I'm 76 years old and getting back into sewing. I enjoy your videos, and I'm learning a lot. You appear to be calm and relaxed in explaining directions. I'm happy I found your channel. HAPPY 2024. Cheri

Love this little bow tie block. The blue colors are very beautiful, too.

Hi Jessica. I made a few blocks yesterday and did NOT press as I went. I just did your style of finger pressing and wow! I was surprised how much more accurate my blocks were. I also enjoy the way you edit your videos so they aren’t super long…but all the information is there.

Yes, it's actually easier to match blocks up if they haven't been pressed hard and flat. You have more leeway to help them fit together. I wish everyone knew this. And pressing with steam will actually distort your blocks.

@@jessica_dayon One question. I have trouble doing chain piecing of half square triangles because my needle will push the fabric down and get stuck. I’ve changed to a new needle but it still happens…any ideas to avoid that? Thanks!

What kind of needle plate are you using? My machine has the option to have a 9mm plate and also a straight stitch plate. When I'm piecing, I always use the straight stitch plate because it only has a small hole where the needle goes down into the machine instead of a large opening. I never have an issue with fabric being pulled down when I'm using the straight stitch plate.

@@jessica_dayon well that is interesting. I only have one plate and it does have the large opening. I will check and see if there’s one for the straight stitch for my machine. Thanks so much!!

Jessica, when you work with small pieces do you use Best Press? Love this block.

I don't generally use any type of starch. If I pull out a really wrinkled piece from my scrap bin, I will but otherwise, I don't.

I think my mistake was that I thought this was easy because it turned out crooked...
