  • I bought this generator just in case the predicted blackout happened. It also replaced my old generator which was difficult to start. My brother also bought the same one so we could parallel them if needed.
    Once the fear of winter blackouts has passed, I'll take it apart.

    That switch from choke to run to off is typical on the Chinese inverter generators I've use. I find I have to go slowly from choke to run or it will stall. Also I've found that when gas is much more than 4 weeks old I have to drain it and replace it with fresh gas. I also have two Honda generators. When I placed them in parallel to run an electric chainsaw, they would lose sync when you'd press the chainsaw trigger after you'd make a few cuts. Found it had the same behaviour if you ran a heater that cycles on and off. The solution is to turn them off, and start them again and that allows them to sync the sine waves again. After you're forced to do this a few times, you quickly realize that the parallel feature is only good for constant loads.

      @@DavidMcLuckie Thanks, that would be interesting. I should mention the results I observed were with two 1000 Honda units that were connected to 1500W loads. One load was an electric chainsaw, the other was a Dyson heater.

    I've been wanting to try paralleling generators manually, given I have a pair of Honda EX650 suitcase generators from the 90s, it'd be fun to have them set up to put out a kilowatt between them, it's just a bit more fiddly with those as you have to match the revs up and align the frequency and all that to ensure they don't go boom when making the connection... :P

      @@Justin71554 Having taken one of the two completely to bits (on the generator side that is, engine's a Honda, they just work!), I'm well aware of that, could say the same about generators that power the grid too, they use(d) things called synchroscopes to match the Hz prior to throwing the switch to come online, and a crude version can be made with a bit of wiring and an incandescent lightbulb, though a real 'scope would be better...

    I've got one of these that lives on the boat and tops the lithium house batteries up when there's not enough solar and we're anchored for a few days and not running the main engine. Yoinked it in a sale for nzd$560 a couple of years ago. It's up to 670 hours, I put a cheap engine hour meter on the thing. I drop the oil every 20 hours ish. It's had 27 oil changes at 520mm a change, just throw whatever oil is to hand, 15/40 straight 30 weight. It has never missed a beat, when I load it I'm pulling 1500w for an hour or two so about 75%. Thought it would have gone bang years ago.

    that is nice. but not a need . without a breakered combined output cable it get you no ware. you are limited by the output breaker per plug. you need to show old school way to parallel to gen sets with light bulbs and how to combine the outputs into one. Just the same nice to watch thanks.

    Clever engineering by shunting DC power to make one generator act like a larger gen set.
    Would have been interesting to see the current flow from the second generator.

    Here in the US and probably in your area the gen. set you are showing is rebranded by many names. Maxspeedingrods is just a boxing company like the rest. I've seen that set sold under the Predator, NAPA, Wen, AI Power, and many more badges. Pop the side cover and look at the plate on the engine or gen. end. You will see who really makes it.
    Don't get me wrong, so far my AI power has been running fine, however I only have 100 hours on it. I do use synthetic oil in it. My Honda runs a bit smoother, and it is 30+ years old . Not sure if the Chinese unit will run as long as the Honda, I'm guessing not, but we will see. The price was right for the AI Power. I didn't want to spend $5000.00 on another Honda. The Chinese unit does get better fuel economy, since it is variable speed per load.
    My Honda has auto idle, which means when no load is present it will idle. Just a 60 watt light it will rev. back up to 3600 RPMs.
    Yes the Honda is still running fine. I only got the AI Power for the travel trailer, which is only 125V @ 30Amp. The Honda is now the back up for emergency power for the house. It has 125V and 240V.
    Thanks for the vids.

    Hi, after seeing your review, I just bought from Amzn the MXR3500, but the Dual Fuel version. I like the idea of having two, because having double the power but with the option of having just half the power & size (say in a campervan trip) seems more versatile? W've a large house so I wonder if more oomph in a power outage would be appreciated, & one generator might be underpowered? Can you say more on the case for two v. one generator please ? Thanks

    • @transcentia3508
      @transcentia3508 3 місяці тому

      Meaning, two running easily in parallel, like you demonstrated

    • @DavidMcLuckie
      @DavidMcLuckie  3 місяці тому

      Assuming the power outage is short term and temporary, two generators is likely unnecessary. There shouldn't be too many things you'd need to run that need 6-7KW.
      Now if it's long term off grid, a single higher powered generator is likely more fuel efficient than two separate.
      I've got one and my brother has the other, so that means should either of need a high output we can borrow the others and run in dual. So if your plan is to have two this also means you've got a spare to run should anything happen in an emergency.
