The thing I love about isolated guitar tracks is it lets you know they are still human. You can hear all the little noises that you, as a player, are always trying to get rid of when you try and play it yourself. You come to realize that most of those little nuances just get buried in the mix.
Yeah. That's what I am talking about. This track was recorded perfectly. You, I and Randy could not miss, fuck up, or do it perfectly everytime live. Hell Randy Rhodes was even better live. Those pinches were perfect timing and not overdone. Randy Rhodes was the Guitar God. If I am not mistaken he was in Quiet Riot. Cut on Feel the Noise is so far from Crazy Train and Mr.Crowly. But when the lead singer of Black Sabbath hires you, you will will go. Ozzy is one of those vocalists that just screams dark, heavy and desperation. To be honest I don't have one Sabbath album post Ozzy and I love Black Sabbath.

Revelation Mother Earth and Diary Of A Madman are two of the most perfect songs ever written. Actually the landscape probably wouldn't be different in the way you think. He was quitting rock and roll to study his passion which was classical guitar. That's why he was leaving Ozzy's band. Classical was his true passion.
Two Otters No doubt he would’ve left Ozzy. He also was looking into doing session work, and he had compositional skills that could transcend any genre including classical. Look at the variation on a theme he did with Leo Brouwers’ Study Number 6 in Diary of a Madman. Randy was just as great as an original composer. So, yes, the landscape of classical was affected but I think he still would’ve contributed to popular music as at least a session player.

That picture of Randy sitting on the couch always bums me out... it was taken at the Santa Monica Civic Arena on New Year's Eve 1982. We lived in Azusa, and my dad didn't want to deal with the traffic on New Year's Eve... so I missed what would have been the second time seeing Randy play... I had seen him in June 1981 in Phoenix with Motorhead opening. This New Year's Eve show had the band 'Girl' opening... that was Phil Collen from Def Leppard's band. At least I got to see Randy once.
Randy’s Mom owned a music school and the guitar teacher told Mrs. Rhodes, I’m sorry I can’t teach Randy anything else on guitar, he has mastered the instrument. Randy was 10 years old, and Randy began teaching guitar at his Mom’s school while in public school.
Randy, died 3 weeks before they were supposed to play freedom hall in johnson city tn. I will never forget getting the news completely devastated that we lost him. Truly an amazing guitarist and greatly missed.
Not as mind-blowing as it sounds. This is actually common practice in the recording industry. Using two mics on the same amp. but one take, can sound like one really BIG guitar, but doesn't provide the stereo image required. So, especially for rhythm, you record the part twice and them hard pan it left and right.
Smurfman256 when you separate the two tracks you can hear differences, using one recording and two mics will not produce the noises heard in one channel vs the other. Physically his hand, pick or any other thing that made the scratching on the string can be heard separately. if you read any excerpts from sound engineers/ recording studios he worked with they will identify that he did indeed double track on separate takes playing over top himself.
I read somewhere that some days Randy would turn his amp up full blast and just rock out. His neighbors, or at least some of them loved it and said they could always tell it was Randy cause he had such a distinct sound and his playing was so lively.
Hearing this makes me realize that on some level I always believed that the guitar parts on this track were pieced together from like 20 different takes, because who could just tear through that whole thing so perfectly?
I met Randy Rhoads at my Quaalude doctors waiting room back in 1977. The infamous Dr. Dickerman of North Hollywood who was dying of cancer that allegedly wanted his family to be taken care of. I could put on a hat and say I was someone else half a hour later and he'd write me another prescription. The parking lot was a market place of Quaaludes. Randy was an unpretentious, soft spoken young man that had an angelic quality to him. His mother owned Burbank music and he was considered the best guitar teacher in the valley before fame. This was b4 the LAPD even knew what "ludes" were. The good old days.
The creativity and virtuosity displayed here is mind-boggling, but it's even MORE SO when you consider Randy DOUBLED all this! That's not stereo chorus splitting a single track into two. NO...It's Randy playing the parts a 2nd/3rd time, absolutely nailing the original in notes, tone, timing, and expression. Just astonishing!

Utter respect. Tone quality is most admirable as well as small yet very important details. Solo is really amazingly fast. Neither of the followers could ever do justice cause sol they do is leave notes behind and carry on. 50 years ahead, thank you Randy.
to those listening to this "guitar track" and marvelling at his great thick awesome sound that everyone simply can't get "live" remember this: you are NOT listening to a "guitar track"...you are listening to multiple tracks combined into one...including the solo section. There are at least 2 but most likely THREE separately played tracks playing almost indistinguishably exactly the same parts. Randy was a master of playing a part and then being able to repeat the same performance over again, On "Blizzard" The tone of the guitar is quite thin and midrange heavy...which makes it cut through the mix without any of the bottom heavy "chunk" found in many modern tones...repeating the same parts and triple tracking the guitar adds the "thickness" without making the guitar muddy, something Iommi used to do as well on many of the earlier albums...except with Iommi, the double tracked solos are never identical or synched up, so it's quite obvious. altogether, Randy's approach gave him a HUGE sound in every way...even when you are listening to what appears to be ONE guitar....
There's so much creativity going on in the guitar parts of this song, it's, well, crazy: the opening riff; the driving drone note providing percussion with the verse chords; the chorus fills; the solo; etc. And his layering of a few guitar tracks to create that full, rich sound. Just brilliant.
The main track is in the middle, then two separate takes panned hard left and right IIRC... doesn't sound heavy by todays standards, but RR had a great live tone.
this song has always blown my mind. but as i’ve gotten older i’ve come to be completely astonished by the riff that’s played behind the verse. not only is it insanely creative but as a guitar player it’s beyond impressive to hear someone chug so precisely and make a hard rock riff sound so beautiful. the licks he adds in is also something that hasn’t been done by many one man guitar bands. he finds every space to add in lead parts while laying down a perfect rhythm for 5 mins straight! Randy’s tone is just something else. I know he achieved through multi-tracking guitars but it how he did it that made is so unique. I’m pretty sure there’s a few different tones dialled on each track and then when they mixed it gives you that insanely overdriven but somehow clean and defined sound. Plus his technique was off the scale so that would have been a huge factor as to how he could make it sound so clean and precise. Just makes you wonder how his playing would have evolved over the years had he not been killed so tragically young.

Randy inspired me to want to be like him when I really became guitar obssessed at 13 yrs old. I felt proud when I finally could play this song. This is amazing to hear the isolated guitar version. I'm still amazed even now after all these years. Still trying to play it like him too! Lol! He keeps us all feeling young.

His tone on this track is crazy! Legend has it they put his Marshall stack in the basement and had several mikes at various distances.. Listening to this isolated track I realize if they had thrown some chorus on here it would be very close to Tom Scholtz’s Boston sound... Anyone else hear that?
That hammer on and off -trills in the middle of the solo is like a two handed tap. I don’t think anyone does them as good as randy, he owned it. Fucking legend period.

RR was doing this when he was 22-23... he was giving lessons in his teens. Randy was a trained musician and perfectionist that played metal.
And FYI, he recorded the Diary album around the same time.. they just released it later.

Utter respect. Tone quality is most admirable as well as small yet very important details. Solo is really amazingly fast. Neither of the followers could ever do justice cause sol they do is leave notes behind and carry on. 50 years ahead, thank you Randy.
to those listening to this "guitar track" and marvelling at his great thick awesome sound that everyone simply can't get "live" remember this: you are NOT listening to a "guitar track"...you are listening to multiple tracks combined into one...including the solo section. There are at least 2 but most likely THREE separately played tracks playing almost indistinguishably exactly the same parts. Randy was a master of playing a part and then being able to repeat the same performance over again, On "Blizzard" The tone of the guitar is quite thin and midrange heavy...which makes it cut through the mix without any of the bottom heavy "chunk" found in many modern tones...repeating the same parts and triple tracking the guitar adds the "thickness" without making the guitar muddy, something Iommi used to do as well on many of the earlier albums...except with Iommi, the double tracked solos are never identical or synched up, so it's quite obvious. altogether, Randy's approach gave him a HUGE sound in every way...even when you are listening to what appears to be ONE guitar....

There's so much creativity going on in the guitar parts of this song, it's, well, crazy: the opening riff; the driving drone note providing percussion with the verse chords; the chorus fills; the solo; etc. And his layering of a few guitar tracks to create that full, rich sound. Just brilliant.
The opening lick was a finger warm up exercise he used with his students back in the day. Crazy...

The main track is in the middle, then two separate takes panned hard left and right IIRC... doesn't sound heavy by todays standards, but RR had a great live tone.

this song has always blown my mind. but as i’ve gotten older i’ve come to be completely astonished by the riff that’s played behind the verse. not only is it insanely creative but as a guitar player it’s beyond impressive to hear someone chug so precisely and make a hard rock riff sound so beautiful. the licks he adds in is also something that hasn’t been done by many one man guitar bands. he finds every space to add in lead parts while laying down a perfect rhythm for 5 mins straight! RIP Randy Rhoads🤘🏼

Randy’s tone is just something else. I know he achieved through multi-tracking guitars but it how he did it that made is so unique.
I’m pretty sure there’s a few different tones dialled on each track and then when they mixed it gives you that insanely overdriven but somehow clean and defined sound.
Plus his technique was off the scale so that would have been a huge factor as to how he could make it sound so clean and precise.
Just makes you wonder how his playing would have evolved over the years had he not been killed so tragically young.

Randy inspired me to want to be like him when I really became guitar obssessed at 13 yrs old. I felt proud when I finally could play this song. This is amazing to hear the isolated guitar version. I'm still amazed even now after all these years. Still trying to play it like him too! Lol! He keeps us all feeling young.

His tone on this track is crazy! Legend has it they put his Marshall stack in the basement and had several mikes at various distances.. Listening to this isolated track I realize if they had thrown some chorus on here it would be very close to Tom Scholtz’s Boston sound... Anyone else hear that?

That hammer on and off -trills in the middle of the solo is like a two handed tap.
