This is the card tricks block! Beautiful I’ve always wanted to make this one 🥰 This is gonna be fun and I love the reproduction 30’s prints! I have so many of them what a cute block! 👏🏼
I love this block I've never made it it looks complicated but actually it's easy isn't it ?.. I find that you explain and demonstrate very well. Better than most. Really appreciate it thank you.
I can't make them all free because this is how I make money for my family but I do one, big free one a year and this is the one! I hope you enjoy making the blocks!
You know if you turn that block 45 degrees and rethink it, the block is made of squares and rectangles 9:32 except for the triangles around the edges. Piece of cake!
Thanks! I'm not sure. I'm using a wide variety of 30s prints. They are not all from the same collections. When I am looking for prints like these, I just search '30s reproduction fabric' on Etsy or from other online fabric shops.
Thank you for creating this learning opportunity! I appreciate having access to the setting in advance and have everything cut out and ready to sew as I make the blocks. I am making the king size, using Fig Tree fabrics from my stash with reds for setting rows and yellows for the stars with ivory solid for the block sashing. My thought is to use low volume prints for the block backgrounds. Would that work or do you recommend a solid for the blocks to match the block sashing? Thank you!!
I think that would work beautifully! I do that often where I use low volumes in the blocks and then a solid white or cream in the setting. I hope you have fun sewing along!
I made it,am sew excited. I tried to make the 2 at a time HST it doesn't work for me ,so I followed the pattern directions along with the video.Should have done it the first time..Jessica Thank you for your lovely pattern❤
Thanks! In the video, I don't usually mention the sizes. You'll need the block pattern. You can find it here- jessicadayon.blogspot.com/2023/12/2024-scrappy-sampler-block-1.html
There are no fabric requirements for the blocks. You can choose to do it however you'd like. Here I am doing a multi color one but on Instagram, I am also making a red and white one.
Jessica, I want to join your sew along. I know I’ll learn from you, I’ve been quilting only 1.5 years. I’ve never been in a sew along, though I’ve really wanted too. Why am I so afraid to join in?
Maybe you don't want to make mistakes or you are worried you won't be able to make the blocks. But, from experience, I can tell you that you will make mistakes! That is meant to be freeing, not discouraging. I make so many mistakes- all. the. time. I try not to get caught up with it, knowing that every mistake is also a learning experience. As you go through your quilting journey, the frequency of mistakes lessens but I don't think they ever stop completely. I think you should give it a try! When I first started, I wasn't in love with the look of a sampler but I tried one and fell in love. Now, I adore making samplers. They are great for learning new blocks, but at the same time, not committing making a whole quilt of each block. You learn new techniques and practice things that you many not have picked out for yourself to learn or make. Also, in terms of the tiny pieces being used my this quilt sometimes- the first time I made a 1 1/2" half square triangle (HST), it was horrible but when I went back to make a larger size HST for another quilt, I saw a huge improvement in my accuracy. Never has a technique in quilting improved my accuracy like piecing with tiny pieces. Let me know if you have any other questions!
Hello Jessica. This is my first time doing a quilt along and I have purchased the setting pattern. Where do I find the instructions for the blocks? I have watched the instructional video but need the measurement for the blocks.
All of the block patterns will be posted on my blog. Here is the link for this one- jessicadayon.blogspot.com/2023/12/2024-scrappy-sampler-block-1.html
Are there instructions for doing 2 at a time HST and then trimming down? I have a hard time getting accurate measurements when I make them one at a time.
There are not instructions. However, the two at a time is very close to the one at a time. When you cut the square, just don't cut it on the diagonal and then use sew the two squares at 1/4" from the center line on each side. Using the square size that I say in the cutting, will give you exact without trimming. But, if you just cut it bigger, and do the two at a time method, you'll have a bigger HST and you'll be able to trim it to size. It doesn't matter how big you start- you could do 1/8" bigger, 1/4" bigger, 1/2" bigger, etc...
Hi Jessica. Thanks for the link. It gives me a picture but doesn't tell me what to cut or how to sew it together. I feel like I'm missing something here. Is that on the video?@@jessica_dayon
You need to scroll down in the blog post and find the part that says- You can download the PDF for Block 1 HERE. Click on the word 'HERE' and the download will open (which contains all of the cutting sizes and instructions).
Wait, I found it. When clicking on schedule, click the back arrow at the top left. This will take you to the block pattern (in case anyone else did, what I was doing- fyi).

I thought I was going to be ready and then I get sick so I'm already behind. Ugh!!😍😍
I hope you are well soon but no rush for the patterns. They will continue to be available.
You know if you turn that block 45 degrees and rethink it, the block is made of squares and rectangles 9:32 except for the triangles around the edges. Piece of cake!
If I turned it 45 degrees, I would still cut triangles to set it.
Love your fabrics can I get them in the UK

Thank you, its easy to follow. But my block is a bit off, because i need a better machine. I think i hold off making blocks till it gets here...
Your cutting is so precise. Do you use a die cutter? I just cannot cut that great.
I cut with rotary cutter and ruler. It does take lots of practice.
OMG this is so cute. I would love to try it. Just not sure of the sizes….sorry as hard of hearing
Thanks! In the video, I don't usually mention the sizes. You'll need the block pattern. You can find it here- jessicadayon.blogspot.com/2023/12/2024-scrappy-sampler-block-1.html
haha, reason I didn't hear the size. Thanks for the address where to find it....enjoy your day
I was wondering where you got your fabric from
I usually get it from Etsy.
How many different fabrics do we need?
There are no fabric requirements for the blocks. You can choose to do it however you'd like. Here I am doing a multi color one but on Instagram, I am also making a red and white one.
Should be hashtag? If so, what do we use????
I am using #2024scrappysampler
