Regarding the mandarin oranges. You can make a light or medium syrup to cover the oranges, by using about 6 cups of water to 1 cup of sugar. This should help.

One of my Grandmas, used to make all us Grandkids eat orange peels dried by her pilot light on her oven,,,, she said they had all the good stuff in them,,,it was like eating leather, but we ate them! I still eat the peel,,,after I make sure they’re scrubbed up! Love your channel ❤️

I'm glad you did this, I haven't canned oranges yet, but was thinking I might. I've seen people use something that dissolves the bitter membrane, but then other people say it doesn't work. It's be so much more work to remove them by hand, but may be worth it!

I think I would try it if i can oranges again. I'd want to make sure it didn't do anything else to the orange or have health implications.

My favorite way to eat citrus peels is to candy them. It is a Christmas treat around here. You boil those peels to get rid of any bitterness. ( several water changes) Then you boil sticks/slices of peel in a syrup, they can then be rolled in granulated sugar or dried and dipped in dark chocolate. They are very old fashioned, but so yummy.

I have been thinking about canning oranges, still not sure. Glad you did this video though. I will have to think about my water solution. But, all in all, I so enjoy watching you guys. 🥰

I think if I do it again I will look into that emzyne. I think that little bit of pith made it slightly bitter. I would also add more honey. Thanks for watching!!!

I’ve been canning oranges, mandarins and grapefruit by soaking the peeled fruit in pectic enzyme to help remove the pith. I then use a light syrup. We’ve been pleased with the results.

I tried canning mandarins for the first time. I got a weird one piece lid though and the entire batch ruined. So, I started over. More peeling. The second batch did much better. Thanks for the instructions.

My hubby and I tried them and agreed that they dont taste identical to store bought because of the membrane. They weren't too sweet with the light syrup. It might taste interesting using pineapple juice as the canning liquid, kind of like orange pineapple juice. Thank you for the idea to can these. They definitely look like jewels on the shelf. Have you tried making homemade potpourri from dried flowers from your garden?

@@beadwright pineapple juice could be good! I haven't gone potpourri yet, but I'll be growing a lot more flowers/herbs for tea and medicines so i should have plenty of flowers to try it. I'll have to look into that.

The pith, has amazing health benefits for you. However it can turn pretty bitter when canned up. I am told to have next to none of the pith on them once they go into the jar. The only thing you could do is possibly add spices in order to counter balance them and then re can them up again. That way they are not a loss. I love to expirement as well. That is how we learn and as well as adapt and grow. No matter the age. By the way the orange top was a wonderful touch and it suited you well. Take care.

Spices might help. I'm thinking I'll use this batch in some baked goods or some other way. I'll definitely try adding some spices in the next batch. Someone else suggested using some orange juice in the liquid. I guess I'll keep experimenting. :) Thanks for the compliment....I have a feeling I'll be adding more orange to my wardrobe.

What if you added cloves, ginger and maybe cinnamon sticks before the canning process? And honey, lol. Maybe the mandarins wouldn't have that sour taste. Just an idea. Love your videos. Many blessings.

They actually have a ton of vitamins...especially lots of vitamin C. Some people eat them, but the only other way I've used them was to make orange marmalade. (Donny loves it, but I'm not thrilled with that particular jam/marmalade) For me, tea is the best way to enjoy them so far. I'm sure I'll be experimenting with all of those peels. :) Thanks for the compliment....he's been trying to get me to wear orange for a long time. :)

Maybe if you used orange juice to can them in, instead of water, they would have more flavor? Just bought a bag of mandarin oranges and am debating between canning or freezing them.
