So many ceremonies where the locals pray for good luck and prosperity. Translates into "its ok to overcharge the rich tourists" when back at work. Charging different prices to different customers is a normal business practice in the western world too. We all pay different fares when we fly for example. I found it very interesting process to find the bottom prices for good, services and food. You will only find out when staying longterm in one place. Kind of reward for staying put. Sometimes I had a laugh at how I got milked when I arrived in a new place. Take it easy..its mostly affordable lessons you pay for.

It's not like we're talking hundreds of dollars and in most cases I've found it's a bit of a fun game. I remember some taxi prices I've paid when first arriving in a new place and I swear I'll never repeat the amounts paid. :)
LOL He got you for an extra $1. I'm sure you'll survive. I payed $3 for a full breakfast and mug of tea in Pattaya. That must have been too much, because I was there on my own most mornings. $3 LOL In Perth it's like $20 for a tomato and strip of bacon and egg. Then $5 for a coffee.

Are you sure he was trying to double the price? :) There were only 5 sticks in each porsion he was preparing for other people at the counter. If I'm not mistaken I saw 10 sticks in the porsion he gave you. Is it possible that he also doubled the amount of satays? :) Although if that's the case he should've said so. He did look genuinely confused when someone behind him said or asked something (I couldn't quite catch what that person was saying) but his reply was that he forgot how much he charged you before and that was when he was selling at "patung Arjuna".

Hi Matt. Being a person who doesn't have children let alone having travelled with them, I'm probably not the best person to offer any advice - it's a world I'm unfamiliar with. Sorry.
I hope you will find affordable accommodation on your trip around the island, seeing that it's high season then- meaning very busy and probably more expensive too. Loved the sequence with Ken and Barbie - I guess he's gay and that's the reason he moved to Bali, as it's better here than in Jakarta for LGBTQ+ people. I ran a NGO called Designers against AIDS for 20 years and in Bali started a spin-off called Bali /Indonesia against AIDS, as this was the only place to do it a bit more easily.
Hi Ninette.I wondered if Gary moved for the same reason. And yes, I imagine costs for traveling at that time of the year will increase. Congratulations on the work you were doing here. Cheers.
I understand why a seller would over charge a tourist, but not a good business plan to do it to people that live there. Better to keep the local customers coming to buy his products that going elsewhere.
Ahhh the different prices depending on who you are. And this doesn't just apply to foreigners as Jakartans are often charged tourist prices also! For Indonesian speakers like yourself Wayne it is always a bit cheeky to hang around a seller and listen to the prices that are being charged to other people and then using this information to your advantage. What about your word today being saja = just or only. When challenging the sate seller you can say sepuluh ribu saja = 10,000 only. Often locals will drop the s and you will only hear aja.
It's the culture. A granny who pay every morning an apple since 50 years, still have to nego each day the price.. Always ask first the price, even you buy there every day the same.
Let’s put that into context, 10rb is $1. Why would you make him feel bad for it, also if you stick around before you walked off, he said to the next lady beside you he was mistaken about the price because he sold satay before in another location and his price there was 20rb. I believe this was an honest mistake. But to be honest, what’s $1aud for us Australians when a plate of satay like that in Perth is easily $12-15, it’s funny how in one sentence you say what’s 5/10rb more but still want to get it off him…. I’m a fan of yours, but man this reminds me of that time when my family and I were in one of those massage places and one young oz was getting her nails done, in the middle of it she argued about being charged what was written on the front sign and obnoxiously argues about 20rb…. This is what give us tourists a bad name, sure they shouldn’t try it on, but context is context, this is a 10rb plate of decent size satay, not one of those clothes selling Bali sellers selling $5.00 made in china tshirts trying to open their price at $200aud
Unfortunately its very common, even they know you, may call you a friend, they smile at you and double the price. That would be the last time I buy something there. Anyway I never go to the markets in Ubud, they too expensive already. Just a little bit to the South, direction Lodthundo, or even to the bigger market in Sayan you will find way cheaper prices. Sure you need a scooter, and sure this will not much bother you because you a single person, but I or my wife have to provide food for a family of 4. Yes I´m an expat too but I got my income in IDR. And once you go to Java you will be shocked how cheap everything is there. E.g. a house with about 70 sqm, simple of coz, you can rent between 2 and 3 Million a year = that's your monthly rent in Ubud for a small room.
Hi goodmood. I haven't experienced a lot price jacking if I'm to be honest, but of course it happens. Having spent a few periods living in Yogyakarta I can attest to the affordable cost of living in some parts of Java - it can be quite cheap. Thanks.
The sate.chap said "ini bosku." This is my boss. So I'm assuming he was charging you the official price to keep face, and/or she was his wife and he didn't want to end up in the doghouse. I felt for young Edi. Many times as an interpreter, I have interviewed Indonesian men who have worked on international ships, and most have been trated terribly. Indonesians generally do not complain, this has led to massive exploitation, violence and even murder by unscrupulous captains and owners. Despite this, as Edi said there is a lot of competition in the villages for crew on international ships. I hope he does well for himself.
Edi struck me as one of those quiet achievers who when his mind is put to something he generally succeeds. I've spoken to a few young people now who have the desire to work on cruise ships. i hope conditions improve if it's as bad as you say.

I understand why a seller would over charge a tourist, but not a good business plan to do it to people that live there. Better to keep the local customers coming to buy his products that going elsewhere.
I agree it makes sense to go for repeat business but I imagine many sellers just don't expect many westerners to hang around long.
Bali villas are now passing western rents
Also tell them yr name is wayan
Definitely getting more expensive for a villa.
Thanks Daniel. It seems nobody is immune. Cheers
tips from me : If you buy something and already knowing the price, make sure you pay with the right money. don't ask again about the price
😊
Hi Svetlana. Good to see you.
