15+ years of fun with Mokee, my constant companion for all seasons. Loved his walks, adventures and face in any breeze, especially when the snow was blowing, going to work. He had three crates he called home and only the coolest room would suffice Looking back, more training to control the Wheaten Greet'n would have helped. After his last birthday, his spirit hung with me for another 6 months, then he let go. There was always a sweet and fun loving person behind those eyes. Wheaten's are another canine gift for those of us fortunate enough to be selected by them.
I had my Murphy for 11 wonderful years, full of joy and total love. We lost him so suddenly and our life is very very sad without him. Can only consider another wheaten, they are amazing family members. Xxx
Great dogs, my Murphy just crossed at nearly 19. Never got sick. Stayed active all along. They have a lot of personality.
I'm so sorry to hear about Murphy. Did you used to do some videos with him? I remember watching a dog named Murphy a few years ago.
@@TakeTheRide not really just acouple. Im kinda regretting that.
@@osovagabundo1 Just brought home my wheaten four days ago. Hes such an easy pup. Named him Murphy. Kind of sad they docked his tail, i dig the long tails. Still an awesome breed. I would be over the moon if my pup stayed around for 19 years.
@@kevindonelan6680 thats great! I took great. Care and we had very good communication. He had a very high prey drive. Still chasing and getting critters at 16 and swimming, jumping up in the car til the end. He was never sick. I got lucky. I gave him full body sctratches the stimulate the lymph system. Its a great bonding activity
Ours just passed at 18. His name was Hooch. He absolutely made our lives better and he is greatly missed. Best dogs ever. Their intelligence is off the charts. Almost human like. Man I miss my Smoo. My heart goes out to you.
We have a WT called Chester. He is 6 years old and still a puppy at heart. He.jumps up so much when grandchildren, family and even strangers visit. Looks exactly like Sugar. Such a lovable breed of dog.
We have a Whoodle that is differently abled. He has a serious spinal defect and requires a wheelchair to walk. He’s gotten so good in his wheelchair he can run now! He is getting swimming therapy and he’s not too crazy about the pool yet. He is a lovely, good natured dog and a real beauty. He makes my heart smile. ❤️. Thanks for sharing your baby. Wheaton terriers are beautiful dogs.
We love our 3 yo SCWT Baxter.
We learned him not to jump from the beginning so no wheaten greeting ☺️
Still problems with recall (we tried everything) but luckily he always comes back. :) Very stubborn!!
He hates water and hot weather too.
He is not a foodie (like Labradors) so there’s always food in his bowl and he only eats when he is really hungry.
He is extremely friendly especially w other dogs, he loves to play. He thinks every dog is nice and wants to play.
He follows me everywhere, he is a real FRIEND🥰
He loves our guests too, he feels comfortable with everyone.
He is very funny, and has a great-funny personality. Great connection between him and us humans :)
Fantastic dog, very special 💙
We too have a Baxter. He is 15 weeks old. We just love him. So happy to have a wheatie.
The Soft Coat Wheaton Terrier genes are strong. We have a Whoodle named Skipper. He is 25% Wheaton and 75% Poodle, but he behaves very much like Sugar. We talked to someone who owned many Wheatons over the years who described the Wheaton as very loyal, but independent. They like to be with their people but they are not big on cuddling. This is exactly what we’ve experienced with Skipper. He is very playful with us and with other dogs. He is loved dearly.
I have one, and she is the opposite. More dominant wheaton terrier than Poodle.
I'm looking up every video I can on this breed as we recently adopted a sweet 4 year old wheaten terrier from our local shelter. It's good to know it's normal for her breed to sleep so much and not that there's something wrong like I was worried about. She's great with our kids and is trying to make friends with the cat but he's indifferent to everyone but me. We've only had her a few days but already she's part of the family.
How did it end up with your cat? My new wheaten has attacked with intent to kill mine out of the blue twice in 6 weeks. She's gone away for training. Hoping they can help us, I love her so much.
@amythoming7011 My cat was the aggressor in my house. He would attack the poor dog for breathing too loud. We would try to correct it, but cats are stubborn. Unfortunately (or fortunately for the dog, I guess), he passed recently. She's still super sweet and kinda dumb. I'm pretty sure she has 2 braincells in her head. One it working double time, and the other is eating crayons and glue. Couldn't ask for a sweeter girl, though.
Just lost my Koda 3 months ago. She would have been 13 this month. Mouth cancer. Miss my companion. Was awesome on road trips, perfect for an apartment, everybody's friend, my best friend. Was not a barker unless you said, "Come in!" Was as calm in an apartment as a cat would be. Never took her to a groomer's - always scizzor cut her instead. Left her ears long, and loved her hair shaggy. Don't like the Wheaton standard grooming look. After a cut, she would look 3 times smaller lol. Was "puppy-like" until her last two weeks and you could still see her trying. Beautiful brown eyes, full of love and devotion. Would like another but afraid that no other Wheaton would be able to measure up. Best dog ever! Not easily replaced.
Very helpful, I’m happy to hear that my new Wheaten pup “Charlie Murphy” is going to have similar personality treats that’s he has now as he gets older. He’s definitely loves giving me a wheaten greeting waking me up every morning licking my face to wake me up. He’s very happy when I wake up. I’ve taken him with me everywhere for the last 2 weeks, since day 1, he hasn’t left my side, work, shopping, gas stations, Long morning & Night walks(No leash needed, he just follows me) basically house broken, knows how to sit. He loves car rides, sticks his head out window for 15 min then he falls asleep on my lap. Loves going out on boat, when I catch a fish & it gets close to boat he jumps in and try’s to bite Big fish!! H e sleeps a lot. Question I have for you;; What color was Sugar when she was a puppy? Did the color change a lot? Charlie is 85% black with dark & light brown face, Redish brown paws, his under coat is looking like he’s going to have great hair, just curious & excited to see his transformation into an adult dog!! He’s become my side kick, with me everywhere I go!! He loves other people, dogs, cats, kids, all around a really chill good dog!! Definitely falls asleep quickly, legs up in air, it funny!!!
I got my Wheaten this past January and I LOVE HER!! So many of the things you said was so true! Please do more videos with more Wheaten tips!
It sounds like she is the boss!! Beautiful pet. I'll love to see her when she's playing and being active too. Thanks for sharing.
We lost our 11 yr old wheaten Ellie in August to kidney disease. Listening to you talk about Sugar reminds so much of her. She was so funny and always on the watch at our front window. Deer, cats and the UPS guy, she would just go crazy. We loved her so much and miss her terribly. Thanks for sharing your life with Sugar, please do more videos.
So sorry for your loss 😢
I just met my first Wheaton Terrier. Great video very informational. Love the fact they don’t shed.
Oh my gosh, Sugar sounds just like my wheaten Sundance. Everything you said I checked off except for the off the leash scenario. I haven’t tried that yet with mine. Yes, he likes naps, yes, he likes to jump up, yes, he likes to pull and lead on walks, yes, he has nipped occasionally and we are working on it, yes he loves to watch the windows for people and dogs. We too close curtains to stop the overexcitement. He has been a pleasure and blessing in every way and is really a sweet gentle baby boy who loves sleeping with all four legs in the air! Also, I could never use a kennel with him as he disliked it so. Good luck with your beautiful darling girl, Sugar. Thanks for sharing your adventure with us.
I lost my first Wheaton at age 5 but now we have Bailey who is a year. Unlike Paddy, he loves water & his crate except for bedtime. Loves to be outside with the neighborhood kids & bouncing around with other dogs. I have to keep the front door shut because he jumps & scratches at the glass to get out with everyone that goes by
We are picking up our puppy on 7/25 and your video is so helpful. So sweet too.
Where are you getting your Wheaton from? I’m looking and can’t find any blonde ones like this?
We got our Wheaton from Wild West Wheatons in Dragoon, AZ. The owner has a cute facility. I found her on Facebook.
so much personality and very cute..................the dog seems pretty cool too
The wheaten greeting is 100% a big thing and makes it difficult to have people over that don't like dogs. I use a frosted film on the windows at the front of house to keep mine from barking at every dog. Only issue I have is mine has an alpha streak so when confronted with a dog that doesn't like to play or is aggressive, he tends be very reactive to it. Contrast this with my previous kerry blue terriers that all have tended to ignore aggressive dogs.
Lost our Wheaton, Chelsea, this past fall at age 14. They are wonderful dogs, Sugar is very cute!
Nice video. Thanks for sharing. Your puppy is adorable. Best wishes.
All of this is true, Very hallmark of my Thriller Michelle, (17 years RIP)
🥺🥺 our wheaten (Desmond) is the sweetest doggo he’s turning 14 this year! We did the kennel but needed to be in our room right next to us! He does jump to greet people even at his age… yes he’s a terrible walker he only walks well if he has his leash in his mouth 🤣 though he can’t walk that long and will just lay down when he doesn’t want to walk anymore haha! He has never nipped at anyone, when we had my brothers newborn over he was very intrigued and didn’t know how to act. Also when he was a baby he was easy to train! Only had one accident in the house and that’s all, they’re very smart..so he shakes his collar to let us know he needs to go out (we did not train him to do this). He does NOT love the water 🤣 he’s afraid of it and will not go swimming but I think because when he was 2 and on our boat on the lake he fell in and freaked out (even tho he had a life vest on). Thanks for sharing! 🥰
Getting a 2 1/2 month tmrw. Any tips for potty training from personal experience?
Very informative. Thanks! I have a Miniature Schnauzer, which I love, but I would also like a larger dog. Your Wheaten is adorable.
Wow this lady is classic beautiful, like no matter the time or place in history or the world she’d be considered extremely beautiful.
We had a wheaten back in the 1990s. They are absolutely mental.
they are great craaic
Hey,
I‘m from Germany. I search for Infos about the soft coated wheaten Terrier. Please more videos about your wheaten!
She's beautiful! We are picking up our wheaten pup on Sunday. To say I'm excited would be an understatement 😆.
Ooo how exciting!! 😍😍
@DASO MILITIA Boy we named him Bart after Bart Simpson 😂
She is adorable! Can't wait to get mine :)
Thank you!
My 8 year old Boy/Girl twins there mother got there Dan Dan as a puppy just before she got pregnant with the Twinsso I guess DanDan is 9 going on 10. She has loved on and been the protecter of the twins before they were ever born. They are her human kids and she lets you know that to. She’s always been gentle to them she probably was who TOUGHT them to crawl she’s very intelligent has never bitten nipped at or growled at either twin. She’s been so motherly and I believe that she has convinced his self that he’s Human also it’s still adorable watch him play and interact with the twins best dog ever.
We have adopted our 1 year old Lilly a Soft. Coated Wheaten Terrier now with us for 3 month. Your video was extremely helpful. The tip on the harness from Amazon will be ordered soon! Thank you Lilly and Candis
November 12, 2023. 4:30 pm Our Wheaten terrier acts exactly the same way. She’s great in the house, outside of the barking. I don’t know if it’s being protective, or jealous, but when another dog gets near me and I Pat it she rungs over with a snappy ruff to chase the dog away. 😅 now I’m afraid to let people pat her when she is on a leash.
I had my Soft Coated Wheaton Terrier for 15 years. He was a wonderful dog. I never had a dog before and I will certainly never get another. There is nothing that compares to the genuine affection of a Wheaton. His name was Mons Buttons Petit. I miss him everyday. I highly recommend them as your pet of choice. Mr. Buttons only ate prescription food and treats were home made. You will never regret getting a S.C Wheaton Terrier. Everyone her met him loved him. His groomer named HOPE . No one ever groomed him but her. Very fine dog indeed. 🫥
I'm currently looking into different dog breeds at the moment that could both be an active companion and trained as a service dog and I've gotta say the Wheaten Terrier is one I'm finding myself quite drawn to. Couple of questions about them though. How easy do you reckon it would be to teach a Wheaten Terrier to be calm around people and not perform a Wheaten greeting every time they meet someone? I'm not meaning completely train them not to jump and get excited all the time, but if they knew they had a job to do that meant they need to be calm while working, would it be possible? And what's their chasing/hunting instinct like? Is it wishful thinking to hope they could coexist with peacefully with guinea pigs, chickens and cats if socialised well from a puppy?
Sugar is precious :) If i ever have an opportunity to have a dog, it would be a wheaten terrier
Have a Wheaten for the last 6+ years. We adore our Murphy and he sleeps with us every night. After six months of misery with kennel training, we haven’t looked back. He’s one of the friendliest dogs I’ve had (golden retriever and Airedale). Ours is definitely a lover, not a fighter. Grooming is a daily brushing though to avoid matting in the fur. An investment in a grooming table is a must as they get used to it over time.
When walking them, always have a small bag of chicken with you and they’ll never leave your side. Agree with you, a fantastic joy to be with and a blessing to the family.
Hello, wheatens and airdales are both considered as low shedders. Would you recommend one more than the other for a slightly allergic person? And how were they different during training?
I would never sleep with a dog again after doing it for 14 years.
I just lost mine and I am heartbroken. What did you feed your dog to be so healthy. Do you have a breeder that you worked with?
She is beautiful! My girl is also 4 1/2! Five on 2/13.
Sugar will be 5 Nov. 30th! ❤️
Since you do keep
The shorter cut. Do you feel
Eating and drinking is still
Quite messy ?
I had two wheaten terrier sisters growing up. One had to be euthanized in 2016 due to an undermined illness, and the other had to be put down in mid 2023 due to old age.
😢❤❤❤
On my 3rd wheaten now! Luda. First two hated swimming, can’t keep Luda out of water! So that’s hit or miss for the breed. Great breed, not a leash walking breed tho! Need to run miles EVERY day. Get a different breed if your not active
Yes, our male loves to go! He does take a quick nap after playing hard - but, no he doesn't sleep even close to 20 hours. Use a lead to keep dog calm on walks & in the home. I groom at home with a beautiful full coat, irish coat.
My fave ‘new’ breed
Hi! We are researching terrier breeds (we're partial to them) and I was wondering what the exercise needs are of a wheaten? We have a Jack Russell and adore him, but he does not require much exercise. We just play tug with him and he loves it!
I just take my wheaten Terrier out and throw balls, and she loves to do that. My wheaton loves to swim... Go lay in a creek, I just ran to her off in the shower when we get home. These dogs really are pretty mellow around the the house. They don't shed so I can wear black as much as I want and I don't get dog hair all over my clothes when she wants to lay in my lap.
Very helpful! I am getting one tomorrow :) a female! Does she still jump up? Do they smell?
I have a 3yr old wheaten Rocket. What do you give Sugar for an upset stomach
I have had two wheaties, our Archie passed last week suddenly. We have been broken hearted.
Awe! I’m so sorry to hear that… :( I can’t imagine. ❤️
Love my Lola!
best dog ever
Devi, how is Sugar with guarding you and/or your home?
Sadly I think she would greet most intruders like a friend 🤪
Have any of you found that your wheaten is a bit mouthy. As in they’re clearly smart as heck for a dog and gentle/non destructive, but he just loves having my fingers in my mouth and taking me to places he likes or things he wants in the house. Near perfectly trained otherwise.
Mines name is teagen and I got her eight years ago
I know this is a crazy question, but do they smell a lot? I have only had mini-Poodles and they don't smell. I bathed them weekly, but I'm concerned if so much hair will cause a smell. I'm asking because one of my mini-Poodles passed away last year so I'm going to get a new puppy and I'm thinking about a Wheaten terrier. Thank you for 4 any insight you can give.
Mine doesn’t! I’ve actually had guests say, I love that she doesn’t smell! Obviously if she’s wet, she smells wet but I rarely bathe her & no bad smell! 🥰
@@Devrajoy thank you so much for your response. That's what folks always say about my mini-poodles so I want to continue that trend. That's awesome that you don't even have to bath her that often. I'll send pics if I get the one I'm looking at. Thank you again.
What kind of food are you feeding your dog ?
I haven’t been able to find a food my wheaten likes and he’s 2 and a half
He's playing games with you , you choose the food, he won't starve 😂
Do you have any issues with separation anxiety? My husband and I are looking to get a wheaten but read that can be a big issue for them.
Nope none
Do they travel well? I travel a lot and would love a dog that loves traveling
Sugar has done really well in the car! She’s pretty excited for the first while but then calms down. Loves to stick her head out the window!
Sugar is lovely
Anyone know any breeders in California?
My husband and I are considering a Wheaten. Did you find yours hard to train? Some say they are difficult dogs to train for (walking without pulling on a leash, not jumping up when greeting, barking, basic behaviors, etc etc.). Just curious on what your experience has been training your Wheaten to be a pleasant and behaved family member. Your pooch seems very calm and well behaved, at least on camera!
I only did a 6 week training course with her… I wish looking back I would have done some more though… Going for walks can be stressful when she’s on leash or in our yard as she’ll bark at dogs passing by… when she’s off leash at a park, she rarely barks… I can’t tell if maybe she’s just being extra protective…
She does still jump but what we’ve found really helps is putting our hands behind our barks and turning our bodies away from her when she wants to jump.. she immediately goes into sit position and tucks in as close as possible to get that physical touch. 🥰
She did great in training and I really think they do love to learn. However we have yet to teach her to fetch… she prefers keep away. Lol
Best thing we ever did was buy our Wheaten
You forgot to mention that they can be very stubborn. We have had 2 wheatens
You said wheaten terriers sleep for 20 hours? My pup he is a wheaten and he is wild. He only sleeps if he's bored. He sleeps about 14 hours maybe. Probably because he is a puppy.
Does she shed
We fosterd this guy was abandoned by previous owners
How often do they have to go to the groomers? and what is the average price range?
We take sugar in every 8-10 weeks and it’s around $70. We ask for a puppy cut. :)
@@Devrajoy thank you so much!
YUP! Haha
Do these dogs shed really bad??? Our guy just started last few monthes
Wheaten Terriers are hypoallergenic and don't shed.......your's is not a pure bread lol
Yep, they don't shed but small amount of fluff can be seen when I've brushed her every night .
How do you train her to do poop?
And...... and..... and. ......They dont moult
Test
