My favorite anecdotal classical story is about this symphony. Bruckner was visiting his idol Wagner in Bayrueth in 1873 to dedicate either his 1st or 3rd to the master. Bruckner played for Wagner both symphonies on the piano. Wagner at his charming best- yes he had that side-then invited Bruckner to drink some local Weiss beer. Bruckner protested and said he couldn't but Wagner said "Oh come now! Bayreutzer beer is good for you" Then two of the greatest composers of all time got very drunk! Staggering back to his hotel, Bruckner couldn't remember which symphony he had dedicated to Wagner! On hotel stationary he sent back to Wagner " The symphony with trumpet call at the beginning?" [This one] Wagner wrote back on it " Yes yes ! Hearty greetings! R. Wagner. " Bruckner treasured the note all his life.

I first heard this gem of a symphony by sheer chance and was bowled over . I was lucky enough to get tickets to the centenery Ring Cycle in Bayreuth 1976 Boulez/ Chereau and managed to buy 2 tickets for the Munich orchestra /Celibidache which just happened to be on the night between Walkure and Siegfried and a nice drive from Bayreuth . It was magnificent and i will never forget that experience.( no other conductor would dare take the final pages so slowly ). This too is a very good performance and Jarvi is a fine conductor. Great recording and camera work.

The Bruckner’s symphonies are real masterpieces. Although is difficult at first time to be involved in his music, but as far as we continue to heart his works we discover the beauty of his music that touches us deeply and is incomparable to everything that has been composed until the present day. His music simultaneously is majestic and with strong lyricism that are unparalleled. The orchestra performance and direction are magnificent. Thanks for this remarkable recording.

This symphony was my first exposure to Bruckner, and it remains one of my favorite symphonic pieces. It has a very modern sound about it, even though it was composed in the late 19th century. Bruckner's symphonies are so majestic and mysterious, with an ambiguous and tentative quality about them. There are no assertive resolutions to his symphonies, in contrast to other symphonic composers like Beethoven, Schumann and Brahms.

At first I used to dread Bruckner nights at the proms (though some parts were thrilling) but I came to Get it More and he's now an enthusiasm of mine. I thought this performance, though it might not milk the grand and impressive bits to the limit, it makes it sound an organic and logical progression. And the opening is beautifully well balanced with the trumpet being part of the texture, not the soloist.

Bruckner fans are usually too attracted to his later spiritual works. But, if Bruckner's Beethoven style personality is not understood, one will often ask how can this seemingly shy and humble man compose so spiritual, gigantic symphonies. That's a fundamental misunderstanding of this man.

We had in program the 2nd Mahler's symphony at a Festival of Sacred music in Rome, many years ago, but they changed the program (I don't know the reason behind), so it was the 3rd Symphony of Bruckner to be the new program gem. There's no other Symphony which can compete with the Resurrection of Mahler, especially on such occasions as Sacred Music Festival. Very beautiful, profound, with solemnity and richness of sound and melody, etc.
I usually don't comment here, but listening to this recording, it reminded me about those times and made me relive musically this beautiful score. ❤

With its beauty, majesty and spirituality, this is music that can suspend time and touch eternity. But Bruckner was also "earthy", and his 3rd and 6th Symphonies to me also exemplify this quality of being totally friendly and accessible. I especially love the lilting second subject of the finale here (first at 42:03); and I never noticed before the extent of the cyclical structure of the work. I've not heard the original 1873 version yet, but certainly plan to do so; composer Robert Simpson said that it has a "majestic momentum that later versions altogether destroyed". This 1889 version is nonetheless quite impressive, especially in this fine performance!

I would choose Eugen Euchum's (Classical Music/Reference recordings channel) rendition over this one. I have not got enough experience to express the reason, I only feel it.

I wish that Paavo had put Symphonies 1,2, and 3, with the marvellous Frankfurt Radio Orchestra, on to DVDs, They are just as good as his later symphonies. Paavo's interpretation of Bruckner Symphonies, is far superior to most other conductors.
I have the Barenboim set of Mature? Symphonies,on DVD, but he failed to record 1,2,and 3, which would have made the set complete (with the 00 and the 0.) included.

I love all of Bruckner's symphonies ... but there is a (too much) short passage in this 3rd which is sublime : from 20'50" to 23'00" ... this melody comes directly from the sky .. .

I just watched this performance of the Bruckner Third once again. Great! As I have mentioned before, it would be fun to substitute the Scherzo from the 1877-78 version with the coda, to the 1889 edition with the brass blazing away out the door in the fourth movement. This week I am re-watching all of Paavo Jarvi's Bruckner performances posted on YT. Cheers!

Bruckner never stopped revising. Later editions a la Nowak seem to me more polished perhaps more playable. Good to experience the earlier raw power but the influence of critics on Bruckner ultimately improved the product.

We have 110 professional full-time orchestras in Germany - a unique “landscape” worldwide. This orchestra is that of the Hessischer Rundfunk, Frankfurt, financed by the fees of all German households - every tenant has to pay 18.00 euros a month, whether they want to or not. In return we get a state-independent radio net and various television stations...

Um, ziemlich schnell? 38:52 III is closer to Rock.
I'm not sure, because it was published in 1890, 8 years before Mahler's 3rd. and in the German, "measured" is more important than "ziemlich" (rather). In any event, the orchestra does slow down a bit, but I've heard this played much slower.

This is bugging me...those recurring four booming notes. Where have I heard this before? I've never heard of Bruckner till now. Where could I have heard these notes before? EDIT: Found it: The finale of Shosty 12. Now who copied whom here? No, I don't believe anyone copied anyone. Composers are perfectly capable of INDEPENDENTLY coming up with similar-sounding melodies by sheer coincidence.
