My family had a Westie when I was a baby, he was stubborn and very independent! We lived on a mountain and he would be gone all day and come home around the same time my dad got home! Fast forward 30 years later and I had 2 brothers. One was very stubborn and his brother was very naughty! Fenway would chase everything, cycles, motorbikes, people, cats, birds, he loved the thrill of the race. His brother Oakee was too stubborn to race or chase anything, but he would wait for his brother to come back and then give him a smack for running off! They were my boys and I miss them everyday ❤
My daughter owns two Westies. My Westie, Sophie, died last Sept. 2022 of cancer at 12 yrs-old. You described every characteristc to a “T.” They truly don’t realize they’re small dogs, as Sophie messed w/ a Great Dane at a dog park. It was actually hilarious watching the Great Dane get down on her level and let out a loud, strong “woof.” Sophie didn’t move a muscle for 5 mins….taught her. I guess one thing you left out, is how entertaining they are, like little comedians. She made me laugh more than any person ever has. I have MS, so training another puppy is out of the question, so I’ll just enjoy visits from my daughter’s two babies. I truly enjoyed your video: It also keeps Westies close to my heart.
My Westie, Winston Bentley MacNab passed 5/8/24 heart failure 15 1/2, we are CRUSHED my wife and I . He had friend down the street that was a Great Dane it was very funny to see them interact!
@@Brenda-jf2pe I’m deeply sorry for the loss of your beloved baby. Westies have a way of wrapping their paws around our hearts, and not letting go. I can only imagine how comical it must have been watching your pup and the Great Dane together. I still miss Sophie, but she brought our family unbelievable joy, love and laughter. You gave Winston an awesome life, and he was blessed having y’all give him his best life. God comfort you daily.
I'm on Westie #5 - Trotsky. My parents started in 1964 with Bobby (whom I had named after Greyfriar's Bobby - a book about a cairn terrier, I think, in Edinburgh), proceeded to Samson, and then I've personally had Angus, Mackenzie and now, Trotsky. The breed is not for everyone, but once you get used to them, it's hard to go for anything else. Their personalities are quite something.
May 12,2024 I have a Westie named Winston. I always thought he dug up my yard because he's bored. Turns out he can hear the underground rodents!! Thanks for that tip, now I can figure out how to keep him busy in other ways
My 15.5yo Westie, Zoey, is as stubborn and independent as anything. She has her own fan club of humans (kids we don't know, they know Z; my friends and co-workers who have never met her ask about her; my aunt greeted Z before anyone else over Christmas) and 3 boyfriends (a husky, a golden retriever, and a pug). If Z likes you, but you don't like Z (human or canine) - too bad, you're her friend, whether you want to be or not! Her first few Christmases, she'd go under the tree and lick the figures in the Nativity scene - then grab Baby Jesus in his ceramic manger and run; it fit perfectly in her mouth, and looked so funny, we had a hard time reprimanding her. She goes nuts for critters: birds, squirrels, etc; she nearly got herself killed over a squirrel a few years ago. I could go on and on, but the video is almost over
I got my dog from the shelter. ive been told he's a westie. he looks and acts exactly like a westie but his coat is is like a toasted coconut color. can someone explain. thanks
You forgot an important trait. Westirs have a tendency to howl!!! My pure bred did when he was left at home. Also I had litter mates Carland terries. One was all Cairn traits (everything), the other all Westie traits (everything including heart conditions) Our vet said he'd never seen any litter mates that had split traits like that.
We lost our 3rd Westie almost 2 years ago. I still say goodnight to her. She always slept on my head.

I had my Hamish for 17 1/2 years. Best dog ever. Forever loved, forever missed.♥

The head tilt! Yup, that gets our Westie out of a lot of scolding.

Westies are the besties.

J 'ai un cairn terrier très têtu mais super adorable câlin et bisous
My westie is gone now. I loved her and miss her. She was a terrible bitter!! Have scars!
Best watchdog
My Bethy always stayed with me. We were bonded. She cuddled with me every evening.
My Bethy died of congestive heart failure in 2019. She was my doggy soulmate.
We just found out that our rescue is half Westie. He has all the personality! But he looks more like a Cairn or Sealyham terrier
What surprised me the most was the Scarlet Johansson has a WESTIE. (I have the West Highland Terrier guide book.)
I also didn’t know they were called by the other two names.
This is helpful❤❤

Cairn terrier possibly
Sounds like a Cairn Terrier. They are cousins of the Westie.
