❤❤❤
First time viewer! I enjoyed your video, will be watching more in the future.
I just can't get over Ruby's attention with the bones..lol.
She was VERY interested. Anytime I'm cooking, she's there hoping I'll drop something. Haha.
Ae your apple semi-dwarf or dwarf trees? Do you know the type of rootstock they are in? I really like the size of your apple trees.
I remember Grandma whitewashing our cellar when I was a kid. The family home began as a log cabin in the mountains til the later 1800s when it was picked up and moved over the mountaintop and down into the valleytown where it was set on a dug out cellar. Still there. She had a ceiling high (which isn't saying much) two tiered 'box' with potatoes, onions and apples. Miss that house, too many generations born and died in it. My root cellar (house built in 1955) has a dirt floor and concrete block walls. Nice cool room, most of the rest of the cellar is warmed slightly by an ancient gas furnace (not at all efficient like the new ones - Hah).
Wow....it sounds like you have some amazing memories. That old log home sounds wonderful. Root cellars are a wonderful way to store food. Thanks for watching and sharing your story with us.
Will you do a video on all your bee supplies? So interested in beekeeping!
We will probably be doing several bee videos in the spring/summer. We've done it for 5 years now and have learned from our early mistakes. Thanks for the suggestion.
@ excited to learn from you all! We ordered some beekeeping supplies today!
Nice, am Grace watching from Uganda. I will try it out right now i have some fresh garlic in the house.
Hello, Grace from Uganda. Thanks for watching and I hope your garlic turns out wonderful.
What a great journey your on. Family is always the best. ❤your channel. Robin in New Hampshire.
Hello, Robin in New Hampsire. Yes, we're on quite a journey and we love having family so close by. Thanks for watching.
1/25 just ordered a dehydrator and got down rabbit hole. 15 urs ago lived in tx, Roma tomatoes were insanely cheap but I was insanely busy. Cut them in quarters and put them on baking sheets tucked on dash of van . Moved van at noon to follow the sun and air out van. Planned to dry a second day but kids ate them all , I never got enough properly dried to ,did toss them in freezer planning to put on pizza. Youngest found them. Kids gone, will try again but now olive oil very expensive
Oh my....your kids must love tomatoes. I hope you're able to give it a try next year.
Have you tried ananas[pinapple) tomates?So delicious !!!
I've never tried them, but I just looked them up. They look so interesting that I might have to try a few this year. Thanks!
Happy belated Birthday. Hope you have a healthy happy new year of life. Do you know the channel Regenerative Gardening? She has a great soil receipe for blocking and tested a lot. Maybe there is something for you to try. Greetings from Germany. Madi
Thanks for the birthday wishes. I just stumbled on that channel a few days ago. Here recipe has a LOT of worm castings. I might try just using a lot more than I do now to see if that works. Someone gave me a bunch of the cell trays so I may do some of both this year and see which ones do better. Hello to Germany.🙂
This is really neat watching you do all them different things and all that beef stock woo. Wow we it’s gonna be some good cooking someday some food to eat. Thank you for sharing.❤
I am thrilled to have all of that beef stock back on the shelves....I was almost out.
Didn't really think about it but, I knew you can do it with beef. I wonder if you can do it with turkey and chicken ??? 🤔🤔 God bless 🙏
I'm not sure about turkey and chicken. For me it wouldn't be as important because we usually have plenty of chicken/turkey bones, but we only butcher once a year and have limited beef bones. I may have to experiment the next time I do chicken broth and see how it goes.
Thank you for the beef broth video. I have made beef broth, but never thought about doing 3 batches from the same bones. I will be doing this! I hate to waste. I haven't had to buy beef or chicken broth for 4 years. Your pantry challenge meals were yummy looking.
I was thrilled when I ran across Carter's video showing 4 batches. I'll always be doing 2-3 batches from here on.
We loved all of this!! You make it so interesting!! I'd love the Peanut Butter icing recipe to go with the cake. Sounds wonderful!! I'm so intrigued making bone broth. It is amazing. I love to can it to free up space in the freezer but the high temperature of canning breaks down the collagen so it is no longer gelatinous. I've seen folks do one batch and put it in freezer containers, then add more water and do a second batch to can since it will not have as much collagen. Super interesting and so nutritious! Then we bake the bones to dry them out and grind them for bone meal for the garden. No waste! Looking forward to the coming seed starting videos. Starting onions is great over buying onion sets. Thanks so much!!!
You just tought me something. I never realized that canning breaks down collagen. I use it mostly as an ingredient in recipes, but if I want it more for the collagen I'll be sure to freeze some in the future. How do you grind the bones? That would be amazing to have bone meal. Thanks! Here is the recipe for the Peanut Butter Icing. (I had several people ask for it so I also put it in the description....it is pretty yummy) Peanut Butter Frosting Recipe 3 C powdered sugar 1/3 C peanut butter 1/4-1/3 C milk 1 1/2 tsp vanilla Mix well and spread on cooled cake There will be more seed starting next week as well. Spring is coming!!!
What à wonderful pantry and very pretty😃
Thanks! I love going down there to get food each day.
Recipe for peanut butter frosting?
Here is the recipe for the peanut butter frosting. (and I also put it in the description.....since several people have asked for it.) Peanut Butter Frosting Recipe 3 C powdered sugar 1/3 C peanut butter 1/4-1/3 C milk 1 1/2 tsp vanilla Mix well and spread on cooled cake
@ thank you!
I just made beef broth last week. I’ve thought about doing it twice with the same bones, but didn’t. Next time I will for sure! Thanks for your wonderful videos!
I was so happy when I stumbled onto Carter getting more batches out of her bones. I'll always be doing 2-3 batches from here on. Thanks for watching.
Your choc. Cake recipe sounds like my mom's "Ol' Black Joe" cake. Now I did grow up in Lanc. Co. Enjoying your channel very much.
We're only about an hour from Lancaster. The cake recipe was a very old recipe, so who knows? We're glad you enjoy the channel. Thanks for watching.
Bone broth is good as a nutritional beverage also
I've read that, but never drank it plain. I'll have to give it a try.
Your meals looked delicious also! @@waardenburgfamilyfarm4764your meal
I love making beef & chicken stock. That cake sounds yummy! Have a great birthday bash with your family.?
Thanks! The cake was very yummy. It was wonderful to be with the family. Everyone was here except for one granddaughter who was not feeling well.
Looks great! If you used iodized salt, that is why it’s cloudy. No biggy!
No, it wasn't iodized salt....still a mystery. Thanks for trying.
We cut off the top of a bulb. Put it on foil then olive oil or butter wrap the bulb in the foil toss it on the pit or in the oven 200 for about 30 to 45 mins depending on the size. Recipe I saw on chef jack Owens channel. Tastes great do want to investigate further and see if you could can it for long term storage. Learned you can store meat in tallow. Could you do the same with garlic? Curiouser and couriouser😊. Today though we are dehydrating the roasted garlic. Can’t wait to see how that goes. We also crush the garlic into a paste cover it with honey. And take a spoonful before bed and brushing our teeth. It’s supposed to be good for the heart
Thanks! I may look into that. I am just now learning about tallow....I'm not sure if you could store garlic in there or not. I'll have to check into it. I'm hoping to get the fat from the butcher the next time we take our beef cattle in and try to render tallow. It's amazing how many health benefits garlic has.
Curious. Why do you bake the bone and meat first? It’s not necessary to do that.
It gives it a richer/deeper flavor. I think it also begins to soften up the marrow. I do it with the beef bones, but not when I do chicken bones.
Roasting the bones first makes the flavor so good!
@@waardenburgfamilyfarm4764 I’ll have to try that!
@@carolacton3440I will try that need time. This was the first I heard to bake first.
The broth looked great! I love homemade broths. Happy Birthday Brenda.
Thanks for the birthday wishes. Yes, homemade broth is so much better than anything you can get at the store.
All looks delicious! We adopted a puppy a few days ago so he takes most of my extra time at the moment. lol. but this video is a good reminder for me to get my broth going as well, as soon as I can. :) thanks!
Puppies are a lot of work....but SO worth it. Enjoy the puppy stage while it lasts.
I had to look up what 0 was in Celsius. -17 C. It's going to be getting cold in Alberta this weekend -31 Celsius for Sunday night. Which is -23 Fahrenheit Not much seems cold after last year's deep freeze that had Alberta sending out emergency alerts on all phones and tvs to turn off power, and still needing to get power from Montana, just so Alberta's power grid didn't crash. It went down to -50 C in some areas. (-58 in Fahrenheit) Everything froze, the water pipe from the well, the septic system, and none of our vehicles would start. But the power stayed on so we had heat. And our windows face south so I still had bright warm Alberta sunshine flooding in my windows everyday and my cat loved it. Even though it was a stupid kind of cold out side. Keep warm. During all of that deep freeze last year, my parents in their late 70's early 80's were lambing. And had lots of farm chores to do. As long as they could be there when the lambs were born and dry them off and get them nursing, they survived the freezing temperatures. Farmers do what they have to do. No matter the weather.
Now THOSE temps are COLD!!! Thank goodness you had heat the entire time. Ours got down to -9 F on night, but mostly hung around 0 F. Farming isn't fun when it's that cold. Weather here can be crazy. It's going to be 58F on Monday and then go back down to below freezing. I'm going to enjoy being outside on Monday while it's that warm.
Did you throw the short rib bones in the broth?!
I did! As soon as he pulled them out of the dutch oven, I tossed them into the roaster.
The ribs looked delicious. I have to find a gluten free egg noodle recipe to make the stroganoff! Thanks for the chocolate cake recipe! Great week of meals!¡❤
The ribs were delicious! Enjoy the cake.
I sit a fine strainer on the fat separator then fill my jars. Anything for less steps and less dishes!
Yeah, I'll try to do something like that next time. There were a LOT of dishes.
Awww Ruby wanted those bones so bad!
She sure did, but no bones for her. 😟 They are especially dangerous after they are cooked....they can splinter.
In her defense she wanted them before you cooked them 😂
nice big garden. makes me wish I had more room than my California backyard. I’ve seen cantaloupe on trellis work.
I tried canteloup on trellises in 2023, but my canteloup all got a virus and died so I didn't really get to see how it went. I may try again if I plant canteloupe. Our trellises are made from the old corn crib that we tore down so they are VERY strong.
Looks like a pink lady especially if it’s sour. Jelly looks amazing
It's possible. Whatever it is, the apples are delicious.
I like usine linoleum on the shelves as it protects the shelf and is easy to remove and clean.
That's a good idea. Thanks!
Im a first time viewer and im so happy i found your channel! The way you guys communicate reminds me of my grandparents when they still had their farm (grain farmers). This brings back so much nostalgia from my childhood ❤ im looking forward to watching more of your videos
We're so glad you found us...welcome to the farm. Thank you for your kind words!
I saw a video where a woman said potatoes will last much longer if layered in sand in cold storage. Have you ever tried that method? Was curious how well it actually worked or if anyone else has done that with great success.
I do layer my beets and carrots in damp sand in our root cellar. I've never tried it with potatoes. They seem to last well as long as the root cellar is cold enough. I'll check into that option. Thanks,
Loved your video! As a couple you have such wonderful comraderie, an absolute joy to watch. So glad I found this channel! I'm so envious of your potato peeler LOL Your potato soup looked wonderful.
Thanks for the kind words. We're glad you found us....welcome to the farm.
My good friends, Brenda and Don are even nicer in person. Here in Mechanicsburg, PA.
Thanks, Friend!
This is fantastic!!❤
Oh I just had to make this. I'm only using two large chicken breasts, but I think I made enough cheese stuffing for about ten! So, how else could I use this stuffing? Any ideas?
You might be able to use it to make stuffed shells with an italian tomato sauce over them.
@ that is a great idea!
Can lugols iodine be used
Which lavender do you grow? I’ve always wanted to grow lots of lavender and finally have one plant that has done very well. Is there a lavender that’s best to grow for the best fragrance and for these projects?
At this point, I'm not sure what type all of my lavender is. When I first started them from seed, there were several varieties, but I think the majority of the ones that made it are munstead. I think they are all very fragrent, but there are some that are best for culinary uses.
I decided to do the pantry challenge and then quickly realized...the whole winter is a pantry challenge for me. I put up a years' worth of pretty much everything in the Fall except for dairy that can't be frozen. I'd love to see what/how you freeze dry stuff...I just got one and I'm looking for ideas!!! Fun video..thank you!!
That's us too....it's not much of a stress to eat from our preserved food. I'm still learning the ins and outs of freeze drying, but hope to do more videos about it in the future. Thanks for watching.
Happy birthday Brenda! Thanks for sharing your always delightful videos.
Thanks for the birthday wishes!
FROZEN Fruit & Veggies last longer, if you are in the city!
In addition to your canned soups you could start putting together freeze dried soups in a jar. I’ve done this where I have powdered all my ingredients and it’s like adult sand art 😍 it definitely has the pretty factor ! For example, I made a broccoli cheddar soup mix- it contains (all FD) broccoli, cheese, milk, onion, garlic, potatoes and a celery- just add water to desired consistency. Your larder and root cellar are an absolute dream.
So far I've only freeze-dried single ingredients, but I REALLY need to do soups and other meals. Thanks for the suggestion.
@@waardenburgfamilyfarm4764 I had them each freeze dried as single ingredients, then powdered and put them together
Kudos to you! This is the BEST granola. recipe out there. I've been making it. for 5 years. Almost exactly the same way. It's almost identical to Alton Brown's recipe. Our family eats it every single morning. I make 2 gallon bags every 3-4 weeks using one entire container of oats. When the kids visit I mix granola, yogurt and whatever fruit I have all together and put in jelly jars in fridge so they eat that instead of junk. Kids love eating out of mason jars!
I love that it can be changed in so many ways by adding different fruits, nuts...... I'll have to try the mason jar with my grandkids. Thanks for the idea.
No need to blanch?
The oil keeps the potatoes from turning gray in the freezer. If there's no oil, they should be blanched. Sorry I didn't make that clear.
Thanks for sharing! 😊
Thanks for watching!
I love your passion for this! I’m the exact same way with my canning cupboard my husband built.
I think it's one of the best feelings to see all of the food you have preserved. Good hubby---building you a canning cupboard!
