Thinking about doing this too for my next tank project. Good stuff, music is nice and moody too.

While I hate having a bunch of plastic crap in my tank, it's a great way to lighten the structure load & keep substrate from being too disturbed when working with plants.
I do natural tanks with various layers & I usually just set the rocks on my sand cap.
If I need to build height, I just grab large, junk rocks from the yard (& maybe some sharp, driveway gravel for extra stability) & cap those with the good, expensive stuff. 😎

I never thought of this and I was wandering how much soil I would have buy to build this. Very helpful!! Thank you!!

Super cool video!! These were absolutely brilliant tips for building up height for our aquascapes.. thank you for showing us the process... These are the kind of things I will utilize in future builds!! We are still going through a tough time with the grandbaby and I truly enjoyed the video. I hope you have an amazing day!! Thanks again!

Have you ever tried this approach, but using "bags" of Lava Rock instead?

Would you mind giving a link to the wider spaced grating? I've been looking for some about that size.

Interesting. I usually just pile rocks themselves up and add a layer of gravel. In turtle tanks I’ve used pvc pipe and eggcrate to make raised land areas; adding a layer of acrylic if I want gravel or sand on it.

I was wondering.. is this method for a "permanent" tank? I've heard that anaerobic conditions are a factor with deep substrate. I REALLY would love to do this in my 120gal that I just bought. Let me know!

I really would love to do this in my next setup but my concern would be planting deeply. Are you going to be able to sink the plants in at all without hitting that crate?
I did sorta the same in my 75 with light diffuser material, but I painstakingly made each section just big enough for exactly where the rock was going to sit. And I had 120# of Pagoda Stone, so yeah it was paid full. But four months later it's holding good.
    Btw, thanks for the content.

Sometimes I do run into the panels, there will be a planting video out soon, and I do sometimes have to clip gaps in the mesh for larger root balls.

Is that eco complete substrate? I heard you mention stratum but it looks more like gravel

This is my first time here. I enjoyed this video as I am still working on my project.
This is my take on your your mound that I started a few weeks ago. I am still in progress.
    ---
I started to use Light Panels/Egg-crate to give me height with the fine mesh on top to keep the gravel from dropping below... I'll be using Aquarium-safe mesh to cover the Egg-crate to create the slopes.
I added 3 different forms of baked clay products, including Flourite Red. I added the Biological Bacteria, Liquid Plant Fertilizer, Quick Starter, Oolitic Aragonite, and other stuff to this base layer to get the Biological Filter started.
Since I am creating a tall narrow central island or just a jetty coming from the rear narrow end at the wall in this 21"Tall 55G (12.5"W) Community Aquarium that is a room-divider. I wanted it to not be so heavy with mounds I rock weight. It will sorta be like a Paludariam, but since it is my room-divider between the living-room and kitchen-dining area... I wanted to see it as I walk through this small apartment from both directions.
I have also been thinking about tunnels and caves. I bought some Lava Rock and Dragon Stone to experiment with making holes using a concrete hole drill. I imagine with them being wet, that they will be easy to drill through. Or, just use Aquatic Expanding Foam to create access way between both sides. My plan is to also create and inch or 2 dent at the top to place the planted substrate to hold the plants... sorta like a riverbank edge with roots... and maybe even a gentle waterfall.
I am also thinking about having airstone circle somewhere on the bottom since my Fish love to play in it.
    ---
I am giving credit here to KG Tropicals where John placed a panel in his big tank to support the big boulders in the tank as he was setting it up. This is where I got the idea. I immediately liked the idea.
I included this link to show you what I am talking about. I kept it about a .5" gap around it to push the substrate around it.
    Louvered-Ceiling-Light-Panels/3280904... "egg crate"...
