1.8 price here...not 3x. $650 specifically. There are definitely some improvements in IQ, build, and physical dials but obviously "worth it" is different for everyone. It's also way cheaper than a Canon/Nikon 35mm 1.4. I actually didn't think the price was that ridiculous but lenses have diminishing returns for sure
The 1.8 is £549 in the UK, the 1.4 will be £1500. That's pretty close to 3x the price over here which is a big ask for a lens that, although better, isn't 3x better. I would guess that 90% of people who looked at images side by side would struggle to notice the difference, especially in this day and age of social media uploads? YMMV of course.
I have the Sigma 35mm F1.2. How does this newer lens compare to the Sigma f1.2
how is the camera working vs Sony a7iii as it is less pixels on the a7siii is a7iii better for fotos maybe it doeseny matter so much on film
Could you say something about the recently published DXO Marks' numbers on Sony A7S III ? They are strikingly bad. Thanx
Only for the guys: 3:49
How this people get this lens is not even out yet?
Sony sends them to review. Its pre production
You got to be a big camera gear UA-camr with a heavy focus on Sony gear
I just switched to Sony and don’t own a 35mm. 🙂
Is this going to be your first?!
can't get pass that focus breathing
Very compact but not the price. Hahahha. Waiting for a big sale if any.
NGL looks great. But the hype is just hype. Almost 95% of users will be just fine getting the Sony 35mm 1.8 or the Sigma 35mm 1.4/1.2. I'm sure the GM is better in some aspects but unless you're doing weddings, street photography, etc etc professionally...get something cheaper
Its kinda like the 85mm 1.8 and the 85 gm 1.4
85mm 1.8 is just as good
When you upload to social media, it will look the same. Plus, most people are viewing stuff on their small phone screens.
@@TimandLauren you're right about the 85mm focal length but the same can't be said about a wider 35mm. 1.4 does make a lot of difference in bg compression compared to the 1.8. I think for the size and exceptional image quality that price is worth. Of course the 1.8 is good enough for most people but if you want the best you're paying only a fair price
24 1.4 gm....cinematic looks...35mm is not a sweet spot.
For photography almost perfect , for making video doesn't;This lense it have veri bad focus breathing .
Weak review and repetitive. Not like you Dan.
