George Raft is one of my favorite actors. He was always wearing his fedora with style. I enjoyed watching him in the movie "Some like it hot" with Marilyn Monroe, Tony Curtis and Jack Lemon.

I see that George Raft got a few of his dance moves from Earl "Snake Hips" Tucker.

George Raft entered the picture business because he looked like Rudolph Valentino... ...they both had great, natural rhythm

Raft and Valentino danced at the same place doing "tea dances"....Rudy, in some legal troubles, got out of town and headed to in California in a touring group of players. George continued dancing and did work on Broadway and around Europe and finally went out California as vaudeville and the tea dance places declined , knocking around between 1928-1930. (He had a few minor film roles in NY and in 1927 Texas Guinan offered him a role in her movie. There had been other "Latin Lover" types already being tried ...Navarro, Cortez (from NY, and not a "latin" at all)....George himself lacked the "edge" of foreign mystery but he was approachable and handsome and the combination was just as alluring. And, boy, could he dance. What's interesting is that in NY as dancers, he saw Rudy as a depressed and lonely man...then shortly before Rudy died, they spent time with each other and Rudy asked George to come out to Long Island where he rented an estate. George recounts that Rudy "looked pretty bad" and as they approached the place, Rudy said: "Look at how far I've gone since we worked together. It's all been great, but I am a lonely man." They came full circle. A few week later he was dead. The Yablonsky bio from which this quote is taken is the authorized biography.

@@secretariatgirl4249 The jealous "Potato Heads" framed Valentino as gay but he was devoted to his wife Natasha who used him for her own ambitions. That, I suppose is the reason for his depressed state of mind as witnessed by George Raft.
It is interesting to note that John Gilbert, Valentino's successor as Hollywood's "Great Lover" also had his heart broken by an exploitative woman [Greta Garbo]. It is thought by many that their affair was the basis for "A Star is Born" Which goes to show that the off-screen shenanigans of the old Hollywood were every bit as fascinating as anything on the silver screen!

@@michaelchristian5089 Rudy was depressed and needy even before he met Rambova...you sound like someone I could have lengthy chats with about this complex man! Have been '
"channelling" him recently, prompting me to connect with my Italian immigrant heritage again...and my interest in early film history...have been getting out of print books etc and really have been immersed. My aunt was born 2 days after he died and I talk to her every day about all this..the prejudice, etc...

@@mybabba With George Raft, I like ANY movements he makes...hands and all.
Think in some old films, I saw him "moonwalking" and Backwards! And lots of "mashed potatoes", 😁 Charleston, etc. Not to mention his wonderfully smooth Latin dancing!
Oh hey, is that a Kewpie Doll I see? :))
