  • In the final episode of our ten-part series on coercive control, Dr Torna Pitman explores the potential for healing and transformation in the lives of victim-survivors once a controlling relationship has ended.
She explains and normalises the challenges of the recovery journey, including the need to recognise and resist attempts by the abuser to re-enter their independent life.
She also affirms the strength and wisdom that can come from post-traumatic growth, as the survivor begins to shed and discard the complex web of abuse and control.
This series is for our clients, your clients, your friends or family and the general public. Knowledge saves lives and helps us recognise the loss of human rights inherent to unequal relationships.

Thank you. Victim blaming among psuedo "therapist" types is rampant. Slaves didn't choose what happened to them, women didn't, and children certainly don't. Someone abusing you and having power over you is very socioeconomic based and we don't choose or have control over perpetrators or trauma.

This series was so informative, validating and encouraging. Thank you from the bottom of my heart❤💯. I will share this with as many women (and men) as I possibly can.

I'm trying to come out of the back of this. My abuse is from a cult not a intimate relationship, a lot of abuse by proxy. Information like this is very important because not even law enforcement know a lot about coercive control - so who can you get help from? Anyway, I forgot to say 'thank you" - thank you so much for putting out this information.

This woman is the best source I've found on the internet. It's a slow process bit hang in there. It will get better. I'm glad you survived their nonsense like I did.

I’ve suffered and survived a coercive control intimate partner. For the last five years my neighbour has been locking me into a coercive controlling relationship… he’s chosen to consistently harass me about how I keep my yards… to the point I can’t be outside. The police won’t do anything about him saying “this is a neighbour dispute “ or “this is a civil matter “. Last year he threatened to kill his wife (was charged with uttering death threats) and stabbed him self in the chest. Despite this the police insist he isn’t a danger to me or my child.
This is almost worse that the intimate partner relationship… as the authorities won’t help me.

"You don't want it, you don't need it, have no desire to please them at all". And if I may add one more comment to that, feel sickened when you find yourself degrading yourself like that every time you catch yourself acting trying to please like this because That is how they see you as being anyways. It's a horrible habit that was never stopped and that subservient behavior, I believe, Is the reason for many failed relationships. It's like a parent who was so strict never stopped doing it because it worked for their own purposes. Their selfish needs. We just weren't given permission to stop doing that.

My Coercive Control abuser is staying in a room above me at the homeless shelter I am residing at. Continuing to abuse me and am receiving no help at all from authorities, community or friends. I am completely alone in it.
