    As a guitar player, these guys who play 6 and 8 string basses scare the shit out of me. Those bass string are massive and the reach required on those wide necks is just freaky wide.
    This bloke is wicked by the way!

      I play 5 string bass and I can't understand how you guitarists play with such thin strings and narrow string spacing! Guess it's just a matter of getting used to an instrument.

    A year later and after somewhere between my 40th and 50th time viewing this video, I am still fascinated at what I consider to be a flawless and charismatic performance of unique style, technique, and originality! Earl is so good that I've noticed that he either inspires other bass players or discourages them! At the time of the recording of this video, this was a hell-a-vah level to have achieved at the age of 18! Those who have ears, let them hear!

    I never heard nobody at the Guitar Center give it up like this! What Earl is doing is giving us something and I, for one, appreciates it! After all, why do we develop our gifts that God gave us? Do we call it showing off or is a tool to lift spirits? In the bible David played a stringed instrument for a grieving King Saul and it brought him out of grieving! I am delighted every time I view this video and hear this incredible piece of mastery and I visit often because it's in my favorites!

    Hey no problem man, from the perspective of someone who grew up listening to gospel/hymns in an African-American environment this solo/piece really touches home. The way he puts together the chords and melody is very skillful and brings out the emotion of the song. I think it always nice to have positive dialog, your view point is well taken.

    Thank you Tony. Reading this back, I'd like to add that I make a difference between mastering MUSIC and mastering an instrument. A bass is a wooden plank with some vibrating metal attached. Learning to make that plank do what you want is just a motor skill which any heatlhy determined person can master over time. Mastering music as a whole, is something different and infinitely more complicated. I think MuscleDad talks about mastering music while drudeken means mastering the bass guitar.

    So true, I like to think of a bass as a pyramid. You have a great structured piece of architecture. The bass being the flat bottom of the pyramid providing a grounding and a firm support for those above. You can of course flip the pyramid and balance it on it's point once and a while for show ( Bass solos, other pieces ) but to much showmanship of this can lead to the fall of the pyramid.
    Bassist deserve a little more respect in my mind and your comment hit the nail on the head ;)

    Apart from the jazz solo slot, up until the 1970s bassists had to stick to being the rhythm section foundation, but the advent of the synthesizer saw the bassist freed up to experiment with different roles - percussive and melodic - so you had the emergence of Stanley Clark and Mark King who could play freely while the synth did the foundational work. Now the bassist can play a whole song as a feature, something that really started with Jaco. This is a nice rendition of a praise song.

    • @kingdeedee
      @kingdeedee 9 років тому +15

      1. The octave range on a bass is similar to a piano. Right in the sweet spot. Notes low enough to play good rhythm and notes high enough to play good lead.
      2. If you're referring to the fact that he's using a six string bass, you have to take into consideration that they're not tuned like a guitar. It's BEADGC instead of EADGBe.
      3. The guy might have grown up on the bass.

    • @fooman65
      @fooman65 9 років тому +1

      all i mean is that if it was a guitar it would sound really nice than just a bass plonking away. i'm all for experimentation and stuff but original is sometimes best, ie 6 string guitar and 4 string bass they work because they work.

    • @kingdeedee
      @kingdeedee 9 років тому +6

      fooman65 that's your opinion. I like how he's using a 6-string bass like this. It has a piano-like vibe to it and it sounds nice and full. But I can't force anything on you. To each his own. Right?

    Finally! Somebody gets it! I'd rather be a true musician than just a "role player" who only does what's expected of them. It's that kind of small-minded thinking that causes players to not advance artistically and musically. It's all about learning as much as you can about music, regardless of your instrument of choice and then representing the music you love(no matter the style) on your chosen instrument.

    "Popular" does not equal "best". It's music for the masses.
    It's the same with sophisticated humor. Some people get it, others don't. :)

    That was very cool and original. I never heard a jazzy chord melody played on the bass like that. This guy's got major chops.
